HORNSBY KU-RING-GAI & HILLS DISTRICT ASSOCIATION INC 89th ANNUAL REPORT FOR SEASON 2014-15

1 THE PATHWAY THROUGH A LIFETIME OF CRICKET

Most cricketers start their playing career at an early age in the backyard with “Test Matches” against Mum, Dad or their siblings. Playing rules are simple – a boundary four Thank you to our Sponsors into the rose bushes, but over the fence into the neighbour’s yard is six and out, plus having to go and recover the ball! All Clubs, members and associates are encouraged to Just as the child starts his/her formal education at kindergarten level, Kanga (or, as it has support the products and/or services provided by our been re-badged over the years for marketing purposes, Milo Cricket and In2Cricket) is the kindergarten of a club which, like the school system, is the first step in the pathway various sponsors that takes the child to a possible lifetime of involvement in and enjoyment from the game. At that age, children and their parents are reluctant to move straight into competitive hardball cricket, but are looking for an introductory non-competitive skills and fun based structured program to introduce them to the present day game.

This starting platform allows development of hand/eye co-ordination and cricket skills but importantly sees the child become active and socialising in a team/group environment. It also gives mums, dads and even grandparents an opportunity to participate and be involved in the activity with their children and thus build stronger family relationships – and, for the club, provides a source of parent volunteers in the future as the child advances through the junior age groups.

There is no such thing as a “good” or “bad” Kanga player and this concept can lead to it becoming part of a club’s culture with the possible adoption of a “participation over results” policy that embraces the aim of giving equal opportunity to every player within each team and age group.

As the child moves through primary and secondary levels at school (years 1 to 12), so too he/she advances from Kanga through the junior age groups from Under 8 to Under 16 gaining knowledge and further skills, forming lasting friendships with fellow teammates as well as an appreciation of the meaning of the phrase “The Spirit of Cricket” which would hold them in good stead in their life outside the cricket arena. At the same time, they might test their ability and acquired skills against others of similar age beyond their normal weekly competition game by becoming available for selection in their Association Representative teams.

Having reached the age of 16, the player graduates to the equivalent of tertiary education level – Seniors where, like education, rankings start to be made on ability. After many continuous years of cricketing in this area, the player is entitled to be known as a Graduate of the School of Hard Knocks in Cricket and, as an Alumni, to play with similar HK&HDCA Representative Sponsors age players in Over 40’s “Masters” or Over 50’s “Classics” matches. Upon retirement from active play, the player, by then a senior in both age and experience, might become an umpire!

A worthy lifetime spent walking along the pathway of cricket.

3 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT’S REPORT – 2014 / 15 SEASON

The 2014 / 15 season was another very successful and enjoyable season for the HK&HDCA. Once again our junior team numbers bucked the trend as we enjoyed another spike to a massive total of 127 teams. It is pleasing to see that this boost in player numbers was mostly in the non- competitive, early age groups of U/8s to U/10s where we had our highest ever number of teams at 61. This means our Association should continue to enjoy these healthy junior player numbers coming through the system for many years to come.

It is also pleasing to see those clubs that in recent years, have put in the hard work to establish their grassroots cricket, by starting a Milo In2Cricket centre. Four clubs that started centres over the last two or three seasons and are now enjoying the push through with graduating junior teams. Soon they will feel the additional benefits with an injection to their senior teams through graduating juniors and their hard work will really start to pay dividends.

One area where only now the HK&HDCA is striving to do better is with our girl cricket offering. I was very excited that this season we took the unprecedented step of appointing our first Girls Development Officer, Edwina Chappel. Throughout the season she contacted many of our clubs with the objective to work closely with their Milo In2Cricket co-ordinators and help more girls come through the system and up to juniors, as well as develop a clear pathway for any girls wishing to go further in the sport of cricket. Last season Edwina also worked hard to sign up a major sponsor for the HK&HDCA girls program, and with Tim Inman from the Hornsby Branch of the Commonwealth Bank, a partnership has been developed. They have been working with local primary schools on a girls PSSA school cricket competition for term four of 2015.

Congratulations to Kenthurst Upper Hills CC who, for the second successive season, secured the junior Club Championship. Last season Kenthurst UH failed to win a junior Premiership but this time they took out two, becoming Premiers in both the U/14s and U/13s competitions.

