1 BYRON’S ROMANTIC ADVENTURES IN SPAIN RICHARD A. CARDWELL UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM I On the July 2nd 1809, after several delays with the weather, Byron set off from Falmouth on the Lisbon Packet, The Princess Elizabeth , on his Grand Tour of the Mediterranean world not controlled by France. Four and a half days later he landed in Lisbon. From there, across a war-ravaged Portugal and Spain, he headed on horseback to Seville and Cádiz, accompanied by Hobhouse, details recorded in the latter’s diary. But we know little of Byron’s stay in Seville and Cádiz save what he relates in a letter to his mother, Catherine Byron, from Gibraltar dated August 11th 1809. It is ironic that Byron never saw her in life again. The first part of the letter reads as follows: Seville is a beautiful town, though the streets are narrow they are clean, we lodged in the house of two Spanish unmarried ladies, who possess six houses in Seville, and gave me a curious specimen of Spanish manners. They are women of character, and the eldest a fine woman, the youngest pretty but not so good a figure as Donna Josepha, the freedom of woman which is general here astonished me not a little, and in the course of further observation I find that reserve is not the characteristic of the Spanish belles, who are on general very handsome, with large black eyes, and very fine forms. – The eldest honoured your unworthy son with very particular attention, embracing him with great tenderness at parting (I was there but three days) after cutting off a lock of his hair, & presenting him with one of her own about three feet in length, which I send, and beg you will retain till my return. -

INTRODUCTION French Louisiana had been a thorn in the flank of Spain’s Atlantic Empire from its founding in 1699. Failure to remove that thorn in 1699 and again in 1716, when doing so would have been comparatively easy and Spanish naval forces were positioned to do so, meant that by 1762 the wound had festered, so that the colony had become what La Salle, Iberville, Bienville, and their royal masters had envisioned: a smuggling station through which French goods reached New Spain and Cuba and their goods—dye stuffs and silver mostly—reached France and helped to pay the costs of a colony that consumed more than it produced, at least so 1 far as the French crown’s finances were concerned. * © 2017 Paul E Hoffman. Professor of Chemistry in the Uni- versity of Cambridge; we shall now proceed to lay before our readers some account of his life, studies, and character. Smithson Tennant was the only child of the Rev. Calvert Ten- nant, younger son of a respectable, family in Wensley-dale, near Richmond, in Yorkshire, and Vicar of Selby in that co*nty, where Mr. Tennant was born on the 30th of November, 1761. His mo- ther, whose maiden name was Mary Daunt, was the daughter of a surgeon of the same town. Of his father little is known, except that he had been a fellow- of St. John's College, Cambridge, and was a friend of Dr. Ruther. forth, Regius Professor of Divinity in that University. He was always mentioned by his son with the most affectionate gratitude, for the care he had bestowed on his education. The Maritime Voyage of Jorge Juan to the Viceroyalty of Peru (1735-1746) Enrique Martínez-García — Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas* María Teresa Martínez-García — Kansas University** Translated into English (August 2012) One of the most famous scientific expeditions of the Enlightenment was carried out by a colorful group of French and Spanish scientists—including the new Spanish Navy lieutenants D. Jorge Juan y Santacilia (Novelda 1713-Madrid 1773) and D. Antonio de Ulloa y de la Torre-Giralt (Seville 1716-Isla de León 1795)—at the Royal Audience of Quito in the Viceroyalty of Peru between 1736 and 1744. There, the expedition conducted geodesic and astronomical observations to calculate a meridian arc associated with a degree in the Equator and to determine the shape of the Earth. The Royal Academy of Sciences of Paris, immersed in the debate between Cartesians (according to whom the earth was a spheroid elongated along the axis of rotation (as a "melon")) and Newtonians (for whom it was a spheroid flattened at the poles (as a "watermelon")), decided to resolve this dispute by comparing an arc measured near the Equator (in the Viceroyalty of Peru, present-day Ecuador) with another measured near the North Pole (in Lapland). The expedition to the Equator, which is the one that concerns us in this note, was led by Louis Godin (1704-1760), while Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) headed the expedition to Lapland. The knowledge of the shape and size of the Earth had great importance for the improvement of cartographic, geographic, and navigation techniques during that time. -

