Presidents Report 2015-16

It is my pleasure to present to you the 2015 -16 season Presidents Report. After assuming the role during November after the resignation of Ricky Welsh, from my position as senior Vice President. I have been slowly but surely finding my feet in the new role. I would quickly like to recognise the previous efforts of outgoing 2014 -15 President Ken Robinson who had held the chair for some 13 years prior to this season. I wish Ken and his family all the best in the future. I would also like to thank our other ex ecutive committee members, in particular Matt Rose and the continuing tireless efforts of Brendan Cunningham. Matt in particular put many hours into the organisation of our CHDCA representative sides, I know firsthand what a challenging role this can be. Once again CHDCA finished strongly in this year’s McDonalds Country Cup state knockout competition, losing a hard fought Semi Final to Parkes in Tamworth. Once again the CHDCA held our annual T20 competition with great success. After a strong platform was put in place the previous season by Grant Lawler and Justin Gilbert, Grant continued to assist in this area which ensured the smooth running of the event. CHDCA also played host to South Coast District Cricket Association for a pre -season T20 challenge. Un fortunately, this event was seriously weather effected. Some play was possible on day two however with a modified single T26 match being played in great spirits. This event also made possible by the efforts of Grant Lawler. Our trophy cabinets have now found what we hope to be a permanent home at the Coffs Harbour Leagues Club after the unfortunate closure of Club Coffs, and an extended period securely locked away in Joan Tolhurst’s garage . A big thank you to John and Joan Tolhurst for ensuring the safekeep ing of this valuable asset. A big thank you to the Coffs Harbour City Council for the resources they continue to put into the Coffs Coast Sport and Le isure Park precinct. Coffs Harbour as a result continues to appear on the radar for many major sporting ev ents. Not least the NSW v South Australia Sheffield Shield match held at the Cex International Stadium this season. The Sports Unit continue to work with curator Russell Fensom to ensure the facility is maintained in outstanding condition. Obviously at times we can lose the use of these facilities at a local level on a temporary basis, however the longer term benefits to this minor inconvenience far outweigh any negative effect. Works have also now commenced on the Turf square at Coffs Coast Hockey Fields. This wicket should be up and running in the early stages of 2017 all going well. Unfortunately, this year saw a substantial drop off in play on our old favourite Brelsford Park due to weather, other events and access which is disappointing. The amenities at Brelsford Park have been deemed unsafe to use. For this reason, Brelsford Park will continue to be used where necessary for lower grade matches or during periods of unavailability at other venues.

2-

Coffs Harbour once again hosted the Country Cricket NSW U17 State Challenge in August 2015. A big thank you to all members who contributed to the organisation of catering and venues at this tournament I would like to thank Gary Campbell and the CHDCA Umpires & Scorers Association for their efforts in ensuring local and Inter District matches are affiliated wherever possible. We are all aware what a thankless task umpiring can be at times. I would also like to express my apologies for the poor Match Committee response during the season and thank the Umpires for their patience during this transitional period.

Some substantial changes have been made to our current ByLaws effecting team nominations and club affiliation. We hope these ByLaw changes make a positive differenc e to what has been an ongoing and serious issue with our competition structure.

Congratulations to all of our individual award winners and to Sawtell Cricket Club for the CHDCA First Grade Premiership and the Club Championship. Last of all I would like to wish the incoming committee all the best for the upcoming season 2016- 17 and hope to see CHDCA continue to prosper into the future.

Kind Regards

Steve Meakins President CHDCA

COFFS HARBOUR DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES AND SCORERS ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: 2015 – 2016

I am honoured to have been elected, by my fellow umpires, to a second term as President.

To my committee, congratulations on an excellent effort throughout this season – Vice President Graham DOUST, Secretary Matthew CAMPBELL, Treasurer Paul HARRIS – your time, effort, and expertise have been greatly appreciated by all fellow umpires. To ALL umpires: very well done – without your continued dedication, commitment, enthusiasm, and expertise, our great game would be much the poorer; I hope to see all of us officiating in 2016 – 2017.

As cricket umpires, we are all committed to assisting, advising , and supporting cricket – in particular, on the North Coast generally, and in the Coffs Harbour District specifically. To achieve such roles we need the guidance and mutual support of the various administrative and governing cricket organisations; a speci al mention and “thank you” to the Coffs Harbour District Senior Cricket Association, and the Coffs Harbour District Junior Cricket Association for their guidance and mutual support and respect throughout this season.

Without grounds and pitches, the playing of cricket becomes difficult; well done to groundsmen, curators, players, and often parents for their efforts. Another particularly special mention: to all players – male and female, young, old and older; to parents and families; to spectators. Without you we do not have cricket administrators, cricket umpires – or, indeed, cricket. Please maintain your enthusiasm and participation. During the season, I endeavoured to appoint as many umpires to as many grades as possible; as a result, lower grade players were pleasantly surprised to see an official umpire officiating at their match; umpires have appreciated and enjoyed this rotational approach. I anticipate, with an increase in the number of umpires available, being able to expand this allocation next season.

-2-

In addition, to the local Coffs Harbour Senior and Junior Competitions, our Association continued to provide umpires for both Senior and Junior Representative matches, T/20 Competitions, social “contests”, both Primary and Secondary Schools local and inter-district matches, as well as the prestigious “State -of-Origin” Over 60 and Over 70 Annual Carnival – this season played over two days in March. A tremendous achievement from an organisation with limited resourc es and manpower!

I wish to acknowledge the sponsorship provided to our Association by the Greenhouse Tavern; the financial support, and the provision of a meeting and conference venue, was much needed – and very much appreciated. Further offers of sponsors hip would be gratefully accepted.

Umpiring is an occupation which requires regular and on -going professional and educational development, and in -service training; one source of this development and training is provided at our monthly meetings. In addition, in February, members attended an informal (and very informative) discussion session with the two appointed Sheffield Shield Umpires and their Match Official prior to the Sheffield Shield Match played in Coffs Harbour. Members also regularly attend coachin g seminars facilitated through NSWCUSA.

We cannot be complacent - we need more umpires, both male and female – please consider the opportunity and reward; come and join us.

A sad note! Our fellow umpire, and our Association Treasurer – Paul HARRIS – has in formed us that he and his wife Anne are returning to to be physically closer to their families. Paul has served cricket as an excellent and popular Umpire, a very competent Treasurer and

Administrator, a friend and mentor to all who have had the p rivilege to know him – an overall “Good Bloke”. On behalf of our cricket community, I wish Paul and Anne continued health and happiness.

To the incoming Committee – and to all members of our Association – I wish you vibrant health and happiness, and hope y ou have an enjoyable 2016 – 2017 season.

Yours in Cricket

GARY CAMPBELL

Hon President

COLOURED CLOTHING & WHITE BALLS By Phil Crofts - CHDCA Historical Committee Member and Life Member

One -day cricket (40 and 50 overs per side) arrived in Australia in the late 1960s; the first one -day international in Australia was played between Australia and England at the MCG on 5 January 1971. After some rather staid in that same period, the one -day concept took off from the beginning; when Kerry Packer took on the cricket establishment in 1977 with his World Series Cricket , one-day cricket ballooned to a whole new level. When the establishment and WSC finally sorted out their business, one -day cricket had moved from the cricket periphery to centre -stage. We had the white ball and coloured clothing, there were no field restrictions, and the was actually the picket fence. But the concept was proving a money- spinner, and by the early 1980s, everyone wanted a piece of the one -day ‘pie’. Most especially the rural and regional areas of Australia, and Coffs Harbour was no different. Yes, there had been one WSC match at Coffs in 1979, but because of poor weather in the lead up, that match had never really captured local imagination.

