U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense met with Minister Vondra conclusions, the proposal for sharing early warning data bilaterally beca- me outdated. “In this context, we naturally thanked for the older pre-Lisbon offer ad indeed we concluded that in the light of Lisbon and other developments the original offer will not be needed,“ Minister Vondra said in a press con- ference following the meeting with William Lynn. “We will seek other ways for the Czech Republic to possibly join the NATO system in the future, but that however does not change anything in our support to the NATO missile defense architecture,“ Minister Vondra commented. According to him, the Czech Republic has always sought for the U.S. long-range missile defense system to be incorporated into NATO structures. According to U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense, the U.S. had not with- drawn their offer for setting up the SEW center. ”It is simply a matter that Wednesday, June 15, 2011, the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Re- public was the venue to a meeting of the Czech Defense Minister Alexandr Vondra with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn. The mee- ting attendees also included the U.S. Ambassador in the Czech Republic, H.E. Norman Eisen. Their discussions reviewed the Czech-U.S. defense relationship that has intensifi ed over the past twelve months. The dialogue centered on missile defense, particularly the Shared Early Warning (SEW) project that envisioned locating two computer terminals in Czech Armed Forces installations for the Czech Republic to have realti- me access to information on ballistic missiles launched as tracked by U.S. early warning sensors. The offer was initially presented to the Czech Re- public in November 2009 as one of many forms that bilateral cooperation between the Czech Republic and the United States takes. The 2010 NATO Summit in Lisbon adopted missile defense as a com- mon mission for the Alliance and set a range of specifi c requirements for capabilities the future NATO missile defense system will deliver to pro- vide protection to European Allies. One of the elements of that is sharing information on missile threats with all NATO Allies, including the Czech Republic, directly from HQ NATO. In the light of the Lisbon Summit was overshadowed by developments,“ Lynn underscored for the media and went on to say: ”There are many strands for the strategic cooperation between our two countries to follow and develop along.“ Minister Vondra also confi rmed there was a potential for expanding bi- lateral cooperation. ”We have a range of other fi elds where we have recent- ly started to work very specifi cally to the effect of identifying possible co- operation between the Czech Republic and U.S. with practical outcomes.“ The discussions also involved other topics – cooperation on research, helicopter crew training and theatre mobility using helicopters. In the meeting, Minister Vondra introduced to Deputy Secretary Lynn the princi- pal priorities for Czech Armed Forces development outlined in the White Book on Defense that was recently endorsed by the Czech Cabinet. After meeting the Czech Minister of Defense and following the press conference, the senior U.S. offi cials visited the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic to be hosted by the CHOD, General Vlas- timil Picek. Dear Reader, You may rightfully ask what it is for a magazine - A review - that you Contents just opened. The answer is quite simple but let me offer you a little bit of history fi rst. Back in 1994, the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Four Afghani Crosses 2 Republic started publishing a quarterly titled ”Armáda České republiky”. From January 1995, the magazine was published four times a year in Now or Never 6 a dedicated English version with the title of ”Army of the Czech Re- public”. The reason was obvious: to reach out and provide the foreign Fighting to Win Confi dence readership, primarily NATO nations’ armed forces personnel, with in- of Every Single Soldier and Airman 8 formation on developments in the Czech military that was starting to signifi cantly engage in various activities of the Partnership for Peace Face-2-Face with AWACS 10 programme at that time. Thus, many readers had the opportunity to read about training and equipment of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, involvement of Czech forces in operations in the Balkans as An Archbishop Instead of a Pilot 12 well as participation in foreign exercises. In 1997, the magazine was renamed and published with the title of Czech Army Today until De- Mentors with fi nger on the trigger 15 cember 1999. From January 2000, foreign readers were able to get quarterly copies of the periodical named Czech Armed Forces Today. Elite Tiger Air Manoeuvres 18 The logo and title of the Armed Force quarterly was changed again in 2008 as a slight modifi cation was made turning ”Today” into ”Review”. In the role of Combat Life Savers 22 Periodicity also altered over the years and got settled in 2008 on semi- annual publication. Over the past fi fteen years, the magazine sought to present information on the Armed Force of the Czech Republic, from A Valley Too Thorny 24 1999 with focus on progressive integration into NATO structures, per- formance of missions from Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of Opera- Together in Afghanistan 27 tion IFOR to today’s deployments of Czech Forces in Afghanistan for Operation ISAF. Pirates from the Horn of Africa 30 2011 has brought about another renaming for the journal as the title of Czech Armed Forces Review has changed to A Review, and that is the In Search of a Universal Soldier 34 periodical you are now browsing through. The date is l4th August, l99O, and Milenka Jackson is the interviewer. Mr. Winton, do you mind telling me about when you were born, and about your family? I was born on l9th May, l9O9, in Hampstead, London. My mother, at that time, must have been l9. She married my father when she was l7, and I was the second child. She, herself, was born in Nürnburg and her name was Wertheimer. She was, in fact, the first girl in Germany to pass the Abitur when that exam became available to ladies. My mother then was Wertheimer, and my father was Wertheim, and he was born, in fact, in Moscow, when his father, as a German, was American Consul to Moscow, which sounds very complicated, but that's as it was.

