Pre- Launch Mission Operation Report No. M-932-68-08 MEMORANDUM To: A/Acting Administrator /7/4-7dY& 5/ From: MA/Apollo Program Director Subject: Apollo 8 Mission (AS-503) No earlier than 21 December 1968, we plan to launch the next Apollo/Saturn V mission, Apollo 8. This will be the first manned Saturn V flight, the second flight of a manned Apollo spacecraft and the first manned Apollo flight to the lunar vicinity. The purpose of this mission is to demonstrate: crew/space vehicle/mission support facilities performance during a manned Saturn V mission with CSM, and performance of nominal and selected backup lunar orbital mission activities including translunar injection, CSM navigation, communications and midcourse corrections, and CSM consumables assessment and passive thermal control. Mission duration is planned for approximately six days and three hours. The launch will be the third Saturn V from.Launch Complex 39 at Kennedy Space Center. The launch window opens at 7~51 EST 21 December and closes for December at 18:20 EST 27 December, Daily windows during this period vary in duration from 4-l/2 hours to approximately l-1/2 hours. The nominal mission will comprise: ascent to parking orbit; translunar injection by the S-IVB; CSM separation from S-IVB; translunar coast with required midcourse corrections; lunar orbit insertion and circularization; up to 10 lunar orbits; transearth injection, transearth coast and required midcourse corrections; reentry and splashdown. Unmanned scientific spacecraft have probed for facts about matter, radiation and magnetism in space, and have collected data relating to the Moon, Venus, Mars, the Sun and some of the stars, and reported their findings to ground stations on Earth. Spacecraft have been put into orbit around the Earth as weather observation stations, as communications relay stations for a world-wide telephone and television network, and as aids to navigation. In addition, the space program has accelerated the advance of technology for science and industry, contributing many new ideas, processes and materials. All this took place in the decade of the Sixties. What next? What may be expected of space exploration in the Seventies? NASA has prepared a series of publications and motion pictures to provide a look forward to SPACE IN THE SEVENTIES. The topics covered in this series include: Earth orbital science; planetary exploration; practical applications of satellites; technology utilization; man in space; and aeronautics. SPACE IN THE SEVENTIES presents the planned programs of NASA for the coming decade. -

It exhibited an unusual outburst profile with multiple peaks in the X-ray, as observed by several X-ray satellites over three months. Here we present observations of this source performed in the X-ray/gamma-ray and near infrared domains, and focus on a simultaneous observation performed with the Chandra-High Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrometer (HETGS) and the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). HETGS provides high resolution spectra of the Si-edge region, which yield clues as to the source's distance and reveal evidence (at 99.999% significance) of an outflow with a velocity of 2 800 km s−1. -

The NASM lies on a ten-acre site on the southeast corner of the National Mall. The site is bounded by Jefferson Drive to the north, Fourth Street to the east, Independence Avenue to the south, and Seventh Street to the west. To the north of the project site, is the National Mall, and beyond is the West Building of the National Gallery of Art. The Department of Transportation and the future Eisenhower Memorial are located to the south. The National Museum of the American Indian is located to the east and, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden are located to the west. Primary visitor entrances to the museum are located on the north and south sides of the building, and the nearest metro is the L’Enfant Plaza station. The restaurant pavilion and garage entrance are located on the east side; and a sculptural element, memorial tree grove, and an additional garage entrance are located to the west. -