Congratulations to the other 2014 / 15 junior competition Premiers especially Pennant Hills (U/16 Premiers) and Thornleigh (U/12 Premiers) who represent two of our smaller clubs. A special mention also to the Kissing Point Red U/15 team who won their Premiership from fourth position and Hornsby District U/11s who went through 2014 / 15 undefeated.

In our senior competitions early in the season we completed the five senior T20 competitions with just two clubs with teams crowned Premiers. Congratulations to the Sydney Lions Club who completed a club sweep with Premierships in 2nd, 3rd & 4th grade. In fact none of their teams lost any of the 11 matches they competed in which is an incredible achievement. Other Premiers were from the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook club with the bookends – 1st and 5th grades.

In our regular Saturday afternoon competitions WPHC retained their A grade Premiership when they thrashed Berowra in the Final. Berowra in fact were the team to beat for the greater majority of the season and undefeated until West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook beat them in the last round to snatch the Minor Premiership.

West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook’s win in A grade completed four consecutive A grade premierships to that club. They really picked up where Asquith Rugby League CC left off after they won six in a row before the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook started in 2011 / 12.

West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook had a fantastic season across the senior grades, along with their top grade Premiership they took our Kookaburra Cup (A2), B2 and the Sunday Comp.

At Junior Representative level it was a massive ask of our Reps and their dedicated coaches, managers and committee, to repeat their past two year’s extraordinary achievements in the NSW District Cricket Association Shield competitions (Shell Shield winners 12/13 & 13/14 – awarded for best performing Association). It seemed other Associations significantly lifted their game against the HK&HDCA Shield teams and we just could not win enough of those close games. The Shell Shield did not travel far going to our neighbours North Shore.

2 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT’S REPORT – 2014 / 15 SEASON: Continued

We did return some very strong performances across the age groups including qualifying for the semi-finals in Weblin (U/15) and Gee (U/13).

To all involved our Representative teams, please know that your performances are closely followed on match day by many across our Association. I constantly find myself checking Association the Facebook page and website, MyCricket, as well as swapping a number of text messages with our Rep. Secretary, Bruce Parker chasing our match positions and results.

I’d like to thank Steve Thomlinson from Barker College who, for the past decade or so, has allowed this Association to play our Shield U/15 and U/16 rep. teams at that school’s magnificent turf ground. This is both a privilege and a pleasure for all who are lucky enough to either watch or participate in a match at Barker.

Well done to our U/12 IDCA President’s Cup team who brought home our only Rep. silverware for 2014 / 15 by becoming Premiers in that competition.

The recent strong junior representative results and high quality cricket played in our junior competitions have been noticed at other levels of cricket in our local area with a large number of HK&HDCA cricketers heavily involved with the Northern District Grade Club in recent seasons. This season our local Grade club were Premiers in 5th Grade for the first time in about 40 summers. This is always a tough competition to win because of players getting pulled up the grades at the last minute. To field a full team, let alone a strong team is always a challenge and good relationships with both our local junior players and clubs are very important for NDs. This was shown to work very successfully as Fifth grade won both their Minor Premiership and Premiership with a team full of our junior players.

I’m very proud of the healthy relationship we have developed in recent years with our local grade club and it is pleasing that we can share in each other’s success because of our strong links. I’d like to thank their President, Mike Langford and his committee for their efforts in ensuring our cricketers are supported with opportunities and have a clear pathway to develop and progress with their cricket.

I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the very valuable contribution from our various sponsors and sincerely thank them for the significant role they play in our growth, development and success at all levels of the Association; • Hornsby RSL • Kookaburra Sport • Triforce Sports • Eylex (Rep. Cricket sponsor) • Bendigo Bank, Turramurra • Commonwealth Bank, Hornsby (girls cricket development sponsor)

I would ask you to continue to support those who so generously support the HK&HDCA.

Thanks to the extensive Club committee members and many other volunteers and, of course the parents who put in considerable effort each week to ensure our junior teams take the field with the best possible preparation. Without your hard work we simply would not have a competition for our junior cricketers.

After four years as President of the HK&HDCA and ten years as an active member of the Association Executive I have decided that I will not stand for any Executive position in the upcoming season other as the NSW DCA delegate. My active time involved with the HK&HDCA has been an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience for me. I have seen many changes and initiatives with the greater majority improving the Association and what we do. I will be handing on an extremely healthy and growing Association to a new President who will be loyally supported by a very active and experienced Executive.

