Ta Matia ,June 2003 www.goyanz.org.nz G.O.Y.A.N.Z. Greek Orthodox Youth Association of New Zealand www.goyanz.org.nz Issue No. 18 June/July 2003 MISS GOYANZ 2003 Saturday 31 May 2003 IN THIS ISSUE Page 3 - Spyro Serepisos Mr GOYANZ 2003 , Spiros Kasoulides is interviewd by MC Chrisanthi Kamberiogiannis Page 4 - The Olympic Torch Page 5 - Golden Kitchen Jim Christie presents Miss GOYANZ 2003, Meropi Kafakis, with 1st prize The younger brigade had a good time too The annual GOYANZ dance took place on Saturday 31st of May, with a crowd of about 350 people. Even though the large numbers made the seating quite ‘intimate’, it was great to see so many people supporting this annual event, especially young ones. The Melbourne band Kerasma provided Greek entertainment until the early hours of the morning, and faced no difficulty in getting the kefi going, with people filling the Page 7 - Eksodos of Messologi dancefloor from pretty much the start of the night. As every year there was plenty of food, an auction and a raffle. Apart from the usual crowning of Miss GOYANZ, the selection of Mr GOYANZ was a definite surprise and, judging from the crowd reactions, a welcome addition to the usual tradition. Unfortunately he didn’t get a crown though! Jim Christie of Harvey World Travel very generously donated travel vouchers for Miss GOYANZ for the last time, as he will be retiring soon. Vera Georgiou also donated 1st prize for Mr GOYANZ, a trip to Aussie. Page 10 - Greek Festival Congratulations to the winners and runners-up, and many thanks to everyone who helped with the dance preparations (especially the GOYANZ committee) and also to the sponsors of the event. Hopefully next year will be just as successful! GOYANZ Clubroom opening Sunday 20th April 2003 Over 150 people attended the Page 13 - Greek School GOYANZ clubroom open day at 75 Adelaide Rd. The clubroom refurbishment was the cumulation of several months effort between GOYANZ and the Apollon Inc. New facilities now include upgraded toilets, Page 20 - Soccer bar area, coffee machine, pool table, audio visual equipment, games, cafe style seating and modern decor. TOMASZ FRASZCZYK Greeklish – on the Influence of New Communication Technologies and New Media on the Development of Contemporary Greek KEY WORDS Greeklish, Greece, language, writing, media ABSTRACT The growing importance of English in the Western cultural circle is also an issue in the countries of the Mediterranean Sea. Research in the region shows that with the increasing popularity of electronic communication, especially with the use of SMS, the development of new media and the market offensive of social media like Facebook and Twitter, Greek is influenced not only by English, but also by Latinization, a process which has been termed Greeklish. The article presents a short history of Greek, as an introduction to its current development in the context of Greeklish. Its characteristics and origins in Greek writing are illustrated with the most representative examples from press, television and internet sites, along with typologies. The research outcome of documenting different aspects of using Greeklish have been discussed, as well as the most important issues in discussions taking place in Greece on possible consequences of this phenomenon on the development of Greek. The growing importance of English in countries of the Western culture is a phenomenon, which has also influenced the region of the Mediterranean Sea, among it Greece and Cyprus. The Anglicisation of the Greek language, but also of Polish, takes place by including English words in common, everyday use (e.g. weekend, lunch), structural borrowings1 or giving proper names in English (e.g. “Sea Towers” in Gdynia or “Wiśniowy Business Park” in Warsaw), and is only a certain element of the transformation process of contemporary Greek.

  • Kiosk Wars/CD Review
December 1, 2010 Hi John- Here are the CD reviews for the Januaary 2011 issue. I'll be by your office later today to give you the CD covers for scanning. Sending file as back up. Talk soon, Perri Kiosk Wars: The Big Guns Battle for Minimarket Shelf Space Perri Pagonis [email protected] The music industry has gone through such dramatic changes in the past twenty years, that it’s hard to keep track of what’s happening with the record companies at any given moment. Vinyl records, although widely accepted by audiophiles as the most satisfying way to hear recorded music, is for collectors and DJs only. CDs are still the storage medium being most widely manufactured and distributed, however, they are becoming more technologically passé on a daily basis. Downloading digital music off of the Internet in MP3 and other forms is the current youth rage, but kids seem to download scads of stuff on a whim, often times an artist’s entire oeuvre in one fell swoop, and then forget to listen to it. The MySpace phenomenon on the web has made any band’s music, I mean any band’s music, from Micronesian punk rock goofball stuff to selected arias from monumental Italian opera stars, available to download into your computer’s hard disk in seconds. As the age of global stadium stars has dwindled down to a mere handful of selected acts: Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, AC/DC, Metallica etc, so too has the Greek music scene splintered into a few revered giants and hordes of mewling newbies.

  • (Greek) 'Woman': Some Current Predicates
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE The category (Greek) ‘woman’: Some current predicates Marianthi Makri-Tsilipakou Aristotle University of Thessaloniki [email protected] Abstract Σhis study applies the concept of Membership Categorization Device (MCD), as proposed by Sacks (1992), to the study of authentic data culled from a variety of contexts. It looks for category-bound activities and other related predicates, such as rights, entitlements, obligations, knowledge, attributes and competencies that the (female) incumbents invoke themselves or are imputed to them by other members. The aim is to, hopefully, offer a view on the current categorization of (Greek) femininity, and detect any changes that might have occurred in actual interaction, against the purportedly prevailing gender norms. Keywords: MCDs, category-boundedness, accountability, gender, politics, relationships, care-taking 1. Membership categorization In his lectures, Harvey Sacks (1992a, 1992b) attempted to capture common sense, or culture, as displayed in the methodic use of categories to describe kinds of persons, some of which can be used and heard as “going together”. In the classic example “The baby cried. The mommy picked it up” (Sacks 1992a: 236), we get to hear that the mommy who picks up the baby is the mommy of the baby (although there is no genitive such as its mummy picked it up or variants thereof). And we also get to hear that the picking up has resulted from the baby‟s crying. In other words, we get to see the two categories, „baby‟ and „mommy‟, interactionally linked as members of family, which is a collection of categories or a device.

President Jean-Claude Juncker Wednesday, 29 June 2016 European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 1049 Brussels Belgium Re. Securing a sustainable future for the European music sector Dear President Juncker, As recording artists and songwriters from across Europe and artists who regularly perform in Europe, we believe passionately in the value of music. Music is fundamental to Europe’s culture. It enriches people’s lives and contributes significantly to our economies. This is a pivotal moment for music. Consumption is exploding. Fans are listening to more music than ever before. Consumers have unprecedented opportunities to access the music they love, whenever and wherever they want to do so. But the future is jeopardised by a substantial “value gap” caused by user upload services such as Google’s YouTube that are unfairly siphoning value away from the music community and its artists and songwriters. This situation is not just harming today’s recording artists and songwriters. It threatens the survival of the next generation of creators too, and the viability and the diversity of their work. The value gap undermines the rights and revenues of those who create, invest in and own music, and distorts the market place. This is because, while music consumption is at record highs, user upload services are misusing “safe harbour” exemptions. These protections were put in place two decades ago to help develop nascent digital start-ups, but today are being misapplied to corporations that distribute and monetise our works. Right now there is a unique opportunity for Europe’s leaders to address the value gap.
