The Little Prince in America 1943

« In all fairy tales — and I mean fairy tales and not tarradidles — the writer sooner or later gives away his secret. Sometimes he does it deliberately, sometimes unconsciously. But give it away he must, for that is a law of the fairy tale’s being — you must provide the key. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, in this new book ‘The Little Prince’, has honorably obeyed the law. He makes us wait for the secret no longer than the second chapter. ‘‘So I lived my life alone.’’ he says, ‘‘without any one I could really talk to’’. There it is. A clear and unequivocal statement, a confession as bitter as aloes and familiar as the day. [...] ‘The Little Prince’ certainly has the three essentials required by children’s books. It is true in the most inward sense, it offers no explanations and it has a moral. But this particular moral attaches the book to the grown-up world rather than the nursery. To be understood it needs a heart streched to the utmost by suffering and love, the kind of a heart that, luckily, is not often found in children [...] Children quite naturally see with the heart, the essential is clearly visible to 2 them. The little fox will move them simply by being a fox. They will not need his secret until they have forgotten it and have to find it again. »

Pamela L. Travers, writer of ‘Mary Poppins’, , Weekly Book Review, April 11, 1943.

« ‘The Little Prince’ is a parabole for grown people in the guise of a simple story for children — a fable with delightful, delicate pictures of the little Prince on his adventurings. It is a lovely story in itself which covers a poetic, yearning philosophy — not the sort of fable that can be tacked down neatly at its four cornes but rather reflections on what are real matters of consequence.. »

Beatrice Sherman Book Review, April 11, 1943.

Introduction

3 The Antoine de Saint-Exupéry estate – d’Agay, Editions Gallimard and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and several partners in France and the United States would like to celebrate the Little Prince’s 70th American anniversary, starting April 2013 and running through to 2014 for the release of Mark Osborne’s movie. Several events will be held in New York, Montreal and Northport, strengthening the bonds that unite the two continents.

The Little Prince was first published by Reynal & Hitchcock on April 6, 1943, in both English and French editions. Since its birth in the United States the book has become the most-read and most-translated literary work in the world, currently available in nearly 270 languages. A genuine publishing phenomenon, The Little Prince transcends time and space, presenting successive generations of young and adult readers with a vision of strong and universal – yet not always easily expressed – themes. Saint-Exupéry’s vision is not so much a ‘message’ as an ode to friendship, a wave of goodness that reminds us of things humanity should not forget.

“The Odyssey of the Little Prince” program

bilingual posters “The Odyssey of the Little Prince”

Over 1,000 bilingual posters will be distributed to schoolrooms and libraries across New York City. This brand new program will teach the New York-based history of The Little Prince, including the two cultures (French and American) that are inextricably linked in its origins. The program also provides a game- based approach to the story and to its philosophy and poetry, providing an introduction to the universal humanist ideals contained in Antoine de Saint- Exupéry’s work. The target audience includes young Americans but also bilingual children such as French-speakers who have recently arrived in the United States. The Little Prince is the French literary work that is the most read and the most translated throughout the world (270 languages and dialects).

The first poster provides historical background information on the book’s birth in America, including: a biography of Antoine de Saint- Exupéry, an illustrated chronology of his works, original quotes to provide a better understanding 6 of the story, and portraits of the Little Prince’s French and American friends (Jean Renoir, Annabella, James Dean, , etc.) The second poster focuses on the Little Prince’s world and communicates some of the basic ideas, key-words and quotes of the story. Young people are invited to take part in the international Create Bonds contest.

Teachers can use the posters as a teaching and entertainment tool in order to introduce children to the eponymous character’s extraordinary adventures and to begin a more detailed reading of the text itself.

Elements contained in the posters will be available for download at www.creerdesliens.com

The Little Prince Anniversary Event Conference followed by a screening and cocktails Speech by Philippe Forest « The Little Prince and Peter Pan » Peter Pan and the Little Prince both belong to a very small and select group of 20th century fictional characters who have attained almost mythical status, taking their place in the world of children’s legends alongside Andersen’s fairy-tale heroes, Collodi’s Pinocchio and Lewis Carroll’s Alice. There are numerous similarities between J. M. Barrie’s child who will not grow up and Saint-Exupéry’s child fallen from the stars – and yet, few have attempted to draw any comparisons between the two. This is the subject covered by French author Philippe Forest, whose novels The Eternal Child (1997) and The Century of Clouds (2010) respectively reimagined Barrie’s work and referenced Saint-Exupéry. New York is the ideal place to pay homage to characters that, while they were born from Old World literature, entered the world only because Americans were the first 9 to believe in them: through Frohman, who produced Barrie’s play in London and on Broadway in 1904/1905, and through Reynal & Hitchcock, who published Saint- Exupéry’s book in New York in 1943. Peter Pan and The Little Prince benefit from being read side by side in order tofully illuminate the poetic and pathetic depth of these fables of loss and desire, fables aimed at readers of all ages with their lesson that childhood should never be lost.