I would like to recognize both the Rep. Secretaries in my term as President, Abbas Aly and Bruce Parker. They showed amazing professionalism and dedication to their role. Each showed a wonderful ability to work with and lead very passionate Rep. committees to achieve incredible success and impressive results from our representative teams that have never previously been seen in our history.

3 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT’S REPORT – 2014 / 15 SEASON: Continued

Also I sincerely thank Bruce Kimberley who has run our junior competitions wonderfully for well over a decade. We are extremely fortunate to have such a committed, experienced and fair minded volunteer to run this very important corner of our Association. The work he does is extraordinary.

I have watched our unique Coaches Association develop from strength to strength after they were formed shortly before I became President. Bruce Wood and his team have created a very valuable asset to the HK&HDCA and our local cricketers in general. They have also made us the envy of other Associations across Sydney with their work becoming known even further afield. Very recently Bruce Wood and the Coaches Association took a strong junior team to tour Sri Lanka for a wonderful experience that only further developed these young cricketers on very different surfaces and conditions.

Our senior competition has been run by a very dedicated committee led by Gavin Wingfield. They have a thankless job that without their many long meetings we simply could not run our senior competitions. Their considerable preseason work ensures everything is ready and implemented on time and we have the best possible competitions for the coming season. They have often made some very difficult decisions and I know they perform an extraordinary amount of additional work throughout the season to ensure we have the fairest competitions possible. To Gav and his hard working team, I salute you!

Our Umpires Association continues to grow and develop year after year. I have no doubt that our Association has the highest number of quality officials regularly available for our Association competitions, in the NSW DCA. This is also often a very valuable asset that can be taken for granted until it is not there. I have certainly appreciated the efforts of their Secretary Steve Wilson and President Geoff Hasler, together with veteran umpires John McQuillan and Barry McDonald, for the great work they have done in this area. These guys continue to share their knowledge and skills to other areas of our Association through hosting junior parent training nights and senior captain’s ticket courses each season.

Our Treasurer Tim Davidson, who is also the Umpire’s Association Treasurer, has performed his duties extremely efficiently in his 3 and a half seasons he has been in the role. It has been of great assistance to me to be confident in the knowledge that this crucially important part of our Association is looked after and secure. Thanks for all your work Tim.

A massive thanks also to our Association Minutes Secretary Bill White, as the quality and timely work his produces ensures everything in our Association is followed up as and when required with responsibilities clearly defined. Bill, your professionalism and unique ability will never really be noticed by others until you are not there.

I need to sincerely thank my two Vice Presidents in Geoff Hasler and Geoff Findlay (also chairs our Disputes & Disciplinary committee). These guys do so much of the often unpopular but very necessary work behind the scenes, and their considerable efforts have been greatly appreciated. We are indeed fortunate to have the services of these two Association Life Members in such senior and active roles.

Together with Executive member Scott Burrows, this team of guys on the HK&HDCA Executive have been their consistently through the last four HK&HDCA seasons and its many ups and downs. Put simply they have made my role as President so much easier and I thank them all for their considerable support through my term.

I would also like to recognize someone in our Association who rarely gets a mention for his work in our Executive Officer, Craig Menzies. Being our only paid employee amongst so many volunteers Craig is expected to do so much and all at a moment’s notice, for his meagre HK&HDCA salary. The work he does is always thankless and almost never recognized, and so now I would like to thank him for the quality work, support and patience he shows in dealing with many personalities across our Association and in Councils, many who are too often pushing for their request to be prioritized and performed immediately. It is a very tough gig but Craig does it extremely well. I also thank Craig’s two predecessors in Justin Epthorp and Ben Gussey for the great work they did in the role of HK&HDCA Executive Officer in my term as President.

The support I have received from many of our Association Life Members in my term has not been insignificant. I would like to specifically thank both Alf James and Tom Richmond for their guidance right throughout my

4 HK&HDCA PRESIDENT’S REPORT – 2014 / 15 SEASON: Continued four year term.

At the end of my time as President of the HK&HDCA I look back I am proud to see the hard work the Executive put in during this period which has left the Association in a far stronger position than it was four seasons ago. We have record numbers of senior teams with the top grades playing a very high level of cricket on quality grounds. We have a record number of clubs with grassroots cricket programs in place, and our junior team numbers in the early age groups are also at a record high. The results from our representative teams has been our best in our history and the income from our many loyal sponsors is also at the highest level it has ever been. The relationship with the three local Councils that provide us with grounds is as strong as ever and our umpire numbers are not only very healthy but also of very high quality and always looking for ways to further improve across all levels. Our unique Coaches Association has developed to be the benchmark for other Associations to try to replicate. Our relationships with the almost all our neighbouring Associations is as strong as ever, as is our relationship with Cricket NSW, our local Grade Club in Northern District and our local Shires club in Epping Bulls.

