And, in fact, it’s a decision that no one ever made. The Tony-winning Broadway rendition of Newsies, which brought audiences to their feet more than once in any given performance, almost wished itself into existence despite odds about equal to those faced by the ragtag band of New York City paperboys who challenged publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst at the dawn of the 20th century. “In July of 1899, when Pulitzer and his cronies decided to up the price they charged the Newsies for their ‘papes,’ a boy named Kid Blink threw down his stack of The World and called for a strike,” says Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions and the man behind all of Disney’s Broadway hits. “This was a time of widespread child labour, and the rights of those boys and girls were seriously abused. Kid Blink, who is the basis of Newsies’ Jack Kelly, didn’t want much. He just wanted a square deal and a fair shake.” And miraculously, after just two weeks, the paperboys won. Pulitzer capitulated. A compromise was reached, and a step was taken on the road to protecting children in the workforce. That story was all but forgotten until almost 100 years later when a writer named David Nasaw PHOTO: DEEN VAN MEER PHOTO: DEEN VAN published Children of the City: At Work and at Play in 1985. mirvish.com 5 EMT15JA_NewsiesEdit.indd 5 2015-06-19 12:52 PM The husband and wife duo of Bob Tzudiker a small measure of praise for the energetic and Noni White, who would go on to write choreography by the film’s director Kenny The Hunchback Of Notre Dame and Tarzan, Ortega and for its anthemic songs by among other films, concocted their original composer Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman. screenplay, inspired by the real-life strike, Released at a low point of moviegoer interest as a David-and-Goliath tale of plucky street in musicals, the all-singing, all-dancing story kids taking on the giants of newsprint. of a strike by the most vulnerable members Meanwhile, Disney was reinventing of the late 19th-century workforce faded into animation under the leadership of Michael history. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.

  • Disney's NEWSIES to Take SHS Stage
Disney’s NEWSIES to take SHS Stage Students at SHS are hard at work preparing this year’s spring musical, Newsies. The show will be presented in the SHS auditorium on March 12-14 and 19-21 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 1 p.m. Adult tickets are $7 and student and senior (60+) tickets are $5. All tickets are reserved seating only and go on sale at the SHS Box Office on February 20. Box office hours will be 8-11 a.m. weekdays or by phone/voicemail (anytime) at 715-635-0210. Messages can also be left by emailing [email protected] Newsies is rich with history still relevant today. Set in turn-of-the Nineteenth Century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. The New York newsies – boys and girls who sold newspapers on the street – went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for the chance to earn a livable wage. When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).
