Sego Lily July 2008 31 (4) July 2008 Volume 31 Number 4 Salt Lake Chapter Trek to the Beaver Dam Mountains By Bill Gray In April, eight Salt Lake Chapter members took a break from their long winter and headed south as far as they could get, actually ending up just over the border in Arizona. Somehow the Virgin River gorge and that part of the Beaver Dam Moun- tains feel as though they really be- long in Utah. Most of you have probably driven through the gorge on Interstate 15 en route to/from Las Vegas or Southern California, and have ad- mired the steep rugged cliffs where the river has carved its way down. From a speeding car it is possible to spot a few of the obvious standout plants of the Mojave Desert – Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia), Above: Crevice penstemon, Penstemon petiolatus, grows in Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) mostly inaccessible crevices in rugged limestone cliffs in and rather modest specimens of Le- Utah’s Beaver Dam Mountains. But we wanted to take time to get In this issue: out and really experience first hand the other unusual plants from this Salt Lake Chapter Trek to the Beaver Dam Mountains . 1 area. Received: 13 August 2012; in revised form: 26 October 2012 / Accepted: 30 October 2012 / Published: 9 November 2012 Abstract: To determine the evolutionary relationships among all members of the genus Atractylodes (Compositae, Cardueae), we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of one nuclear DNA (nrDNA) region (internal transcribed spacer, ITS) and one chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) region (intergenic spacer region of trnL-F). In ITS and ITS + trnL-F trees, all members of Atractylodes form a monophyletic clade. Atractylodes is a sister group of the Carlina and Atractylis branch. Atractylodes species were distributed among three clades: (1) A. carlinoides (located in the lowest base of the Atractylodes phylogenetic tree), (2) A. macrocephala, and (3) the A. lancea complex, including A. japonica, A. coreana, A. lancea, A. lancea subsp. luotianensis, and A. chinensis. The taxonomic controversy over the classification of species of Atractylodes is mainly concentrated in the A.

  • Chapter 4. Fodder Value of Poaceae Family Species in the Steppe Zone of Ukraine
191 Chapter 4. Fodder value of Poaceae family species in the steppe zone of Ukraine B. O. Baranovsky, L. O. Karmyzova, I. А. Ivanko Oles Honchar Dnipro National University Introduction 1 Poaceae is one of the largest families of vascular plants. It has about 10 thousand species and 700 genera. Members of the fam- ily are spread worldwide. They often participate as dominants and edificators in composition of vegetation cover in grassy types of the Earth vegetation. Members of Poaceae family hold an important position within other plants (food, feeding, medicinal, industrial), useful for mankind. Poaceae are among the ten most widely represented families in all areas of the world. Participation of Poaceae, as well as other monocotyledonous plants decreases with the distance from the most East to moderate, and to equatorial latitudes (Tolmachev, 1974). Within the territory of Ukraine Poaceae family includes 71 gen- era (of which only 4 genera in the cultural state) and 208 species; of which only 15 genera are in the cultural state (Determinant of Higher Plants of Ukraine, 1987). Long-term anthropogenic influence on the territory of the steppe of Ukraine has led to a significant transformation of native vegeta- tion. Nowadays, there is a significant reduction in species and ceno- tic diversity of ecosystems, in most of which the members of Poaceae family (grasses) dominate. 1 Baranovsky B. O., Karmyzova L. The flora and vegetation of the calcareous spring fen in the protected area (natural monument) “Arkaulovskoye Mire” (Republic of Bashkortostan, Southern Urals Region) was investigated. The species recorded comprised 182 vascular plants and 87 bryophytes (67 mosses and 20 liverworts), including 26 rare species listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bashkortostan and seven species listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation. The study area is notable for the presence of isolated populations of relict species whose main ranges are associated with humid coastal and mountainous regions in Central Europe. The vegetation cover of the protected area consists of periodically flooded grey alder - bird cherry forests, sedge - reed birch and birch - alder forested mire, sparse pine and birch forested mire with dominance of Molinia caerulea, base-rich fens with Schoenus ferrugineus, islets of meso-oligotrophic moss - shrub - dwarf pine mire communities, aquatic communities of small pools and streams, etc. Examination of the peat deposit indicates the occurrence of both historical and present-day travertine deposition.
