The Inventory of the Richard Roud Collection #1117 Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center ROOD, RICHARD #1117 September 1989 - June 1997 Biography: Richard Roud ( 1929-1989), as director of both the New York and London Film Festivals, was responsible for both discovering and introducing to a wider audience many of the important directors of the latter half th of the 20 - century (many of whom he knew personally) including Bernardo Bertolucci, Robert Bresson, Luis Buiiuel, R.W. Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Terry Malick, Ermanno Ohni, Jacques Rivette and Martin Scorsese. He was an author of books on Jean-Marie Straub, Jean-Luc Godard, Max Ophuls, and Henri Langlois, as well as the editor of CINEMA: A CRITICAL DICTIONARY. In addition, Mr. Roud wrote extensive criticism on film, the theater and other visual arts for The Manchester Guardian and Sight and Sound and was an occasional contributor to many other publications. At his death he was working on an authorized biography of Fran9ois Truffaut and a book on New Wave film. Richard Roud was a Fulbright recipient and a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor. Scope and contents: The Roud Collection (9 Paige boxes, 2 Manuscript boxes and 3 Packages) consists primarily of book research, articles by RR and printed matter related to the New York Film Festival and prominent directors. Material on Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Henri Langlois is particularly extensive. Though considerably smaller, the Correspondence file contains personal letters from many important directors (see List ofNotable Correspondents). The Photographs file contains an eclectic group of movie stills. -

In case of abuse or copyright appearing without permission e-mail [email protected] 1 THE ARTIST BIOPIC: A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF NARRATIVE CINEMA, 1934-2010 DAVID ALLAN BOVEY A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Master of Philosophy December 2015 2 ABSTRACT The thesis provides an historical overview of the artist biopic that has emerged as a distinct sub-genre of the biopic as a whole, totalling some ninety films from Europe and America alone since the first talking artist biopic in 1934. Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation. The sub-genre’s development is explored via the grouping of films with associated themes and the use of case studies. -

More recently they have turned their attention to the earliest and most brutal years of that legacy. In the anniversary year 2009, in Madrid the Conde Duque Arts Centre presented ‘Presas’, a major exhibition documenting Francoist women prisoners and drawing on the rich archives of the Communist Party; and the Reina Sofía National Museum re-hung its collection, exhibiting new photographic and documentary material to place in context a revised display of Picasso’s Guernica. -

This year’s program showcases 6 Los Angeles premieres and among those invited it includes directors Javier Fesser, Ramón Salazar and Gustavo Salmerón, and additional talent that will be announced shortly, who will be presenting their films at the Egyptian Theater. Presented and produced by The Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), The American Cinematheque and EGEDA U.S., RECENT SPANISH CINEMA has showcased for more than two decades the most recent Spanish cinema to Angelenos. Antonio’s obse search for a fiery and passionate Carmen takes him to flamenc dance schools where he eventually discovers his Carmen in an untried young dancer...named Carmen. As the rigors of rehers become more and more intense, Carmen and Antonio find themselves living the "Carmen" story of love and treachery. (Subtitled) (99 min.) SPA/2 - EL NORTE (1984) Beginning in the remote mountain jungles of Guatemala, awash with the lushness of nature and the rainbow colors of the May this highly acclaimed drama about a brother and sister seekin better life centers on two young Indians. Dossier pédagogique CRÍA CUERVOS Carlos Saura PARA EMPEZAR… Odile MONTAUFRAY Action scolaire Cinéma LE LATINA Février 2007 1 PARA EMPEZAR… A l’occasion de la sortie nationale en copie neuve du film Cría Cuervos, de Carlos Saura, le cinéma LE LATINA-Cinélangues est heureux d’offrir, comme d’habitude, aux professeurs d’espagnol ce dossier documentaire dans lequel ils trouveront, pour eux, des informations sur le film et le réalisateur, des critiques du film, et pour leurs élèves des documents destinés à être exploités en classe (séquences dialoguées extraites du scénario original du film, fiches pédagogiques etc). Cette sortie est un événement car Cría Cuervos, qui a connu un énorme succès international et qui obtient à Cannes en 1976 le Prix spécial du Jury, reste, 30 ans après sa sortie, un monument incontournable du cinéma espagnol, qui a marqué des générations de spectateurs (et de professeurs et d’élèves…qui tous ont gardé en mémoire l’obsédante chansonnette de Jeannette ¿Por qué te vas ?) Cría Cuervos s’inscrit dans une série de films qui, à partir des années 60/70, sont des critiques virulentes de ce qui constitue les fondements du régime franquiste, la Triple Alliance, église, armée et bourgeoisie. C’est ainsi que se succèdent El jardin de las Delicias (1970), Ana y los lobos (1972), La prima Angélica (1973), violents réquisitoires contre une société patriacarle figée qui résiste à toute forme d’ouverture et de modernisation et contre toutes les formes d’oppression et de répression produites par l’armée et la religion. Violents mais prudents réquisitoires car la censure veille et musèle la liberté d’expression à une époque où l’on valorise particulièrement une cinématographie axée sur les héros ibériques religieux ou militaires… Carlos Saura n’échappe pas à cette contrainte qui va le conduire à développer un langage cinématographique original basé sur le symbolisme, l’allégorie et la métaphore. -

Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2003, 179 pp. Carlos Saura was, for over twenty-five years, the most recognizable face of Spanish cinema for international audiences. His career, which spans the final decade of the Franco dictatorship and the years of Spain's transition to democracy, continues to be a complex blend of personal narratives, often rooted in the memories of the Civil War (La prima Angelica, Dulces horas, jAy, Carmela!), dance films with a pronounced Hispanic flavor ( Carmen, El amor brujo, Sevillanas, Flamenco), and idio- syncratic versions of cinematic biography (Lopez de Aguirre [El Dorado]. Antonieta Rivas Mercado [Antonieta], San Juan de la Cruz [La noche oscura]. Francisco de Goya [Goya en Burdeos] ). In Saura's rise to promi- nence as the preeminent representative of Spain in the film medium and his eventual eclipse by a younger generation of filmmakers like Almo- dovar, Medem and Amenabar, we are able to read the gradual evolution of Spanish cinema itself. Linda Willem's collection of seventeen interviews with Saura, covering four decades, contributes in subtle but important ways to our understanding of that evolution. Saura's cinema is deeply rooted in Spanish cultural history, but also includes efforts to develop a transnational Hispanic genre, aimed at broadening the market for his films beyond Spain and the European art film circuit.
