CTPL Kookaburra Cup Grand Final 2017/18 V Kangaroo Bay Oval Monday 12th February Umpires Muhammad Qureshi & Mike Graham-Smith Match Referee Richard Widows CTPL Club Championship Award Club Championships Ladder Position Club Points 1 Clarence 316.75 2 Kingborough 305 3 New Town 225 4 North Hobart 202 5 University 199 6 Lindisfarne 162 7 SHSB 144 8 Glenorchy 55 As has been the case the last two season, Clarence and Kingborough are fighting to claim the Club Championship. Kingborough had led for the early part of the season but following from the Christmas break, the Roos have edged ahead narrowly. The club championship reflects the overall position of the clubs within the CTPL, taking into account all CTPL grades, male and female. There is a tight tussle in the middle of the ladder also with New Town continuing to build and move into third position ahead of North Hobart and University. There are still plenty of points up for grabs with two-day cricket featuring heavily for the remainder of the season. Lord Taverners Spirit of Cricket Award The Spirit of Cricket ladder is as tight as ever with the averages of the top four teams separated by only 0.08 points. New Town are in the box seat for an incredible fourth straight award but Kingborough and University are following by the narrowest of margins. Clubs are rated after each game on three aspects with the average rating across all games played by the club in all grades determining the final victor. To have 7 of 8 clubs with an average above 6 reflects that the competition is being played in the right spirit. Spirit of Cricket Ladder Position Club Average 1 New Town 6.33 2 Kingborough 6.32 2 University 6.32 4 North Hobart 6.25 5 Lindisfarne 6.17 5 Clarence 6.11 7 Glenorchy 6.07 8 SHSB 5.90 Kookaburra Cup Wrap Up The Kookaburra Cup featured an exciting innovation in 2017-18 with the inclusion of the Cricket Tasmania U19’s giving them an opportunity to gain valuable experience and top- flight competition ahead of the U19 National Championships. Round 1 was a double header weekend for the ‘new boys’ with the U19’s taking on Kingborough and North Hobart in consecutive days. Despite some promising individual performances over the weekend in particular Jack White’s 78 – it was a tough introduction for the youngsters and the points went to the more experienced teams. In Round 2, a run-a-ball 120 by Joshua Doyle boosted New Town to 5/245 from their 50 overs. In reply Rhett Lockyear went big with 5 fours and 3 sixes in his 66 (58) but University fell just short at 7/225. At Kingston, a patient 94 (136) by Sean Willis saw South SHSB to 5/213. The Knights Nathan Freitag 67 (127) and Clive Rose 91 (113) then combined for a second wicket partnership of 161 to steer Kingborough home with 3 balls to spare. In other games, the Clarence top order fired up led by Liam Devlin 57 (85) to compile 5/245 and then the bowlers blitzed North Hobart, as James Hickey captured the last 5 wickets to fall (5-6) as the Demons were rolled for 88. Glenorchy were also well beaten – all out for 100 in just 30 overs chasing Lindisfarne’s 6/219. The Round 2 action was completed the next day as Lindisfarne backed up against the CT U19’s. It was a case of third game lucky for the youngsters as they chased down the Lightnings imposing 244 with 9 balls to spare – Jayden Harris smashing 7 fours and 2 sixes in a game high 72 (66). Lindisfarne were back to winning ways in Round 3. Kingborough’s 191 - anchored by Beau Webster’s 91 (121), was no enough to overcome Lindisfarne who registered the win in the 49th over thanks to top order batting from Charlie Wakim 41 (61) and Matthew Dance 42 (66). At Kangaroo Bay, Clarence launched an onslaught on the New Town attack as Matthew Wade 111 (105) and Ben Rohrer 101 (89) blitzed 15 fours and 7 sixes between them to catapult the total to 5/319. Daniel Lamb did his best to keep New Town in the chase 84 (68) but Daniel Salpietro (3/36) helped the Roos to dismiss them for 248. The Sharks took only 21.4 overs to overhaul Glenorchy’s 107 while James Faulkner starred with bat (52) and ball (3/20) as University defeated North Hobart. The final game of Round 3 pitted CT U19’s against a rampant Clarence with the Roos recording a double bonus point win in a low scoring affair. Rounds 4 and 5 featured matches against the