It is a very strong Association that I hand over to a new President in 2015/16 but there are still many challenges for the new Executive. The three biggest challenges I see are;

Working better with the NSW District Cricket Association who run our Shield Representative competitions. Being the peak body for all Associations the DCA should do so much more for Associations and cricket development. Together with senior representatives from other Associations this is something I am working on restructuring for the better into the future.

The second big issue facing the Association is grounds. We not only need to retain the grounds we have access to now for our competitions, we also require upgrades to these grounds and accompanying facilities. We also need new grounds to come online for us to ensure our continued growth is catered for at all levels. Like many of the winter sports, especially soccer and AFL, local cricket administrators (at both club and Association level) need to work closely with Councils and schools to lobby for appropriate upgrades and new grounds, as well as be ready to contribute their share when an opportunity arises.

Finally I believe the biggest challenge facing the Association is the size and power of some of our bigger clubs including our two biggest, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook CC and to a lesser extent Berowra CC. These clubs have been very well administrated for a long time and have experienced very good growth in both their talent pool and player numbers.

There are a few cricket Associations in Sydney that have the very sad situation of just five or six teams competing in their top grade from just two or three clubs. The HK&HDCA, with the support of the member clubs, must do everything possible to avoid this position.

A very pleasing aspect to our largest clubs is their willingness to share their “secrets” of their successes with clubs looking to develop so they can keep pace with these larger benchmark clubs. In recent seasons it has been heartening to watch clubs like St Ives changing with the times and starting to enjoy growth coupled with on field success, whilst developing juniors. The ARL and Glenorie clubs have also been successful on the field and developed the important junior side of their club. The Sydney Lions, who are relatively new to our Association but without juniors, is also another club that has progressed strongly at senior level and is now experiencing success. I congratulate all these clubs for what they have been able to achieve in recent seasons and encourage other clubs to follow their path.

However some clubs only want to remain small or are unable to grow because of circumstances beyond their control. It is crucial for the long term survival of our Association that these smaller HK&HDCA clubs are able to experience deserving successes and not be “squashed” by the intimidating bigger clubs.

I am very confident that the new HK&HDCA Senior Executive will continue be very careful to ensure our cricket is played on fair and level terms irrespective of a team/club’s power or size to allow our Association to remain vibrant, diverse and a respected organization that everyone wants to play cricket in, at all levels. Nathan Tilbury, HK&HDCA President

8 TRIFORCE SPORTS

Triforce Sports has had another great year and our association with HK&HDCA is continually growing. We are glad to report that we have had another very successful cricket season and this is largely as a result of the support we have been shown by HK&HDCA and its affiliates.

At the beginning of the 2014/2015 cricket season we launched the Triforce Sports loyalty program which offers a 10% discount to members and also provides a rebate of 5% back to the club. We had an overwhelming response from HK&HDCA members and will be continuing to offer this program to any club that is interested. Clubs that sign on to the loyalty program are also entitled to have a 20% OFF sales night at one of our stores before the start of the season. These nights are planned for late August to provide clubs the opportunity to promote to their member base for a few weeks before the event. If your club would be interested in joining the loyalty program or you have further questions regarding our sales nights, please contact sales@ triforcesports.com.au.

Triforce Sports was also a proud supporter of the super club raffle during the 2014/2015 season which was designed to benefit the clubs and ended up raising a lot of money which was of direct benefit to the clubs involved. The lucky major prize winner was Mike Pawley who drove away in a brand new VW polo.

Don’t forget to check us out on the social media streams, we often run competitions and promote new products through our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Follow us @triforce_sports.

Please remember that we are “more than just a cricket store” and we cater to a number of team and individual sports and we carry fitness equipment and apparel so come and check out exactly what we have to offer at our Bella Vista, Gordon or Mortlake stores.

9 The HK&HDCA is extremely fortunate to have Hornsby RSL as our sponsor partner. We have just completed our fourth year together and I am pleased to say they will continue into 2015/16. Hornsby RSL has given the Association and many of our affiliated groups a true comfortable home location to meet and socialize.

