Jim Christie presents Miss GOYANZ 2003, Meropi Kafakis, with 1st prize The younger brigade had a good time too The annual GOYANZ dance took place on Saturday 31st of May, with a crowd of about 350 people. Even though the large numbers made the seating quite ‘intimate’, it was great to see so many people supporting this annual event, especially young ones. The Melbourne band Kerasma provided Greek entertainment until the early hours of the morning, and faced no difficulty in getting the kefi going, with people filling the Page 7 - Eksodos of Messologi dancefloor from pretty much the start of the night. As every year there was plenty of food, an auction and a raffle. Apart from the usual crowning of Miss GOYANZ, the selection of Mr GOYANZ was a definite surprise and, judging from the crowd reactions, a welcome addition to the usual tradition. Unfortunately he didn’t get a crown though! Jim Christie of Harvey World Travel very generously donated travel vouchers for Miss GOYANZ for the last time, as he will be retiring soon. Vera Georgiou also donated 1st prize for Mr GOYANZ, a trip to Aussie. Page 10 - Greek Festival Congratulations to the winners and runners-up, and many thanks to everyone who helped with the dance preparations (especially the GOYANZ committee) and also to the sponsors of the event. Hopefully next year will be just as successful!

Eksodos of Messologi. by Steve Samaras

I would like to start by saying thank you that you could be here with us, to celebrate this special day, the Eksodo of Messologi. As we all know, Messologi played a big part in the Greek Arising. Two main points that I will cover will clearly prove this. My points dates back to 1822, where the Turks tried to invade and take over Messologi, but they were not successful. The forcefulness of the Turks didn’t just stop there and 4 years later, the citizens of Messologi had to withstand the attack of the Turks for the second time, in the invasion of the district. This time Messologi fell into the enemy’s hands, even though, the Greeks never gave up and on the 10 of April 1826, they decided to do the Eksodo of Messologi. Their plans didn’t go as predicted though. A fellow Greek patriot informed the enemy regarding the Eksodo that was going to take place and everything turned to tragedy. The decision for freedom was already made. The fuse was painted red from the blood of the Greek warriors who gave their lives for their country. Not only men, but also women and young children preferred to take their lives, than become slaves to the Turks. Only because of our ancestors, Messologi became free from the Turks in 1829 and the city began to repopulate again. At 1839 the first mayor was voted and at 1937 the Greek government voted to name the city of Messologi, ‘Sacred Town’. Messologi. As the poet and academic Nickeforos Vretakos said, Messologi may have fallen into the hands of the enemy, but the town’s ‘Everyone from around the nation must fervently and wholeheartedly history is held alive in the hearts of every free Greek person and this is congregate around Messologi with faith.’ the reason why we are here today. For Mesologi is a universal symbol of the struggle of nations for dignity Every year on the Sunday of Lazarus and Palm Sunday, Messologi and and freedom. And we are here today to commemorate this important the whole nation honors the big sacrifice of the heroic Exodos of event in out history.

Every year at the GOYANZ dance the selection of Miss GOYANZ takes place. This year’s dance was no exception, but it did have the added twist of a Mr GOYANZ being chosen too. As one of the people selected, to say I was surprised is an understatement! In fact, I think that all of the young men and women chosen were taken by surprise. Sometimes in the past those nominated have been asked for their consent beforehand, and this issue has been hotly contested. The tradition of choosing Miss GOYANZ is one that has been going on for years, but the truth is that many people’s ideas concerning beauty and its importance have undergone changes since then. While it is impossible to deny the power external beauty still holds in our society, it would be a good idea to emphasise and publicise the fact that selection should not necessarily be based on looks, but rather L-R: Miss GOYANZ 2002 Anna Lillis, 1st runner up Katerina Economou, Miss GOYANZ 2003 Meropi Kafakis, Harvey World Travel Sponsor Jim Christie on personality (admittedly still a subjective criterion) and the individual’s involvement in the Greek community. On a more radical note, maybe some sort of GOYANZ award for commitment to assisting with community projects and events would be a positive change, as such an award would officially mark the shift away from the criterion of appearance towards that of achievement. No other Greek community is further away from Greece than our one, and the number of people involved in helping out is limited. We donít need pretty boys and girls as much as we need people willing to help our community survive and hopefully become stronger as well. Many agree that if the Miss GOYANZ / Mr GOYANZ tradition does L-R: Sarandis Tsirtsidis, Stan Nikitopoulos, Peter Zivadinovic, George Serepisos, Jimmy Kandiliotis (standing), Laki Kalantzis continue, those chosen should be encouraged to lead the way in achieving these aims. The GOYANZ committee is open to suggestions, so if you have any sort of ideas concerning this tradition or the way things are run in general, speak up or forever hold your peace. All too often we comment on issues within our circle of family and friends, criticising those who put a lot of effort into working for our community, but avoid voicing our opinion more openly and constructively, or taking action ourselves. The members of the committee have been working hard for all of us, and they deserve our input and appreciation.

