THESIS SEARCH OF IDENTITY OF THE OTTOMAN STATE AND REPUBLIC OF TURKEY (1718–1938) UFUK ŞİMŞEK Advisor: Assistant Professor. Dr. Yavuz ÖZDEMİR 2008- Page: 367+VII Jury: Assistant Professor. Dr. Yavuz ÖZDEMİR Professor. Dr. Hikmet ÖKSÜZ Associate Professor. Dr. A.Sinan BİLGİLİ Associate Professor. Dr. Nevzat CAN Assistant Professor. Dr. Selahattin TOZLU The study was centred upon the formation of Turkish national identity in the course of history. The years 1718-1938 when the reshaping and formation of national identity started were studied. National consciousness began to rise around 1718 and 1938 became a turning point for ‘’enlightenment’’. The study goes through the changes in the fields of legitimacy, ideologies, production methods and social structure. The period when the Ottoman Empire made itself felt on traditional state and social forms was analysed. Empires were replaced by the nation states and traditional communities by modern ones. The structure of legitimacy lost ground during this period. The privileges dynasty and religion enjoyed were directed towards the nation. Every nation state aimed to build its own identity which would provide it with legitimacy by either altering its own state structure or establishing a new state. The Ottoman Empire and the following Turkish Republic went heavily ahead with nation state- oriented policies. Turkish nation state emerged through the newly founded republic in Atatürk’s lead. Turkish national identity was created by the initiatives in the fields of education, army and law under the control of the modern state. This formation process corresponded with that of its contemporaries. Every single person living in Anatolia not any other ethnicity group experienced the process of formation.

Date lQ,9 ...... ... .................... ABSTRACT The thesis asks a central question: what is the nature of the relationship between state security and domestic politics in contemporary Turkey? It aims to show that although the pendulum of Turkish politics has swung back and forth between democratic elections and military interventions, in the last decade a new set of historically conditioned discourses and practices of state security have fused the political and military realms to produce a peculiar regime which I call security govemmentality. Understanding the traits of Turkish security governmentality is the task of the thesis. It adopts a genealogical approach. The subject-matter analyzes both the historical-political conditions within which security governmentality emerged as a dominant practice of rule and the prospects of its dissolution. Indeed, the dissolution of security governmentality gained an air of expectancy particularly after 1999 when Turkey was granted an 'official candidacy' and started to adapt the EU democratic membership conditionality.

The Turkish Model, the Double-Security Dilemma, and the Political Reproduction of State Polities in the Middle East Victoria Dimitri ARAJ Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Management, Law and Social Sciences University of Bradford 2018 Abstract Victoria Dimitri Araj The Turkish Model, the Double-Security Dilemma, and the Political Reproduction of State Polities in the Middle East Keywords: alliance-building, Turkish foreign policy, Islamic neoliberalism, Justice and Development Party, Turkish domestic politics Conceptually the aims of this thesis are to show the salient features of the political reproduction of states as a necessity for their survival as they continually face a double-security dilemma in the neoliberal era. Empirically this thesis examines Turkey’s ruling party from 2002 to 2015. The Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) maintained authority by mitigating the polities and actors that posed vertical and horizontal competition to their power (the double-security dilemma of domestic and international threats faced by state rulers). To outcompete and absorb its rivals, the AKP maintained a post-Islamist alliance-building model of political reproduction through a globalized Islamic neoliberal authority pattern until 2011. This became popularized as the ‘Turkish Model’, a model of political reproduction framed as suitable for other Muslim-majority states. The findings from data analysis show that to maintain the constitutive sovereignty of the Turkish state, the AKP built a post-Islamist hegemony.

