Scope and Content of the Incremental Materials Register of the Bertram David 77029 3 Wolfe Papers, 1903-1999 The materials in the increment consist largely of correspondence, writings, and printed matter added to the collection by Bertram D. Wolfe's widow, Ella Wolfe, in the years following his death in 1977. Additional items became part of the papers after Ella Wolfe's death in 2000. Much of the incremental materials pertain to Bertram Wolfe's career as a critic and historian of Marxism and Soviet communism, as well as his work as a biographer of Diego Rivera. They also document Ella Wolfe's role as her husband's collaborator and caretaker of his legacy, while showing her as a personality in her own right with a wide network of friends and correspondents. The Speeches and Writings series of the papers contains an unpublished, book length manuscript by Bertram Wolfe, "The Corrido in Mexico." A work of cultural anthropology, this study explores how the corrido, a folk ballad form, has served as a vehicle for the expression of popular sentiment in Mexico, including as a means of commentary on various topical issues. In this series there is also a rare pamphlet in Spanish containing a text written by Wolfe during his visit to Spain in 1937, at the height of the Civil War. The series additionally includes the typescript draft of Bertram Wolfe's autobiography, A Life in Two Centuries, and the proofs of another posthumously published work, Revolution and Reality. The Correspondence series records Bertram Wolfe's dealings with his publishers, as well as his exchanges with a number of colleagues in the fields of Soviet history and Marxist studies. A substantial amount of the correspondence relates to Ella Wolfe and her many friends and acquaintances. Included in this are many letters written to Ella Wolfe by Svetlana Allilueva, the daughter of Joseph Stalin. The Writings by others series includes a number of unpublished papers, mainly relating to Soviet history, Marxism, and the Spanish Civil War. The Photographs series includes many pictures of Bertram and Ella Wolfe. There are also several hundred photographs that depict paintings, sketches, and murals by Diego Rivera. These were used by Bertram Wolfe in the preparation of his book, The Fabulous Life of Diego Rivera. There are copies of a number of books by Bertram Wolfe, including Italian, Spanish, and German translations of some of them, in the Printed Matter series of the increment. The Biographical file contains college yearbooks, membership cards, as a well as number of tributes to Bertram Wolfe written after his death. It also includes the transcript of an oral history interview with Ella Wolfe. Box 1. Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions.

Our nation has never been more divided, more war- stricken, more fearful of the future. Yet, the promise and the greatness of Russia remains undaunted. The Russian Provisional Government can and will overcome these challenges and lead our Motherland into the dawn of a new day. Out of character. To introduce myself, I’m a fourth-year Economics and History double major, currently writing a BA thesis on World War II rationing in the United States. I compete on UChicago’s travel team and I additionally am a CD for our college conference. Besides that, I am the VP of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, previously a member of an all-men a cappella group and a proud procrastinator. This letter, for example, is about a month late. We decided to run this committee for a multitude of reasons, but I personally think that Russian in 1917 represents such a critical point in history. In an unlikely way, the most autocratic regime on Earth became replaced with a socialist state. The story of this dramatic shift in government and ideology represents, to me, one of the most interesting parts of history: that sometimes facts can be stranger than fiction.

Although set in diff erent periods, the fi lms have their origins in Afghanistan and then move to European countries. The conversion to Islam happens in connection to, or as a con- sequence of, diff erent military confl icts that the country has seen. The authors examine the consequences the char- acters have on their environment, using Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of deterritorialisation, under- stood as an opportunity to produce political and cultural change. Resettling from one religion and place into another means breaking up structures that need to be reassembled diff erently. However, these three fi lms seem to desire deterritorialisation and resettlement for diff erent reasons. In A Moslem, national structures need to be reset since foreign Western values have corrupted the post-com- munist Russian rural society. In Essential Killing, it is the Western military system of oppression that cannot uphold the convert and his values.

    Diego Y Frida. La Invención De Una Imagen

    DIEGO Y FRIDA. LA INVENCIÓN DE UNA IMAGEN Alicia Azuela de la Cueva Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas de la UNAM En el presente coloquio - Imagen y Apariencia - me ocuparé de los artistas mexicanos Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, entre cuyas obras más notables están la invención y representación de sus propias imágenes. Rivera, reconocido en su tiempo como uno de los grandes pintores del siglo XX, ocupó en varias ocasiones la atención internacional por su habilidad de publicitar e incluso alimentar los escándalos en que se vio envuelto. Irónicamente, Frida Kahlo es quien ahora ocupa un lugar especial en el imaginario popular. Muchos años después de la muerte de la pintora, desde la década de los 70, el fenómeno de la fridomanía invadió el universo del cine, el comercio y la publicidad. Esto es evidente en el mundo de la Historia del Arte con el libro de Heiden Herrera: Frida . Paul Leduc, por su parte, en 1983 llevó la vida de la artista a la pantalla grande con la actuación de Ofelia Medina en la obra Frida, naturaleza viva . A partir de ahí, como dice Carlos Monsiváis, ¨un alud de biografías, portadas de libros, calendarios muñecas (…) declaraciones adoratrices de Madonna y de Salma Hayek (…) un verdadero culto laico que invade la pasión popular. Construye su propia imagen y la dibuja: pasa de aparecer como el pintor cubista que trae a México las vanguardias al obrero artista y líder de los pintores mexicanos revolucionarios.