That all changed when NSW took on the touring Sri Lankan team at Brelsford Park on 21 January 1990. It was a perfect summer day, in peak school holiday time, and the ground was packed to see NSW score a comfortable win over the Sri Lankan team on their second Aussie tour. NSW won the toss (that’s a story in itself), and they were on the front foo t from the start. Opener Phil Emery 31 was part of a half -century opening stand, and then fellow opener Steve Small 101 and Trevor Bayliss 97no put on a 123 run stand that Sri Lanka never recovered from. NSW finished with 4 for 262, and the Sri Lankan reply of 181 all out was never a serious challenge. MAR Samarasekera led with 44 and PA de Silva 43, but a delightful spell from Greg Matthews 4 for 22 from his 10 overs, backed up by Mark

O’Neill’s 3 for 36, was enough to steer NSW home. That Sri Lankan tour was noteworthy for several reasons. They had only played their first test v Australia in 1983, so they were still the ‘new boys on the block’. With the ACB in a powerful position, and Ansett Airlines influential, Sri Lanka played a tour that included more regional and rural venues than ever before (and never since), many of those games being one -day affairs. And the team was captained by a young Arjuna Ranatunga, who in later years became such a thorn under the skin of many of the Aussies. Sadly the weath er curtailed the next big one-day game, when NSW met New Zealand at the International Stadium on 29 October 1997. With only Corey Richards 66 making any sort of impression, NSW was limited to 156 (49 overs), as a young Daniel Vettori 3 for 27 announced himself. But with NZ 3 for 68 after 14.2 overs and seemingly in charge, rain brought a premature end. So when the announcement came that an ING fixture NSW v South Australia was coming to CH International Stadium, the excitement was intense. Once again it was peak school holiday time, 12 January 2002, but again it was the weather that took control. Coffs Harbour recorded its highest -ever temperature, a whopping 43.3 degrees, and the heat affected the game in so many ways.

NSW won the toss and made the fatal mistake of sending SA in to bat. In front of a smallish crowd, Nathan Bracken made early inroads for the home side, but then took over proceedings. Despite needing frequent drink breaks, he dominated the match with his better -than-a run-a-ba ll 101, finally out trying to up the tempo. His innings helped SA to a final tally of 258, while Stuart McGill’s 5 for 53 was overshadowed by how expensive it was (6.5 overs). NSW were never seriously in the hunt, losing 5 before making 50, and finally succumbing for a meek 144. Only Graham Rummans with an unbeaten 73 showed any resistance, good old Sundries was next best, and with 3 for 31 from his 10 overs showed why he was quickly -2- was next best, and Jason Gillespie with 3 for 31 from his 10 overs showed why he was quickly whisked back to international duty before the match had finished.

But it was the heat that was the biggest player on the day. After his 2 -and-a-half hour innings, Lehmann finished in CH Hospital that night, on an intravenous drip, as medical staff worked tirelessly to treat his dehydration and heat exhaustion. Intense bushfires in the Nana Glen district underlined just how severe the heat had been. If NSW supporters were hoping to see a Blues’ revival next time, they were sadly disappointed when NSW met We st Australia at the International Stadium on 19 January 2003. The Sandgropers sent NSW in to bat and were on top throughout; all their bowlers were in the wickets, led by Michael Clark’s 3 for 34, and only Mark Waugh’s 48 helped NSW to a very moderate 146, all out in the 46 th over.

West Aussie were never seriously troubled. NSW skipper Steve Waugh tried Stu McGill as an opening bowler, but to no avail, as Mike Hussey with an unbeaten 50 led WA to 3 for 147, the winning run coming in just the 35 th over. WA’s Kade Harvey, with 2 for 16 from his full 10 overs and then 24 no in partnership with Hussey, was Man of the Match.

On 14 January 2006, NSW finally managed to manufacture some excitement, when Victoria managed to just hold on for a thrilling 2 wicket win. NSW won the toss and batted, and with Phil Jacques making 37, they had a half -century opening stand. But only Matthew Phelps with 44, helped by Aaron O’Brien 26, were able to make a dent, and NSW were all out for 187, in just the 43 rd over. Cameron White and Gerard Denton with 3 wickets apiece kept Victoria on top.

And their top -order batsmen rammed home the advantage. 74 and Brad Hodge 42 had Victoria cruising at 3 for 160, until an unbelievable spell from Stuart McGill almost stole the match for NSW. McGill removed both Hussey and White, and proceeded to snavel 5 for 54 in 8.5 overs, but it was not enough. Victoria fell over the line with 8 for 188, in the 38 th over, with Hussey man of the match. The match was also notable for special mention among the men in white. Former Grafton and North Coast official Darren Goodger stood, while the match referee was Dick French. Goodger had actually been the TV official at Coffs for the 2002 game, but in 2006, he had become one of the senior members of the NSW Umpires and Scorers Association. On the other hand, French had been one of the leading Australian and international umpires in the late 1970s and 1980s, but even in his late 60s, he was still offering first -class service to the game. However, for NSW, after 4 attempts, it means they are still to win a one -day game at Coffs Harbour’s International Stadium. They do hold the honour of having won the only Sheffield Shield match held in Coffs Harbour, defeating South Australia at the Stadium earlier this year. But NSW will be hoping to ‘get the monkey off their back’ when they next appear here in a one -day fixture.

More immediately, cricket fans are preparing for a truly groundbreaking time at the Stadium in November. In not one but two full international one-day fixtures there, the Australian Southern Stars women’s team will take on South Africa as part of the 2016 Womens International Cricket Series.

Games are scheduled for 27 and 29 November, and Coffs Harbour will boast great international exposure. That will be followed up by the Big Bash warmup game v Hong Kong in December: more international exposure.

Hopefully more exciting moments in the on-going saga of one-day cricket in Coffs Harbour. Australian ODI v South Africa 2016 South African tour

District XI charges into McDonald’s Cup semis - 16th Dec 2015

A MIDDLE-ORDER fightback by Park Beach Bowling Club Colts teammates Ben Sims and Matt Rose ultimately saved the day and put Coffs Harbour into the semi-finals of the McDonald’s Country Cup. Batting first against Tweed Valley and in dire straits at 6-38, the pair went on a rescue mission, with Sims putting on 47 as dominant partner, and Rose chipped in with 23.

The District XI was all out for a modest 136 once the tail-enders made small but sweet contributions. It was almost an action replay of the victory against Macleay Valley on November 29 when Rose and Damon Rootes found runs down the order but it was not something the veteran all-rounder was keen to experience again soon. “The total was low as we were again forced onto the second ground which runs much slower,” Rose said.

“Also, give credit to Tweed’s bowling as they landed the ball right on the spot and caused an awful lot of problems. “Probably we were lucky but nothing was a fluke about Simsy’s gem of an innings. “I pushed the strike his way every chance I could and he knuckled down beautifully.”

As did the Coffs Harbour bowlers when their opportunity arrived. John Lovett and Josh Bartlett were lethal, each claiming four wickets to have the visitors all out for 125 in the 33 rd over.

Rose said the final four teams will be seeded with the next opponent and venue likely to be known before the end of the week. “On Monday I rang Cricket NSW to tell them just how proud we are of making it this far,” he said. “After finishing third last year, I reckon we’ll be ranked three or four and Tamworth is most likely to be the next hurdle.”

Coffs XI one win away from Country Cup final - 27th Dec 2015

COMEBACK KID: Craig Haworth will play in the Country Cup match. Gemima Harvey/Coffs Coast Advocate

ALMOST a year after announcing his retirement from representative cricket, Craig Haworth is back in a Coffs Harbour District XI. Arguably the competition's most distinguished rep player will be in the team to take on Parkes DCA on Tuesday at River- side Sporting Park in Tamworth. Victory will put CHDCA into the grand final of the McDonald's Country Cup against the winner of the match between Tamworth and Berry-Shoalhaven Heads.

In March, Haworth bowed out a winner after a last- minute call-up to the Interdistrict side and made easily the sporting quote of the Coffs Coast sporting year. "I was just buying a box of beer to take up for the game when I got the phone call to bring my gear," he said in typical laconic fashion.

Vice-captain Matt Rose said the squad would travel west on Monday with a full team still to be announced. "Ricky Welsh, Tyh Murphy and Brad Lewis are unavailable but Sawtell have promised replacements," Rose said. "Damon Rootes will captain the team and apart from Craig and myself as the old guard, there's an extraordinary number of up-and-comers in the side," he said. "If our old bones are slow, the young, fit kids will give us a massive advantage in the field."