Philippe Forest is a Professor of Literature at the University of Nantes and has authored numerous literary essays, most of which have been published by Éditions Cécile Defaut. He works on the monthly Art Press magazine and on the NRF (Nouvelle Revue française) magazine, of which he is joint editor in chief. He has published several novels through Gallimard, including his most recent work, ‘Schrödinger’s Cat’ (2013) and ‘The Century of Clouds’ (2010); this latter novel won the Grand Prize for Literature at the Aéro-Club de France in 2011. He has written an article on Saint-Exupéry entitled ‘À la ligne’ (‘Starting a new line’) for the NRF’s special issue dedicated to ‘A Century of the NRF’. Another article, ‘Chacun est seul responsable de tous. Morale de Saint-Exupéry’ (‘We are each solely responsible for all. Saint-Exupéry’s moral’) in which he examines the idea of responsibility in Saint-Exupéry’s work, will shortly be published in the NRF’s collection entitled ‘Saint-Exupéry, Un engagement singulier’ (‘Saint-Exupéry: a singular commitment’). His novel Sarinagara (awarded the Prix Décembre 2004) was published by Mercury House in 2008 based on a by Pascale Torracinta. Letter to a Hostage Presentation

It is through its stage version that we plan to discover Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Letter to a Hostage, a work which exemplifies his humanist vision. Published in the United States in 1943 (the same year as The Little Prince), both works are dedicated to his novelist friend Léon Werth, who ‘lives in France where he is hungry and cold’, and who is Jewish. Written amid the upheaval of the Second World War, Letter

Saint-Exupéry, autoportrait, 1919 to a Hostage is autobiographical. Initially intended to be no more than a preface to his friend’s publishing project entitled 33 Days, it became a powerful work in its own right. Throughout the text Saint-Exupéry extols his most fundamental values: friendship, with its absolute demands, unshakeable faith, and potential brotherhood. It emphasizes the bonds that tie man to himself and those that tie men to each other. Letter to a Hostage is a strong and intimate work, a poetic rallying-cry – ‘Man must respect Man!’ – but also a cry for reason and resistance, for a return of light amid darkness. The author tries to find his way through devastation and disaster, using autobiographical events to recover a sense of the goodness of life. 11 In December 1940 a tormented and despairing Antoine de Saint-Exupéry boards the Siboney in Portugal, bound for the United States. Demobilized after his work with Reconnaissance Group II/33, he suffers strong doubts that Nazi occupation of France can ever be overcome. Powerless and grieving, he tears himself away from

his native land, his family and his friends Siboney (having learned in Lisbon that a close friend of his, Guillaumet, had gone missing in action). And yet it is in the midst of this darkness of the soul that he somehow finds within himself a way to carry on, by thinking of others, of absent friends, by remembering solitude in a crowd and fragile moments of happiness. Addressed to his friend, the hostage, and to all hostages – those under German occupation, the ‘forty million’ Frenchmen – Saint-Exupéry’s private and personal words acquire a universal meaning. Step by step the reader follows the author’s path to the rebirth of self and hope, and Letter to a Hostage acquires a gripping, paradoxical beauty.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry vanished during a mission in 1944, never learning the ultimate outcome of the war.

Exhibition project: The Little Prince in Bryant Park

Exhibition date: TBD

Situated in the middle of next to the venerable New York Public Library, Bryant Park is a haven of peace and offers a different yet lively pace amid the hustle and bustle of the city. The park and its “fairy-tale lawn” are an ideal location for events based on The Little Prince. Indeed, Saint-Exupéry liked to stroll not far from this little corner of heaven in 1941-1943, and it was near here that the Little Prince was born.

A Little Prince exhibition at Bryant Park would therefore provide an ideal opportunity and location to celebrate the American birth of the beloved character. A cultural exhibition like this one will enable the public to rediscover the 13 philosophy and poetry associated with the Little Prince.

The exhibition’s focus is contemporary creation. The tale is reinterpreted through thoroughly modern exhibits (constructions, cabins, objects, visual shows, etc.) that allow a new look into the world of the Little Prince. The aim is to reveal the hidden truths contained in the Little Prince without needing to be explicit. Emotion, discovery and wonder will enable the public to share Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s vision. Equally important, understanding the essential, hopeful truths contained in the work will send a strong message of Franco-American friendship.

Reading Room The Reading Room will give the public a chance to discover a number of Saint-Exupéry’s works in various different languages, including of course The Little Prince.

Project : The Little Prince, Sight and Touch

The Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation is launching a unique project for the 70th anniversary of the book The Little Prince: sharing the magic and dreams of this universally- renowned tale by making Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s drawings accessible for blind and visually-handicapped children. This is a pioneer project as these drawings, which illustrate the book and are inseparable from its origins, have never before been transcribed in relief. The tactile reading of the drawings will therefore accompany the reading of the text in Braille. This initiative will encourage the learning of tactile reading of drawings in relief for the benefit of blind and visually-impaired youth and will raise awareness of among members of the general public. These drawings in relief will thus constitute a great educational tool for these youth and will become a new domain for sharing and transmission between 15 sighted and blind persons, in the spirit of the humanist values so dear to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Colloque international Le Petit Prince

70 years after The Little Prince was first published in French and English on6 April 1943, the planned celebration in New York is shaping up to be one of the major literary events of 2013, attracting Saint Exupéry specialists, researchers and academics, along with writers and enlightened enthusiasts, from all over the world. The events will be held in April 2013 at various high-profile New York locations associated with the history and birth of the work, bringing together different viewpoints of one of the most widely read and translated books in the world. Lectures, debates and roundtables will provide a lively mixture of insights, historical (on the context of the Second World War and the ) and autobiographical (the book is a testament, marking a decisive stage in the life of this writer with a cause), but also literary, philosophical and scientific. Above and beyond the simple children’s story, this classic that defies all labels offers rich literary perspectives based on tales, myths and fables, and on image, cinema and language (somewhere between initiatory recital, poetry and the art of dialogue). It also invites moral and philosophical reflection (in the 16 legacy of Descartes, Pascal, Rousseau, Voltaire and Swift), particularly as regards the relations between living beings, man’s relationship with nature, knowledge, science and technology, not to mention musings on travel and adventure. Between microcosm and cosmos, the seriousness of grown-ups and the imagination of childhood, the Little Prince still speaks to us all despite the distance of years and stars.
