PROF. DR. ÖMER ŞEKERCİ ISPARTA, 2015 ABSTRACT EVOLUTION in POLITICS: BERNARD SHAW and ORHAN ASENA (A CONTRASTIVE STUDY) Önder ÇAKIRTAŞ Suleyman Demirel University, Department of Western Languages and Literatures PhD Thesis, 174 pages, November 2015 Advisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer ŞEKERCİ This PhD thesis underpins improved revision of attitudes towards ‘change, challenge and transition of politics and political ideologies’ in British and Turkish Drama in the 1900s and 1950s in respect with the defies of George Bernard Shaw’s social and political moves, his metaphorical and mythological standpoints, his ‘literal pen’ as a weapon against retrogressive policies of the ‘individual’ and community, and against traditional ‘well-made play’; on the other hand, a relative study on Orhan Asena who seems to be a transmitter of change and transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, as a socialist who is keen on the social aura of the transition period and the metamorphoses within some of his significant histori-political and socio-political plays in terms of a logical periodization of them. The study is based upon two vital names of British and Turkish theater and the political overtones observed in their works. In addition, the evolution in political philosophy from ancient Greece to the present, other ideologies that influenced (by) the political thought, political themes in British and Turkish theater are tackled with on a comparative basis. Detailed studies are made on Bernard Shaw’s and Orhan Asena’s political considerations and the implications of these thoughts on the plays. Accordingly, within five sub-sections, it is explored how the playwrights portray the time period of 1950s of British and Turkish Drama together with the sub-themes of ‘politics and inter/national identity’, the contrasting and paralleling views of Shaw and Asena, their political references, Victorianism in Britain and Republicanism in Turkey. It is attempted to reconnoitre a modern British and a Turkish playwright that represent different strands of nationalities and legacies of history, culture, and politics. It is also aimed to frame a logical periodization of politics in Modern Turkish and British Drama from its birth till the present day by focusing on leading playwrights of the periods. Key Words: George Bernard Shaw, Orhan Asena, Politics, Comparative Drama. ii ÖZET POLİTİKADA EVRİM: BERNARD SHAW ve ORHAN ASENA (KARŞILAŞTIRMALI BİR ÇALIŞMA) Önder ÇAKIRTAŞ Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi, Batı Dilleri ve Edebiyatı Bölümü Doktora Tezi, 174 sayfa, Kasım 2015 Danışman: Doç. Anahtar Sözcükler: George Bernard Shaw, Orhan Asena, Politika, Karşılaştırmalı Tiyatro. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT…. .......................................................................................................................................................ii ÖZET ………… .................................................................................................................................................... iii DEDICATION ....................................................................................................................................................... vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ....................................................................................................................................vii TABLE OF CONTENTS ...................................................................................................................................... iv CHAPTER ONE (INTRODUCTION) 1 – INTRODUCTION ........................................................................................................................................... 1 1.1. • Turkish Cinema
Turkish cinema Nezih Erdoğan Deniz Göktürk The first years Cinema, as a Western form of visual expression and entertainment, did not encounter resistance in Turkey, a country culturally and geographically bridging East and West. It perfectly represented the ambivalent attitudes of the national / cultural identity under construction. On one hand, cinema came as a sign of modernization / Westernization, not only for the images of the Westbeing projected onto the screen, but also for the condi- tions of its reception. Cinematography was a technological innovation imported from the West and the ritual of going to the movies became an important part of the modern urban experience. On the other hand, cinema offered possibilities for the production of a ‘national discourse’. Many of the early feature films reflect the ‘birth of a nation’ or resis- tance to the Allied Forces during World War I. The audience was already familiar with the apparatus (theatre, screen, figures, music and sound, light and shadow), which bore some resemblance to the traditional Turkish shadowplay Karagöz, one of the most popular entertainment forms of the past. Ayse Osmanoğlu, the daughter of Sultan Abdülhamid II, remembers that the French illusionist of the palace used to go to France once a year and return with some novelties to entertain the palace population; a film projector throwing lights and shadows on a wall was the most exciting of these spectacles. The first public exhibition took place in 1896 or 1897 in the Sponeck pub, which was frequented by non-Muslim minorities (namely Levantines), as well as Turkish intellectuals infatuated with the Western civilization in Pera (today Beyoğlu), a district in the European part of Istanbul known for its cosmopolitan character.

