Tape Transcription Islam Lecture No. 1 Rule of Law Professor Ahmad Dallal ERIK JENSEN: Now, turning to the introduction of our distinguished lecturer this afternoon, Ahmad Dallal is a professor of Middle Eastern History at Stanford. He is no stranger to those of you within the Stanford community. Since September 11, 2002 [sic], Stanford has called on Professor Dallal countless times to provide a much deeper perspective on contemporary issues. Before joining Stanford's History Department in 2000, Professor Dallal taught at Yale and Smith College. Professor Dallal earned his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from Columbia University and his academic training and research covers the history of disciplines of learning in Muslim societies and early modern and modern Islamic thought and movements. He is currently finishing a book-length comparative study of eighteenth century Islamic reforms. On a personal note, Ahmad has been terrifically helpful and supportive, as my teaching assistant extraordinaire, Shirin Sinnar, a third-year law student, and I developed this lecture series and seminar over these many months. Professor Dallal is a remarkable Stanford asset. Frederick the Great once said that one must understand the whole before one peers into its parts. Helping us to understand the whole is Professor Dallal's charge this afternoon. Professor Dallal will provide us with an overview of the historical development of Islamic law and may provide us with surprising insights into the relationship of Islam and Islamic law to the state and political authority. He assures us this lecture has not been delivered before. So without further ado, it is my absolute pleasure to turn over the podium to Professor Dallal. -

Originated roles include Roads Courageous (Minnie Brinkley), and Senior Moments (Loretta). Sherry performs regularly with Ethics Follies and is a founding cast member of The Allegro Stage Company. She holds a degree in Music/Vocal Performance from UTSA and is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity. Sherry is a Texas Realtor with JB Goodwin Realtors. Anna Gangai is an active member of our city’s theatre community for the last 30 years performing the lead roles in Mame, Hello Dolly, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Gypsy, Master Class, Private Lives, and other classic musicals and plays. A charter member, Anna loves singing with the talented bunch from Allegro Stage Company. Ms. Gangai holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Texas at Austin and also attended Purdue University for MFA studies in Acting and Voice. Angelique Gabrielle Paccione is a professional dancer and choreographer from San Antonio, but her heart has always been taken by musical theatre. Her favorite roles include Grease (Sandy), The Heathers (Heather McNamara), Shout! The Mod Musical (Yellow), Winter Wonderettes (Missy), High School Musical (Sharpay), Annie (Lily St. Regis), Buddy Holly Story (Maria Elena), Beauty & the Beast (Mrs. Potts), and Chicago (Mona). The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. Dream Cast Announced for Disney's Aladdin
DREAM CAST ANNOUNCED FOR DISNEY’S ALADDIN An exceptional group of Australia and New Zealand’s most outstanding musical theatre performers and exciting fresh faces has been announced for Disney’s new musical comedy, Aladdin. They will be joined by Broadway performer Michael James Scott in the role of the Genie. Based on the classic Academy Award®-winning animated film,Aladdin will open in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre in August 2016. Tickets go on sale to the GP 8th March 2016. The dream cast for Aladdin has been achieved after intense and competitive auditions throughout Australia. It will be one of the most diverse multi-cultural casts to appear on the Australian stage. American performer Michael James Scott will play the pivotal role of the Genie. Michael has performed in many Broadway shows including the original company of The Book of Mormon, the 2010 Broadway and London revival of Hair, as well as the standby Genie in the original Broadway cast of Aladdin. He was most recently seen in Casey Nicholaw’s third current Broadway hit, Something Rotten. Joining him will be the exciting new discovery Ainsley Melham making his mainstage debut in the title role of Aladdin. Ainsley is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). The principal cast features international musical theatre star Adam Jon Fiorentino (Saturday Night Fever, Mary Poppins) as Kassim, stage & television performer Adam Murphy as Jafar and Robert Tripolino in the role of Omar. Filling out the principal ranks is one of Australia’s most accomplished character actors and musical theatre stars Troy Sussman as Babkak and stage and television actor Aljin Abella as Iago. -

