Turkish Cinema
Turkish cinema Nezih Erdoğan Deniz Göktürk The first years Cinema, as a Western form of visual expression and entertainment, did not encounter resistance in Turkey, a country culturally and geographically bridging East and West. It perfectly represented the ambivalent attitudes of the national / cultural identity under construction. On one hand, cinema came as a sign of modernization / Westernization, not only for the images of the Westbeing projected onto the screen, but also for the condi- tions of its reception. Cinematography was a technological innovation imported from the West and the ritual of going to the movies became an important part of the modern urban experience. On the other hand, cinema offered possibilities for the production of a ‘national discourse’. Many of the early feature films reflect the ‘birth of a nation’ or resis- tance to the Allied Forces during World War I. The audience was already familiar with the apparatus (theatre, screen, figures, music and sound, light and shadow), which bore some resemblance to the traditional Turkish shadowplay Karagöz, one of the most popular entertainment forms of the past. Ayse Osmanoğlu, the daughter of Sultan Abdülhamid II, remembers that the French illusionist of the palace used to go to France once a year and return with some novelties to entertain the palace population; a film projector throwing lights and shadows on a wall was the most exciting of these spectacles. The first public exhibition took place in 1896 or 1897 in the Sponeck pub, which was frequented by non-Muslim minorities (namely Levantines), as well as Turkish intellectuals infatuated with the Western civilization in Pera (today Beyoğlu), a district in the European part of Istanbul known for its cosmopolitan character. -

A Utopian Journey in Turkish: from Non-Translation to Retranslation Ceyda Elgül Boğaziçi University 2011
A UTOPIAN JOURNEY IN TURKISH: FROM NON-TRANSLATION TO RETRANSLATION CEYDA ELGÜL BOĞAZİÇİ UNIVERSITY 2011 A UTOPIAN JOURNEY IN TURKISH: FROM NON-TRANSLATION TO RETRANSLATION Thesis submitted to the Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation by Ceyda Elgül Boğaziçi University 2011 Thesis Abstract Ceyda Elgül, “A Utopian Journey in Turkish: From Non-Translation to Retranslation” This study explores the role of translation in the evolution of new contexts for foreign works. It classifies non-translation, initial translation and retranslation as the three existential forms in which translation appears and proposes that each of these forms attributes the foreign work a different translational context. Benefiting from the favorable grounds provided by the journey of Thomas More’s Utopia in the Turkish literary system, this diachronic study embraces the pre- and post-translation periods synchronously with the period in which the translation first appeared. The study firstly investigates Utopia in the Turkish literary system as a work that appeared in the form of non-translation in the period between the Tanzimat and 1964 and questions what type of a culture repertoire this non-translation contributed to. Then, it focuses on the initial translation and seeks a position for this first translation in the context of the 1960s, referring to the social dynamics of the period in which the translation first appeared after a long phase of resistance. Here, the study touches on the agency factor and explores the historical significance of the first translation in relation to the external factors that concern the agents of the translation. -

İ.Ü. Çeviribilim Dergisi, Sayı: 6 (2-2012) s. 103-133 I.U. Journal of Translation Studies, Issue: 6 (2-2012) p. 103-133 103 TURKISH LITERATURE IN JAPANESE Oğuz BAYKARA* Abstract This article gives an account of Turkish works translated into Japanese between 1925 and 2012. It is also an attempt to provide some answers, especially to the question concerning the reasons of the lack of interest for Turkish literature in Japan. The first part of this article sets out the theo- retical framework. The second part outlines the literary exchange between Japan and Turkey. The third part presents the data collected regarding the published Turkish literature in Japanese by surveying the authors, publishers, translators and translated works as well as scrutinizing the translation activity and the forces that triggered it. The final part evaluates the position of the translated Turkish literature in the Japanese polysystem, based on the data obtained from this research. Key Words: Polysystem Theory, Turkish Literature in Japanese, literary exchanges and relations, central/marginal positions. -

Prof. Dr. Etienne Eugene Christian Charriere July 2019 This thesis focuses on, monolingualist paradigm, World Literature system and translation as its main tool. While Turkish and Kurdish, Turkish Literature and Kurdish literature provide a fruitful contest area to these concepts, both opens a path to interrogate the borders of monolingual paradigm and the center-periphery dynamics of World Literature. In Kurdish case, it both continues its existence within Turkish and by articulating the World Literature orbit, it aims to construct its own literary space upon that. The novels of Ayhan Geçgin and Mehtap Ceyran, who write in Turkish although their mother tongue is Kurdish, provide to follow the traces of Kurdish which embodied in Turkish. On the other hand, Kurdish with two-sided translation aims to create its own literary space. The first axis of this literary production occurs as a projection of monolingual paradigm. -
