1 “Finally the Academies”: Networking communities of knowledge in Italy and beyond Lisa Sampson University College London [NOTE: This is a copy of the final version of the essay (27 Sept. 2019) accepted by Chicago University Press for publication in I Tatti Studies in the Italian Renaissance, issue Fall 2019. Any references should be made to the final printed/online formatted version.] For Giambattista Vico in his Principi di una scienza nuova, academies represented the culmination of human civilization.1 His view has not always been shared, but especially since the new millennium, academies have attracted growing international scholarly interest as cultural and socio-political hubs central to forming knowledge across all disciplines of the arts and sciences. Their study as a scholarly field in their own right was given new impetus around 1980 by Amedeo Quondam, Claudia Di Filippo Bareggi, Laetitia Boehm, Ezio Raimondi, and Gino Benzoni, and in the Anglosphere by Frances Yates and Eric Cochrane. This coincided with a growing socio-historical interest in associative and relational culture, setting aside Burckhardtian concerns for the individual. More recently, the field has diversified considerably to include interest in cultural mobilities and transnational networks, while the availability of digital resources offers new research possibilities. The groundwork for studying these rather loosely defined institutions which proliferated in the Italian peninsula and beyond from around the turn of the sixteenth century, 2 was first laid out with Michele Maylender’s multi-volume compendium Storia delle accademie d’Italia (published posthumously 1926-30). This documents over 2,000 academies of varying constitutions formed at various dates, but mostly between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. -

Pico, Plato, and Albert the Great: The Testimony and Evaluation of Agostino Nifo EDWARD P. MAHONEY Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494) is without doubt one of the most intriguing figures of the Italian Renaissance. It is thus no surprise that he has attracted the attention of many modern scholars. By reason of the varied interests that are reflected in his writings, contrasting interpretations of Pico have been proposed.1 Our purpose here is not to present a new and different picture of Pico but, rather, to offer a contribution to one fruitful area of research pursued by some recent historians of philosophy, namely, Pico's debt to, and 1. INTRODUCTION Agostino Nifo was a prolific writer. During his lifetime, thirty-five works were published, and after his death another five came out. His books appeared in more than one hundred and sixty editions, from to , at Venice, Pavia, Lyon, Paris, Naples, Florence, Augsburg, Bologna, Rome,Leiden,Basel,Marburg,Troyes,Rouen,Parma,andGenoa.1 In , Nifo published De intellectu,themajorworkofhisearly career, touching on questions of philosophical psychology. Based on a detailed assessment of the views of his predecessors, Nifo in this work presented an analysis of the main issues of Peripatetic noetics, namely origin and immortality of the intellect or rational soul, its relation to the body, its unity and parts, the speculative intellect, and intellectual beatitude. Although the bulk of the work was presumably composed in the early s at Padua, there is good evidence that it was completed and drastically reorientated before publication. This introduction offers a cursory view of Peripatetic noetics and the doctrinal context of Nifo’s work, as well as a short analysis of his shift toward anti-Averroism. It also dwells on Nifo’s use of philosophical and other sources, and on the issue of the ‘lost’ works of Siger of Brabant quoted in De intellectu. Subsequently, the general structure of the work, i.e. its main themes and issues, recurring argumentative strategies, and the fortune of the work are discussed. Finally, I present a note on the transcription of this text and on the works quoted or cited by Nifo. The Introduction is followed by an extensive analytical summary ofthe contents of the work. -

and Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. 15 Borromeo would later open his own Academy in Milan, in addition to a picture gallery with works donated from the Cardinal’s own collection. 16 Del Monte (1549-1626), too, seems to have had direct contact with Neri and the Oratorians. In his seminal two-volume study on the cardinal, Zygmunt Wa źbi ński suggested that Del Monte was introduced to the Oratorian circle shortly after his arrival in Rome by Cardinal Ferdinando de’ Medici. 17 This proposal is likely, but Del Monte would have other opportunities to meet and form a relationship with the Oratorians through colleagues and associates already linked with the Oratorian founder and his brethren. Del Monte was not only closely linked to Paleotti, but also Cardinal Federico Borromeo, and the Oratorian-Cardinals Baronio and Tarugi. Cardinal Agostino Valier (1531-1606) was a close friend of both Carlo and Federico Borromeo. He was a member of Carlo’s Accademia delle Notti Vaticane in Rome, and would later write the saint’s biography, Vita e morte di S. Borromeo’s Accademia del Disegno, Milan was officially founded in 1620, and the Pinacoteca two years earlier.
