Documentation of Roman Excavations by Laser DOCUMENTATION OF ROM AN EXCAVATIONS BY LA SER SCANNING K. Szocs, Z. This paper presents a comparison study of the established geodetic tec hnologies and laserscanning. The modern technology allows more details high accuracy, rapid data acquisition, and more realistic new products – such as three dimensional virtual models or textured meshes – or even orthophotos can be easily created. First o f all we studied the required archeologic documentation of various excavations and realized that better results, more realistic and detailed documentation can be reached at the same time as with traditional surveys. We developed a mapping process for arche ologically relevant objects – ground plans, overviews, brickworks – which is preferred in many cases. In case of roman tessellated pavements or brickwork drawings the documentation process can be shortened, and human resource can be saved using ortophotos or post -processing. Although the post -processing requires time, it is productive and accelerates the work in the excavation field. Three dimensional wireframe models or the point cloud itself help us to draw reconstruction plans or in other applications li ke creating chronoscope. In every respect, the most important view was that we wanted to get such a documentation, which can present more information than the traditional methods and aims to create a global archeological informational system. 1.     ABOUT AQUINCUM North of Rome, Budapest is the only European capital, which presents its Roman heritage to visitors in a large, contiguous area. The Romans reached the Danube around the birth of Christ. Their settlement, Aquincum, covers roughly the area of modern-day Óbuda. The Military Town was located around modern-day Flórián Square, while the Civil Town lay some 2 km away. The remains of the Civil Town can be seen in the Aquincum Museum’s Archaeological Park. The stone collection of the museum is one of the richest in Hungary; the artefacts cover the entire course of Roman occupation. The material remains that tell us about how the Romans lived can be seen at the exhibitions. The artefacts include a unique find of music history: the 3rd-century organ. Its metal parts are the only ones in the world to have survived in entirety and fit for reconstruction. THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF THE MUSEUM The Archaeological Park of the museum covers almost a third of the former Civil Town and presents the ancient town’s forum and its environs: the law court, the large temple, the large public baths and the market hall. Even in their ruins, the signs of the high level of urban culture can be clearly observed: the aqueduct, sewage system, flush toilets and public buildings with running water. The Chronoscope (“past viewing device”) is there to help visitors imagine how the former structures would have looked like. The buildings of the originally village-like settlement were made of timber and clay. These were replaced in the 2nd century by stone buildings.

The field trip will allow participants to have an on-the-spot, hands-on experience of the impact of Empires, cultural interaction on the peripheries of Empires, and the transformation of frontiers. Field trips The course includes two museum visits in Budapest: in collaboration with the local archaeologists, we will discover the rich material culture found at the borders and now housed in the Hungarian National Museum and the Aquincum Museum. It also includes a field trip to a Roman villa at Lake Balaton, continuing along the Danube limes (now a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage Site title) to Pécs, with a visit of the early Christian monuments in Pécs (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
