14 JPN 4930 Japanese Business Culture Section 08CE Spring 2017 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed for undergraduate students who wish to acquire a broader understanding of prevailing values, attitudes, behavior patterns, and communication styles in modern Japan in regard to conducting business in the future. A key to being successful in business internationally is to understand the role of culture in international business. In this class we will explore cross-cultural issues and cultural values by reading essays from the perspective of Japan itself as well as from an external view, primarily that of Western society. Mutual assumptions, unconscious strategies, and different mechanics forming barriers to communication between Japanese and non-Japanese will be investigated in order to understand how cultural and communication differences can create misunderstanding and breakdown among individuals as well as during negotiations between companies and countries. Among other topics, business etiquette, business communication, the structure and hierarchy of Japanese companies, gender issues, socializing for success in business, and strategies for creating and maintaining effective working relationships with Japanese counterparts will be discussed. We will read several case studies on Japanese/American negotiations to understand how American managers or public officials negotiated successfully with Japanese counterparts, and what issues or problems were presented during negotiation. During the semester, students are required to submit (1) current relevant newspaper, magazine, or on-line article taken from news sources such as Japanese newspapers (English version), CNBC, Nikkei Net, JETRO, Reuters, BBC, THE ECONOMIST or TIME magazine, etc. to be pre-approved and posted by the instructor on the E-Learning in Canvas Discussion Board. -

After the invasion in China in the early 1930s, trade-oriented nanshin (southward advancement) policies gradually gained aggressiveness, as the military began to influence making foreign policies. Behind this change, nanshin-ron (southward advancement theory) advocates provided ideological justification for the Japanese territorial expansion in the South Seas. In these circumstances, Japanese settlers in Papua and New Guinea were put in a peculiar position: the emergence of militaristic Japan probably stimulated their patriotism but it also endangered their presence because they were in the colony of Australia-the nation that traditionally feared invasion from the north. However, as the Australian government continued to restrict Japanese migration, numerically their presence became marginal. But, unproportional to their population, economically they prospered and consolidated their status as 'masters'(although not quite equal to their white counterparts) in the Australian colonial apparatus. In this paper, I shall analyse how this unique presence of the Japanese settlers developed, examining its relations with the Japanese expansion in the South Seas and the Australian policies that tried to counter the expansion. -

• Risutora: The Impact of Globalization and Restructuring upon Women in the Japanese workforce A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Political Economy Research Centre Faculty of Social Sciences Beverley Bishop January 2003 Abstract Risutora: The Impact of Globalization and Restructuring upon Women in the Japanese Workforce This thesis is an analysis of the relationship between gender and globalization in one specific national context: Japan. Japan's position as an affluent, industrialized liberal democracy, with a distinctive model of capitalism, means that Japanese women's experiences of globalization differ from those of women both elsewhere in Asia, and in other First World countries. The actions of the Japanese state and Japanese companies have been instrumental in the globalization of production, which is now having reCiprocal effects upon the Japanese national model of capitalism. In response to global economic change, the Japanese model of capitalism is being intentionally restructured through company practice and legal change. This restructuring (risutora) impacts differently upon men and women, as the liberalizing processes associated with globalization interact with specific local institutions, including the ideal of the three generation family and the position of women in the Japanese national model of capitalism. After an analysis of the mainstream literature about globalization, the state and historical institutionalism and feminist literature about gender and globalization, the thesis demonstrates that the complex trends associated with globalization have produced pressures for two kinds of, ostensibly contradictory, employment reforms in Japan. There are pressures for labour market deregulation, to increase the international competitiveness of Japanese production. There are also pressures for the 're'-regulation of labour to establish a prinCiple of sexual equality at work. -