Also ready to play are Jack Ireland, Josh Bartlett, Austyn Nugent and Jimi Allan (Nambucca Valley), John Lovett and Ben Sims (Park Beach Bowls Club Colts) and Ty Adams (Plantation Diggers). Rose admitted nothing was known of the opponents. "I'm pretty sure they don't know anything about us, either," he quipped. "That makes us even until we toss and after that, it's a matter of playing whatever you see in front of you. "Obviously, I'm always positive and have a good feeling this could be our chance to go all the way after finishing third last year. "Every game so far we've tried to keep the pressure down, mainly because of having so many young blokes out there, but they've all risen to the occasion and I reckon they will again." District XI bows out of McDonald’s Country Cup – 2nd Jan 2016

A Matt Rose half century wasn’t eno ugh to save the Coffs XI. Leigh Jensen/ Coffs Coast Advocate.

THE top order's failure to set a platform came back to haunt Coffs Harbour District when eliminated by Parkes in the McDonald's Country Cup semi-final played in Tamworth. Evergreen opener Matt Rose top-scored with 55 but the next three batsmen couldn't get off the ground.

While there was a slight glimmer of hope provided by the middle order and another 20 or so runs would have made it interesting, the damage had been done early. Captain Damon Rootes had an off day with the bat, scoring just one run and said having to re-start the engines so often took a toll. "Losing those wickets one after another forced us to settle and start all over and we lost the opportunity to build partnerships," he said. "The exception was Raman Phoonie, who came in just after me when we were in a bit of trouble, but he knuckled down with Rosey and almost got through to the end. "Raman is just 15 years old and played brilliantly. "If another of us had been able to support with a sizable partnership, it could have been a different story."

Rose also paid tribute to the young Plantation Diggers batsman but said he sometimes had to curb his exuberance. "A couple of times he said 'Rosey, I think I should have a go at them now' but it wasn't the time," the veteran said. "One day he'll be given his head and he'll tear the bowlers to pieces. "There are six kids under the age of 18 in this team and their day will come if we keep them together. "The experience from this trip is going to be invaluable to their careers."

Parkes District also had early hiccups but big hitting from Vince Umbers (41 ) and Jacob Harvey (52) carried them home.

Hard yakka pays off for Parkes – 29th Dec 2015 By Geoff Newling/ The Northern Daily Leader

PARKES reaped the benefit of a lot of hard work and attention to fielding detail to win their way into a McDonald’s Country Cup Final at Tamworth’s No 1 Oval today by beating Coffs Harbour in yesterday’s semi - final at Riverside 2. Chasing the 9-185 set by Coffs, Parkes finished 5-187 with four overs to spare.

While skipper Anthony Heraghty acknowledged “it was a great chase”, he thought the bowling and fieldi ng was exceptional. “Flawless really,” Heraghty said. “Everyone bowled well and the fielding was great. “But we’ve worked really hard the last three or four weeks on our fielding and bowling and it showed today.” Almost every Parkes bowler claimed a wicket.

Coffs opener Matt Rose was a shining light for the coastal side, reaching 55 before he was by Peter Yelland off Heraghty’s bowling. Ben Sims (38), Raman Phoonie (28) and Jack Ireland (24) also got going but Coffs always struggled against some tight bowling and fielding.

Yelland (20), Scott Knights (13) and Myles Smith (11) all made it into double figures but, at 4-63, Coffs had worked their way into the game thanks to some good bowling from Julian Hulbert (2-28), Josh Bartlett (1-28) and John Lovett (1-32). However, Vince Umbers (41no) and Jacob Harvey (52) produced a matchwinning 99- run stand to lead their side into a Country Cup Final. Umbers smacked seven fours while Harvey went one better, slamming seven fours and a six. Mitch Cambourn (16no) was there with Umbers at the end to celebrate.

Heraghty said the batting was a good even effort. “We started a little bit slowly but a few batsmen really stood up. “Vince and Jacob were great. It wasn’t easy to bat on but the longer you were out there the easier it got.” Unbeaten half century gifts cricketers a miracle win - 13th Jan 2016

GIVEN next to no chance of winning, Coffs Harbour pulled off the ultimate Houdini act to defeat Lower Clarence in a round of the Interdistrict cricket championship. On the night before the game, stand-in captain Matt Rose had just seven players available and as usual, called upon Park Beach Bowling Club Colts teammates to fill the gaps. Elegant batsman Ben Sims and second grade players Tony Slaviero and Lachlan Binet were among the handful to answer the call but Rose said that was just the start of the drama.

“Somehow we managed to get them all out for 116 with John Lovett and Connor McCoy taking seven wickets between them,” he said. “Then it was our turn and one disaster followed another, starting when I got out for a duck.” What followed was a procession of Coffs Harbour batsmen tramping to the middle and then doubling back to the change rooms without scoring. Rose…Pat Myles…Angus Garland…Julian Hulbert…John Lovett…all gone with the dreaded “duck egg” next to their names. “Matt Riddoch eventually made it to 15 and with 22 runs on the board, we lost three blokes straight without adding a single run,” Rose said. “Then Ben Sims arrived and everything turned round.” Sims ended the day on 58 not out and was the key factor in a miraculous escape. “I’m calling the North Coast selectors about this,” Rose added. “Ben’s been so reliable, always getting runs in the rep matches and deserves a place at the next level.”

On Feb 7, Coffs Harbour plays Clarence River at Leisure Park and victory should deliver a home grand final.

Coffs faces surprise challenger - 13th Feb 2016 A NEW team will tomorrow challenge Coffs Harbour’s place at the top of the representative cricket tree. Nambucca Valley earned its spot in tomorrow’s North Coast final at Fitzroy Oval following a dominant performance against the Lower Clarence representative side last Sunday.

The win was only Nambucca Valley’s second win in the competition in the past five years, with the first of those coming earlier in this season’s competition in a surprise vict ory against Clarence River. If anybody told you at the start of the season that Nambucca Valley would be in the North Coast final, you may have been locked up for psychiatric assessment, but the fairytale outfit is now looking for one more win upset.

Al though hot favourites to win, the Coffs Harbour outfit has promised it won’t be taking the opposition lightly.

Coffs batsmen falter in decider - 17th Feb 2016 COFFS Harbour's representative team saved its worst 'til last. Playing in the interdistrict final against Nambucca Valley on a perfect day for batting, Coffs Harbour was skittled for only 110. That final figure is flattered by the fact extras was the top scorer for the innings and an eighth wicket stand between Raman Phoonie and Julian Hulbert provided 57 runs. At one stage Coffs Harbour fell to a dismal 7-45. "They bowled well in those first 10 overs, they gave us nothing," Coffs Harbour captain Matt Rose lamented.

The Coffs Harbour team held some hopes of a miracle win after taking two early wickets with the ball but Brodie Bartlett and Justin Saker ensured Nambucca Valley claimed the interdistrict title. Rose was full of praise for an opponent that had shown remarkable improvement after failing to win a game in the past four years. "They (Nambucca) were a young team that's got better with some experience," he said. "They play together on a Saturday and it shows when they play together on Sunday. There's not many weaknesses in that team but having said that, we should've given them a better run." C.H.D.C.A INTER-DISTRICT RESULTS

T20 REPORT 2015-16 By Grant Lawler & Brendan Cunningham

After two seasons of franchise based competition, the CHDCA decided to revert to a club based competition for the 2015-16 season, to be run over the weekends of January 9 and 16 and culminating in a final between the top two teams at the International Stadium under lights.

Unfortunately issues with the new covers at the Stadium on the second weekend meant that the matches scheduled for the Stadium had to be moved back to Leisure Park.

The original draw for the T20 competition included eight teams, with two each from Diggers, Sawtell and Coffs Colts, one team from Dorrigo and a combined team from Nana Glen and Nambucca Valley.

In the week leading up to the first round, Sawtell and Colts withdrew their second teams due to difficulties in confirming player numbers in the post Christmas period, and the competition was now back to six teams in a round robin format, playing 15 overs per side matches.

After the preliminary rounds, Nana Glen/Nambucca Valley with five wins from five played were on 15 points.

