LADB Article Id: 057412 ISSN: 1060-4189 Chile: Overview Of Presidential Candidates by Erika Harding Category/Department: General Published: Friday, August 13, 1993 The list of presidential candidates for the December 11 general elections continues to grow. The most recent addition is Sen. Arturo Alessandri Besa, nominated in early August by a coalition of rightist parties, dubbed the "Union for the Progress of Chile." Alessandri Besa is the grandson of former Chilean president Arturo Alessandri Palma (1920-1924 and 1932-1938), and nephew of former president Jorge Alessandri Rodriguez (1958-1964). Alessandri was nominated on Aug. 8, during a convention of delegates from the National Renovation (Renovacion Nacional, RN); the National Party (Partido Nacional, PN); the Independent Democrat Union (Union Democrata Independiente, UDI); the Center Center Union (Union de Centro Centro, UCC); and the Party of the South (Partido del Sur). Alessandri himself is not formally affiliated with any political party. Alessandri's nomination came as a surprise to the RN, the largest of the country's opposition parties. The RN had been working for months to secure nomination of its own candidate, Manuel Feliu. Alessandri, meanwhile, announced his intention to seek the nomination only two weeks before the convention. In the voting, Alessandri's bid was supported by delegates of the UCC and the UDI. The UDI's candidate, Jovino Novoa, withdrew from the race during the convention. In order to formalize his candidacy, Alessandri must now complete the process of gathering 36,000 signatures from registered voters by an Aug. 13 deadline. The parties participating in the convention hoped to overcome the deep divisions which have plagued the right for the past few years. Despite the attempt to secure unity, however, the right wing will be split in the presidential race between Alessandri and Jose Pinera, labor minister during the dictatorship headed by Gen. Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). Pinera proclaimed himself an independent candidate for the presidency earlier this year, and was subsequently expelled from the UDI. The rightist coalition wanted to present a united front against Eduardo Frei Ruiz Tagle, a christian democrat. Frei Ruiz is the candidate for the ruling coalition, dubbed "Concertacion para la Democracia." Frei Ruiz, the son of former president Eduardo Frei Montalva (1964-1970), has received between 50% and 60% of voter support in most recent public opinion polls. The other three candidates for the Dec. 11 elections are Manfred Max Neef, an environmentalist running as an independent; Eugenio Pizarro, from the Allende Movement of the Democratic Left (MIDA); and Cristian Reitze, who represents the New Left Alliance.
