The Human Cycle 25 The Human Cycle The Ideal of Human Unity War and Self-Determination VOLUME 25 THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SRI AUROBINDO © Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust 1997 Published by Sri Aurobindo Ashram Publication Department Printed at Sri Aurobindo Ashram Press, Pondicherry PRINTED IN INDIA The Human Cycle The Ideal of Human Unity War and Self-Determination Publisher's Note The Human Cycle was ®rst published in monthly instalments in the review Arya between August 1916 and July 1918 under the title The Psychology of Social Development. Each chapter was written immediately before its publication. The text was revised during the late 1930s and again, more lightly, in 1949. That year it was published as a book under the title The Human Cycle. The Publisher's Note to the ®rst edition, which was dictated by Sri Aurobindo, is reproduced in the present edition. The Ideal of Human Unity was written and published in monthly instalments in the Arya between September 1915 and July 1918. In 1919 it was brought out as a book. Sri Aurobindo wrote a Preface to that edition which is reproduced in the present volume. He revised the book during the late 1930s, before the outbreak of World War II. References to political developments of the period between the world wars were introduced at this time, often in footnotes. In 1949 Sri Aurobindo undertook a ®nal revision of The Ideal of Human Unity. He commented on the changed international situation in footnotes and made alterations here and there throughout the book, but brought it up to date mainly by the addition of a Postscript Chapter. In 1950 the revised text was published in an Indian and an American edition. Five of the essays making up War and Self-Determination were published in the Arya between 1916 and 1920. In 1920 three of them Ð ªThe Passing of War?º, ªThe Unseen Powerº and ªSelf- Determinationº Ð along with a Foreword and a newly written essay, ªThe League of Nationsº, were published as a book. In later editions the other two Arya essays, ª1919º and ªAfter the Warº, were added by the editors. The reader has therefore to go back in his mind to the events of that period in order to follow the line of thought and the atmosphere in which it developed. At one time there suggested itself the necessity of bringing this part up to date, especially by some reference to later developments in Nazi Germany and the development of a totalitarian Communist regime in Russia. But afterwards it was felt that there was suf®cient prevision and allusion to these events and more elaborate description or criticism of them was not essential; there was already without them an adequate working out and elucidation of this theory of the social cycle. November, 1949 Chapter I The Cycle of Society ODERN Science, obsessed with the greatness of its physical discoveries and the idea of the sole existence Mof Matter, has long attempted to base upon physical data even its study of Soul and Mind and of those workings of Nature in man and animal in which a knowledge of psychology is as important as any of the physical sciences. Its very psychol- ogy founded itself upon physiology and the scrutiny of the brain and nervous system. It is not surprising therefore that in history and sociology attention should have been concentrated on the external data, laws, institutions, rites, customs, economic fac- tors and developments, while the deeper psychological elements so important in the activities of a mental, emotional, ideative being like man have been very much neglected. This kind of science would explain history and social development as much as possible by economic necessity or motive, Ð by economy un- derstood in its widest sense. There are even historians who deny or put aside as of a very subsidiary importance the working of the idea and the in¯uence of the thinker in the development of human institutions. The French Revolution, it is thought, would have happened just as it did and when it did, by economic necessity, even if Rousseau and Voltaire had never written and the eighteenth-century philosophic movement in the world of thought had never worked out its bold and radical speculations. Recently, however, the all-suf®ciency of Matter to explain Mind and Soul has begun to be doubted and a movement of emancipation from the obsession of physical science has set in, although as yet it has not gone beyond a few awkward and rudimentary stumblings. Still there is the beginning of a percep- tion that behind the economic motives and causes of social and historical development there are profound psychological, even perhaps soul factors; and in pre-war Germany, the metropolis of 6 The Human Cycle rationalism and materialism but the home also, for a century and a half, of new thought and original tendencies good and bad, bene®cent and disastrous, a ®rst psychological theory of history was conceived and presented by an original intelligence. The earliest attempts in a new ®eld are seldom entirely successful, and the German historian, originator of this theory, seized on a luminous idea, but was not able to carry it very far or probe very deep. He was still haunted by a sense of the greater impor- tance of the economic factor, and like most European science his theory related, classi®ed and organised phenomena much more successfully than it explained them. Nevertheless, its basic idea formulated a suggestive and illuminating truth, and it is worth while following up some of the suggestions it opens out in the light especially of Eastern thought and experience.

