More specifically, inspired and contextualized by Hamid Naficy’s theory of ‘accented cinema,’ it will explore a subgenre of the road movie that features indigenous characters and narratives. Three indigenous-centered road movies – Powwow Highway, Smoke Signals, and Barking Water – help me define a specific type of accented cinema which has emerged in United States. Ceisy Nita Wuntu — James Fenimore Cooper and the Idea of Environmental Conservation in the Leatherstocking Tales (1823-1841) JAMES FENIMORE COOPER AND THE IDEA OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN THE LEATHERSTOCKING TALES (1823-1841) Ceisy Nita Wuntu IKIP Negeri Manado [email protected] Abstract The spirit to respect the rights of all living environment in literature that was found in the 1970s in William Rueckert’s works was considered as the emergence of the new criticism in literature, ecocriticism, which brought the efforts to trace the spirit in works of literature. Works arose after the 1840s written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margareth Fuller, the American transcendentalists, are considered to be the first works presenting the respect for the living environment as claimed by Peter Barry. James Fenimore Cooper’s reputation in American literary history appeared because of his role in leading American literature into its identity. Among his works, The Leatherstocking Tales mostly attracted European readers’ attention when he successfully applied American issues. The major issue in the work is the spirit of the immigrants to dominate flora, fauna and human beings as was experienced by the indigenous people. Applying ecocriticism theory in doing the analysis, it has been found that Cooper’s works particularly his The Leatherstocking Tales (1823-1841) present Cooper’s great concern for the sustainable life. He shows that compassion, respect, wisdom, and justice are the essential aspects in preserving nature that meet the main concern of ecocriticism and hence the works that preceded the transcendentalists’ work places themselves as the embryo of ecocriticism in America. -

Many Trails, Many Tribes: Images of American Indians in Fiction Since Christopher Columbus first set foot on American land, encountered the natives, and described them in his journal as "tall and handsome, their hair not curly, but flowing and thick, like horsehair," American Indians have captured the imagination of authors and their audiences throughout the world. Like many early explorers and colonists, Columbus brought his Old World experience and prejudices to bear on people about whom he knew nothing and with whom he could barely communicate. He assumes that their enemies are cannibals in service to the Great Khan, and that "they would readily become Christian; it appeared to me that they have no religion." He finds them surprisingly friendly and gullible: "I gave them some red bonnets and glass beads which they hung around their necks, and many other things of small value, at which they were so delighted and so eager to please us that we could not believe it." Thus begins one of the myths about American Indians; they are so naïve that one can buy their land with a string of beads; if one compensates them appropriately (as for oil discovered on Osage land), they'll squander the money on fancy cars that they’ll abandon when they run out of gas. Columbus also marvels at the virtues of the natives he encounters; in return for "things of small value," they offer gifts, seem to help Columbus in his quest for the source of their small amounts of silver and gold, and feed his men. He notes their physical beauty and the beauty of their crafts: their canoes, their homes, pottery, and masks. -

Intercultural Communication Studies XX: 2 (2011) LIU & ZH ANG Self- and Counter-Representations of Native Americans: Stereotypical Images of and New Images by Native Americans in Popular Media Kedong LIU & Hui ZH ANG Harbin Institute of Technology, China Abstract Historically speaking, American mainstream media have distorted Native American images, which has misled the formation of young Native Americans’ identity. The emerging Native American writer and film maker Sherman Alexie has countered the distortion by uttering his own voice and presenting his own image of the new American Indians. Alexie has replaced the reticent, subservient, disappearing “Noble Savage” with the expressive, free, and surviving new Indians. Alexie depicts successful and resilient American Indian characters and plots in films, novels (sometimes with cartoon illustrations). He has also disintegrated the stereotypical mascot and ushered in a new Indian image. Racial genocide, assimilation, and oppression are substituted by syncretism. Keywords: Native American, film, TV, radio, novel, cartoon Introduction American mainstream media have always tended to distort Native American images. The film, Dances with Wolves; the radio and TV Western, The Lone Ranger; and the novel, by Fenimore Cooper, The Last of the Mohicans, to name just a few, present negative or romanticized images of American Indians, either nasty or cruel, or subservient and laconic, but all disappearing. 1These distortions have severely misled the formation of young Native Americans’ identity. As a counter strategy, native writers and film workers began to counteract by putting whites in their lenses and representing their own lives and images. This study2 takes examples from several media: film, TV, radio, books, cartoons, etc., and focuses on the works of the emerging Native American Artist Sherman Alexie. -

