New York Two Revolutions and a Demolition The year 1989 was a historic one for two reasons. These reasons, though separate, are intimately linked. One was the fall of the Berlin Wall, symbolizing as it did the collapse of Soviet hegemony over Eastern Europe, followed soon after by the death of the one-party state in the Soviet Union itself. The other was that it was the bicentenary of the French Revolution. Zhou En Lai, asked what he thought about the French Revolution, is said to have replied: ' It is too soon to give a verdict.' Indeed, the bicentenary became an occasion for the airing of widely divergent interpretations of the meaning that the French Revolution had for the late twentieth century. Francois Mitter- rand, as a Socialist president, wanted to claim the Revolution for socialism emphasizing the rights of man. One of his guests was rude enough to claim that human rights had been earlier and more endurably established by the Bloodless Revolution of 1688 and the Bill of Rights which followed the year after. President George Bush was too diplomatic to agree with Margaret Thatcher who had made this claim, but then the American Revolution of 1776 had benefited from French material support as much as French, as well as English, ideas. The Revolution of 1789 is a perennial subject of debate among historians. Fran~ois Furet and Simon Schama are merely the most recent examples of historians who have espoused major revisionist interpretations, and no doubt the battle will continue.! But the one interpretation which has long held sway was the one that claimed 1789 as a precursor of the later revolutions - the unsuccessful one of 1848, the Paris Commune of 1871 and, of course , the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The Bolsheviks knew their history of 1789 intimately, and bandied about words like Thermidor and Bonapartism. And, of course, there was the Terror. Lenin as Robespierre has been a frequently used analogy. Trotsky decried Stalin as having embodied the reaction that Thermidor represented in that earlier Revolution. But throughout much of this century, if not the last two hundred years, there has been an identification of the French Revolution as a popular, democratic uprising, which brought down a feudal MARX' S REVENGE TWO REVOLUTIONS AND A DEMOLITION aristocratic ancien regime. Its earlier idealism inspired the pioneers of socialism; when Fukuyama claimed Hegel as the one person whose prophecies had been its occurrence presaged the birth of the modern era; and its later perversion fulfilled by the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The group has tried to draw attention to itself through committing several grisly murders and by triggering some explosions. They are engaged in setting up ‘bases’ in the remote and relatively inaccessible locales of West Bengal that border Bihar-Jharkhand. They seek a foothold in some other districts of the state as well. A section of the corporate media has also been encouraging them, by legitimising the Maoists’ killing of CPI (M) leaders and workers in districts like Bankura, Purulia, and Midnapore west. The CPI (M-L)-People’s War and the Maoist Communist Centre, two groups of the Naxalite persuasion, came together on 21 September 2004 to form a new party, the CPI (Maoist). As with the two erstwhile constituents, the Maoists are active in selected areas of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Because of the secretive style of their working, their political outlook and activities are largely unknown to the mass of the people. The name of the CPI (Maoist) has been associated with violent acts and spreading terror. Going by their programme and ideological stand, the party is a violent anarchist outfit. Anarchy can cause harm to the democratic struggle and Left movement. The CPI (M) will counter this party politically and ideologically. The CPI (M) formed after a long ideological debate in 1964, and a new Party Programme was adopted. Sectarian and ultra-left adventurist trends arose in the ongoing struggle against revisionism and reformism.

There is nothing wrong in tackling the intellectual history of social move- ments from a contemporary interest and perspective. Such an approach often uncovers things previously buried under the debris of received wis- dom. Moreover, early socialism, the topic under discussion here, has long been used as a screen on which to project topical ideological arguments. This dissertation by Petra Weber on the "early socialist labour movement and the rise of the two hostile brothers Marxism and anarchism" (thus the subtitle), sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, supervised by Profes- sor Heinrich August Winkler and Professor Wilhelm Hennis and published by the Bonn Commission on Parliamentary History and Political Parties, is the latest attempt to respond to "the demand for alternative concepts of socialism" (p. 13) by recalling socialist traditions preceding and contempo- raneous with Marx. The author stresses primarily two themes in her at- tempted actualization: firstly she highlights the much neglected continuity between early socialism and anarchism and endeavours to reverse the suppression of anarchism from the history of socialism, and secondly she relies on the change of paradigm in sociohistorical research pioneered by E. P. Thompson and others by adopting a broad notion of "working-class culture" and the labour movement as a "cultural movement". Schneiderman, the Supreme Court decided that it is possible. ,The contention of this paper is that it is not. The Workers Patty of America, the legal superstructure over the underground Communist Party of America, gives a strict 'definitioff of the conditions of membership. According to this definition, only he is a member of the Party who accepts the principles and tactics of the Party, agrees to submit to Party discipline and is willing to engage actively in its work. It is well known that the Party discipline is rigidly enforced to the purpose of securing, among the Party members, com- plete identity of views on short and long range problems.' The program of the Party is merely a restatement of the well known Communist doctrine, first formulated by Marx and Engels in the Com- munist Manifesto (1847) and, later on, expanded and interpreted by the two authors and their disciples among whom Lenin and Stalin have gained prominence.
