ABSTRACT SHERMAN ALEXIE’S RESERVATION: RELOCATING THE CENTER OF INDIAN IDENTITY by Tracey L. Connette NOVEMBER, 2010 Director: Ellen L. Arnold, PhD DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Indian reservations are territories within the United States recognized by the federal government as land reserved specifically for American Indians. Indigenous communities still referred to as tribes have some autonomy over the reserved lands, which allow tribes freedom to maintain and preserve cultural heritage. Indian reservations are societies within the larger mainstream America, making physical and social boundaries problematic for cross-cultural exchange. Indian writer Sherman Alexie challenges the misrepresentations of Indians which originated from a EuroAmerican perspective of the “outside looking in” to these cultures. Sherman Alexie presents the Indian perspective of “looking out” at mainstream society. Rather than evoking a desire for one homogenous society, Alexie’s narratives reveal Indian identity as a distinct identity compatible with other cultures. The homogenous element Alexie does include in all of his literature is the human condition. This thesis demonstrates how Sherman Alexie conceptualizes the reservation as a center of Indian identity in three of his novels, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1993), Reservation Blues (1995) and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2009). In The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven , the reservation functions as a center of post-colonial trauma rather than existing as a cultural hub. In Reservation Blues , Alexie portrays the center as a process rather than location of Indian identity. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian , the center of Indian identity is the Indian character him or herself; the reservation is only elemental as part of the process of Indian experience. -

1 Prehistoric Times Our Landscape and First People The countryside along the Hudson River and throughout Greene County always has been a lure for settlers and speculators. Newcomers and longtime residents find the waterway, its tributaries, the Catskills, and our hills and valleys a primary reason for living and enjoying life here. New Baltimore and its surroundings were formed and massaged by the dynamic forces of nature, the result of ongoing geologic events over millions of years.1 The most prominent geographic features in the region came into being during what geologists called the Paleozoic era, nearly 550 million years ago. It was a time when continents collided and parted, causing upheavals that pushed vast land masses into hills and mountains and complementing lowlands. The Kalkberg, the spiny ridge running through New Baltimore, is named for one of the rock layers formed in ancient times. Immense seas covered much of New York and served as collect- ing pools for sediments that consolidated into today’s rock formations. The only animals around were simple forms of jellyfish, sponges, and arthropods with their characteristic jointed legs and exoskeletons, like grasshoppers and beetles. The next integral formation event happened 1.6 million years ago during the Pleistocene epoch when the Laurentide ice mass developed in Canada. This continental glacier grew unyieldingly, expanding south- ward and retreating several times, radically altering the landscape time and again as it traveled. Greene County was buried. The cry was answered by a loud shout from a little thicket, where the incautious party had piled their arms; and at the next moment, Hawkeye, too eager to load the rifle he had regained, was seen advancing upon them, brandishing the clubbed weapon, and cutting the air with wide and powerful sweeps. Bold and rapid as was the progress of the scout, it was exceeded by that of a light and vigorous form which, bounding past him, leaped, with incredible activity and daring, into the very center of the Hurons, where it stood, whirling a tomahawk, and flourishing a glittering knife, with fearful menaces, in front of Cora. Quicker than the thoughts could follow those unexpected and audacious movements, an image, armed in the emblematic panoply of death, glided before their eyes, and assumed a threatening attitude at the other’s side. The savage tormentors recoiled before these warlike intruders, and uttered, as they appeared in such quick succession, the often repeated and peculiar exclamations of surprise, followed by the well–known and dreaded appellations of: The Last of the Mohicans: Chapter 12 by James Fenimoore Cooper “Le Cerf Agile! More specifically, inspired and contextualized by Hamid Naficy’s theory of ‘accented cinema,’ it will explore a subgenre of the road movie that features indigenous characters and narratives. Three indigenous-centered road movies – Powwow Highway, Smoke Signals, and Barking Water – help me define a specific type of accented cinema which has emerged in United States. As the English-speaking population grew, so did a desire for services in English, primarily driven by members of the Church of England, the official church of the Province. The city‘s population, decimated following its destruction in 1690, was about 300 households in 1759 when land for an English chapel was purchased.1 Ground was broken the same year for a building originally planned as a chapel for all English speaking peoples,2 and Presbyterians and other ―dissenters‖ (non-Anglican Protestants) participated in both land and material acquisition. Construction began in 1762. As for the Presbyterians, while the actual date of organization is unknown, the best current approximation is 1760. Friction developed early on between the two competing English groups. A 1765 letter from the Schenectady Anglican churchwardens to Sir William Johnson sought his acceptance as a trustee and his support for a petition before the Governor to grant the congregation a ―Charter to Secure their Rights and privileges in the Church built here‖ in order to ―prevent for the future the presbyterians from making any unjust attempts on the priviledges in the Church.‖3 –Continued on Page 4 John C. -

Ceisy Nita Wuntu — James Fenimore Cooper and the Idea of Environmental Conservation in the Leatherstocking Tales (1823-1841) JAMES FENIMORE COOPER AND THE IDEA OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN THE LEATHERSTOCKING TALES (1823-1841) Ceisy Nita Wuntu IKIP Negeri Manado [email protected] Abstract The spirit to respect the rights of all living environment in literature that was found in the 1970s in William Rueckert’s works was considered as the emergence of the new criticism in literature, ecocriticism, which brought the efforts to trace the spirit in works of literature. Works arose after the 1840s written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margareth Fuller, the American transcendentalists, are considered to be the first works presenting the respect for the living environment as claimed by Peter Barry. James Fenimore Cooper’s reputation in American literary history appeared because of his role in leading American literature into its identity. Among his works, The Leatherstocking Tales mostly attracted European readers’ attention when he successfully applied American issues. The major issue in the work is the spirit of the immigrants to dominate flora, fauna and human beings as was experienced by the indigenous people. Applying ecocriticism theory in doing the analysis, it has been found that Cooper’s works particularly his The Leatherstocking Tales (1823-1841) present Cooper’s great concern for the sustainable life. He shows that compassion, respect, wisdom, and justice are the essential aspects in preserving nature that meet the main concern of ecocriticism and hence the works that preceded the transcendentalists’ work places themselves as the embryo of ecocriticism in America.