9 www.goyanz.org.nz GREEK COMMUNITY FOOD FESTIVAL Overseas Terminal, 22nd March 2003

As we all know food is an intricate and vital part of our Greek lifestyle for it is a means through which we celebrate life and bond with our friends and family, even strangers. This was reinforced once again on Saturday the 22nd of March with our annual Greek Food Festival. The Greek community each year dedicates a week (around the 25th of March) for us to celebrate our ‘greekhood’ by organising a series of events and activities which aim to bring us closer to our roots and introduce others to our culture. The setting was at the Overseas Terminal and all those who came to support this significant event in our Greek Community would have to admit that the atmosphere and environment carried most of us The Greek Communty dance Group performs Tsamiko for the “englaszi” back to our homeland Greece. The weather was perfect as the temperature reached the mid-twenties with the absence of the Wellingtonian winds. This in combination with the image of all the cheerful people gathered near the waterfront could easily have been paralleled to a setting on the Greek Islands. All the sullogoi (Koinothta, Makedones, GOYANZ, AHEPA, Arkarnanoi, Mutilhnioi, Filoptwxos, Krhtikoi ,Kupraioi etc) came together and filled all the benches with the most delicious and delectable food items. People were able to taste and savour a variety of food made by the finest Greek cooks in Wellington that cook and learning the ropes home cooking going cheap cater for so many of the Greek families in Wellington. There were paradosiaka gluka, pites, souvlakia, traditional Greek dishes like ntolmadakia and mousaka. Greek coffee was served which completed the Greek atmosphere. Even the GOYANZ committee had their own stand, which proved to be very busy and kept all the members out of mischief! At the front, on the counter and making the pites were the beautiful Greek goddesses Vera Georgiou, Eleni Neonakis and Penelope Makris while the men were at the back sweltering over the barbecue, cooking the mutitaioi/souzoukakia for the pites. However, there were also stands with raffles were the men in charge the goyanz committee and friends on the job would shout out at various points ‘We have a winner’ adding excitement and laughter to the festival. On a more serious note there were other stalls which had a more informative purpose such as the stand concerning the Olympic games and The Return of the Parthenon Marbles. However, a Greek event would not be complete if there was no dancing and that was also the highlight of the Greek Food Festival! The group of dancers dressed in traditional customs came out at 12:10 pm and showed off their flair and ‘figoures’ to the crowd, which eagerly waited waiting for the first sale and the winner is number 69!