A historical study of Tenjiku(天竺) recognition in Japan Dr. Takahiko Ishizaki Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo, Japan [email protected] Introduction The purpose of this study is to historically examine Tenjiku recognition in Japan. Tenjiku started to be known as the birthplace of Buddhism with its introduction to Japan in the 6th century. The medieval and early modern worldview of Japanese people is called Sangoku-Sekaikan ( 三国世界観), or ‘three country worldview’. In this framework, the whole world consisted of three countries, Honcho (本朝, Japan), Shintan (震旦, China), and Tenjiku. This worldview changed with the introduction of new geographical information from Europe, beginning with the arrival of the Portuguese and Jesuit missionaries in the 16 th century. This new information caused the Japanese to reconsider the whole world as consisting of Godaishu (五大州) or five continents, Asia ( 亜 細 亜 ), Europe ( 欧 羅 巴 ), Livia ( 利 未 亜 , Africa), America ( 亜 墨 利 加 ), and Magallanica (墨瓦蝋泥加). This change caused people to abandon the concept of Tenjiku, and this word is still known as the‘old name of India’. When we consult a Japanese dictionary, one can find an explanation of Tenjiku like this. Tenjiku: the old name of India Definitely it is true that the place Japanese people had understood as the birthplace of Buddhism by the word Tenjiku is now called Indo (インド, India). In that sense, one could suggest that old name Tenjiku was replaced by the new name Indo. However, when we carefully examine historical records of Tenjiku, and trace the evolution of Tenjiku on world maps,it is not correct to simply identify Tenjiku with India. -

Lectures, readings, discussions, and assignments will develop your awareness of many of the understandings, attitudes, and communicative skills that are needed for social competency, and we will consider these also in light of broader cultural patterns and principles. The objective is to equip you with insights and strategies for successful interaction. Procedure, Requirements, and Evaluation Each class meeting will consist of two segments: 1) discussion of readings (distributed in class the previous week) and your reflections on these; and 2) discussion of some aspect of everyday life as was assigned (in class, the week before) for “in-the-street” observation, whether individually or in groups. I will ask leading questions to provoke and guide those discussions, as may be needed, and offer brief lectures as well as supplementary comments when appropriate. National Factors and Employment Relations in Japan Prepared by Dev Raj Adhikari Central Department of Management Tribhuvan University Email: [email protected] Submitted to: Japan Institute of Labour Policy and Training, Tokyo Japan March 28, 2005 Executive Summary A number of changes have occurred in the management of employment relations practices as triggered by the changes in the Japanese national factors—national institutions, labour market, national culture and business and economy. Available Anglo-Saxon literature provides abundant evidence that changes in these national factors in the past had jolted the three prevailing sacred aspects of Japanese employment relations— life-time employment, seniority based system and enterprise-based unions. Realizing this fact, this study attempts to examine the influence of national factors on employment relations practices in Japanese companies. National institutions, in this study, refer to government rules and regulations, educational system, unions and employers’ associations. The government is deregulating its role of protectionism. Educational institutions have played roles to provide cooperative, disciplined and committed manpower. However, there is increasing demand to reform the educational system to support creativity and innovation. In the process of economic development in post-war Japan, the role of trade unions remained highly significant. However, the current rate of unionization is declining due to new developments in internal and external labour markets, changing government policies and declining interest of young recruits to join unions. The role of employers’ associations is highly regarded to strengthen relations with unions and government. Japanese society is recognized as one of the highly cultured societies. The main value system existing in the society is cooperation, collectivism, harmony, respect for seniors and hard-work. -

| 137 Chapter 3: Premodern Japan - The Azuchi-Momoyama and Edo Periods Section 1 – From warring states to national unification Topic 31 – The warring states daimyo What were the distinguishing characteristics of the new style of government instituted by | 138 the warring states daimyo? The emergence of the daimyo The protector-daimyo lost their positions of strength during and after the Onin War. Gekokujo became widespread as more and more of the powerful retainers and village samurai toppled the protector-daimyo through force of arms and installed themselves as masters of their provinces. These new feudal lords are called the warring states daimyo.1 *1=The major daimyo families included the Hojo clan of Sagami Province (modern-day Kanagawa Prefecture), the Asakura clan of Echizen Province (modern-day Fukui Prefecture), the Imagawa clan, whose power extended from Suruga Province (modern-day Shizuoka Prefecture) to Mikawa Province (modern-day eastern Aichi Prefecture), the Uesugi clan of Echigo Province (modern-day Niigata Prefecture), the Takeda clan of Kai Province (modern-day Yamanashi Prefecture), and the Mori clan, which was based in Aki Province (modern-day Hiroshima Prefecture) and extended its influence across southern Japan, including Shikoku and Kyushu. Japan's farming villages had already been forming their own governing bodies called so and asserting their autonomy since the time of the War of the Northern and Southern Courts, which had loosened the grip of the shogunate and the protectors over rural communities. Some of these so had been organizing ikki to achieve common ends. Under the leadership of local samurai, they often succeeded in making their demands heard.