  • As a Young Man, He Saved 669 Children from the Nazis
As a young man, he saved 669 children from the Nazis. The world has lost one of its most inspiring men with the death of 106-year-old Sir Nicholas Winton. At the outbreak of World War Two, his efforts saved 669 children — most of them Jewish — from the Nazis. But Sir Nick is just as famous for what he did after the war; or, rather, what he didn’t do. He was born in England in 1909 to two recently emigrated German Jews. His family changed their last name from Wertheim to Winton, and converted from Judaism to Christianity. Nicholas Winton became a champion fencer, worked as a stockbroker, and was active in left- wing politics. While preparing to go on a ski vacation with a friend at the end of 1938, the two decided instead to go to Prague, which was the capital of Czechoslovakia, and is now the capi- tal of the Czech Republic. Winton and his friend found Prague in chaos, especially among the city’s large Jewish population. At the time, Nazi Germany was slowly moving across Czecho- slovakia, and there were no efforts to save Jewish children. So Winton took on the job himself. Working out of his hotel in Prague, he took down the names of thousands of children, and found people who could help smuggle them onto trains out of Czechoslovakia. Winton then went back to London and lobbied Europe’s governments to find places for all of them. Only England and Sweden agreed to take them in. During 1939, his contacts in Prague were able to get eight trainloads of children — a total of 669 in all — to foster families in London.

SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Milby, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin Adelman, Adviser Professor William J. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.

War on the Air: CBC-TV and Canada’s Military, 19521992 by Mallory Schwartz Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy degree in History Department of History Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Mallory Schwartz, Ottawa, Canada, 2014 ii Abstract War on the Air: CBC-TV and Canada‘s Military, 19521992 Author: Mallory Schwartz Supervisor: Jeffrey A. Keshen From the earliest days of English-language Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television (CBC-TV), the military has been regularly featured on the news, public affairs, documentary, and drama programs. Little has been done to study these programs, despite calls for more research and many decades of work on the methods for the historical analysis of television. In addressing this gap, this thesis explores: how media representations of the military on CBC-TV (commemorative, history, public affairs and news programs) changed over time; what accounted for those changes; what they revealed about CBC-TV; and what they suggested about the way the military and its relationship with CBC-TV evolved. Through a material culture analysis of 245 programs/series about the Canadian military, veterans and defence issues that aired on CBC-TV over a 40-year period, beginning with its establishment in 1952, this thesis argues that the conditions surrounding each production were affected by a variety of factors, namely: (1) technology; (2) foreign broadcasters; (3) foreign sources of news; (4) the influence
