Disney's NEWSIES to Take SHS Stage
Disney’s NEWSIES to take SHS Stage Students at SHS are hard at work preparing this year’s spring musical, Newsies. The show will be presented in the SHS auditorium on March 12-14 and 19-21 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 1 p.m. Adult tickets are $7 and student and senior (60+) tickets are $5. All tickets are reserved seating only and go on sale at the SHS Box Office on February 20. Box office hours will be 8-11 a.m. weekdays or by phone/voicemail (anytime) at 715-635-0210. Messages can also be left by emailing [email protected] Newsies is rich with history still relevant today. Set in turn-of-the Nineteenth Century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. The New York newsies – boys and girls who sold newspapers on the street – went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for the chance to earn a livable wage. When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).

Newsies Role Descriptions About the accents: Students who watch the movie or listen to the Broadway soundtrack will notice that many characters speak with a New York accent. Actors are welcome to use an accent when they audition, but it is not required. Because the characters in the story can be portrayed as coming from a variety of places in America and beyond, we will decide on each character’s “voice” (including accent) for performance once the roles are cast. About role genders: You will notice that many roles are listed as “male OR female playing male.” The lead roles in this show are overwhelmingly male characters. Because this story is based on an actual historical event, and nearly all newsies were male, we will still be costuming all newsies as “boys,” but most roles (as noted below) are available for performers of any gender. Character Breakdown Jack Kelly The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an oprhaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective of his best friend, Crutchie, and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability – especially when it comes to bantering with a certain female reporter. Must have a great pop tenor voice and sense of physicality. Gender: Male Accent: yes Age: 16 to 22 Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: Bb2 Crutchie A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papes. Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it deﬁne him; when in a jam, Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Crutchie is the heart of the resistance. Though his movement will suggest his bum leg, Crutchie should still be included in the dance numbers.