Disney's NEWSIES to Take SHS Stage
Disney’s NEWSIES to take SHS Stage Students at SHS are hard at work preparing this year’s spring musical, Newsies. The show will be presented in the SHS auditorium on March 12-14 and 19-21 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 1 p.m. Adult tickets are $7 and student and senior (60+) tickets are $5. All tickets are reserved seating only and go on sale at the SHS Box Office on February 20. Box office hours will be 8-11 a.m. weekdays or by phone/voicemail (anytime) at 715-635-0210. Set in turn-of-the Nineteenth Century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. The New York newsies – boys and girls who sold newspapers on the street – went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for the chance to earn a livable wage. When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). -

Between Two Worlds: An Interview with Shirin Neshat Scott MacDonald A native of Qazvin, Iran, Shirin Neshat finished high school and attended college in the United States and once the Islamic Revolution had transformed Iran, decided to remain in this country. She now lives in New York City, where she is represented by the Barbara Gladstone Gallery. In the mid-1990s, Neshat became known for a series of large photographs, “Women of Allah,” which she designed, directed (not a trained photogra- pher, she hired Larry Barns, Kyong Park, and others to make her images), posed for, and decorated with poetry written in Farsi. The “Women of Allah” photographs provide a sustained rumination on the status and psyche of women in traditional Islamic cultures, using three primary elements: the black veil, modern weapons, and the written texts. In each photograph Neshat appears, dressed in black, sometimes covered completely, facing the camera, holding a weapon, usually a gun. The texts often appear to be part of the photographed imagery. The photographs are both intimate and confrontational. They reflect the repressed status of women in Iran and their power, as women and as Muslims. They depict Neshat herself as a woman caught between the freedom of expression evi- dent in the photographs and the complex demands of her Islamic heritage, in which Iranian women are expected to support and sustain a revolution Feminist Studies 30, no. 3 (Fall 2004). © 2004 by Feminist Studies, Inc. -

Why was Syriac Christianity not an imperial Church? Why did it not enter into a relationship with the authorities? This can be explained by pointing to the political situation of that community. I think that one of the reasons was bad experiences from the time of Chosroes II. The Story of Chosroes II The life of Chosroes II Parviz is a story of rise and fall. Although Chosroes II became later a symbol of the power of Persia and its ancient independence, he encountered numerous difficulties from the very moment he ascended the throne. Chosroes II took power in circumstances that today remain obscure – as it was frequently the case at the Persian court – and was raised to the throne by a coup. The rebel was inspired by an attempt of his father, Hormizd IV, to oust one of the generals, Bahram Cobin, which provoked a powerful reaction among the Persian aristocracy. The question concerning Chosroes II’s involvement in the conspiracy still remains unanswered; however, Chosroes II was raised to the throne by the same magnates who had rebelled against his father. Soon after, Hormizd IV died in prison in ambiguous circumstances. The Arabic historian, al-Tabari, claimed that Chosroes was oblivious of the rebellion. However, al-Tabari works were written several centuries later, at a time when the legend of the shah was already deeply rooted in the consciousness of the people. -

In a social justice context, American society has found ways to oppress people for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines sexism as a “prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex (“sexism”).” Voting rights in America were established in 1790, but it took years of petitioning at various women’s rights conventions before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution stating "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" was passed in 1920 (“Nineteenth Amendment”). Traditionally, men were supposed to be the strong, decisive, driven, courageous, money-making breed, while women were expected to be the nurturing, affectionate, weak subordinates. Today, we find men and women working in careers previously linked with sexism; men as nurses and teachers, women as CEOs and factory workers. -

1 Thank you for downloading this Audition Pack. We are very excited to announce that ‘Sister Act’ will be our next musical production in February 2021. Following our amazing success with The Wiz- ard of Oz, We Will Rock You and The Addams Fami- ly we plan to present something even more spec- tacular and it would be great to have you involved! Many of you have performed in our shows before, and for some of you this may be the first time you are joining us. It really is great to have many familiar and new students join our productions - whether that be on or off the stage. We have a fantastic theatre crew and you may wish to develop your tech- nical skills in theatre. Being part of this type of experience is very rewarding for everyone involved but is also a huge commitment. It is important for all those participating in the show to be aware of what commitment is needed. Rehearsals are two nights a week September - February as well as some week- end rehearsals. This is an exciting and challenging show and one we know we can achieve through your talent, drive and determination. Due to current school closures, we thought this would be a perfect opportunity for you to be research- ing and learning more about the show as well as preparing audition material. This pack provides more information about the show, characters and the audition material. More information will be released regarding actual audition dates, but for now please get busy prepar- ing.