ALEXANDER MARCET (1770-1822), PHYSICIAN AND ANIMAL CHEMIST by N. G. COLEY ALEXANDER John Gaspard Marcet1 was born in Geneva in the year 1770. His father, who was a merchant of Huguenot descent,2 wished him to follow the family business, but the young Alexander had no liking for commerce. Instead he decided to train for a career in the law, but before he could complete his studies he became involved in the disturbed political situation which arose in Geneva after the French Revolution.3 This resulted in his imprisonment, along with his boyhood friend Charles Gaspard de la Rive.4After the death of Robespierre in 1794 the two friends were at length successful in obtaining a special dispensation by which they were released from prison but were banished from Switzerland for five years. They then came to Edinburgh, where they took up the study of medicine, both gaining the M.D. on the same day in 1797. There was a strong chemical tradition in the University of Edinburgh at this time, deriving from the earlier influence of men like William Cullen. Joseph Black was in the chair of medicine and chemistry and the university was also served by Daniel Rutherford, from whom Marcet received instruction. The interest which Marcet was later to show in chemistry became apparent in that he chose to write his doctoral thesis on diabetes,5 about which several plausible chemical theories were currently under discussion in the university. Immediately after qualifying in 1797, Marcet moved to London where he was first of all assistant physician to the Public Dispensary in Cary Street. -

Hunt 9 The Partnership of Smithson Tennant and William Hyde Wollaston “A quantity of platina was purchased by me a few years since with the design of rendering it malleable for the different purposes to which it is adapted. That object has now been attained. ” WILLIAM HYDE W O L L A S T O N Up to the end of the eighteenth century the attempts to produce malleable platinum had advanced mainly in the hands of practical men aiming at its pre paration and fabrication rather than at the solution of scientific problems. These were now to be attacked with a marked degree of success by two remarkable but very different men who first became friends during their student days at Cam bridge and who formed a working partnership in 1800 designed not only for scientific purposes but also for financial reasons. They were of the same genera tion and much the same background as the professional scientists of London whose work was described in Chapter 8, and to whom they were well known, but with the exception of Humphry Davy they were of greater stature and made a greater advance in the development of platinum metallurgy than their predecessors. Their combined achievements over a relatively short span of years included the successful production for the first time of malleable platinum on a truly com mercial scale as well as the discovery of no less than four new elements contained in native platinum, a factor that was of material help in the purification and treatment of platinum itself. -

Translated by W illiam Henry Scott Translator’s Note Fray Francisco Antolin was a Dominican missionary in Dupax and Aritao,Nueva Vizcaya,in the Philippines,between the years 1769 and 1789,who was greatly interested in the pagan tribes generally called “Igorots” in the nearby mountains of the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon. His unpublished 1789 manuscript,Noticias de los infieles igor- rotes en lo interior de la Isla de M anila was an attempt to bring to gether all information then available about these peoples,from published books and pamphlets, archival sources, and personal diaries, corre spondence, interviews and inquiries. An English translation of Part One was published in this journal,V o l.29,pp. 177-253,as “Notices of the pagan Igorots in 1789,” together with a translator’s introduction and a note on the translation. Part Two is presented herewith. Part Two is basically a collection of source materials arranged in chronological order, to which Esther Antolin added comments and discussion where he thought it necessary,and an appendix of citations and discourses (illustraciones) on controversial interpretations. With the exception of some of the Royal Orders (cedulas reales) ,these docu ments are presented in extract or paraphrase rather than as verbatim quotations for the purpose of saving space,removing material of no direct interest,or of suppressing what Father Antolin,as a child of the 18th-century Enlightenment, evidently considered excessive sanctity. Occasionally it is impossible to tell where the quotation ends and Father Antolin,s own comments begin without recourse to the original,which recourse has been made throughout the present translation except in the case of works on the history of mining in Latin America which were not locally available. -

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF PLATINUM GROUP METALS 2 CHAPTER 2 | PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF PLATINUM GROUP METALS CONTENTS 2.1 OVERVIEW OF PGMS 04 2.2 METALLIC PGMS 05 2.3 COMPOUNDS OF PLATINUM GROUP METALS 06 SIMPLE COMPOUNDS 06 COMPLEX COMPOUNDS 07 REFERENCES 13 2 CHAPTER 2 | PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF PLATINUM GROUP METALS SUMMARY • Six elements of Groups 8, 9, and 10 in the periodic table constitute the platinum group metals (PGMs): platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir), and osmium (Os). • The physical and mechanical properties of the PGMs and their compounds indicate a wide range of properties with widely varying densities and solubilities (see Table 2-1). • Metallic forms of PGMs are generally considered to be ‘inert’, i.e., not chemically reactive. However, this is dependent in part on dimensional characteristics. Thus, while massive metal forms have low chemical reactivity, fi nely-divided metal powders with high surface area show greater reactivity. • Simple binary compounds exist for each of the PGMs. They also form a vast array of complex coordination compounds in which the central metal atom is bound to a variety of ligands by coordinate bonding, including halides, sulphur, amines, and other atoms and groups. • This unique coordination chemistry has made PGM compounds of great industrial value, but also can have implications for the health of workers exposed to certain of these compounds due to the linkages with biological behaviour and toxicity (see Chapter 6). • The complex halogenated platinum compounds (CHPS) are among those which are industrially and toxicologically important.
