An Examination of Ideology and Subject Formation Among Elite And

AN EXAMINATION OF IDEOLOGY AND SUBJECT FORMATION AMONG ELITE AND ORDINARY RESIDENTS IN THE BAKKEN SHALE, NORTH DAKOTA, 2015-2016 A Dissertation by THOMAS ANDREW LODER Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Christian Brannstrom Committee Members, Forrest Fleischman Wendy Jepson Kathleen O’Reilly Head of Department, David Cairns August 2018 Major Subject: Geography Copyright 2018 Thomas Andrew Loder ABSTRACT The US shale energy boom of the late 2000s and 2010s has brought both economic growth and negative externalities to communities undergoing extraction. Building on previous research on fracking landscapes – as well as geographies of energy and natural resources and case studies of environmental subjectivity in extractive zones – this dissertation employed a suite of qualitative methods to examine the discourses and ideology used to support and oppose fracking-led development in North Dakota’s Bakken Shale. The dissertation consists of three substantive chapters. The first employs key actor interviews and participant observation to examine how pro-oil ideology is advanced by economic and political elites in North Dakota. This chapter concludes that elites frame support for oil as an extension of existing conservative ideologies prevalent in the state. The second substantive chapter consists of content analysis of coverage of oil- related events in state-level newspapers, specifically concentrating on a 2014 conservation ballot measure and the Keystone XL pipeline. This chapter concludes that pro-oil writers are more effective in their messaging due to focusing on economic and emotional appeals.

Kyokushin Budo Kai The Ultimate Beginners Guide Revision 2.02 www.kyokushinbudokai.org Kyokushin Budo Kai The Ultimate Beginners Guide Page 1 of 129 Introduction and Acknowledgements Welcome! Thank you for downloading 'Kyokushin Budo Kai: The Ultimate Beginners Guide' from www.kyokushinbudokai.org. This document and the site which provides it are the premier English language resources for all things Budokai. Both the site and this guide are freely available and of benefit to practitioners of Kyokushin Budo Kai, Kyokushin Karate (at times known as 'Kyokushinkai'), Judo, Jiu Jitsu (aka. Ju Jitsu), Free Fight and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) worldwide. As a student of Kyokushin Budo Kai, I have spent many hundreds of hours researching websites, in four different languages, in an effort to gain as much knowledge as possible concerning the International Kyokushin Budokai, Jon Bluming (founder and President) and background information concerning the martial arts that make up the Kyokushin Budo Kai system. I would like to thank all Budoka that have posted material online. Without their efforts - the construction of this single source of information would not have been possible. This document has been compiled following many, many, many months of internet research into the techniques and philosophies of the styles of Kyokushin Budo Kai, Kyokushin Karate, Jiu Jutsu, Judo and Sambo. I researched it's contents purely for the purpose of PERSONAL development and in order to improve my understanding as a practitioner of Kyokushin Karate, Judo and Jiu Jitsu under my Sensei, Charley Herwig (3. Dan), who's Dojo is associated with International Kyokushin Budo Kai.

  • We, the Undersigned Democratic State Party Chairs, Are Calling For

We, the Undersigned Democratic State Party Chairs, Are Calling For

We, the undersigned Democratic State Party Chairs, are calling for immediate federal and state action to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot without the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19. The United States of America is simultaneously in the midst of an unprecedented global viral outbreak and an extremely consequential series of elections. The rapid spread of COVID-19 has halted virtually all public gatherings and rendered the act of leaving one’s home for non-essential reasons dangerous. As things stand, both of these acts are necessary for millions of American voters to uphold their Constitutional right to select their representatives. Every state is currently unprepared to address the seismic shift in election administration necessary to ensure the 2020 election proceeds during a pandemic and must start implementing these changes by mid-April. The funding is needed right now to protect the 2020 election. If left unchanged, our current electoral system poses a severe public health risk that could rapidly accelerate the spread of COVID-19 while disenfranchising countless voters and calling into question the legitimacy of our elections. Just like our healthcare system and our economy, our elections infrastructure will need a massive infusion of resources to ensure that elections can go on and every voter has access to the ballot during the COVID-19 pandemic. To remedy this untenable situation, we urge federal lawmakers to immediately appropriate at least $2 billion for state and local elections administrators to implement the following reforms: • a universal and easily accessible vote-by-mail system which should include: o provisions for free or prepaid postage, o allowing ballots postmarked by election day to count, o reforming any signature match laws to protect voters, o and allowing community organizations to collect and deliver voted, sealed ballots.