Diggers and Sawtell finished equal on 11 points from 3 wins and 2 defeats each, and the calculators were running hot to determine who would line up against Nana Valley in the decider. Diggers won through and the final commenced at 7pm at Leisure Park 1.

The final was originally scheduled to be played as a 20 overs per side match however a rain delay saw the match reduced to 15 overs per side. Nana Valley won the toss and managed 8/123 at the completion of their allocated overs. Damien Elks (37) and Andrew Budd (28) combined for an opening partnership of 61. Glen Kesby (3/12) and Raman Phoonie (2/28) led the way with the ball. Alex Byrne batted positively at the top of the Diggers innings with 24 runs off 20 balls, however the threatening rain clouds returned seven overs into the Diggers innings with the team score on 4/40.

The players were unable to get back on the field and the match was declared a draw, with Nana Glen/Nambucca Valley taking out the Sommers Cup due to being undefeated throughout the preliminary games.

Looking forward to 2017 the CHDCA has decided that Twenty20 cricket will be added to the fixtures in the regular season. Points won for Twenty20 matches will count towards premiership points.

The Sommers Cup will still be awarded to the club who takes out the Twenty20 rounds. It is very pleasing to see the format enter the CHDCA in full.

Over the past few years the Sommers Cup has been supported wholeheartedly by Sommers Sportswear. Thank you John Rennie and Sommers for your support.

Selection in The Regional Plan B Big Bash is now a aim of many of CHDCA players and the past Sommers tournaments have enabled players to play this format inside our association to hone their performances. It is certainly the right time to embrace the format as an association and having a club based regular season set up is the way forward.

Thank you to every person who has helped over the past few years and we look forward to the future of the short format within our CHDCA.

The CHDCA teams will take on South Coast in a best of three T20 series at Sawtell's Richardson Park this Saturday. Game times are 10.30am and 2pm. If necessary, a third match will be played on Sunday morning. "The series is a component of the Sommers Cup T20 tournament played earlier in the year," organiser Grant Lawler said. "Our selectors have chosen a strong 23-player squad. "Both associations have picked plenty of junior talent in each side." WITH so many of the record holders not appearing, players participating in the opening day of the T20 Sommers Cup can set new marks. The third summer T20 competition will be shared between Richardson Park and the two wickets at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park, while the main arena at C.ex Coffs International Stadium will be used for next weekend’s finals. With Alec Baldwin now plying his trade in the city, the young Nambucca ba tsman’s crown of top run - maker is wide open. In 2015, Alec scored 278 runs in all matches at an average of 92.67 with a top score of 88 not out. Team-mate Jack Ireland hit the highest individual score of 95 runs as well as hitting the most sixes (12) and taking the only hat trick of the tournament. David Schutt holds the record for most wickets with nine for the 2015 series, while Finley Wilson’s bag of 5-31 provided the best bowling figures. The high team score to beat is 5-229 while the club looking to claim the dubious distinction of crumbling for the lowest total needs to be back in the pavilion with less than 87 runs on the board. Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association has decided to run the series on a club basis rather than by the franchise system. Plantation Diggers nominated two teams but it’s believed unavailability of some players may force a last minute amalgamation. Nana Glen will return to the top grade ranks for the series. Entry to all matches is free.

NANA Glen made the most of a temporary elevation to the top level of Coffs Harbour District Cricket by completing an unbeaten first weekend of T20 Sommers Cup action. The western club made its mark from the opening match, upsetting highly rated Plantation Diggers teams. However, it was no surprise when it came to giving the ball a big bash, it was the usual suspects - Sawtell and Diggers - doing their best to remove the leather from the ball. Diggers captain Alex Byrne topped the weekend scoring a not-out 77 against Dorrigo, followed by Sawtell opener Ricky Welsh who was also unbeaten in his 72 runs against Diggers. Other top scores were supplied by Sawtell's Tim Welsford (56) and Michael Oates (53) with Diggers' Connor Martin making 51. The story was similar for the bowlers. Trent Mitchell (3-17) and Daniel McGuire (3-20) did best for Sawtell. For Diggers, Amritpal Singh (3-18), Joe Willman (3-19), Billy Swan (3-20) and Jamie Arthur (3-22) were the pick of the bunch. Underdogs have their day - Nana Glen takes the trophy

20th Jan 2016

PROUD MOMENT: Brock Munro and president Scott Morgan get their hands on the coveted trophy.

GIVEN little chance of winning prior to the tournament, Nana Glen Cricket Club justified its temporary elevation to the top grade by going undefeated through the T20 Sommers Cup. A combination of mainly second grade club players supplemented by a handful of guests from Nambucca Valley, the club defeated Plantation Diggers 1 in the final and also provided the only century-maker of the two-weekend competition. Andrew Budd, more familiar to northern sporting fans as a Group 2 Rugby League representative and winger for Nambucca Heads Roosters, smashed 107 against Park Beach Bowling Club Colts in round two and was top scorer overall with 293 runs at an average of 48.83. Victory earned the first silverware for several seasons. Nana Glen took out the second grade club premiership in 2011-12 but this is the first title at the premium grade since Andrew Mainey led victory celebrations after capturing the Bill Amos Memorial Shield as first grade premiers in the summer of 2003-04. Golden oldies start with victory

23rd Sep 2015 SPIRITED: The Coffs Harbour and Gold Coast over-60s cricket teams enjoyed a tight struggle last Sunday.

THERE wasn't as much pace with the ball and the running between the wickets was a little slower but it didn't stop Coffs Harbour's inaugural over- 60s cricket team from having a good time. Last Sunday the local team assembled outside Boambee Memorial Hall to face a Gold Coast Dolphins combination at Ellem Oval. Rain delayed the start of the clash and saw the match reduced from a 40- over affair to 30 overs each team. In difficult conditions, the Coffs Harbour side put together a sound 109 with Rob Lidbetter and Kevin Walker retiring on 21 each. An aggressive innings from Laurie Newland (15) was followed by a sparkling unbroken late innings partnership by Russell Gill (17) and Rick de Ruitter (12). Gold Coast's bowling was very consistent with John Guiver leading the way with a tidy 2-17 off his six overs. Steve Allpress, Malcolm Purcell and Eric Ward all chipped in with timely wickets. The Gold Coast's innings started steadily and scoring was restricted by tight bowling with just 21 runs in total being taken off the first 12 overs bowled by de Ruitter, Gill, Barnabas Masih and Andrew Hunter. Tight bowling by John Leahy and aggressive bowling by Terry Booth put pressure on the Gold Coast's batting line-up. Gold Coast's Allan Edwards hit the ball crisply for 20 runs and Guiver played a hard-hitting innings before retiring for 20 with the game evenly poised. Purcell scored a steady 10 as the Gold Coast closed in on the Coffs' total. Coffs Harbour was able to hold the Gold Coast as they surged at the end with Walker taking two wickets, Leahy effecting a great run out with a direct hit and Graham Doust chipping in with three wickets to see the Gold Coast fall 17 runs short of the victory target. The game was played in great spirit and there was plenty of time to make friendships while sharing in the very substantial buffet lunch provided by the home team. Barnabas Masih originally put forward the concept of having an over-60s team in Coffs Harbour and now it's a reality.

Port clinches golden oldies cricket clash with a nail-biting finish

4th Nov 2015

KEEN TO PLAY: The Coffs and Hastings lads line up before battle begins in earnest.

A NAIL-BITING finish had Hastings-Port Macquarie overtake Coffs Harbour in the 38 th over to win the golden oldies cricket clash at Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park. Coffs won the toss and batted up a storm in the first 20 overs to sit pretty on 4-60. Terry Booth (27), Andrew Hunter (24) and Gary Deam (36) consolidated the run gathering and at the end of the 40 overs the Coffs run total had moved on to 154. Best of the bowlers for Hastings were Warren McWilliams (1-8), Greg Kohler (1-11) and Dave Chapman (2-17). The Hastings chase began with a vigorous 78-run partnership between McWilliams and Grant Elliot, followed by Australia over-60 representative player John O’Sha ughnesy with a quick-fire 35. Alex Rullis chimed in with 29 and Coffs were having trouble containing the run flow. The bowling tightened over the last 10 overs but Dave Chapman guided the Hastings side to victory as he took his 17 th run. New players in the Coffs team Gary Deam, Bruce Lumb and Stephen Mitchell had solid performances, and there was an outstanding first appearance by well-known veteran wicketkeeper Lawrie Renshall. “Our team was able to take a great deal out of the game,” spokesman Graham Do ust said. “A very well received lunch was provided by Park Beach Bowling Club Colts Cricket Club and all attending enjoyed a great day of fun and friendship,” Doust said. The Coffs Harbour team returns to the nets at Leisure Park today from 2.30-4pm to start training for the next encounter. New faces are always welcome to come along and enjoy a great way to improve fitness and the friendship offered.

