Abstract: Bei Den Romanischen Wandmalereien in Der Krypta Der Abstract: Bei den romanischen Wandmalereien in der Krypta der Benediktinerabtei Marienberg im Vinschgau/Südtirol handelt es sich um einen umfangreichen sakralen Bildzyklus, der sowohl durch seine künstlerische Ausgestaltung als auch durch einen ungewöhnlich guten Erhaltungszustand zu den bedeutendsten Zeugnissen der Wandmalerei des 12. Jahrhunderts gerechnet werden muss. Thema der Wandmalereien sind die Majestas Domini in der Apsis, Engeldarstellungen am Gewölbe und die Darstellung des Himmlischen Jerusalems an der Westwand. Die Dissertation strebt eine monographische Untersuchung der romanischen Wandmalereien an. Trotz des hohen künstlerischen Ranges und ihrer singulären Stellung um 1180 sind wesentliche Fragen zu Ikonographie, Stil und Bildprogramm weitgehend offen und wurden hier neu gegriffen und erarbeitet. Ikonographisch zeigen die Ergebnisse einerseits in den süddeutschen Raum und die Reichenau, andererseits ins Vinschgau und nach Oberitalien. Für die Herkunft der Marienberger Werkstatt wurden Einflüsse aus dem Süden ins Veltlin bis nach Como und durch die seltenen Parallelen zu Sant’Angelo in Formis und Cefalu konkretisiert. The Romanesque wall paintings in the crypt of the Benedictine Marienberg Abbey in Vinschgau/South Tyrol have their own rich sacral picture cycle, which must also be counted among the important testimonies of wall painting in the 12th century due to its artistic design and good condition. The theme of the murals is the Majestas Domini in the apse, depictions of angels on the vault and the depiction of Heavenly Jerusalem on the west wall. The dissertation aims at a monographic examination of the Romanesque wall paintings. Despite the high artistic standing and her own opinion about 1180, questions are questions about iconography, style and picture program. Iconographically, the results show in southern Germany and Reichenau, in Vinschgau and in northern Italy. For the origin of the Marienberg workshop, a part from the south in Veltlin to Como and the mutual parallels to Sant'Angelo in Formis and Cefalu were specified. .

Young German-speaking lands in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries were home to the largest Jewish communities north of the Alps and Pyrenees and thus constituted key locations for Christian-Jewish interaction. This dissertation examines the monasteries of Germany—the primary centers of intellectual and cultural production in the high medieval Empire—as loci for that interaction. It explores both the social/economic and the cultural aspect of contact between monks and Jews. In the process, it challenges traditional interpretations of Christian-Jewish relations and helps to fill in the picture of the lives and activities of monks in this period. The study proceeds in three parts. Part one, comprising the first three chapters, examines the political context wherein Jews and monks interacted before investigating evidence of contact between Jews and monks in the social and economic spheres. This evidence demonstrates that Jewish communities and monasteries occupied similar John D. Young political positions in this society—due to their mutual reliance on the institution of privilege—and that they engaged frequently in business dealings with each other.

In South Tyrol (Southern Alps, Italy), and due to the region’s high plant diversity and isolated population, a unique traditional botanical knowledge of medicinal plants has flourished, which traces its history back to prehistoric times. However, changes in rural life and culture may threaten this unique biodiversity and cultural heritage. Our study aims to collect and analyze information on native plants used in traditional folk medicine, focusing on the preservation of botanical and cultural diversity. Methods: Data were collected through a review of published material that documents traditionally used medicinal plants of South Tyrol in order to capture the total diversity of plants and their usage. We evaluated different parameters, comprising the ethnobotanicity index (EI), ethnophytonomic index (EPI), relative frequency of citation (RFC), red list status, and regional legislation with regard to the plant species. Results: A total of 276 species, including 3 mushrooms and 3 lichens, were identified. These belonged to 72 families, most frequently to the Asteraceae, Rosaceae, and Lamiaceae. The most frequently cited species were Hypericum perforatum L., Urtica dioica L., and Plantago lanceolata L. According to 12 ICPC-2 disease categories, the most frequently treated human health symptoms were from the digestive and respiratory systems as well as the skin.

Rustic, sourdough breads (Fig. 1) made from wheat and rye have grown to become iconic symbols of the culinary food traditions in this region. History Wheat, the world’s largest crop, dates back to 17000 BC, when archeological evidence shows that people were collecting and eating emmer wheat in the Near East (Biodiversity Explorer, n.d.). Domesticated about 9,000 years ago, there are two types of wheat: durum wheat and bread wheat (Biodiversity Explorer, n.d.). Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) (Fig. 2) was derived from the hybridization of emmer wheat with Figure 2. Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivated in Vienna (Biodiversity Explorer.     chapter 10 Imagining the Audience in Eighteenth-Century Folk Theatre in Tyrol Toni Bernhart One of the most active and vibrant folk theatre landscapes in Europe may be found in the historical County of Tyrol, which includes today’s Bundesland of Tyrol in Austria as well as the two provinces of Südtirol/Bolzano and Trento in Italy. In Tyrol, folk theatre culture has been important and influential from the late Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, in particular during the 1700s. There exists much research on the plays themselves, their themes, and their motifs; some useful editions have also been published.1 There is, however, no research on folk theatre audiences, perhaps due to a decided lack of sources and the resulting need for a more complex reconstruction of the audiences’ composition and expectations than can be undertaken for better documented types of theatre. This essay, therefore, employs sources that include both ‘inscribed’ and ‘described’ audience depictions in order to help us gain insight into the audience(s) of Tyrolean folk plays.2 To more specifically define these terms: spectators are inscribed within dramatic texts themselves; audiences are described in reports and reviews on theatre performances as well as in books on the demography, economics, and culture of the region.