  • When Did Kali Yuga Start, How Long Is/Was It, and When Will It (Or Did It) End?
When did Kali Yuga start, how long is/was it, and when will it (or did it) end? In the book The Holy Science (1894) Sri Yukteswar clarified that a complete Yuga Cycle takes 24,000 years, and is comprised of an ascending cycle of 12,000 years when virtue gradually increases and a descending cycle of another 12,000 years, in which virtue gradually decreases (See the above figure). Hence, after we complete a 12,000-year descending cycle from Satya Yuga -> Kali Yuga, the sequence reverses itself, and an ascending cycle of 12,000 years begins which goes from Kali Yuga -> Satya Yuga. Yukteswar states that, “Each of these periods of 12,000 years brings a complete change, both externally in the material world, and internally in the intellectual or electric world, and is called one of the Daiva Yugas or Electric Couple.” Unfortunately, the start and end dates as well as the duration of the ages are not agreed upon, and Sri Yukteswar (who I have deep faith in) is one of many individuals that have laid out differing dates, times, and structures. “In spite of the elaborate theological framework of the Yuga Cycle, the start and end dates of the Kali Yuga remain shrouded in mystery. The popularly accepted date for the beginning of the Kali Yuga is 3102 BCE, thirty-five years after the conclusion of the battle of the Mahabharata.” This quote is taken from a well-researched article, “The End of the Kali Yuga in 2025: Unravelling the Mysteries of the Yuga Cycle in the New Dawn online magazine which can be found HERE.

THE SA-VIJNANAM PROJECT Working Paper Number 1 VEDIC CHRONOLOGY AND THE GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE by Richard L. Thompson THE SA-VIJNA.NAM PROJECT Working Paper Number 1. VEDIC CHRONOLOGY AND THE GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE by Richard L. Thompson Published by the Sa-vijfianam Project 51 West Allens Lane, Philadelphia, Pa. 19119 @ 1981 Richard L. Thompson All rights reserved. Printed in U. S. A. Vedic C hronolo gy and the Geological Time Scale In this essay we will compare the system of chronology described in the Vedic literatures of India with the chronological system devised by geologists and paleontologists to date the history of life on the earth. Since the time of Charles Lyell in the mid-nineteenth century, geologists have accepted that the history of the earth must be measured in millions or even hundreds of mil- lions of years--a view that contrasts sharply with earlier Christian chronology that set the date of the earth's creation at about 4,004 B. C. At the present time geologists estimate that the earth has existed for some 4.6 billion years, and that highly organized life forms have existed for about 600 million years. It is not so widely known that the Vedic liter- atures of India, such as the Bhagavad-gHii. and the Srimad-Bhagavatam, also give an account of history that extends over hundreds of millions and even billions of years. The Vedic and geolog- ical systems of chronology have completely dif- ferent origins, but they divide time into broadly similar subdivisions, and thus it is natural to ask whether or not they have anything in common.

  • Tara Mata – Astrological World Cycles
Astrological World Cycles By Tara Mata (Laurie Pratt) Published in Serial Format in 1932-33 IN a series of articles, of which this is the first, the writer proposes to demonstrate the profound connection of an astronomical phenomenon, known as the Precession of the Equinoxes, with the history of mankind and the great cycles of the world. The true Age, or Yuga, of the present world-period, in reference to the Grand Cycle of Time, symbolized by the stars in their courses, will be pointed out, and certain erroneous ideas that have been circulated by modern philosophical literature, due to misunderstanding of the ancient Hindu Scriptures, will be corrected. The writer will attempt to make all astronomical and astrological references clear enough to be understood by those with only a very elementary knowledge of those sciences. Authority Is Great Hindu Sage Readers of EAST-WEST will be interested to know that the chief authority for the writer’s central thesis, which will be developed mainly in the second article of this series, is a small work, published privately in India, entitled: "The Holy Science," by Swami Yogananda’s Guru and Master, Swami Sri Yukteswar Giriji Maharaj, founder of Sadhumandal (counsel of sages) and its various Sat-Sanga (fellowship) branches in different parts of India. This saintly Guru is a learned and illuminating commentator on the Bhagavad Gita and other Scriptures, including the Christian Bible, and has, in addition, a grasp of modern science that entitles his views to a very respectful hearing. Systems of Chronology The many systems of chronology adopted by different nations at various times are usually the source of great confusion to later historians and archaeologists in their attempts to fix the periods of history.

  • Prophecy, Cosmology and the New Age Movement: the Extent and Nature of Contemporary Belief in Astrology
PROPHECY, COSMOLOGY AND THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT: THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF CONTEMPORARY BELIEF IN ASTROLOGY NICHOLAS CAMPION A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Bath Spa University College Study of Religions Department, Bath Spa University College June 2004 Acknowledgments I would like to acknowledge helpful comments and assistance from Sue Blackmore, Geoffrey Dean, Ronnie Dreyer, Beatrice Duckworth, Kim Farnell, Chris French, Patrice Guinard, Kate Holden, Ken Irving, Suzy Parr and Michelle Pender. I would also like to gratefully thank the Astrological Association of Great Britain (AA), The North West Astrology Conference (NORWAC), the United Astrology Congress (UAC), the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR) and the National Council for Geocosmic Research (NCGR) for their sponsorship of my research at their conferences. I would also like to thank the organisers and participants of the Norwegian and Yugoslavian astrological conferences in Oslo and Belgrade in 2002. Ill Abstract Most research indicates that almost 100% of British adults know their birth-sign. Astrology is an accepted part of popular culture and is an essential feature of tabloid newspapers and women's magazines, yet is regarded as a rival or, at worst, a threat, by the mainstream churches. Sceptical secular humanists likewise view it as a potential danger to social order. Sociologists of religion routinely classify it as a cult, religion, new religious movement or New Age belief. Yet, once such assumptions have been aired, the subject is rarely investigated further. If, though, astrology is characterised as New Age, an investigation of its nature may shed light on wider questions, such as whether many Christians are right to see New Age as a competitor in the religious market place.