C.H.D.C.A. Season 2015-16 Media Coverage Busy summer ahead for new cricket president - 10th Oct 2015

Sawtell’s Patty Myles bowls for Sawtell during last season’s CHDCA grand final against Plantation Diggers .

NEWLY elected Coffs Harbour District Cricket president Ricky Welsh has been busy preparing wickets for today's start to the 2015-16 season. Daughter, Maddison, was helping dad prepare Fitzroy Oval yesterday as the clock ticks down to what's going to be the busiest summer of his cricketing career.

Opening bat for premiers Sawtell and entrenched in the representative squad, Welsh took up the new administrative role when Ken Robinson retired after 15 years as the top man in the local game and sees it as a transition. "I still love playing and reckon I've got a few good years left still but you reach a stage when you feel it's time to give something back to the game," he said. "Helping develop junior cricket has been a passion but this is a new challenge and I'm looking forward to it."

Welsh will watch closely the progress of Nambucca Valley, promoted to firsts when Urunga decided to step back to concentrate on lower grades. "A lot of Urunga players live in the south and this arrangement may suit both clubs better in the long run," he said. "It won't take long to see how well Nambucca go and coming from down that way and still keeping in touch with things, they seem to have good prospects."

Young stars Jamie Bekis, Jack Ireland and Josh Bartlett will be in the ranks while father and son duo Terry and Alec Baldwin are likely to give supporters plenty to cheer about.

Nambucca opens the season against Plantation Diggers at Thistle Park while Welsh will be in action with Sawtell in the meeting with Dorrigo at Richardson Park. Park Beach Bowling Club Colts has the bye. Round one will be played over two weekends.

Mitchell's 140-run smashathon ignites 2015-16 cricket summer - 11th Oct 2015

Sawtell's Trent Mitchell opened the season with a super century when he whacked Dorrigo's bowlers all over Richardson Park. Emily Burley

FOR a batsman who'd just kicked off the Coffs Harbour District Cricket season with a one man display of fireworks, Trent Mitchell was fairly laid back about the situation.

Opening for Sawtell against Dorrigo at Richardson Park, the first man to pick up a bat this summer had his century on the board in the first session. Eventually removed on 140, Mitchell had a laconic tale to tell about how that came about.

"I just said to (Dorrigo wicketkeeper) Nathan Secomb how good their young bowler Simon Beverley had been earlier in the day and suggested he give him another go," Mitchell said. "So next thing Nathan's thrown the kid the ball and he's put one down that I turned away into the hands of Eric Moore and that was that. "By that stage I was pretty exhausted and the rest of the boys were getting runs so it didn't matter. "It was great to start the year with a bang but I have to be honest and say every delivery seemed to be on the bat and all I had to do was belt them away."

With every batsman seeing the ball as big as a soup plate, the runs flowed and the declaration came at 7-337 in the 57th over. Tyh Murphy creamed the Dorrigo bowlers to register 80 runs while new faces Richie Gallichan (30) and Tim Welsford (34) showed plenty of potential on debut. In reply, Dorrigo was 2-48 by stumps from 14 overs and unless they can build a fresh start on day two this Saturday, an innings defeat is on the cards.

Meanwhile, Nambucca Valley debuted at Thistle Park against Plantation Diggers and restricted the premiers to 155 from 64 overs. Ty Adams and Glen Kesby were equal top scorers for Diggers with 29 each while Tim Moon was Nambucca's best bowler with 2-6 including two maidens from his five over spell. Andrew Budd went for seven and Nambucca will resume at 1-28 with Jack Ireland and Brodie Bartlett in the middle.

Park Beach Bowling Club Colts has the first round bye.

Batsmen love every moment of CHDCA opening round - 18th Oct 2015

Dorrigo’s batsmen brought their A-game to Richardson Park and frustrated Sawtell in the quest for an innings victory. Claudia Jambor

A PAIR of thrillers to start the season augers well for a splendid season of Coffs Harbour District cricket. Sawtell defeated Dorrigo on the first innings at Richardson Park but the Buzzards got stuck in with the bat through two innings and scuppered any dreams of an innings victory the the home side had. Resuming on 2-48, the visitors were saved by a ripping 94 from Mathew Riddoch who fought on and on as wickets tumbled around him.

Removed for 127, Dorrigo were sent back to the middle and this time, all but a handful found runs. Andrew Ellis opened and top scored with 84 with Riddoch back to claim 30. Justin Gilbert (53) and Luke Beaumont (32) were unbeaten at the end of the day.

While a defeat is nothing to shout loud about, the men from the mountaintop are going to be a thorn in the sides of their rivals in this short 10-game series where one slip-up could prove one slip-up too many.

The trump card for the Blue Caps was new chum Tim Welsford who backed up his hand first innings batting by taking 6-43 off 19 overs in Dorrigo’s first dig.

At Thistle Park, it was a red letter day for new club Nambucca Valley who rolled premier team Plantation Diggers on their first outing. As expecte d, Diggers first innings of 155 proved too hard to defend and on a batsman’s paradise, Nambucca wound up on 4-240. The big guns at the top of the order were on fire. Jack Ireland topped the innings with 77 and Jamie Bekis put 53 on the board. Dane Luffman (35) and Brodie Bartlett (34) the not out men.

One thing Diggers can boast about was the excellence in the field with a mere four extras handed away across 50 overs. Sawtell can make the same boast with 11 extras in their 83 overs bowled whereas Dorrigo handed away 28 extras in their only period in the field.

Colts’ friendly finger pointed directly at Diggers opponent - 21st Nov 2015

ON THE BALL: Having Matt Francis find form with the bat leaves his skipper very impressed. Leigh Jensen

PARK Beach Bowls Club Colts captain Matt Rose may seem to "have it in" for a certain opponent in today's clash with premiers Plantation Diggers. "The quicker we see the back of Russell Gardner, the happier I'll be," he freely admits. "In this round last year, he came up with an unbeaten century and there's no way I want him hanging around for too long." Rose made his comments with tongue firmly in cheek and left no doubt how much he respects the classy Diggers all-rounder. "Diggers may have have enormous batting depth but I don't think Russell gets the credit he's entitled to," he said. "Look at all their big partnerships and he seems to figure in there, whether he's playing a support role or getting stuck in to blunt the ball. "I rate him the bloke who holds it together and we have to go after him early."

The match will be played on somewhat unfamiliar territory after a switch to the second field at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park after the main wicket was damaged by vandalism. Putting on his hat as association treasurer, Rose expressed disgust at the rash of damage that's been done to the grounds. "It looks like some idiot rode a horse across Brelsford Park and it's out of action as well," he said. "What with the rain and the wicket damage, it's been an expensive start to the season."

Rose is always happy to crack jokes about the game he loves but makes time for serious business. "Colts may be the team for aging warriors but as this is a one-day game, it sort of brings Diggers back to the field a bit. "While they have proven themselves and on paper have better depth, limited overs will suit our style and we shouldn't be written off," Rose said. Just make sure a player named Gardner gets an early break from the hot sun.

Bailey the bowler who doesn’t miss opportunity’s knock - 22nd Nov 2015

Trevor Bailey smashed through Colts top order to set up the win for Diggers. Leigh Jensen

PLANTATION Diggers ignored the pre-match gee-up by rival skipper Matt Rose to open their account for the cricketing summer. Rose boldly nominated Russell Gardner as the danger man to his Park Beach Bowling Club Colts side but the stylish all-rounder didn't make an appearance.