KERASMA BAND AFTERMATH PARTY GOYANZ CLUBROOMS, 75 ADELAIDE RD, SUNDAY 1 JUNE 2003

‘KEFI KEFI KEFI‘ are three words that come to mind when thinking tuned into the Greek Youth radio show on Sunday of Queen’s Birthday about Queen’s Birthday weekend. Whoever actually thought that the you would have heard that ‘Kerasma’ is probably the youngest Greek GOYANZ annual dance on the Saturday evening would have drained band in Australia that plays traditional music as well as the more modern the Greek population of Wellington was sadly mistaken, as was explicitly songs. The Australian band started playing around 9 o’clock and Elena shown in the aftermath party on the Sunday night (1st of June). and Byron’s (the two lead singers) voices made many of the crowd Because the dance on Saturday was such a success it was inevitable quickly get up and fill the dance floor from early on. There was never that there had to be a repeat especially since the members of the band a moment when the dance floor was empty. Everyone was up there were not leaving until Monday or Tuesday morning. Therefore the dancing their feet off to kalamatiana, tzamika, tsiftetelia and zembekika, GOYANZ committee magically, in a minimum amount of time, both modern and traditional versions. The climax of the baraki event organised a party night at the GOYANZ clubrooms on Adelaide Rd. was when George, the bouzouki player of the band, got up on the bar Despite short notice, many people started filtering the clubrooms at accompanied with several other enthusiastic Greeks! 8:30 in order to be injected with another night of Greek music and All those at the aftermath party would have to agree with me that it ‘glentií”. seemed that everyone was full of energy and no one was willing to go Even though this event was on a more intimate scale the atmosphere anywhere. It even reached the point where the crowd didn’t want the was just as, if not more lively than that of the previous night. The band to stop. However because many of the band members had to band ‘Kerasma’, that came from Melbourne, were having a ball and depart early the next morning on a twilight flight back to Melbourne, so were those that joined them by drinking, eating and dancing. the night had to come to an end. The evening was a huge success and ‘Kerasma’ is a very talented band and consists of very young members, everyone left from the party with a smile on their face and memories the youngest of which are in their early 20s (George and Nick). Dear “Jimmy the Mystery Greek”, you have to get more involved in communtiy affairs. The Game of Soccer by Black Fox Olympic JUNIORS 2003 Well, before I start with the laws on the game of soccer, I would like to congratulate the Capital Soccer Youth League who won the 2003 National Youth League Championship. The home based team had won 5 of the 7 games played and the other 2 games were draws. The Laws of the game. As I stated on my first article, I will be explaining some of the Laws of the Game of Soccer. A lot of players don’t have a clue about the laws. They think they know the rules, especially LAW 11, Offside and LAW 12, Fouls and Misconduct. Those two rules we will get into a lot and explain in detail, in a later issue. For this issue of Ta Matia tou Kosmou, Ill start from Law 9, even though laws 1-8 are important, I’m going to talk about the laws that apply when on the field. Well lets start. LAW 9, The Ball In and Out of Play: The ball is out of play, when the ball has wholly crossed over the line. The ball is In play, when the ball rebounds of the corner flags, the goalpost or crossbar. It is still in play if it rebounds off the referee or the assistant referee. LAW 10, The Method of Scoring: A goal is scored when the ball has wholly crossed over the line. Not 3 quarters over, not half over. But the whole ball. 9th grade Artemis: L-R back: Rachel Rogers, Andrew Antonopoulos (coach), Jasmine Serepisos, Elishia Baker, Sophie Pantazis-Lloyd, Ifigenia Kandiliotis. LAW 11, Offside: It is not an offence to be in an offside position. In other Front: Sophia Antonopoulos, Alexia Antonopoulos, Chanelle Cordalis, words even though someone is offside, if he isn’t in the zone of play, then Natalia Carras. what’s the point of calling it offside! A player is not offside from a throw- in, goal kick or corner kick Scenario (1). The player on the left wing is in a offside position. The play is on the right side of the field, the ball is played forward to right wing. Yes the player on the far side is offside, but he is not in the active play zone. If the ball was to have been played forward towards the middle of the field, then the player on the left side, would be offside, as he would be in the active play zone Scenario (2) A shot on goal has taken place from the middle of the 18-yard box. The right wing attacker is in an offside position when the ball was kicked, but cause the shot was on goal, the right wing attacker is not offside. If the ball was to have hit the goalpost and rebounded back on the field and the right wing attacker was to get the ball, he then is offside, as he was offside when the ball was first kicked and he is gaining advantage by being in that position. If you would like more scenarios on offside, or have any questions on offsideís, let me know. Next issue I will be talking about Law 12, Fouls and Misconduct. Late April I attended a friendly game, as an official, between Miramar Rangers and West’s. The West’s dominated the game from the start. They played the offside rule perfectly, you couldn’t have faulted them. One thing I will never understand is why do players stop and scream their 9th grade Kratos: L-R back: John Serepisos (coach), Vasilios Tsirtsidis, Andrew lungs out, trying to tell the assistant that an offside has accurred. And the Graeme, Tas Misirlakis, Guy Hilliard, Timmy Rowe. Front: Harrison Roberts-Grey, Luke Ferry, Johnathon Kotrotsos, Evangelina thing is that they can clearly see the assistant, who is still running down telfar, Thomas Serepisos the line. This means that NO offence has taken place. Keep going till the Referee blows the whistle. Do you think cause you stopped that the rest of the players will also? Scream as much as you want, but keep running. You think it’s an offside cause the attacker is in front of you, and you are correct, but you forgot something, you donít have eyes behind your head and a player from your own team is playing him on-side. Look before you start abusing referees or assistants. Unlike myself, a lot of Referees out there don’t have the tolerance to handle a lot of abuse from players. How do I handle it? If the teams are known for their abuse towards referees, I will let them know prior to going on the field, that any talk back to my assistants, or myself and I mean “any talk back”, will result them being disciplined. If you have something to share about soccer, or have a query about a decision that a referee made or any questions based on soccer, write to: The Game of Soccer, c/o Ta Matia Tou Kosmou, PO Box 6257, Wellington or go to our web site at www.goyanz.org.nz

Please make sure you give a detailed outlay of what you think happened 11th grade Kronos: L-R Back Row: Robert Liu, Michael Zivadinovic, and the position of the referee at the time of the incident, if you remember. Johnathan Emsley, William Kong, George babarouses, Spyro Serepisos, Robert Liu, Stephen Hazlewood, Zoe Pantazis-Lloyd, Peter Zivadinovic (coach) Till the next issue of Matia tou Kosmou Play Hard, Play Fair Front: Peter Babarouses, Stratos Efstratiou, Johnny Efstratiou, Petros Kamberiogiannis, Nicolaos Karapanos
