Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT) is always on the move, girding up its loins with grit and determination to unravel the myriad, unexplored mysteries of knowledge. EVOLUTION Originally known as University of Cochin, the University came into being in 1971 through an Act of the Legislature resultant to a concerted campaign for quality postgraduate education in the State of Kerala. Reorganization of the University into Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) saw the fulfillment of the aspirations of the pioneers that spearheaded the movement for establishment of a Science & 4 Technology University in the State. The process of reorientation resulted in redefining the objectives as “the promotion of graduate and post graduate studies and advanced research in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management and social science.” The Syndicate, Academic Council and Senate are the Principal Authorities of the University. The academic structure comprises of nine Faculties viz. Engineering, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Law, Marine Science, Medical Sciences and Technology, Science, Social Science and Technology. There are Boards of Studies in different Faculties also. A Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Centre (STIC) was established in 1996 in collaboration with the Government of Kerala. The Government of Kerala has recently established three inter-university centres in CUSAT, in the areas of Nanotechnology, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Marine Biotechnology. In addition to the support from the state Government, these centres get massive funding from the Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD), Government of India. The Union Ministry of HRD has declared the School of Legal Studies as a Depository of IPR and an IPR chair has been introduced. Another prestigious chair introduced by the Ministry of HRD is the Rajiv Gandhi Chair on Sustainable Development. By giving recognition to several well-established premier research institutions in the country and the Southern Naval Caoomand of Indian Navy, the University has brought within its reach the resources available in these institutions for the use of the academic community. Specializations are available in almost all Faculties / Departments for higher studeis and research. PRES ENT Cast in the mould of a federal University, distinctly different from other Universities in the State, today CUSAT is a premier Science and Technology University of the country. While striving to live up to the expectations of the society, the University has made quantum leaps in its academic pursuits and has spread its wings far and wide to encompass new and emerging frontiers across the academic horizon. • Chapter I Christianity in Kerala: Tracing Antecedents
CHAPTER I CHRISTIANITY IN KERALA: TRACING ANTECEDENTS Introduction This chapter is an analysis of the early history of Christianity in Kerala. In the initial part it attempts to trace the historical background of Christianity from its origin to the end of seventeenth century. The period up to the colonial period forms the first part after which the history of the colonial part is given. This chapter also tries to examine how colonial forces interfered in the life of Syrian Christians and how it became the foremost factor for the beginning of conflicts. It tried to explain about the splits that happened in the community because of the interference of the Portuguese. It likewise deals with the relation of Dutch with the Syrian Christian community. It also discusses the conflict between the Jesuit and Carmelite missionaries. History of Christianity in Kerala in the Pre-Colonial Period Kerala, which is situated on the south west coast of Peninsular India, is one of the oldest centers of Christianity in the world. This coast was popularly known as Malabar. The presence of Christian community in the pre-colonial period of Kerala is an unchallenged reality. It began to appear here from the early days of Christendom.1 But the exact period in which Christianity was planted in Malabar, by whom, how or under what conditions, cannot be said with any confidence. However historians have offered unimportant guesses in the light of traditional legends and sources. The origin of Christianity was subject to wide enquiry and research by scholars. Different contradictory theories have been formulated by historians, religious leaders, and politicians on the Christian proselytizing in India.

  • Aura of Abdu Rahiman Sahib in Forming Community Consciousness and National Pride (Identity) (Among the Muslims) in Colonial Malabar
Science, Technology and Development ISSN : 0950-0707 Radical, Progressive, Rationale: Aura of Abdu Rahiman Sahib in forming Community Consciousness and National Pride (Identity) (among the Muslims) in Colonial Malabar Dr. Muhammed Maheen A. Professor. Department of History University of Calicut, Kerala Abstract: The Khilafat movement which started as an international Muslim agitation against the sovereignty of the British colonial forces all over the world had its repercussions in India also, and its effects were felt among the Muslims of Malabar too. The Malabar Rebellion which started as a violent protest against the exploitation of the feudal landlords, who were mostly Hindus and the supporters of the British colonial rule, soon turned into a part of the freedom struggle and gathered momentum. But unfortunately due to the misguided directions of religions leadership what started as a struggle for freedom against oppression and exploitation soon deteriorated into the horrors of a series of communal conflicts. An examination of the Khilafat movement in Malabar would reveal that the Muslims of Malabar began to identify themselves as part of the National Muslim Community only by the dawn of the 20 th century. The political scenario of Malabar from 1920 to 1925 is specifically marked by the life and activities of Muhammed Abdurahiman. The present paper is an attempt to examine the political life of Abdurahiman. Keywords: Nationalism, Khilafat, Non-Cooperation, Simon commission, Mappila. I. INTRODUCTION In the history of the development of Indian nationalism in the 20 th century, especially in Malabar, the role of Muslims like Muhammed Abdurahiman can be remembered only with great pride and honour 1.

Government of Kerala INDSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY 2017 KOZHIKODE DISTRICT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIES AND COMMERCE, KERALA Website: www.dic.kerala.gov.in, Email: [email protected] Industrial Potential Survey 2017 - Kozhikode Page 1 Industrial Potential Survey 2017 - Kozhikode Page 2 CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT Kozhikode as a district came into existence on 1st January 1957. After the formation of Kerala state in 1956, when Malabar district was divided into three districts, the Central district with headquarters at Calicut (Kozhikode) was named as Kozhikode. The district, which initially had 5 taluks, had undergone several changes and the present district with 4 taluks was formed in 2013. The early history of the district is lost in obscurity. Neither inscription nor works of classical geographers and poets help us in reconstructing in full its early history. However, it is certain that during the Sangam Age the district formed part of the empire of the Cheras. During the Sangam age i.e. in the first two centuries of A.D the district was known as Poozhinad, which was later, annexed to Chera empire. The history of Kozhikode district for the next few centuries i.e. upto 8th century A.D is obscure. Kozhikode and its surroundings were part of Polanad ruled by Kolathiris. The ancestors of present Zamorin family defeated Kolathiri’s forces and established their headquarters at Kozhikode. Because of the persistent efforts and administrative abilities of the rulers who were later known as Zamorin, Kozhikode became an important commercial and trading centre during post Sangam age. During the pre Portuguese period the Zamorin achieved the suzerainty over a large track of land and many neighbouring Rajas accepted him as their protector.