Instead it was unheralded second grade bowler Trevor Bailey who seized the opportunity of promotion to the premiers' top grade and he rattled Colts from the outset. Bailey removed opener Billy Carroll before that man could score and then collected the scalps of Kyle Gallen (5) and Tim Parkins (2). From five overs, Bailey's figures were 3-18 while Ethan Atkinson will look back on his first-grade debut with pride after bagging four batsmen.

Rose contributed 27 and veteran bowler Matt Francis continued his rejuvenated batting form to put on 24 but it wasn't enough. Colts were skittled for 99 in the 36th over and Diggers came out to pass that total for the loss of six wickets. Damon Rootes was not out on 40.

At Thistle Park, Nambucca Valley again proved their worth by rolling Dorrigo. The mountain men batted first to reach 147 but Nambucca had their measure by the 38th over, reaching 6-148 with Jamie Bekis ending the day not out with another 70 runs to add to his escalating aggregate. Sawtell had the bye. Bats will do much crossing at Fitzroy - 28th Nov 2015

Diggers’ bat Raj Sandhu is surrounded by blue caps in the last meeting with Sawtell. Leigh Jensen

EXPECT batting flamboyance when Plantation Diggers and Sawtell meet today in a limited overs match at Fitzroy Oval. Sawtell has held the reputation of kings of one-day cricket for years but every one of its rivals now acknowledges Diggers has the longest batting tail in the trade.

If there's a heatwave, winning the toss and getting runs quickly will be ultra-important, and Diggers captain Alex Byrne believes he has an extra factor in his favour. That would be a bowling "discovery" named Trevor Bailey, who came out of nowhere seven days back to smash Park Beach Bowling Club Colts' top three batsmen. "Trevor is older and has a great cricket brain at a time when I believe the bowling depth indicates inexperience across the competition," Byrne said. "I had a yarn to (rival captain) Dave Angus and I came away with an idea there's going to be a bit of excitement from the batsmen. "If that occurs, I think we can meet whatever challenge Sawtell throw up and have the bowling smarts to do it. "And I never doubt we can bat for a big score."

Angus expects his team will stand side by side with Sawtell in a tribute to the one-year anniversary of the passing of Phillip Hughes, a member of the Blue Caps' 2004-05 premiership winning side.

Then, the battle will be on again. "Again, after talking with Dave, it's safe to say our two clubs are probably around the same level at the moment due to the way the standard seems to have flattened out. "Nambucca are unbeaten and the form side, so they'll probably remain favourites for as long as they keep winning. "Sawtell and us are just behind them and then it's Colts and Dorrigo on a par and able to catch you out if you're not on your game. "At least so far as batting is concerned. "As Trevor showed last week, bowlers can spring a surprise and that is all part of why this season is already so interesting."

Byrne confirmed Russell Gardner had retired following a string of injuries that meant he only appeared in the opening round, saying the loss would take some time to overcome.

In today's other match, Colts and Nambucca Valley meet at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park while Dorrigo has the bye.

Byrne sizzles as opening batsman - 2nd Dec 2015

Captain Alex Byrne led by example with a century for Diggers. Leigh Jensen

A CENTURY by skipper Alex Byrne was only part of the equation when Plantation Diggers edged out Sawtell in the grand final replay at Fitzroy Oval. Byrne belted 103 and figured in a 105-run opening stand with Glen Kesby who scored 43.

“I think Glen will cont inue in the opening role from now on which brings things full circle,” Byrne said. “He batted down as far as 10 last year but I always thought he was exactly what we needed early. “When I asked him to start he was a bit reluctant but a great score like t hat really helped the cause.” Diggers batted to 8/227 which surprised the captain. “The ball got very wet very early which gave me a life on a caught and bowled chance,” Byrne said. “Conditions certainly helped us, particularly when the rain eased later when Sawtell came out.”

Stylish batsman Tyh Murphy almost stole the game with a terrific 79 and Richie Gallichan produced 54 before being run out. Sawtell’s luck finally ran out with the Blue Caps still 26 runs short of success.

Nambucca Valley remain unbeaten after rolling Park Beach Bowling Club Colts who made an even 100 in their dig. As usual Colts captain Matt Rose found a positive in his team. “If Jared Baldwin hadn’t taken five or six wickets we could have won,” he laughed.

“Seriously we managed t o get them five wickets down before they overtook us which was one of our best efforts in the field for a long time.”

Clubs creating their own kind of history - 5th Dec 2015

Damon Rootes is on the crest of a batting wave and a big score beckons. Leigh Jensen

THERE’S anticipation today’s meeting of Plantation Diggers and Nambucca Valley promises a standard of cricket more suited to a tense season decider. Nobody is yet making an early (and possibly rash) suggestion of “a grand final dress rehearsal” but there’s no risk these two sides are in the process of creating some personal history.

The premiers host the first-year hotshots at Fitzroy Oval, with Diggers still stinging from their opening round defeat and captain Alex Byrne willing to make a stunning admission. “We deserved to be beaten the first time because we took them far too lightly,” he said. “There’s no way we’ll make that mistake again and the boys will be very cautious and treat them with the respect they deserve.”

Fresh from a personal century and handy scores from teammates against Sawtell, Byrne feels he’s already close to settling on the line-up that will defend the premiership when play resumes in the new- year.

For t he penultimate round of 2015, he feels certain today’s opponents are also at that stage. “They’ve been cruising along and haven’t been beaten and are making runs fairly easy,” Byrne said. “It’s going to be a good opportunity to look at them up close and see what we can also learn.”

In the other match, Sawtell have an important engagement at Rowe Oval in the visit to Dorrigo. Their form has been a little inconsistent and beating the team that’s had something of a hoodoo over them at the worst possible time has to be a priority.

Nambucca coach has team in box seat -12th Dec 2015

COFFS Harbour District cricket has today reached the halfway point in the season and ladder leader Nambucca Valley has a golden opportunity to give rivals plenty to ponder during the holiday break.

Hosting third-placed Sawtell at Thistle Park, Nambucca coach Terry Baldwin said his young charges won't feel any nerves taking on the 'kings' of limited overs cricket. "Forget any ideas about inexperience - their youth and athleticism makes them ideal for a one-day game," Baldwin said. "How well they perform in the field has been a huge plus so far and I can't see that changing. "I just sit there at first slip and see them bouncing around the ground and it's pretty exciting to watch." Baldwin said last weekend's first loss to Plantation Diggers did no harm and was not unexpected. "We were a little down in strength in the top of the batting last Saturday but things picked up at the tail. "Everybody's back for Sawtell, so a win would be a nice way to head to the new year."

Park Beach Bowling Club Colts put their entire season on the line in the visit to Dorrigo. Still looking for a win, another loss will leave the club stranded at the bottom of the ladder and all but consolidate a place for the Buzzards in the finals. Diggers have the luxury of sitting back to see what transpires and will celebrate their annual Christmas party tonight at the Planto from 6pm. The season resumes on January 23, with just three rounds left before the finals.

Andrews slaughters Colts line -up - 24th Dec 2015

DEVASTATING FORM: The eight-over comeback by Ben Andrews helped shatter PBBC Colts. Leigh Jensen

NINE months after last wearing a blue cricket cap into battle, Sawtell all-rounder Ben Andrews showed there was no rust in his bowling arm with a devastating spell against Park Beach Bowling Club Colts.

No cricket was scheduled on the weekend but Coffs Harbour District administrators decided to play the washed-out third round matches and the Colts lads must have wished they were any place other than Richardson Park. The visitors won the toss and made the unfortunate choice of first use of the middle.

With Andrews at full throttle and Daniel Maguire working from the other end, it was all over for Colts inside 11 overs with just 35 runs on the board. Andrews took 6-17 from eight overs including two maidens, and Maguire finished with 4-17 from seven overs, also with two maidens.

It’s the second time in two seasons Sawtell has carried out such a slaughter of the batsmen after bowling out Dorrigo for 29 runs on October 18, 2 014. “I am a very happy president to see one of the Blue Caps’ favourite sons return to the cricket field,” Rod Buckle said. “Was Ben a bit rusty after not bowling since the grand final in March?” Buckle said. “Well, it seems not and I think all the ot her clubs will be feeling a little less comfortable knowing we have Benny back and raring to go,” he said. “It’s very close at the top but with the return of Tim Welsford also expected after Christmas, we are comfortable with how things are sitting at the moment.”

