Controversial during his day, he is sometimes considered an "enfant terrible"[2] and one of the most immoral characters in German learning.[5] Contents Life Works Notes References Life Karl Friedrich Bahrdt. Bahrdt was born on August 25, 1741, at Bischofswerda, Upper Lusatia,[2] where his father was pastor of the local church.[1] The elder Bahrdt was later a professor,[1] canon, and general superintendent at Leipzig.[6] He received his early education at the celebrated school of Pforta,[1] but some commenters have found his training to have been grossly neglected.[6] At sixteen,[6] he enrolled in the University of Leipzig, where he studied under the mystic Christian August Crusius,[1] who was then head of the theological faculty. The boy varied the monotony of his studies by pranks which revealed his unbalanced character, including an attempt to raise spirits with the aid of Dr Faust's Höllenzwang.[6] After graduation, he lectured on biblical exegesis for a time as an adjunct to his father[1] before becoming a catechist (Katechet) at the church of St Peter. He proved an eloquent and popular preacher and returned to the university as a visiting professor (professor extraordinarius) of biblical philology.[6] He published a popular book of devotions, The Christian in Solitude, but was required to resign his positions and leave the Leipzig in 1768 on account of his irregular conduct.[1] 1 of 4 07/16/2021, 05:01 Karl Friedrich Bahrdt - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Friedrich_Bahrdt Christian Adolph Klotz was then able to secure him the chair in biblical antiquities at the University of Erfurt. As the post was unpaid and Bahrdt was now married, he made his actual living as an inn-keeper and from private tutoring. Once he completed his doctorate of theology at Erlangen, he was able to persuade the faculty at Erfurt to appoint him professor designate of theology and began reading lectures. His orthodoxy had by this time completely vanished: Bahrdt was now an extreme rationalist and determined to popularize the position.[1] He was not dismissed on this account, however, but left Erfurt in 1771 on account of his debts[6] and the personal and professional quarrels he had become embroiled in with his colleagues.[1] He left for a post as professor of theology and preacher at the University of Giessen. His personal behavior was no less or more objectionable than elsewhere, but his publication of God's Recent Revelations in Letters and Stories (Neueste Offenbarungen Gottes in Briefen und Erzählungen) between 1773 and 1775 made plain his departure from official doctrine. The work—a "model version" of the New Testament in modern German—occasioned a memorably scornful attack on its poor taste by Goethe[6] and prompted Bahrdt to again resign his position and relocate.[1] He then served as the director of the educational institution (philanthropin) established by Carl Ulisses von Salis-Marschlins at his château at Marschlins.[1] It had languished since Martin Planta's death in 1772, but Bahrdt disliked the strict discipline maintained by Von Salis, resigned in 1777, and prompted the closing of the school.[6] Bahrdt next served as general superintendent at Dürkheim-on-the-Hardt at the invitation of the count of Leiningen-Dagsburg.[6] He also attempted to establish a new school at Heidesheim.[1] His luckless translation of the Bible followed him, however, and a 1778 decision of the Court Council of the Empire prohibited him from holding any professorial office, lecturing in any capacity, or publishing any work on theology.[1] He again fled from his creditors and was imprisoned for a short period in Dienheim.[7] In 1779, he took refuge in Halle, now in dire poverty. When the first Norwegian immigrants entered the U.S. in the middle of the 19th century, there were not enough Lutheran pastors to minister to the spiritual needs of the people. Some of these immigrants resorted to a practice that had been used in Norway, that of using lay-preachers. This created problems because of a lack of proper theological training. The result was the teaching of false doctrine. Some thought more highly of the lay-preachers than they did of the ordained clergy. Consequently clergy were often viewed with a discerning eye and even despised. This was one of the earliest struggles within the Norwegian Synod. Further controversies involved whether the local congregation is the only form in which the church exists. Another facet of the controversy involves whether or not the ministry includes only the pastoral office; whether or not only ordained clergy do the ministry; whether teachers in the Lutheran schools are involved in the ministry; and whether or not any Christian can participate in the public ministry. Is a missionary, who serves on behalf of the entire church body, a pastor? If only the local congregation can call a pastor, then a missionary cannot be a pastor because he serves the entire church body in establishing new congregations.

    DEMISE OF GERMAN UNION HOW TO SABOTAGE A SECRET SOCIETY. THE DEMISE OF CARL FRIEDRICH BAHRDT’S GERMAN UNION IN 1789.* ANDREW MCKENZIE-MCHARG University of Cambridge ABSTRACT. In 1789 in Leipzig a slim pamphlet of 128 pages appeared that sent shock waves through the German republic of letters. The pamphlet, bearing the title Mehr Noten als Text (More Notes than Text), was an ‘exposure’ whose most sensational element was a list naming numerous members of the North German intelligentsia as initiates of a secret society. This secret society, known as the German Union, aimed to push back against anti- Enlightenment tendencies most obviously manifest in the policies promulgated under the new Prussian king Frederick William II. The German Union was the brainchild of the notorious theologian Carl Friedrich Bahrdt (1741-1792). But who was responsible for the ‘exposure’? Using material culled from several archives, this article pieces together for the first time the back story to Mehr Noten als Text and in doing so uncovers a surprisingly heterogeneous network of Freemasons, publishers and state officials. The findings prompt us to reconsider general questions about the relationship of state and society in the late Enlightenment, the interplay of the public and the arcane spheres and the status of religious heterodoxy at this time. Geography and Enlightenment in the German states, c.1690 – c.1815 Luise Fischer Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2014 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the science of geography in the German states during the ‘long’ eighteenth century, c.1690 – c.1815. It speaks to recent scholarly debates in historical geography, the history of science, book history, and Enlightenment studies. The thesis investigates the forms taken by eighteenth-century German geography, its meanings, and practices. This is of particular interest, since this topic is understudied. The thesis is based upon an analysis of geographical print (books and periodicals) and manuscript correspondence. The thesis proposes that geography’s definition was understood as ‘description of the earth’. The interpretative meaning of this definition, geography’s purpose in print, and its educational practice (content and methods) were, in contrast, debated.