U19’s. New Town recorded their 2nd win of the season, defeating a gallant U19 team. Batting first the U19’s posted a competitive 6/253 thanks to Keegan Oates 51 (59) and White 91 (126). Jake Hancock was the main contributor for the Bucks with his 111 (138) seeing them home in the 49th over. White (68) passed 50 again for the U19’s to help them to 9/206 against SHSB in Round 5 but the Sharks secured the win in the 44th over. All Round 6 matches were abandoned. In Round 7 North Hobart were too strong for Glenorchy. Everyone in the top order contributed as they chased down the Magpies 8/189 in the 46th over. It was a tale of two captain’s knocks at Kangaroo Bay. First Harry Allanby for the Roos scored 142 (147) lifting Clarence to 4/268. In reply Willis’ run-a-ball 111 got the Sharks within striking distance but they fell agonizingly short, finishing with 7/266. Lamb 112 (100) scored his maiden CTPL hundred for New Town on their way to 274 all out and backed up with the ball (3/51) as Kingborough were bowled out for 226. University batted first at Lindisfarne and a 189-run partnership between Lockyear 121 (116) and James Hortle 109 (124) saw the Lions post an impressive 5/284. Andrew Perrin (3/19) and Joel Logan (4/34) then toppled the Lightning for 201. Tasmanian Tigers bowlers Sam Rainbird (3/33) and Riley Meredith (4/37) were on fire for Clarence in Round 8, as they dismantled the Kingborough top order – sending six of the first seven batsmen back to the sheds without scoring, only captain Rose 69 (86) with some late order support saw the Knights to a total of 127, which Clarence passed comfortably in the 29th over. Batting first was tough going at New Town as well as the Bucks struggled to 102 all out after a rain delayed start. A quick-fire 60 (38) from wicketkeeper Stuart Martin in his 200th match saw SHSB chase the total down in just 14.5 overs. It was a different story at Lindisfarne Oval as Cameron Boyce smashed 7 maximums for North Hobart in his 95 (78) and was well supported by Kyle Scrimegour 47 (44) and Jake Doran 67 (98) as the Demons finished with 8/272. The Lightning batsmen kept pace with that target all the way as Keegan Oates 63 (82), Mac Wright 53 (61) and Luke Doran 52 (60) took them to the brink of completing an impressive run chase. It came down to the final delivery where scores were tied. Ultimately Alex Pyecroft held his nerve better than Tom Briscoe with the former bowling the latter to end the game in a tie! In the round’s other game Lockyear was in the runs again for University with 75 (72) of the 216 run total which proved more than enough to account for Glenorchy as Logan (4/0) and Perrin (3/22) combined again to dismantle the Magpies for 79. With all Round 9’s Saturday matches abandoned, Glenorchy and the CT U19’s had a chance to make up ground on Sunday. Dylan Hay 86 (126) and White 65 (71) saw the U19’s to 4/223 and despite 4 wickets from James Beattie (4/30) half centuries to Magpies James Whiteley 69 (127) and Brad Absolom 50 (52), saw them home for with one ball to spare. After 9 exciting rounds of Kookaburra Cup action, a place in the final all came down toRound 10. With their match abandoned the previous week, SHSB and University remained locked on 20 points in 2nd and 3rd place respectively behind Clarence who were 10 points clear. University faced a tough ask on Saturday as they took on the inform ladder leading Roos without Lockyear who had starred with the bat for the Lions. The task proved too much as Clarence’s total of 9/209 was 69 more than the Lions could manage. Allanby was best with the ball for the Roos taking 4/40. This gave the Sharks the chance to consolidate 2nd place against Lindisfarne but in a tight contest they were always just a little off the pace. Wright 105 (92) and Wakim 62 (100) lifted the Lightning to a challenging 9/257 and although captain Willis led the way with a century of his own 103 (117), SHSB finished short at 9/223. The match between Glenorchy and Kingborough was abandoned, while in a high scoring match at New Town Oval, first Caleb Jewell for North Hobart 119 (113) then Hancock for the Bucks 118 (133), both opened the batting in spectacular style – with North Hobart’s 5/329 providing the highest score of the 2017-18 competition and seeing off a gallant New Town chase 288 all out.