Sawtell lost two wickets in the run chase and claimed honours in the 14th over with the board reading 2-36.

Plantation Diggers batted first for 170 on the visit to Dorrigo with Ramna Phoonie ending the session 58 not out. Andrew Ellis toiled manfully to claim figures of 4-40 with three maidens in his nine-over spell. Dorrigo fell 36 runs short after Ty Adams ripped in to claim 5-26. For the second straight week Simon Donald led the resistance and top-scored on 49 for the home side.

Gardner’s comeback is an ace up skipper’s sleeve - 30th Jan 2016

The meeting of Diggers and Colts will help sort out the minor premiership puzzle. Gemima Harvey

EVERY top sportsman is entitled to at least a couple of "retirements" and now Plantation Diggers' fine all-rounder Russell Gardner is poised to return from his first temporary absence. Mounting injuries forced the star player to pull the plug just one match into the season but his skipper Alex Byrne was thrilled at the change of heart. "No doubt he'll be a bit rusty but somebody of his talent and experience will give us a great lift in confidence with two games remaining before the real business starts," Byrne said.

With two two-day rounds to play, any of three clubs can win the minor premier- ship and by the same token, one loss by Diggers, Sawtell or Nambucca Valley can take away the advantage of a top-two finish and a second bite of the cherry.

Byrne's plan is to get the better of Park Beach Bowling Club Colts this fortnight and then shake up Sawtell over the next two weeks in February. He has the ammunition to do it. CHDCA XI representative skipper Damon Rootes looks like being available for the rest of the summer and Raman Phoonie is emerging as a young man with rare talent. "Hard to believe but Raman hasn't celebrated his 16th birthday, yet he's been taking on opponents with so much more experience and doing so well," Byrne said. "Mixing it with blokes who know how to play the game well is helping his develop- ment in so many ways and not only is it good for the club, it's great for Raman's later career prospects if he chooses to go on with it," he said.

Diggers and Colts meet at Fitzroy Oval, and Dorrigo hosts Nambucca Valley at Rowe Oval.

Sawtell has the bye.

Diggers to honour Meakins’ milestone - 6th Feb 2016

MILESTONE MAN: Club stalwart Steve Meakins will be playing his 300th grade game for Plantation Diggers this afternoon. Leigh Jensen

FOR a quarter of a century the name Stephen Meakins has been synonymous with Diggers. Today all of those years of making runs and keeping wickets (and even a rare bowl) will see Meakins play his 300th grade match for the club when he walks out to bat at Fitzroy Oval.

Plantation Diggers captain Alex Byrne said it's a milestone richly deserved for a man he describes as the backbone of the club. "I'm sure if he wasn't there, things club-wise wouldn't run as well without him," he said. "It's a little bit ridiculous the amount of work that he does behind the scenes."

While invaluable off the field, Byrne said Meakins' experience sets a great example for the younger players in the team. "He has a calming influence. He doesn't say a lot but he doesn't get frazzled by anything," the captain said.

Already leading by 84 runs with two wickets in hand, Diggers will be aiming for maximum points today against a Colts line-up it dismissed for only 62 last week. "If we get the outright I think it's a good chance to keep the minor premiership," Byrne said. "I think for us to lose the minor premiership we will need to be outrighted by Sawtell the following week."

The other first grade match this afternoon sees Nambucca Valley playing at Dorrigo.

Sawtell is 18 runs from minor premiership - 20th Feb 2016

ICE MAN: Ricky Welsh has been a mainstay of the Sawtell run chase so far. Gemima Harvey

FOR Sawtell the minor premiership could be only 18 runs away. When play resumes at Richardson Park this afternoon, Sawtell need to only pass a modest Plantation Diggers total in a top of the table clash. With only four wickets in hand though, the chase is far from a fait accompli.

Sawtell captain David Angus-Crouch is under no illusion about how hard the opposition will make it for them to get the required runs. "It will be a tough 18 runs I think," Angus-Crouch said. "Having said that, we've still got a few good batsmen still in the sheds if they're needed," he said. "Brad Lewis is still to come and he usually bats at four or five, Richie Gallichan usually bats at three and then there's Dan Maguire, he's no mug with the bat either."

Angus-Crouch will walk out to bat at the start of play alongside opener Ricky Welsh whose calm manner may make him just the man for such a high-stakes occasion. The winner should win the minor premiership and hosting rights for the major semi final. The loser will probably slip to third. What could throw a spanner in that equation is Nambucca Valley having a big day with the ball. If the southerners can claim 20 Coffs Colts scalps this afternoon to earn an outright victory, the major semi will be played in Macksville. D-Day for Diggers in big game at Heads - 12th Mar 2016

WINNING the toss against Nambucca Valley at Thistle Park would be a good start for Plantation Diggers captain Alex Byrne in today's preliminary final. Byrne considers his home track Fitzroy Oval the only venue where bowling first is the usual option and if the coin falls his way, he's calling on his batsmen to show the way.

"As an opener it's important that I'm one who leads from the front, to make sure we get through to face Sawtell in the big one next week," he said. Three possible opening partners are being considered - big match hero Steve Meakins, big hitting Glen Kesby or dogged Ty Adams - with the added advantage of an in-form middle order.

"Damon Rootes can also open and he's going great with an unbeaten half century last week but I'm inclined at this stage to leave him at No 4 where he's been dominating in partnership with Raman (Phoonie). "Raman is very young but very cool and handles pressure beautifully. "The key is being in control well into the second day which also means a big effort in the field, chasing down runs and getting the catches."

Vice-captain Rootes finished last week's semi final against Colts on 72 not out and wishes in hindsight the match had gone into the second day. "Nothing like match practice and it beats batting in the nets every time because the bowler up the other end really means business and you have to handle it," he said.

Of the Nambucca opponents, he picked out representative team mate Jack Ireland as the likely danger man. "When Jack comes out to bat you can tell by his demeanour the frame of mind he's in and if he means business," Rootes said. "He's one player who can turn a game around, particularly if he gets good partnerships going. "To give ourselves the best chance of winning, we have to wreck every partnership they try to create."

Meakins man of the moment as Diggers reach cricket decider - 13th Mar 2016

Veterans Angus Garland (left) and Steve Meakins will play side by side for Plantation Diggers in another grand final next weekend. Claudia Jambor

IT'S WAS only by the skin of their teeth but Plantation Diggers made it through to next weekend's Coffs Harbour District Cricket grand final following a heart-stopping win over Nambucca Valley. Club legend Steve Meakins was again the man of the moment. An unbeaten half century saved Diggers after it looked almost certain the plucky young Nambucca side had their measure.

At tea, Diggers were 8-118 and in desperate trouble. Before the match, captain Alex Byrne took a gamble and dropped Meakins from opener to a lower position in the batting order. "If we get into trouble, if anybody can put something together, it's Meako," Byrne predicted as if gazing into a crystal ball. Aided by Glen Kesby, the veteran batsman scored 52 not out including the winning runs. It could have been different. He was dropped early in his innings ... and the rest is history. "Not bad for an old bloke," Meakins quipped.

Next Saturday, the opponents are the formidable Sawtell Blue Caps at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park.

Diggers hold the upper hand in grand final - 19th Mar 2016

LEADING FROM THE FRONT: Plantation Diggers captain Alex Byrne shone with the bat making 89 on the opening day of the CHDCA grand final. Leigh Jensen

PLANTATION Diggers have set a formidable target for Sawtell to chase down tomorrow in the Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association grand final. Led by captain and opening batsman Alex Byrne, Diggers were dismissed for 234 shortly before stumps on the opening day. Byrne made 89 to set a platform for a large total as he shared half-century stands with teenaged opener Ty Adams and veteran batsman Gus Garland.

In fact when the Diggers total had reached 1-120, the imagined final total in the pavillion would've been much more than 234. Especially when the fact the pitch at Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park was extremely good for batting is taken into account. It was Tim Welsford who helped drag Sawtell back into the contest when he claimed the scalps of Garland, Damon Rootes, Byrne and Steve Meakins to bring the reigning premier back to 5-153.

