Performance Notes: Thank you for choosing Echoes of the Rising Sun ! Echoes is comprised of 3 distinct sections of the music. Each section is introduced and concluded by the gong and drum accent points. The first (m. 1) is in a Japanese Taiko drum style. The bass drum should be played horizontal with 2 bass mallets and little or no muffling. As an option, the director/instructor can substitute 8” and 10” concert toms for the bongos for a more pronounced sound. The second section (m. 57) is intended to be an Egyptian minor section. This is in reference to Ra, the Egyptian sun god. Performers should be careful not to overplay or underplay the battery instruments in this section. Let all sustained notes in mallet percussion ring to create an echo effect. The motive in the third and final section (m.101) can best be described as sounds of a Tokyo street market. I highly recommend hard rubber mallets for the xylophone to fit the style. It is my hope that ensembles of all ages and abilities have fun while learning this piece. Echoes brings many opportunities to teach standard and advanced percussion techniques that will be useful in future percussion literature and performances.
