JUNE 2007 AA Pilgrimagepilgrimage for Reconciliation JUNE 2007 AA pilgrimagepilgrimage for reconciliation During the third weekend of May servicemen and women from 32 countries met for the 49th International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes. Members of the Slovak Armed Forces in their ceremonial uniforms were joined by the members of the Slovak Republic`s prison and justice department, police, firefighting and rescue corps, and railway police. Many civilian employees of the Slovak ministries along with their families also took part in the event. The motto of this year’s pilgrimage was: “Let yourself be reconciled with God.” Military Bishop František Rábek and Commander of Training and Support Forces Maj Gen Ján Kačmár stood at the forefront of the Slovak delegation. On Saturday at noon the 159 Slovak pilgrims were joined by Slovak Defence Minister František Kašický and his wife. The tradition of the international military pilgrimage began to be recorded in 1958, on the 100th anniversary of the first appearance of the Virgin Mary. Slovak soldiers were invited to Lourdes for the first time in 1995 and since then they have missed not a single pilgrimage. The pilgrims had a rich programme during the weekend. A few hours after their arrival on Friday, they could get their fill as concerts were performed by military bands from various countries, while they could admire the beauty of ceremonial uniforms. Following the Slovak mass in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, soldiers and other pilgrims moved in processions to the Underground Basilica of St. Pious X, which on that particular night saw about 20 000 people. Slovak pilgrims together with the Polish delegation later held a mass at the Grotto where the Virgin Mary appeared. It was celebrated by Bishop Rábek in both Slovak and Polish. On Saturday night the most anticipated event was held – the torchlight procession, where a massive number of pilgrims singing songs and holding candles in their hands moved from the Cap de Vielle Plaza to the Rosary Basilica, carrying a symbolic light of life. On Sunday pilgrims took part in a Stations of the Cross Procession along the Via Sacra, where replicas of the Stations of the Cross are shown life size. The procession culminated in the Chapel of Calvary. Accompanied by all Slovak pilgrims, Defence Minister František Kašický placed a wreath at the Memorial to the Fallen Soldiers at the Peyramale Plaza in memory of all those who have lost their lives for their country. The highlight of the pilgrimage was the international mass served in the Underground Basilica of St. Pious X. The military pilgrimage in Lourdes ended with the release of doves as a symbol of peace. It should be added that two Slovak soldiers participated in the pilgrimage as part of a multi-national group of soldiers serving in the KFOR mission in Kosovo. The decision of the participating powers, i.e. France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, was made without any respect for Czechoslovakia and its representatives. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of the defence sector, i.e. the representatives of the ministry of defence and the Czechoslovak armed forces during the Czechoslovak (Munich) Crisis in the period from mid-March to the beginning of October 1938. There is also a question as to, whether there are similarities between the position then and the present-day position of the army in the decision-making process. Key words: Czechoslovak (Munich) Crisis, Munich Agreement, 1938, Czechoslovak Army, national security. Introduction The agreement in Munich (München), where the international conference took place on 29–30 September 1938, represents a crucial crossroads in the history of Czechoslovakia. By accepting the Munich Agreement, Czechoslovak President, Edvard Beneš, and representatives of his government made a decision that affected the nation not only for the next few years, but for decades thereafter. This so-called Munich Syndrome, then, is infamously blamed by many in Czechoslovak society for the fascist-like orientation of the so-called the Second Czechoslovak Republic (1938–1939) and the acceptance of the Communist coup d’état of 1948.

  • Sub-Saharan Africa in Czech Foreign Policy
CHAPTER 15 Chapter 15 Sub-Saharan Africa in Czech Foreign Policy Ondřej Horký-Hlucháň and Kateřina Rudincová FROM AN INTEREST IN AFRICA TO INTERESTS IN AFRICA?1 Back to Africa, but too late. This was the conclusion of the chapter devoted to Czech foreign policy towards Sub-Saharan Africa in the Yearbook of Czech Foreign Policy of the Institute of International Relations in 2012.2 Last year’s yearbook asserted that Czech foreign policy – in spite of budgetary austerity measures – had bounced off the bottom and attempted a “return to Africa”, which was, however, coming with a con- siderable delay. In 2013, this trend continued, characterized by the effort to deepen relations with traditional African partners, establish new relations or re-establish re- lations that had been put on ice. This effort was manifested in a 7% growth of Czech exports to the region. In a situation when the economic recession is still being felt in Europe, while Africa is experiencing record levels of economic growth, the awareness of the importance and possibilities of the African economy is growing faster than the crisis-struck foreign-policy tools of the Czech Republic may react. Most importantly, however, this interest in Africa is beginning to be felt by wider segments of Czech so- ciety, not merely the foreign policy actors, but gradually also foreign policy makers. It affects not only the media, but also the very companies that are seeking to expand their markets. The imported, but largely well-founded “Africa on the rise” fashion was, for example, also reflected in the employment of the term Emerging Africa in the names of both of the large and abundantly attended events organized by the MFA in 2013 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Pan-African organization on the opportunities for Czech business on the African continent.

V dubnu by oslavil 72 let.