It was a patient unbeaten 55 from Raman Phoonie and a late order contribution by Jamie Arthur that pushed Diggers to its strong position. Sawtell had to face one over before stumps which Dan Maguire survived.

Sawtell return to the top of the cricketing tree - 20th Mar 2016

Sawtell's Trent Dierick was a standout at the 2015/16 CHDCA first grade premiership. David Barwell

THERE comes a time in most big matches when the result is in the balance that the victor is decided by those who choose to step up and take on the challenge. Sawtell was 6- 161 and still requiring another 74 runs to reach the target set by Plantation Diggers if it was to win the CHDCA grand final. It was at this point Trent Dierick and Michael Oates combined for a match winning partnership that sent Sawtell on its way to premiership glory.

With Tim Weslford laying the platform early in the innings in his man of the match performance (50 and 4-81), the Blue Caps were making a good fist of their run chase but wickets kept falling at regular intervals to keep Diggers' nose in front. Dierick (68 not out) and Oates (42) put on 70 runs together and when their partnership was finally broken, Sawtell only needed another four runs.

Winning captain Dave Angus was ecstatic with the result. "Tim Welsford was exceptional with the ball and the bat. Oates and Trent Dierick at the end just killed it. The game changes with those two boys," Angus said. Angus was confident his team could chase the down the imposing target but knew it would take a great effort to do so. "We were a bit unlucky on Saturday. We didn't take our chances when they came and Byrne and Raman batted well," he said. "We knew we had to hang in there and knew we had to bat well today. If we batted well today we would win."

This match represented the fifth consecutive summer that Sawtell and Diggers faced off in the first-grade grand final. Prior to this weekend the ledger stood at two win apiece. Today's win gives Sawtell the edge in the rivalry. "The rivalry is very fierce on the field but after the game it's always good to have a beer with them (Diggers) but it's very competitive on the field," Angus said. Future Blues have a big win - 28th Nov 2015

WELL DONE: Gurinder Sandhu is congratulated by his NSW teammates after taking a wicket. Trevor Veale

WHILE most of the talk post match was his record- breaking unbeaten triple century, Daniel Hughes believes most of the credit for his team's victory at C.ex Coffs International Stadium can be attributed to the bowlers on the first day.

The captain of the New South Wales Futures League team said dismissing before the tea break on the opening day's play for only 185 gave the batsmen a chance to put the Blues in an impregnable position.

"I always thought that 185 was never enough on that wicket," Hughes said. Hughes said the spell from leg- spinner Will Somerville, which tore through the middle order, set up the win. "To have them 2-100 on the first day going into lunch, I thought it was going to be hard work with their two best players in. "Then Will Somerville come out just after lunch and bowled beautifully, got those five wickets and it was exactly what we needed on a flat wicket," he said. "He actually got a bit of turn and bounce on day one which was surprising but hats off to him, he bowled fantastic."

Cashing in on the opportunity presented, the Blues set about amassing a large total that would only leave Tasmania hopes of batting out a draw. Aside from Hughes' memorable 300 not out, contributions from (70) and Ryan Gibson (92) ensured the NSW XI kept its foot on the opponent's throat. On a wicket that was friendly to the batsmen, Hughes combined for a 135 run stand with Larkin and a 98 run partnership with Phil Wells (43), before a 238 run stand with Gibson sent the score toward the 500 mark.

Knowing how good the pitch was for batting, Hughes knew dismissing Tasmania a second time would be hard work. "The wicket's very slow and most of the dismissals are caught in front of the wicket or LBW and bowled. "You just try and bowl straight and bring the LBs and bowleds and caught in front of the wickets into play," he said.

Tasmania batted patiently for more than 100 overs, before a late collapse sealed victory for the home team by an innings and 81 runs. A century by opening batsman Caleb Jewell, with strong support from Dom Michael (67) and Trent Keep (47), saw the batting team get past the second new ball and gave the Tigers hopes at lunch on the final day that it might be able to secure a draw.

That was until and Josh Lalor combined to rip through the lower order.

HISTORY managed to repeat itself at C.ex Coffs International Stadium when the scoreboard showed a batsman called Lehmann with a century next to his name. Jake Lehmann scored an impressive 122 for South Australia on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales. That feat emulated that of his father, Darren, who also made a century on the same ground back in January 2002.

"The old man actually texted me this morning saying 'the last time I played at Coffs Harbour I got 100', so my reply was 'I will get one for you if we bat'," the younger Lehmann said. "And luckily enough it happened, so it's quite funny how it played out. "It is always good to do something for the team, and to get that 100 and keep us in the game." Jake's runs came under pressure as well. When he walked to the crease the Redbacks were 3-59 and things weren't looking much better when the fifth wicket fell with the score on 123. The 23 year-old combined with wicketkeeper for a century stand before receiving additional support from tailender Cameron Valente to help push South Australia's total to 298.

In reply NSW was 1-31 at stumps losing opener Ed Cowan to former Coffs Harbour cricketer Joe Mennie who looked dangerous with the new ball. Play on the second day resumes at 10am.

SOUTH Australia is in a strong position after two days of the Sheffield Shield clash against NSW and a lot of the thanks can go to homecoming seam bowler Joe Mennie.

Having played in Coffs Harbour as a teenager with Diggers Ex- Services and Northern Districts, Mennie performed strongly with the ball in front of friends and family, including his parents who still live in Mullaway. Mennie took 4-52 to extend his season tally to a competition-high 35 scalps, while claimed 4-48. NSW was dismissed for 211. A deficit of 87 runs that has been extended to 151 as the Redbacks' top order reached 1-64 at stumps.

At the start of play the Blues had hopes of batting South Australia out of the match after the Redbacks posted 298 in the first innings. The NSW hopes were dashed in the first session when five wickets were lost including the crucial scalp of captain Nic Maddinson on the stroke of lunch.

Mennie said what the South Australian bowling attack lacks in sheer pace, it more than makes up for with old- fashioned line and length bowling that applies constant pressure to the opposition. "We don't have blokes that are going to blast people out," Mennie said. "We know our job, and what we need to do. "They (NSW) have a very attacking top order, and our plan was pretty basic - to keep it dry and make them play good shots off good balls." The seam bowler admitted taking four wickets at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium put a smile on his face. "It is always nice to come back home. To play in front of family and friends is great, and to take wickets is a bonus," he said.

Blues stun Redbacks with come from behind Shield victory - 28th Feb 2016

NSW Blues batsman Ben Rohrer brings up his century in the Sheffield Shield win over South Australia in Coffs Harbour. Greg White

EVEN their most ardent supporters wouldn't have given the NSW Blues much chance of scoring the 265 runs needed in their second innings to beat South Australia in the first Sheffield Shield match held in Coffs Harbour. Especially after the loss of Daniel Hughes (1) and (9) in the first nine overs.

But then something clicked in the Blues' batsmen and partnerships began to form until the best of them all came together. Ben Rohrer appeared and eventually linked up with Trent Copeland. By stumps on the third day, they'd driven the total to 5-178 and suddenly that cloud overhead didn't look as daunting any more.

On Sunday morning, Rohrer resumed on 62 while Copeland had seven runs against his name. Over the next two hours the pair played canny cricket by picking the eyes out of the Redbacks' deliveries and left the dangerous stuff alone. Once Rohrer reached 90, Copeland chanced his arm and quickly drove the score along.

A mighty cheer went up when Rohrer reached triple figures by taking a boundary off and a handful of deliveries later, punched two runs off the same bowler to claim victory by five wickets. "I think our best partnership in the first innings was around 60 and we knew that wasn't good enough," the century-maker said.

"On Saturday, I was able to put on some good numbers with Ryan Carters and of course, a hundred plus with Trent. "Once we got past 60 overs, the win became a distinct possibility, so we talked each other through it and concentrated on 10 runs at a time."

While overjoyed at how well the final stages had gone, Rohrer felt all the hard work was done on day three. "It set everything up for us. "While we nicked a few and had some hiccups along the way, doing well on Saturday afternoon was the deciding factor."
