Since the quarries proposed are located on the high slope sides of the range with thick overburden and also the area seems to be a rock fall potential area, it is required to analyze the level of risk of slopes using micro-slope analysis for understanding potential slope instability. 4. Department of History University of Calicut, Kerala Abstract: The Khilafat movement which started as an international Muslim agitation against the sovereignty of the British colonial forces all over the world had its repercussions in India also, and its effects were felt among the Muslims of Malabar too. The Malabar Rebellion which started as a violent protest against the exploitation of the feudal landlords, who were mostly Hindus and the supporters of the British colonial rule, soon turned into a part of the freedom struggle and gathered momentum. But unfortunately due to the misguided directions of religions leadership what started as a struggle for freedom against oppression and exploitation soon deteriorated into the horrors of a series of communal conflicts. An examination of the Khilafat movement in Malabar would reveal that the Muslims of Malabar began to identify themselves as part of the National Muslim Community only by the dawn of the 20 th century. The political scenario of Malabar from 1920 to 1925 is specifically marked by the life and activities of Muhammed Abdurahiman. INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT Kozhikode as a district came into existence on 1st January 1957. After the formation of Kerala state in 1956, when Malabar district was divided into three districts, the Central district with headquarters at Calicut (Kozhikode) was named as Kozhikode. The district, which initially had 5 taluks, had undergone several changes and the present district with 4 taluks was formed in 2013. The early history of the district is lost in obscurity. Neither inscription nor works of classical geographers and poets help us in reconstructing in full its early history. However, it is certain that during the Sangam Age the district formed part of the empire of the Cheras. During the Sangam age i.e. in the first two centuries of A.D the district was known as Poozhinad, which was later, annexed to Chera empire. The history of Kozhikode district for the next few centuries i.e. upto 8th century A.D is obscure. Kozhikode and its surroundings were part of Polanad ruled by Kolathiris. The ancestors of present Zamorin family defeated Kolathiri’s forces and established their headquarters at Kozhikode. Because of the persistent efforts and administrative abilities of the rulers who were later known as Zamorin, Kozhikode became an important commercial and trading centre during post Sangam age. During the pre Portuguese period the Zamorin achieved the suzerainty over a large track of land and many neighbouring Rajas accepted him as their protector.

    Master plan for Ponnani Town -2035 1 NEED FOR THE PLAN Ponnani town is a known trade centre in the history of Malabar and is situated in the Malappuram District. Ponnani, the taluk headquarters is enriched with rivers, lakes, canals and sea shore. With large facilities for eco tourism options, rich tradition, trade and service, the city is blooming as one of the major urban centre in Malappuram District. The chapter gives an insight into the town and specifies the need for a Master Plan in the area. For this the Master Plan area/ Ponnani town is delineated as the Ponnani Municipal area. 1.1 The Town Ponnani is an ancient coastal town and an important fishing center in Malappuram District. Spread over an area of 24.82 km2, the town is situated at the mouth of Bharathapuzha, the second longest river of the State, and is bounded by the Lakshadweep Sea on the west. Thus the town was prominent as a scenic, coastal town since ancient times. Being a major coastal town, the place has much historical significance too. It is often regarded as one of the oldest ports in South India and has contributed to the trade and economy of Malabar from very early times. Ponnani formerly known as Ponani and Paniyani is sometimes roughly identified with the port Tyndis of the Roman accounts. Ponnani taluk is the smallest taluk in Malappuram District. Panvel-Cochin national highway NH 66 (formerly NH 17) passes through the heart of the town. Ponnani has found a renowned place in the history related to Islamic history.

There were four Kunjali Marakkars ,who were the naval commanders of Zamorin in his naval war against the Portuguese from 1507 to 1600. The Kunjali Marakkars are credited with organizing the first naval defense of the Indian coast. The title of Marakkar was given by the Zamorin. It may have been derived from the Malayalam language word marakkalam meaning ‘boat,’ and kar, a termination, showing possession.The four Kunjali Marakkars are :Kutti Ahmed Ali – Kunjali Marakkar I (1520 – 1531)Kutti Pokker Ali – Kunjali Marakkar II (1531 – 1571)Pattu Marakkar – Kunjali Marakkar III (1571 – 1595)Mohammed Ali – Kunjali Marakkar IV (1595 – 1600). Marakkars were originally Muslim marine merchants of port Kochi who left for Ponnani in the Zamorin's dominion when the Portuguese fleets came to Kingdom of Cochin. They offered their men, ships and wealth against the Portuguese to the Zamorin of Calicut-the king took them into his service and eventually they became the Admirals of his fleet.The end of Kunjali Marakkars is one of the tragic episodes in Kerala history and it is all the more so in view of the ignoble treachery of the Zamorin who was once his lord and master.

However with the circumnavigation of the Cape of Good Hope, the Portuguese raised claim for an exclusive right to the new route, which gave an entirely new character to the trade of Asia including that of Malabar1. In fact the strategies of the Lusitanians to control Asian trade revolved round two modes of operations: on the one hand diverse mechanisms were evolved to prevent the flow of commodities from the Indian waters to the Levant.

Jahfar Odakkal Department of History and West Asian Studies, EMEA College of Arts and Science, Kondotti, Kerala Abstract: Tuhfathul Mujahideen,authored by Sheikh Zainuddin Maqdum, a renowned Islamic scholar of 16th century Kerala, can be considered as a classic text in the genre of resistance literature against colonialism. Along with other works of the same period such asTahriz and Fathul Mubin it represented the jihadic outlook of the contemporary ulamas.Apart from these,Tuhfa is the first historical work of Kerala authored by a Keralite. The present study attempts to place Tuhfa as one of the pioneering work which heralded a long tradition of Anti-Colonial literature in Kerala. It also tries to evaluate the methods of struggle as propounded by the text and it's historical relevance.It is also intended to read the text both in the perspectives of the local Mappila community of Malabar and also in the broader perspective of wider Islamic world of the contemporary times. Key words: Tuhfathul Mujahidin, Resistance Literature, anti Colonial Literature, Tahriz, Fathul Mubin The colonial aggrandisements of Malabar region1 led to the natural origin of anti-colonial literary works. During the Portuguese interruptions in the Indian Ocean World in the sixteenth century, there were several counter attacks from the Asian communities. Historians are widely acknowledged the importance of such resistances, but they have not seriously analysed the ideas and motivations of the people on the basis of their own sources, despite the presence of numerous valuable materials2.

Pius Malekandathil Professor Centre for Historical Studies Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi ABSTRACT:The maritime piracy included a wide variety of associated criminal activities including attack and confiscation of vessels and merchandise, imprisonment or torturing of merchants and rulers in sea- -space in return for ransom money, attack and raiding of coastal trading centers and villages, creation of fear and terror in chief channels of navigation and attacking commercial competitors as a strategy to weaken the trading ability and the wealth-mobilizing ability of their rivals. All this applied to coastal south west India during the period under study. The merchant chiefs of Cannanore like Mamale Marakkar and later under Poca Amame (Pokar Ahamad) and Pocarallee (Pokar Ali) were some of the better known protagonists that the Portuguese had to deal with. But the Malabar corsairs had their corresponding English and Sicilian corsairs in the Mediterranean. KEY-WORDS: India, Malabar, Cannanore, piracy, corsairs.