The RSL is a terrific fit for the HK&HDCA being excellent central location for the many meetings we hold throughout the year as well as hosting our various sub-committee meetings and our affiliated bodies such as the Umpire’s and Coach’s Association meetings. Post meeting we can enjoy a relaxing drink together which has created a healthy social scene for all involved. The RSL also hosts our largest and most prestigious event in the Junior/Representative Presentation by kindly provided their excellent Showroom facilities for our use. Again in June 2015 this event was extremely well supported with over 500 people in attendance to review the junior and representative season and recognize the highest achievers.

The RSL is also a great location to host our less formal events such as our season launch (mid July), annual Xmas Drinks (early December) off season President’s Forum (mid May), all of which have become very popular and enjoyable annual events.

My thanks in particular to senior RSL manager Steve Rigney who manages our sponsorship each year and Jo Gilbert who so professionally manages our many bookings and events through the year, even with very late notice as sometimes can occur.

10 The HK&HDCA has been proud to receive sponsorship from Kookaburra Sport since 2004-05 and in February 2013, both parties agreed to continue this partnership until at least the 2017- 18 season, with increased ball royalties (rebates) included in the deal. This season Kookaburra sponsored HK&HDCA and member clubs to the tune of over $7,500, comprising ball rebates, prizes and other in-kind benefits. HK&HDCA sincerely thanks Noel Moig and Cameron Eve, a former player of our Association, for all their support and assistance.

ABOUT KOOKABURRA Kookaburra Sport was established in 1890. For the first 100 years of its existence, Kookaburra Sport traded as A G Thompson Pty Ltd and many members of the Thompson family are still involved in the day to day running of the company, looking to extend its award winning record as the world’s best known manufacturer of cricket and hockey balls.

11 LOCAL COUNCIL REPORTS

HORNSBY SHIRE COUNCIL

Hornsby Shire Council (HSC) prepare the majority of Council grounds our Association uses and they have always provided us with excellent facilities at all levels of cricket, this season was no different.

Once again HSC provided top quality turf for our premier senior competitions; A Grade and Kookaburra Cup (A2), and many of our representative team’s home matches. I would like to sincerely thank Geoff Witt, HSC Parks Service Unit Coordinator, and his two dedicated groundsmen, Kristian Mitchell (Berowra & Parklands) and Darren Green (Storey & Asquith) for the great work and service they provided again this summer. These guys take a lot of pride in their work and obviously enjoy what they do. This is reflected in the quality of pitches they consistently produce for our best cricketers.

During the winter months of 2015 we are working closely with Council staff to further improve other aspects which include: • Gaining access to facilities such as change rooms and toilets at all grounds • Ensuring the grass is not left too long in the latter parts of our season as Council prepares for the Winter season handover • Gaining use to new grounds within our Association boundaries • Sharing costs for required upgrades to grounds/pitches and or training facilities

There is also some positive news about some new potential grounds that are planned for the near future such as: • The Old Dairy (aka Seymours Gully) at Brooklyn should be available early next year for cricket. • The Old Pony Club (aka Stringybark Ridge) at Pennant Hills is currently out on public exhibition with a recommendation to amend the Plan of Management to allow for a new sports field to be built. Council has agreed to fund the required work to make this happen if the amendment is accepted. • Hornsby Council is also in talks with Sydney Water about their large piece of unused land off Quarter Sessions Road, Westleigh, and a potential sports field there

Recently Montview Oval (West & East) underwent major work including badly required major drainage improvements and this is expected to be available for use for the start of 2015/16. The grounds at Montview were almost always the first to be ruled unfit for play in wet conditions. However it is expected the recent work there will have them at a similar condition to Foxglove North & South, after their drainage work a few years prior, these are now almost always the last grounds to be ruled unfit for play in wet conditions.

Also major facilities upgrade work has been done at both Warrina St. Oval (Berowra) and Storey Park (Asquith), which will make playing cricket at these two locations will be a much better experience.

On behalf of the HK&HDCA Executive, our members and affiliated bodies I thank Hornsby Shire Council for their consistent of quality facilities for our members use and, in recent years, their strong willingness to work with the Association for further improvements.

Nathan Tilbury HK&HDCA President

KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL

Our association is certainly grateful for the facilities provided by the Ku-Ring-Gai Council, as they consistently prepare our grounds to a high standard, be they the two turf pitches, Turramurra Oval and The Glade, or the spread of synthetic wickets that serve our juniors and lower grades.

