Disney's NEWSIES to Take SHS Stage Disney’s NEWSIES to take SHS Stage Students at SHS are hard at work preparing this year’s spring musical, Newsies. The show will be presented in the SHS auditorium on March 12-14 and 19-21 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 1 p.m. Adult tickets are $7 and student and senior (60+) tickets are $5. All tickets are reserved seating only and go on sale at the SHS Box Office on February 20. Box office hours will be 8-11 a.m. weekdays or by phone/voicemail (anytime) at 715-635-0210. Messages can also be left by emailing [email protected] Newsies is rich with history still relevant today. Set in turn-of-the Nineteenth Century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. The New York newsies – boys and girls who sold newspapers on the street – went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for the chance to earn a livable wage. When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience. .

Disney Movie Trivia Questions and Answers From: triviaquestionsworld.com/disney-movie-trivia 1. What are the names of the three good fairies from Sleeping Beauty? Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather The three fairies give Aurora the gift of beauty, the gift of song, and the last gift is to weaken Maleficent’s curse so that Aurora falls into a deep sleep instead of dying. Verna Felton, who is the voice of Flora, is also the voice of the fairy godmother in Cinderella. 2. Man was represented in the film by a 3-note motif, which later inspired the 2-note shark theme for Jaws. “Man is in the forest” was a code phrase used by Disney’s employees when Walt Disney was coming down the hallway. 3. What are the names of the two eels who are Ursula’s sidekicks? Flotsam and Jetsam Ah Disney, look at you being educational! Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo (not deliberately thrown overboard). • Then and Now Substantial Contributions to the History of Musical Theatre
THE OPPRESSION AND SEXISM OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN: THEN AND NOW SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATRE by KELLI OWENS A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Honors in the Major Program in Musical Theatre in the College of Arts and Humanities and in the Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term, 2014 Thesis Chair: Earl Weaver, MFA © 2014 Kelli Owens ii ABSTRACT A wise Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Freedom is never given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed (King 1).” For as long as men and women have shared the planet, sexism has been a universal issue in civilization. In a social justice context, American society has found ways to oppress people for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines sexism as a “prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex (“sexism”).” Voting rights in America were established in 1790, but it took years of petitioning at various women’s rights conventions before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution stating "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" was passed in 1920 (“Nineteenth Amendment”). Traditionally, men were supposed to be the strong, decisive, driven, courageous, money-making breed, while women were expected to be the nurturing, affectionate, weak subordinates. Today, we find men and women working in careers previously linked with sexism; men as nurses and teachers, women as CEOs and factory workers.