Kali-Yuga and The Kalki-Avatara Kali-Yuga and the Kalki-Avatara v. 11.13, www.philaletheians.co.uk, 30 July 2021 Page 1 of 22 BUDDHAS AND INITIATES SERIES KALI-YUGA AND THE KALKI-AVATARA Abstract and train of thoughts 1 Kali-Yuga is the age of darkness, misery and sorrow we live in. There is one thing peculiar to the present age that may be used by the student. 7 Consciousness’ eternal pilgrimage from Light to Darkness is a long cycle from Alpha to Omega. 7 When the Kalki-Avatara appears, our sufferings in this world will come to an end. If Vishnu is represented in his forthcoming and last appearance as the Tenth Avatara, it is only because every unit held as an androgyne manifests itself doubly. Messiah is the fifth emanation, or potency. 9 The Kalki-Avatara will come forth from Shambhala, the City of Gods. 9 The heaven will open and He will appear on a white horse. 10 (Did you know that the Christian Advent was copied from the Hindu?) 11 In him was life, and Life was the Light of men. He is the beginning and the end of separateness (i.e., selflessness). He will appear as Maitreya-Buddha in the Seventh Race. 11 The first teacher of this round, on this planet, was a Dhyani-Chohan. The one who will appear at the close of the Seventh Race will again be a Dhyani-Chohan. 12 He will incarnate into the whole humanity collectively, not individualised in one man. 12 Then justice, order, and true brotherly love will be finally restored on earth.

  • Kirtanam (Chanting) Why Is Chanting the Holy Name the Yuga Dharma for Kali Yuga?
Gopal’s Fun School (GFS) RS No. Gopinath-Nitai-007 Name: _________________________________ Date: ______________ 2. Kirtanam (Chanting) Why is chanting the holy name the Yuga dharma for Kali Yuga? There are different processes to achieve perfection in each age. In the Srimad Bhagvatam (12.3.52) it is explained that: kåte yad dhyäyato viñëuà / tretäyäà yajato makhaiù dväpare paricaryäyäà / kalau tad dhari-kértanät In Satya Yuga, the process to achieve perfection is meditating on the Supreme Lord. In Treta Yuga the process to achieve perfection is performing yajnas. In Dvapara Yuga the process to achieve perfection is deity worhip in the temple. In Kali Yuga the process to achieve perfection is chanting of the holy names of the Lord. In Kali Yuga, it is not possible to perform the processes recommended in the other three yugas. Why is that? In the Srimad Bhagavatam (SB 1.1.10) it is explained: präyeëälpäyuñaù sabhya / kaläv asmin yuge janäù mandäù sumanda-matayo / manda-bhägyä hy upadrutäù In Kali yuga, we cannot practice all the processes practiced in other ages because: People in the age of kali are: 1. Short lived, 2. Quarrelsome, 3. Lazy, 4. Misguided, 5. Unlucky and, 6. Always disturbed. Therefore in Kali Yuga the only method recommended is the repeated chanting of the holy names of the Lord. Chanting was powerful in other ages too, but it is especially powerful in Kali Yuga. Simply by chanting the holy name of Krishna one can be liberated and return home, back to God Head. So even if you are able to perform other processes of devotional service you can make chanting the main method for your own spiritual progress.

Over 400,000 humanoid races and their various planetary worlds and societies are described in the Vedic texts that are procured and even scribed by such contacts. In this chapter we show that the Rg Veda’s genetic code, and Vedic Puranas neuroanatomical code, hyper-indexes earth mans genome and neuro-cybernetics intricately with the Rg Veda’s 432,000 Man- like species of our local universe. INTRODUCTORY NOTE “...As the Earth moves fully into a 4th dimensional frequency [hadronic horizon configuration] in consciousness, in the consciousness time zone of 2000 years (which is not as you count time, but is a level of consciousness) —it begins to merge with the other planetary systems and the consciousnesses [ETI, UTI, HTI etc.] that are exploring the other planetary systems. They begin to collapse into a harmonic resonance, where they indeed meet the future, and meet the past: the past and the future converge into the present…” —EMMANUEL (ultraterrestrial), April 6th 1990, Contact by Lake Geneva. PLEASE NOTE that our writing style is a kind of poetic semantic art, that is interdisciplinary, and does not represent any sectarian dogma, we encourage every one to conduct their own research, use their own creative cognition, and creative art, before arriving at any definite conclusions.
