Il a appris de l’eau le reflet, Et il a construit le miroir. L’eau et le miroir sont devenus les symboles de la pureté et de la clarté. Tous les deux se sont assis sur la nappe de l’union pour la vie, Sur la nappe du nouvel an, Sur la nappe des croyances. Et c’est ainsi que l’eau est devenue sacrée Et elle a trouvé des incarnations célestes. Elle a été également citée comme l’origine première de la création dans beaucoup de mythes antiques. Pour toutes les espèces vivantes, l’eau est la source de la vie et la création de l’Homme et sa survie en dépendent. Dans le mythe de la création de Babylone, nous pouvons ainsi lire : « L’eau est un élément éternel. De l’union entre Apsû, le monstre des eaux douces et Tiamat, le monstre ou le dragon féminin des eaux salées naissent toutes les créatures. Apsû était la personnification d’un canal rempli d’eau qui faisait le tour de la Terre. La Terre était un terrain rond limité par les montagnes et couvert par une tente

    Open Linguistics 2017; 3: 396–418 Research Article Gianfilippo Terribili* Dēnkard III Language Variation and the Defence of Socio-Religious Identity in the Context of Early-Islamic Iran https://doi.org/10.1515/opli-2017-0020 Received January 25, 2017; accepted August 10, 2017 Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to illustrate as a case study, the linguistic and stylistic peculiarities characterizing the third book of the Dēnkard, one of the most authoritative texts in Zoroastrian Pahlavi literature (9th-10 th CE). The analysis will consider these features as part of a coherent system, styled to serve the dialectic strategies pursued by the Zoroastrian high priests in response to the pressures their own community was facing in the early Islamic period. In order to provide a more comprehensive overview on DkIII language distinctiveness, the research will underline the outward/inward dynamics, addressing both the relation of this theological dialectic with the surrounding socio-cultural environment and the leading- role claims of a group within a politically subordinated community. Keywords: Middle Persian, Pahlavi Literature, Iranian Philology 1 Introduction In tune with the present volume, seeking to integrate linguistic data concerning a specific text within the socio-cultural dynamics of the period in which a specific textual production flourished, may yield extremely interesting elements for scholars aiming to survey the development of broader acculturation processes. Within Iranian history, the early Islamic period offers a very rich field of investigation for sociolinguistic studies; the abundance of sources in our possession is in fact due to the activity of the multifaceted constituents of that society, while the presence of various and interacting agents offers a remarkable opportunity to adopt multiple point of views.

    Critical Studies in Texts & Programs of Human Sciences, Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies (IHCS) Monthly Journal, Vol. 21, No. 1, Spring 2021, 23-40 Review of Translation of “Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr, A Middle Persian Text on Late Antique Geography, Epic and History” in Persian Shima Jaafari Dehaghi* Abstract Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr is a Middle Persian treatise about the historical geography of Sasanian cities in Iran. So far, this treatise has been translated and published in Persian by Hedayat, Oriyan, Taffazoli, and Daryaee. In 2002, Daryaee published this text with Persian and English translation, and in 2009, Jalilian translated Daryaee’s book into Persian. In the present study, we examined Jalilian’s translation of this treatise. It is noteworthy that Jalilian mentioned in his book that the translation of the Middle Persian text is from Daryaee himself. To make the review more accurate and to compare it with other translations, Daryaee and Taffazoli’s translations are cited and compared. First, the transliteration of each sentence is mentioned, and then the translation is written in chronological order. Then, the review of the translations is mentioned. It can be concluded that each of the translations of Middle Persian texts into Persian has new points that, in turn, will help us to better understand Middle Persian texts and ancient Iranian thought. Why Was the Story of Arash-i Kamangir Excluded from the Shahnameh?* Saghi Gazerani Independent Scholar In contemporary Iranian culture, the legendary figure of Arash-i Kamangir, or Arash the Archer, is known and celebrated as the national hero par excellence. After all, he is willing to lay down his life by infusing his arrow with his life force in order to restore territories usurped by Iran’s enemy. As the legend goes, he does so in order to have the arrow move to the farthest point possible for the stretch of land over which the arrow flies shall be included in Iranshahr proper. The story without a doubt was popular for many centuries, but during the various upheavals of the twentieth century, the story of Arash the Archer was invoked, and in the hands of artists with various political leanings his figure was imbued with layers reflecting the respective artist’s ideological presuppositions.1 The most famous of modern renditions of Arash’s legend is Siavash Kasra’i’s narrative poem named after its protagonist. IRAN Caspian Sea Tehran Lorestan Province • Persian Jews have lived in the territories of today's Iran for over 2,700 years, since the first Jewish diaspora. when the Assyrian king Shalmaneser V conquered the (Northern) Kingdom of Israel (722 BC) and sent the Israelites (the Ten Lost Tribes) into captivity at Khorasan. In 586 BC, the Babylonians expelled large populations of Jews from Judea to the Babylonian captivity. • During the peak of the Persian Empire, Jews are thought to have comprised as much as 20% of the population. • there are some cities having the major population of Jews in Iran like Isfahan, Kashan, Hamadan, Nehavand and so forth. The city of Borujerd which is the main subject of our research is in this area, in a short distance from Nehavand (58 km). The Jews of Persia 500 BC-1960 AD (the Routledge atlas of Jewish history) the major cities of Jews settlement including Borujerd in Loristan province. • According to the encyclopaedia Judaica, The earliest report of a Jewish population in Iran goes back to the 12th century. It was *Benjamin of Tudela who claimed that there was a population of about 600,000 Jews. This number was later reduced to just 100,000 in the Safavid period (1501–1736), and it further diminished to 50,000 at the beginning of the 20th century, as reported by the *Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU) emissaries in Iran.

This descriptive-analytical study aims to examine some symbols and signs of Ancient Greek-Roman-Persian mythology in sport games and tools. This study attempts to identify shared themes, characteristics and the relationships between different myths to trace the development of cultures. This research proposes common origins for the myths from Ancient Persian and European cultures, and to support psychology theory and Semiotic history. The paper reports the similarities between Ancient Persian and old European mythologies to argue that those mythologies have a common source in spite of its different geographical regions. Mixing these sport symbols with myths indicates legends achieve to the power of signs. This mixing and fusion concept in sports competitions may represent in athletes to achieve myths’ worth. Also, the results show that sport symbols and signs as well as hero myths follow the same underlying pattern and emerged as national symbols and myths but remain as global ones even in contemporary era.