Militarism, Democracy, and Concordance: The Role of Citizenry in (Re)- Establishing Democratic Order in Argentina and Turkey A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School Of the University of Cincinnati In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Department of Sociology Of the College of Arts and Sciences by Adem Üstün ÇATALBAŞ M.A. Selcuk University August 2012 Committee Chair: Steven Carlton-Ford, Ph.D. Abstract The role of the citizenry is often neglected in the literature about democratization but there is a growing scholarly attention – across the globe -- to the role of the citizenry in democratic development. This dissertation focuses on the democratic development in Argentinean and Turkish contexts with a specific emphasis on the role of citizenry in each case. Argentina and Turkey are two different social contexts – historically, regionally, culturally, etc. Yet, their political progress and civil-military relations show similarities. National militaries in each country have interrupted democratic order several times. This study examines the democratization efforts in each country after military rule. The research question -- ‘what defines the quality of a democracy during and after the period of transition of power from a military rule to a democratic one?’ -- is designed to comprehend both militarization and democratization contexts from a comparative historical sociological perspective. The comparative historical sociological methodology of the study not only focuses on comparing two countries but also considers the comparison of past and present transformations of civil-military relations and democratic order in each country. The study concludes that the quality of a democracy depends on how successful three actors – namely citizenry, military, and political elites – are in establishing concordance on the quality of the democratic regime.

  • Comparing Turkey and Iran in Political Science and Historical Sociology: a Critical Review Agah Hazır*
TURKISH JOURNAL OF MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES Türkiye Ortadoğu Çalışmaları Dergisi Vol: 2, No: 1, 2015, ss.1-30 Comparing Turkey and Iran in Political Science and Historical Sociology: A Critical Review Agah Hazır* Abstract This article reviews existing comparative literature on Iran and Turkey in terms of their approaches, themes and findings. It extracts and critically analyses two dominant trends in this literature; Comparative Analyses of Cultures and Comparative Analyses of Modernizations. This paper argues that, these two common lines of approaching have serious limitations since they carry the traces of orientalist and ethnocentric assumptions. New literature on this topic however, offers new avenues of research, enabling the debate to avoid the above mentioned pitfalls. As a conclusion, this critical review points to certain dynamics to consider (over-politicization of the Iran-Turkey comparisons and the impact of international developments) in order to facilitate stronger comparative frameworks.

This series aims to further our understanding of the origins, dealings, decisions, and outcomes of social movements by fostering dialogue among many traditions of thought, across European nations and across continents. All theoretical perspectives are welcome. Books in the series typically combine theory with empirical research, dealing with various types of mobilization, from neighborhood groups to revolutions. We especially welcome work that synthesizes or compares different approaches to social movements, such as cultural and structural traditions, micro- and macro-social, economic and ideal, or qualitative and quantitative. Books in the series will be published in English. One goal is to encourage non- native speakers to introduce their work to Anglophone audiences. Another is to maximize accessibility: all books will be available in open access within a year after printed publication. 21:510:361 RUTGERS-NEWARK FALL 2016 INSTRUCTOR: Reza Mortaheb ([email protected]) History of Modern Middle East Class Meetings: Wed 11:30 AM-12:50 PM & Fri 11:30 AM-12:50 PM in Engelhard Hall 209 Course Overview: The interconnecting regions stretching from Northwest Africa to Southwest Asia and the Iranian Plateau, currently known as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), have historically been the breeding ground for the world's greatest civilizations, thanks largely to the geographical positioning at an international crossroads where Mediterranean, Atlantic, African, European, and Asian histories met and commingled. With its porous and ever-shifting boundaries MENA has also acted, over the centuries, as an important conduit between and among adjacent communities, cultures, societies, and states. As such, since 1800 in tandem with the rest of the world and in response to both external and internal forces MENA underwent transformations in political, economic, social, and cultural realms — a series of processes which may collectively be called modernity. This course surveys the various ways in which modernity arose, and was encountered, at different levels across MENA in the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As lived in daily life, embodied in the form of reforming policies, new state apparatuses and institutions, or even experienced as a set of worldviews, modernity assumed many guises ranging from new modes of knowledge production, communications and transportation, city planning and governance, to novel forms of entertainment and consumption patterns, and above all in ways of thinking about the natural world, the state, and religion as well as normative gender roles.
