Portuguese Catalogue 2016 FREE PORTUGUESE Dictionaries, coursebooks, self-study, grammars, readers and more 2016 CATALOGUE About Grant & Cutler at Foyles Grant & Cutler was established in 1936 and merged with Foyles in March 2011. Award-winning bookseller Foyles started in 1903 and has the largest range of books in the UK with more than 200,000 titles. The merged language departments now carry a very wide range of foreign-language material, together with a large section on English as a Foreign Language. We specialise in the major Western European languages as well as Polish and Russian, but pride ourselves on covering all living languages from Afrikaans to Zulu. In June 2014, Foyles moved into an exciting, new flagship store at 107 Charing Cross Road, two doors down from its previous location, and Foreign Languages are on Level 4. Opening hours are: Monday - Saturday 9.30-21.00 Sunday 11.30-18.00 Public holidays (not Easter Sunday or Christmas Day) 11.00-20.00 Prices Prices are shown in British pounds and are correct at the time of cataloguing. However, because of exchange rate fluctuations and publishers’ increases, they are subject to change without notice. Website prices are updated overnight and provide a more accurate check on current prices. Tax (VAT) is charged only on non-book material, and only on deliveries within the UK, or to customers in other EU countries who are not registered for VAT. Discounts and delivery Postage is free on all UK orders over £10. Schools, libraries and other institutions will receive free UK postage on all orders and a discount on larger orders. Full delivery rates can be found on our website. To qualify for a discount, orders must be received as a single item; discounts are not cumulative. Orders for software site licences, and magazine and newspaper subscriptions are not eligible for discounts. We welcome personal visits and teachers and librarians with appropriate authorisation can ask for books to be invoiced to their school account.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding.

The first section of the paper outlines the three different stages of Portuguese-Japanese language contact. The second section will discuss the etymology of one of the loanwords which presumably entered Portuguese lexicon from Japanese in the first stage of Portuguese- Japanese language contact, namely, bonzo, which has traditionally provoked some controversy as to its etymon. As we will see in the discussion of the third stage of Portuguese-Japanese language contact, it is rather straightforward to settle the problem of etymon in recent borrowing. INTRODUCTION A pidgin is an emergency language, created to facilitate communication between groups of different languages and cultures when they get in contact and establish some relationship. When children are born within a pidgin-speaker community and have this language as a mother tongue, then we have a creole language conception. Studies on pidgin and creole languages date from before the nineteenth century; however, as an academic discipline it was not established until the 1950s and early 1960s. The late establishment of pidgins and creoles as a legitimate field of study is due to the fact that many linguists used to consider it as an auxiliary language, used only in situations of emergency (Holm, 1988: 3) and they did not take this subject seriously.

The instructional goal of the website is to offer practice tools that learners, ranging from adolescents to adults, from beginning to advanced proficiency levels, can use as self-study or in conjunction with courses in Portuguese to improve mastery of the major skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. When the allusion is viewed in that sense, it has direct relevance to my topic. My title is borrowed from the famous jazz piece written and often performed by Thelonious Monk, the iconic jazz composer and pianist who brought great influence to the music, beginning in the early 1940’s and continuing until his death in 1982.