The demand for grounds is constantly growing, for our junior, senior and representative matches, and with the population of our local government areas placing increased pressure on facilities, it is pleasing to acknowledge the commitment of KMC to the upgrading of community facilities and the introduction of new grounds.

The North Turramurra Recreation Area plans are now well advanced, and we look forward to the provision, within the new development, of an additional cricket wicket, to be in play for Season 2016-17. This, in conjunction with three new football fields, one of which is a synthetic field, netball practice courtsand the major redevelopment of the North Turramurra Golf Course, demonstrates the commitment to enhance sporting facilities in the area.

12 LOCAL COUNCIL REPORTS: Continued

Our sincere thanks must be recorded to Peter Barrett and his sports field maintenance team, led by the very cooperative Phil Imber, as they have prepared excellent turf wickets at the two HKHDCA grounds, to the delight of our A grade, Kookaburra Cup and representative players throughout the season.

The cooperation and assistance given to us by both Guy Thomas and Matthew Joyce in booking our requirements, especially with regard to those extra dates that we need during the Representative season and the finals of our competitions is greatly appreciated.

The construction of a new synthetic pitch at Mimosa Oval provided a much needed improvement to this facility and we look forward to council’s continuing improvement program for synthetic wickets in the future.

It is vital that our clubs provide the association with objective assessments of our grounds on a regular basis so that we can work more closely with council staff to maintain and improve our grounds and accompanying facilities.

Geoff Hasler HK&HDCA Vice President

THE HILLS SHIRE COUNCIL

I would like to thank Hills Shire Council for their support in 2014 / 15 in regards to making available their astro-wicket grounds for the HK&HDCA.

After a number of senior management changes and structural changes in early 2014 the Association’s relationship with Hills Shire Council has improved and benefited our members, as well as members of other sports Associations and clubs.

Your Executive need to continue to work positively with the new senior management at Hills Council and the Councillors themselves to help them focus on addressing the shortage of grounds available to us from that Council. This is a particular issue in the West Pennant Hills Valley area where we currently have access to no grounds at any level but where our largest club directly pulls 33% of their membership. There is potential for new grounds in this area and more HK&HDCA work needs to be done to help realise these opportunities.

At the start of the 2014 / 15 season Hills Council passed on all their costs for the turf wicket maintenance at Kenthurst No. 1 ground. This forced the Association to take over the maintenance responsibility for this wicket and we contracted HSA Landscapes to do this work. I’d like to thank Matt Boorer from HSA Landscapes and his team, who even worked some Saturday mornings (out of contract) when required, for the great work they performed in their initial season with the HK&HDCA. I would also like to recognize the effort and contribution from the Kenthurst Upper Hills Club, in particular their long term servant Dave Lea in bringing the club together at the right time to ensure this ground was not lost to the Association as a turf wicket ground.

Despite a very wet second half of the season the pitch reports on Kenthurst strongly indicated the quality of the wickets there exceeded previous seasons. It also hosted our Martin Shield representative home fixtures.

I would like to thank our sponsor Triforce and the Kenthurst Upper Hills Club for their substantial financial contribution to the 2015/16 turf wicket maintenance costs, which included the purchase of new equipment that will continue to be used for the coming season and beyond.

Kenthurst No. 1 ground has a quality turf wicket and preserving it is crucially important to the balance of our A grade competition and continued development of junior cricketers from the Club’s on that side of our Association’s boundary. This Association will continue to do everything in its power to retain that turf wicket at an affordable level for use by our cricketers.

Nathan Tilbury HK&HDCA President

15 COACHES’ ASSOCIATION (HKHDCCA)

Executive Committee – Bruce Wood (President); Justin Epthorp (Vice-President); Josh Miller (Secretary); Rod Hokin (Head Coach) and Will Fiedler (Treasurer); supported by: General Committee – Sujith Dissanayake, Brad McCarroll, Daniel Anderson, James Madden & Todd Williams; and Patrons – Ross Turner, Tom Richmond OAM and Matt Kean MP (Member for Hornsby).