From 1933 through to 2013 productions of The Lone Ranger media franchise have continued to extend this invitation. The evocation of the past through The Lone Ranger franchise includes Tonto: the masked man’s Indian1 sidekick. Tonto has remained an element of the franchise since the inception of The Lone Ranger and the development of Tonto presents an intriguing map of changing Indian characterization across the twentieth-century. This study argues that Tonto has developed as the masked man’s foil to incorporate colonial violence and Anglo-American culpability into The Lone Ranger narratives. In doing so, this thesis notes that Tonto’s assimilation within narratives of The Lone Ranger can be read like a parable, presenting a model of appropriate social responses for the interrelation of races through the masked man and Tonto’s partnership. The structure and style of Tonto’s assimilation develops gradually in the franchise over the course of the twentieth-century. Initially Tonto’s assimilation suggested a Romanticized future for the Indian following colonization. However, later productions of The Lone Ranger juxtapose assimilation with extermination. -

Cross-Cultural Hybridity in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans Lindsey Claire Smith Scholars of James Fenimore Cooper have generally interpreted The Last of the Mohicans and its American Indian characters as emblematic of the Vanishing American convention in American literature, whereby Natives must be subsumed in order for a young America to fulfill its destiny. In a popular sense, the novel has come to be viewed as an adventure story of our country's beginnings, an American counterpart to Sir Walter Scotf s Waverley escapades set against the backdrop of a pristine yet unpredict- able wilderness, the inhabitants of which eventually disappear. Typically, approaches to Cooper's novel draw on sources such as Rousseau and Columbus,' whose contemplations of a "new" American landscape and its inhabitants serve as mudi of the basis for the Noble Savage convention in literature. Indians' roles in defining America and differentiating it from the "Old World" perhaps explain the extreme popularity of Cooper's Leatherstock- ing series among runeteenth-century readers who were eager to locate a urufying, recognizable history for their "new" country, which was endur- ing—violently—the growing pains of settlement and national expansion and was seeking to define its imique contribution to literature, art, and history amidst the shadow of Europe. Ironically, while Indians were chief referents for imagining Americanness, they were also chief roadblocks to the nation's achievement of domiruon over the North American continent, and as a result the American experience came to be typified in literature by Native and European contact and corifrontation—in other words, encoun- e p t^ t bth ltl d geographical borders at both cultural and geographical borders. -

He is no longer concerned with social white Americans that buzz with pins through them, buzz loudly against every mortal thing except the pin itself. The pin of the Great Ideal. One gets irritated with Cooper because he never for once snarls at the Great Ideal Pin which transfixes him. No, indeed. Rather, he tries to push it through the very heart of the Continent. But I have loved the Leatherstocking books so dearly. Wish-fulfilment! Anyhow, one is not supposed to take LOVE seriously, in these books. Eve Effingham, impaled on the social pin, conscious all the time of her own ego and of nothing else, suddenly fluttering in throes of love: no, it makes me sick. LOVE is never LOVE until it has a pin pushed through it and becomes an IDEAL. The ego, turning on a pin, is wildly IN LOVE, always. Because that's the thing to be. Cooper was a GENTLEMAN, in the worst sense of the word. In the Nineteenth Century sense of the word. A correct, clockwork man. Not altogether, of course. The great national Grouch was grinding inside him. Probably he called it COSMIC URGE. Americans usually do: in capital letters. Best stick to National Grouch. The great American grouch. Cooper had it, gentleman that he was. That is why he flitted round Europe so uneasily. Of course, in Europe he could be, and was, a gentleman to his heart's content. -

ABSTRACT American Indian Stereotypes in Early Western Literature and the Lasting Influence on American Culture Lacy Noel Cotton, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting three major stereotypes concerning Native Americans, found in early western literature between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The three defining stereotypes of Native Americans are the bloodthirsty savage, the Noble Savage, and the Halfbreed. These gross misrepresentations of the indigenous people of North America not only reflect the popular opinion of minority cultures held by dominant white society during the time of their publication, they also contribute to the development of casual desensitization in white culture to the injustices heaped upon minority groups today. Though the study of these stereotypes in this thesis is focused primarily in the past, concentrating on the works of major western novelists such as James Fenimore Cooper, Zane Grey, Charles Brockden Brown, and Owen Wister, as well as on pulp fiction and Beadle dime novels of the era, the influences of the fictional depictions persist into present media. These stereotypes also extend to the national perspective of miscegenation between the white and Native American races, and are just one of the multiple ways in which stereotyping is used by white dominant culture to label and limit minority cultures within their own society.
