SOCIETY NEWS From the Editor’s Desk It seems that no sooner have we finished preparing for one AGM that another one is in the planning. This year’s event at Peco was most successful in so many ways, with an excellent display of locomotives, fascinating trips, beautiful scenery, and an admirable consumption of the local ale. I understand that 4 barrels of beer were emptied and such was the fun and welcome of the party that even the head gardener joined in. Full reports are contained within these pages, and a synopsis of the formal AGM meeting is reported on the website. We now start the planning and look forward to the next AGM which will be hosted by the Burnley & Pendle Miniature Railway Society over the weekend of 22nd to 24th September next year. I am pleased to see a couple of references to enthusiasts from outside the UK in the form of Chris Baker’s award, and a short piece regarding a railway in Mallorca (a longer article will appear in the next News). I know interest in our gauge is worldwide and I hope we can feature more such reports in the future – perhaps something from Brittany next? Incidentally, I have heard a rumour that a get-together of articulated locos is on the cards for September 2018 and I hope to have more information in the next issue. In the meantime, don’t stop steaming over the winter period, and for members who live in the more northerly regions, you’d better get cracking with completing your snow plough attachments. AGM. 4 Email: [email protected] SOCIETY NEWS Society Stand at the Midlands Exhibition 2016 We were at the Midlands Exhibition once again - the photograph shows our stand with our Chairman with a foot in both Northern Association and 7¼” Gauge territory. Among the exhibits were:- 7¼” 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 Garratt. This is a model of the Darjeeling Himalayan Garratt which was built for that railway, but only ran for a short time early in the last century. It has 4 high pressure cylinders and this model is being built by Dennis Billington from Northampton. 7¼” Tich (a doubled up LBSC Tich) owned by Bernard Manning of Spilsby in Lincolnshire. It was built by Stan Bradshaw who lived in the Kings Lynn area.     Toy Trains, and Model Railways The Clockwork Era, 1952-55 The genesis of a lifetime’s hobby was, as usual at that time, a Hornby ‘O’ gauge clockwork train set, purchased probably for my birthday in 1952, or at Xmas later that year. This comprised a dark red 0-4-0 tank locomotive and two 4-wheeled carriages, running on jointed tinplate track which I took great pleasure in routing sinuously around the table and chairs, on the floor of our living room at Fenton Avenue, Staines, getting under everyone’s feet. This system was expanded to include various goods wagons, a level crossing, signals, a tinplate station, a further coach, and lastly an additional engine of the same 0-4-0 type, but this time enamelled in black livery. A broken mainspring, no doubt due to over-enthusiastic winding, was a problem requiring fiddly replacement by my father. This collection was probably sold to the Atkins at no 24, who had twin boys a few years younger than me. They also had all my old ‘Dinky Toys’ which too would have been worth something these days! However they were probably very ‘well-used’ and without their boxes, so perhaps not. “OO” gauge electric trains 1956-58 The replacement for my ‘O’ gauge system came in the form of a Hornby Dublo “Royal Scot” train set. I think this cost the princely sum of 63 shillings (£3.15) at a time when the average take-home pay was around £9 per week. Nowadays a similar set would be around £120, so the relative amounts are not greatly different.

    The Steam Locomotive Table, v1 If you’re reading this; you either like steam trains, or want to know more about them. Hopefully, either way, I can scratch your itch with this; a set of randomizer/dice-roll tables of my own making; as inspired by some similar tables for tanks and aircrafts. Bear with me, I know not everyone knows the things I do, and I sure know I don’t know a lot of things other train enthusiasts do; but hopefully the descriptions and examples will be enough to get anyone through this smoothly. To begin, you’ll either want a bunch of dice or any online dice-rolling/number generating site (or just pick at your own whim); and somewhere or something to keep track of the details. These tables will give details of a presumed (roughly) standard steam locomotive. No sentinels or other engines with vertical boilers; no climax, shay, etc specially driven locomotives; are considered for this listing as they can change many of the fundamental details of an engine. Go in expecting to make the likes of mainline, branchline, dockyard, etc engines; not the likes of experiments like Bulleid’s Leader or specific industry engines like the aforementioned logging shays. Some dice rolls will have uneven distribution, such as “1-4, and 5-6”. Typically this means that the less likely detail is also one that is/was significantly less common in real life, or significantly more complex to depict. For clarity sake examples will be linked, but you’re always encouraged to look up more as you would like or feel necessary.

We are gradually building up a stock of articles, but as mentioned before, the provision of suitable illustrations for these articles is still something of a problem and I will be most pleased to hear from anyone who can offer any good, sharp, black and white pictures of any aspect of the narrow gauge. It is a great pleasure to be able to include in this issue an article from one of our Australian members while two other illustrations in this issue have come from contributors in America and East Germany. I very much hope this will be the start of a trend and I will be receiving many more contributions from those of you living overseas who have access to much material denied to us in Britain. · From the next issue I hope to use this page to comment on various aspects of the narrow gauge scene (but NOT internal Society affairs) and will always be pleased to receive your views for possible inclusion in our correspondence pages. ROBERTSON, OF LONDON. __ The circumstance that the Members of the Institution are to have the opportunity, through the courtesy of Sir Arthur Percival Heywood, Bart., of inspecting an interesting example of a very Narrow-Gauge Line of his own design, ?or which all the details, mechanical and otherwise, have been carefully thought out by its designer-and the coincidence that this meeting of the Institution is being held under the presidency of one of the leading locomotive engineers of this country-render the present a favourable opportunity for bringing before the Institution some facts in connection with this class of Light Railways. The whole subject of light railways cannot be treated within the limits of the present short paper, which is confined to narrow-gauge railways of two feet gauge and under: although the author is personally of opinion that the circumstances which would justify the adoption of a gauge under two feet must be of an exceptional character. Comparatively few engineers realise the capability of narrow-gauge railways, and the saving that can be effected by their adoption, when applied to large industrial undertakings. Several instances have come under the author's notice, where the judicious adoption of light narrow-gauge lines, such as those dealt with in this paper, has resulted in considerable financial benefit to those concerned in them. Reasons for adoption.-Narrow-gauge lines of this class may be roughly divided into two categories:-first, where the work to be done is of a permanent and constant nature, enabling the line'to be laid down as a fixture ; and second, where the work is of a temporary character.

    HMRS PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE JOHN TATCHELL COLLECTION File ADD 5 Photos ADD 501 - 525 were mostly taken from, or near to, Mortlake signalbox or the adjacent railway cottage. Most are dated June 1914. Electrification was authorised in 1913 and some conductor rail was installed by 1914. Electric operation through Mortlake, on the Waterloo - Waterloo services via Kingston and via Hounslow and the Shepperton branch, started in Jan - Feb 1916. JTL ADD500.JPG Photo taken from the vegetable plot East of the cottage. T1 0-4-4T 6 (Nine Elms 1894) leaving Mortlake on a Waterloo - Waterloo train via Hounslow and Twickenham. Train comprises a 30 ft 6-wheel passenger brake van and 48/50 ft non- corridor bogie coaches. A main line stopping train set is probably standing in for bogie block sets whilst these are being rebuilt as electric units. Conductor rails in place. JTL ADD501.JPG Photo taken from the signalbox. Drummond 700 class 0-6-0 at Mortlake station on an up special train. First coach is a 46’ 6” corridor third or composite built in 1908 for emigrant traffic.