School holiday junior cricket clinics (in partnership with Northern District CC) HKHDCCA conducted six successful cricket clinics during the school holidays in 2014/15, as follows: • Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara 22 – 24 September 2014 – 73 children and 10 coaches attended; • Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara 29 – 30 September 2014 – 75 children and 11 coaches; • Turramurra / Karuah Park 12 – 13 January 2015 – 32 children and 6 coaches; • Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara 14 – 16 January 2015 – 70 children and 10 coaches; • George Thornton Res, WPH 19 – 20 January 2015 – 67 children and 9 coaches; • Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara 21 – 23 January 2015 – 71 children and 10 coaches.

Our popular school holiday cricket clinics continued to grow during 2014/15, with a record number of attendees (388) across the six junior clinics held. HKHDCCA organised clinics at two new venues in January 2015, being Turramurra Oval / Karuah Park, and George Thornton Reserve, West Pennant Hills, and both venues proved to be very suitable. Mark Taylor Oval, Waitara, continues to be our headquarters for school holiday clinics and we thank Mike Langford, NDCC President, and Hornsby Shire Council for their ongoing support and access to the turf cricket nets.

The coaches engaged during these school holiday cricket clinics included Rod Hokin (Head Coach), Bruce Wood (Co ordinator), Josh Miller, Justin Epthorp, Chris Burnett, Will Fiedler, Daniel Anderson & Jonny Webb (Level 2 accredited coaches); plus James Madden, Nick McNay, Nicky Miller, John Anderson, Aaron Crofts, Calvin Breytenbach, Luke Thorburn, Mitch Fullagar, Hamish Fullagar & Alex Dolly (Level 1 coaches). We were pleased to engage English cricketer, Jonathon Webb (ECB 2 coach) at two clinics in January. Jonny plays for Warwickshire in English County Cricket and played First Grade for Northern District CC in Sydney in 2014 / 15.

In January 2015, HKHDCCA introduced a special new major award to recognise outstanding sportsmanship, team work, enthusiasm and spirit of cricket at each of our school holiday junior cricket coaching clinics. Congratulations to the first 4 winners of the HKHDCCA Phillip Hughes Medal – Luc White (WPHC); Cooper Davenport (Berowra); Lachlan Shaw (K-UH) & Connor Hindmarch (WPHC). The Phillip Hughes Medal will be presented at all future holiday clinics.

Off-season coaching programs (May – August 2014) HKHDCCA held its annual U/10 – U/11 Development Program and its U/12 – U/15 Specialist Coaching Program at James Park, Hornsby over 10 Sundays during the winter months. These popular programs provided structured coaching for our youngest representative age groups through to the Association’s older junior rep. players. Both programs provided subsidised, high quality coaching for hundreds of players covering , pace & spin , wicket-keeping, catching, throwing and ground fielding. HKHDCCA purchased a new iPad during 2014 / 15, which proved to be a versatile additional coaching aid, along with the Association’s new bowling machine. Both off- season programs were very successful with strong attendances and positive feedback from the players and their parents.

HKHDCCA also co-ordinated the annual Ross Turner Cup and Glenn Hourigan Cup matches; held a free coaching clinic for Beginners; organised a Community (Level 1) accredited coaching course; and a free clinic for Blowfly Cricket, a wonderful organisation led by Mark Rushton that provides children with special needs the opportunity to play cricket. HKHDCCA was delighted to induct Tom Richmond OAM as our inaugural Life Member at our AGM on 17 June 2014. Congratulations to Mark Harvey from Pennant Hills DCC for winning the HKHDCCA Coach of Year award (Bruce Wood Cup), after his U/16 team won its fourth consecutive premiership and consistently displayed very good spirit of cricket.

Growth of HKHDCCA (Coaches’ Association) after 5 years of operations HKHDCCA’s coaching activities continued to expand in season 2014/15, with a record number of attendees at our school holiday cricket clinics and various off-season development programs, making HKHDCCA one of the largest providers of junior cricket coaching and development in NSW. To illustrate the enormous growth in HKHDCCA coaching activities over the past 5 years, in our first season (2010/11), we conducted 3 coaching clinics with a total attendance of 107 children. We had just 2 x Level 2 accredited coaches and 9 x Level 1 coaches on our books.

In season 2014/15, HKHDCCA conducted 10 different coaching programs with our usual small Coach / Player ratios, achieving a total attendance of 1,154 children. We now have 11 regular Level 2 accredited coaches and 12 x Level 1 coaches in action. We also supply coaches to several HK&HDCA representative teams and many of our capable young coaches are now in demand to provide private (one-on-one) professional coaching for young 16 COACHES’ ASSOCIATION (HKHDCCA): Continued representative cricketers.