  • Chile's Democratic Road to Socialism
CHILE'S DEMOCRATIC ROAD TO SOCIALISM: THE RISE AND FALL OF SALVADOR ALLENDE, 1970-1973. A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History in the University of Canterbury by Richard Stuart Mann University of Canterbury 1980 ABSTRACT This thesis studies the Chilean experience of a democratic road to socialism, initiated with the election of Salvador Allende as president in 1970 and ending with his overthrow by the Chilean armed forces in 1973. The interplay of political, economic and cultural variables is considered and an effort is made to assess their relative significance concerning the failure of la via chilena. Allende's Popular Unity government was within the tradition$ of Chilean history since 1930: leftist electoral participation and popular support, respect £or the democratic system, state direction in the economy, ideological competit ion and the political attempt to resolve continuing socio- economic problems. Chile was politically sophisticated but economically underdeveloped. In a broader sense, th~ L:e.ft sought complete independence £or Chile and a genuine national identity. U.S. involvement is therefore examined as a continuing theme in perceptions 0£ Chilean history. The seeds 0£ Popular Unity's downfall were as much inherent in the contradiction between an absolute ideology and a relative political strength as in the opposition 0£ those with a vested interest in the existing system. Indeed, the Left itself was a part 0£ that system. Popular Unity went a considerable way in implementing its policies, but the question of power was not resolved as the political forces became stalemated.

  • Here All Continue to Defend Human Rights in Turkey, Despite the Increasing Difficulty and Mounting Pressure Posed by the Government
Imagine being attacked by the police for dancing in the streets for women’s rights or peacefully marching for LGBTI+ rights. Imagine being arrested for tweeting disapproval of your government; protesting to save a park; signing a peace petition. Imagine your professor being fired, or your doctor being arrested. These are all examples from Turkey’s reality. This series highlights stories of twenty individuals who have chosen to stand up for human rights. The individuals presented here all continue to defend human rights in Turkey, despite the increasing difficulty and mounting pressure posed by the government. Learn more about the everyday people taking everyday actions in Turkey to stand up for human rights. Read DEFENDING HUMAN RIGHTS IN TURKEY their stories, each one a story that needs to be heard. STORIES THAT NEED TO BE HEARD Defending Human Rights in Turkey Not long ago, Turkey was considered a success story of democratic transformation. Today human rights in Turkey are at risk. Turkey displays an increasingly restrictive environment with a distorted system of checks and balances, where the rule of law is undermined. Thousands of journalists, academics, lawyers, and government critics have been sacked, imprisoned, and charged with terror-related or libel crimes. Defending human rights doesn’t have to be a profession; it comes from a belief that all people have the right to live in peace and be treated equally. From doctors to teachers, from plumbers to journalists, everyone can defend human rights. Sustained attention and a proactive strategy by the European Union and its Member States, and the international community as a whole are needed to defend the space in which human rights defenders can continue their peaceful human rights work without risk of reprisals and unfounded litigation for their work.

  • The Miracle of Chile: Capitalism by Force How a Military Dictator and Some Unorthodox Economists Saved a Nation
The Miracle of Chile: Capitalism by Force How a military dictator and some unorthodox economists saved a nation Sean F. Brown Senior Division Historical Paper Paper Length: 2,500 words Brown 2 To find a dictatorship that made a country better off is rare. But Chile’s Augusto Pinochet did just that. His successful economic policies eventually made Chile the richest nation in South America,1 breaking ground for similar reform in China, Britain, America, and elsewhere.2 But is economic revival worth paying any price? Prelude: Marxism Arrives in Chile On September 4, 1970, Chilean voters elected the first democratic Marxist government in history.3 At the height of the Cold War, the United States in particular despised this turn of events, but despite all their efforts, the left-wing Popular Unity coalition, headed by Chilean Socialist Party nominee Salvador Allende, prevailed. CIA meddling in Chilean politics stretched back at least six years prior. To help defeat the Socialists in the 1964 presidential election, the CIA directly funded roughly half of the campaign of centrist Eduardo Frei,4 the only viable alternative, who ultimately won with 56% of the vote.5 Over the next five years the CIA would spend another $2 million on covert political action designed to strengthen anti-Marxist groups. The CIA’s efforts between 1964 and 1969 were deemed “relatively successful”, but at the same time, “persistent allegations that the… parties of the center and right were linked to the CIA may have played a part in undercutting popular support for them.”6 1 Oishimaya Sen Nag, "The Richest Countries In South America," WorldAtlas, September 28, 2017, 1, accessed February 04, 2018, https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-richest-countries-in-south-america.html.
