A Timeline of Women at Yale Helen Robertson Gage Becomes the first Woman to Graduate with a Master’S Degree in Public Health
1905 Florence Bingham Kinne in the Pathology Department, becomes the first female instructor at Yale. 1910 First Honorary Degree awarded to a woman, Jane Addams, the developer of the settlement house movement in America and head of Chicago’s Hull House. 1916 Women are admitted to the Yale School of Medicine. Four years later, Louise Whitman Farnam receives the first medical degree awarded to a woman: she graduates with honors, wins the prize for the highest rank in examinations, and is selected as YSM commencement speaker. 1919 A Timeline of Women at Yale Helen Robertson Gage becomes the first woman to graduate with a Master’s degree in Public Health. At 6:00 AM on July 7, with a ceremonial parade of the library’s earliest accessions, the two-month project of moving the books commenced. Leading the trail of librarians was the head librarian, Andrew Keogh, and the head of the serials cataloguing department, Grace Pierpont Fuller. Fuller was the descendant of James Pierpont, one of the principal founders of Yale, and was carrying the Latin Bible given by her ancestor during the fabled 1701 donation of books that signaled the foundation of the Collegiate School. -
Meals+With+Faculty+Program+Semester+Report+
Introduction Every day, Yale College students interact with their instructors, which include professors, lecturers, and teaching fellows. However, these interactions are typically limited to the classroom and office hours, and relationships tend not to continue past the end of the semester. By creating another way in which students can interact with faculty, students will have the ability to develop stronger relationships, which are valuable for both students and faculty. A Meals with Faculty program would allow students to interact more easily with professors, lecturers, and teaching fellows outside of typical learning spaces. This project aims to institute a robust Meals with Faculty program within Yale College. Background Currently, Yale College does not offer a college-wide Meals with Faculty program for students. Although professors in some classes invite students to meals, whether in the dining hall or off-campus, these are only a handful. There are also several residential colleges that have similar Meals with Faculty programs, such as Davenport College, Branford College, and Grace Hopper College. These college-specific programs are typically run by the residential college councils. In addition to this, students already have the opportunity to schedule meals with tenured professors, who are able to have lunches in the dining halls free of charge. However, many students are unaware of this opportunity or feel uncomfortable asking professors to a meal. A Meals with Faculty program would break down this “barrier” to interacting more with faculty. Peer Institutions Most of Yale’s peer institutions have Meals with Faculty programs in place. Each peer institution has designed a unique program to encourage relationships between students and faculty. -

Benjamin Franklin College Dean’s Notes – January 29, 2018 Dear Franklinites, It's the season of Masquerade and Rush and basketball and flu, all of which illustrate -- in ways smooth and sticky -- the need for reliance upon others. I toured a group of alums from the class of 1968 through Ben Frank over the weekend. They were suitably awed by the place as we stopped at each marker of the college's communal life. They made little asides about how different Yale looks now from then, a few of which induced an internal eye roll. But mostly what I noticed is that they wouldn't stop talking! No matter how much I cajoled, herded, yelled at them to keep moving, more to see. Fifty years gone and when these guys come back together the conversation never lapses. Mostly mundane stuff about a particular party or prank, some late night antics. (No paeans to their deans, alas). They were happy to be in one another's company. As, I hope, are you, and will you be. First-years: See you at Fireside Chats, starting tonight! Juniors: - if you're looking for a lot of togetherness, in the very best sense... FroCo applications are due Wednesday by 11:59 pm. Williams Intellectual Manhood: Becoming Men of the Republic at a Southern University, 1795- 1861 (Under the direction of Professor Harry L. Watson) ―Intellectual Manhood‖ explores antebellum southern students‘ personal and civic development at the University of North Carolina, the first state university to open its doors to students. Historians have characterized southern colleges as crucibles of sectional loyalty and culture, aimed at teaching students how to be southerners and gentlemen above all. This dissertation, however, demonstrates that southern education was more nuanced: it was cosmopolitan, southern, and American. Students described its goal as ―intellectual manhood,‖ which they strove to achieve by learning to think, read, write, and speak their way to adulthood. Though collegiate vice and dissipation threatened to impede young men‘s development, formal and informal education at the University emphasized a culture of mental and moral improvement. In the process, students incorporated values conventionally associated with middle-class society— industry, temperance, and discipline—and adapted them (at times uncomfortably) to youth culture and the southern gentry‘s traditional honor-bound, rugged worldview. Young men entered college with ambitions to serve the republic as virtuous, confident, and competent citizens. -
