When Did Kali Yuga Start, How Long Is/Was It, and When Will It (Or Did It) End?
When did Kali Yuga start, how long is/was it, and when will it (or did it) end? In the book The Holy Science (1894) Sri Yukteswar clarified that a complete Yuga Cycle takes 24,000 years, and is comprised of an ascending cycle of 12,000 years when virtue gradually increases and a descending cycle of another 12,000 years, in which virtue gradually decreases (See the above figure). Hence, after we complete a 12,000-year descending cycle from Satya Yuga -> Kali Yuga, the sequence reverses itself, and an ascending cycle of 12,000 years begins which goes from Kali Yuga -> Satya Yuga. Yukteswar states that, “Each of these periods of 12,000 years brings a complete change, both externally in the material world, and internally in the intellectual or electric world, and is called one of the Daiva Yugas or Electric Couple.” Unfortunately, the start and end dates as well as the duration of the ages are not agreed upon, and Sri Yukteswar (who I have deep faith in) is one of many individuals that have laid out differing dates, times, and structures. “In spite of the elaborate theological framework of the Yuga Cycle, the start and end dates of the Kali Yuga remain shrouded in mystery. Vedic C hronolo gy and the Geological Time Scale In this essay we will compare the system of chronology described in the Vedic literatures of India with the chronological system devised by geologists and paleontologists to date the history of life on the earth. Since the time of Charles Lyell in the mid-nineteenth century, geologists have accepted that the history of the earth must be measured in millions or even hundreds of mil- lions of years--a view that contrasts sharply with earlier Christian chronology that set the date of the earth's creation at about 4,004 B. C. At the present time geologists estimate that the earth has existed for some 4.6 billion years, and that highly organized life forms have existed for about 600 million years. It is not so widely known that the Vedic liter- atures of India, such as the Bhagavad-gHii. and the Srimad-Bhagavatam, also give an account of history that extends over hundreds of millions and even billions of years. The Vedic and geolog- ical systems of chronology have completely dif- ferent origins, but they divide time into broadly similar subdivisions, and thus it is natural to ask whether or not they have anything in common. -

Astrological World Cycles By Tara Mata (Laurie Pratt) Published in Serial Format in 1932-33 IN a series of articles, of which this is the first, the writer proposes to demonstrate the profound connection of an astronomical phenomenon, known as the Precession of the Equinoxes, with the history of mankind and the great cycles of the world. The true Age, or Yuga, of the present world-period, in reference to the Grand Cycle of Time, symbolized by the stars in their courses, will be pointed out, and certain erroneous ideas that have been circulated by modern philosophical literature, due to misunderstanding of the ancient Hindu Scriptures, will be corrected. Authority Is Great Hindu Sage Readers of EAST-WEST will be interested to know that the chief authority for the writer’s central thesis, which will be developed mainly in the second article of this series, is a small work, published privately in India, entitled: "The Holy Science," by Swami Yogananda’s Guru and Master, Swami Sri Yukteswar Giriji Maharaj, founder of Sadhumandal (counsel of sages) and its various Sat-Sanga (fellowship) branches in different parts of India. This saintly Guru is a learned and illuminating commentator on the Bhagavad Gita and other Scriptures, including the Christian Bible, and has, in addition, a grasp of modern science that entitles his views to a very respectful hearing. Systems of Chronology The many systems of chronology adopted by different nations at various times are usually the source of great confusion to later historians and archaeologists in their attempts to fix the periods of history. -

Ill Abstract Most research indicates that almost 100% of British adults know their birth-sign. Astrology is an accepted part of popular culture and is an essential feature of tabloid newspapers and women's magazines, yet is regarded as a rival or, at worst, a threat, by the mainstream churches. Sceptical secular humanists likewise view it as a potential danger to social order. Sociologists of religion routinely classify it as a cult, religion, new religious movement or New Age belief. Yet, once such assumptions have been aired, the subject is rarely investigated further. If, though, astrology is characterised as New Age, an investigation of its nature may shed light on wider questions, such as whether many Christians are right to see New Age as a competitor in the religious market place. -

There are different processes to achieve perfection in each age. In the Srimad Bhagvatam (12.3.52) it is explained that: kåte yad dhyäyato viñëuà / tretäyäà yajato makhaiù dväpare paricaryäyäà / kalau tad dhari-kértanät In Satya Yuga, the process to achieve perfection is meditating on the Supreme Lord. In Treta Yuga the process to achieve perfection is performing yajnas. In Dvapara Yuga the process to achieve perfection is deity worhip in the temple. In Kali Yuga the process to achieve perfection is chanting of the holy names of the Lord. In Kali Yuga, it is not possible to perform the processes recommended in the other three yugas. Why is that? In the Srimad Bhagavatam (SB 1.1.10) it is explained: präyeëälpäyuñaù sabhya / kaläv asmin yuge janäù mandäù sumanda-matayo / manda-bhägyä hy upadrutäù In Kali yuga, we cannot practice all the processes practiced in other ages because: People in the age of kali are: 1. Short lived, 2. Quarrelsome, 3. Lazy, 4. Misguided, 5. Unlucky and, 6. Always disturbed. Therefore in Kali Yuga the only method recommended is the repeated chanting of the holy names of the Lord. Chanting was powerful in other ages too, but it is especially powerful in Kali Yuga. Simply by chanting the holy name of Krishna one can be liberated and return home, back to God Head. So even if you are able to perform other processes of devotional service you can make chanting the main method for your own spiritual progress. -