We are proud of the key role that HKHDCCA plays in the local cricket community, as it has made a significant impact on increasing coaching numbers and capabilities, and fast-tracking the cricket development of young players of all standards. It has also been rewarding to build a dedicated committee of volunteers to administer HKHDCCA. Each of these men fully embraced their responsibilities and played a key leadership role in the expansion of the Coaches’ Association. HKHDCCA plans to continue a steady pattern of growth over the next 5 years and further expand our coaching services to the wider community, some of whom have encountered barriers or lack of opportunities to participate in cricket in north-western Sydney, including disadvantaged groups, children from non-English speaking communities (non-traditional cricket backgrounds), children with special needs, and junior female players.

28 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2014-15

The season began with our T20 competitions across 5 grades. The 1st grade competition comes with prize money from our ever-generous sponsors Triforce and in the final West Pennant Hills - Cherrybrook completed a victory over Normanhurst Warrawee inside 14 overs at the loss of just 3 wickets, after restricting the opposition to 99 off their 20 overs. In a similarly quick 14 over chase by Sydney Lions, Berowra were again the defeated finalists in 2nd Grade with 4/127 off 20 not enough to hold off the dominant Lions. Sydney Lions were also the victors in 3rd grade, this time defending 6/175 as Normanhurst Warrawee fell short all out in the final over for 131. Sydney Lions clearly enjoy the short form of the game and completed a famous hat-trick of the middle grade competitions by beating Hornsby in the 4th grade, this time it wasn’t so straightforward as they chased a modest 3/105 in a game that swung back and forth with wickets falling regularly, but enough in the shed to see them through in the 18th over. The 5th grade final was won by West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, as Castle Hill RSL failed to keep up with the required rate.

After the registration of additional teams resulted in the increase to ten grades with 6 in some of them and the turning away of an additional team, late withdrawals resulted in a 72 teams spread across the ten grades. The Sunday Competition also suffered and was contested by just 5 teams.

This season the weather was kind to us and we managed to get in a decent amount of cricket with very few washouts or abandonments. A Grade was less fortunate with a number of matches washed out. The weather for the finals was quite glorious and the rain that threatened the semi-finals fell only on the Friday night before day 2 and only really affected one game due to a problem with the covers.

Congratulations to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook who once again successfully defended their A Grade Premiership, making it four in a row. Going into round 14, any one of 4 teams could have taken the last final place but it eventually went to Hornsby, who just lacked a bit of fire power to overcome the Minor Premiers. The other semi-final was a much closer affair with ARL in the box seat at 5/114 chasing down 147 until Griffin took 3 quick wickets and Fury polished off the tail leaving Folkard stranded. Both of the finalist teams suffered just the 1 defeat going into the final, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook losing to St Ives Wahroonga in round 2 and Berowra undefeated until round 14, where they lost to their eventual conquerors in the final. It was a cruel blow for Berowra, who had lead the competition for almost the entire season, but missed out on both Minor Premiers and Premiers. They should be heartened by the fact that they get closer and closer and the A Grade competition is no longer a 2 horse race. In a low scoring final only 2 players made double figures in the first innings and 3 in Berowra’s second innings as West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook won outright, with much thanks to Newman (43) and in particular Taylor who top scored with 74. Pick of the bowlers were Berowra’s Watts with 7-49, while West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook shared the wickets around with Jobson taking 7 across the 2 innings. Congratulations again to the victorious team but credit to all those who take up the challenge of playing in the Association’s premier grade.

Congratulations also to the following: Kookaburra Cup (A Reserve) – In another tight competition, with the top 4 places decided and separated by just 6 points 4th placed Normanhurst Warrawee jumped to the top of the table to be crowned Minor Premiers just ahead of Berowra who were level on points with them going into the game, with Sydney Lions dropping from 1st to forth with their defeat and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook coming in 4th. However 4th place overcame first in a tight semi-final where Normanhurst-Warrawee took West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook to a fourth innings to eventually win it. In the other semi-final, faulty covers (or the poor application of good ones) played a part as there was no play on the 2nd day between Sydney Lions and Berowra with the game interestingly poised with Berowra 7/58 chasing Sydney Lions 94. So as in A Grade it was Berowra v West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, only the advantage of position in the table was reversed. The outcome however was no different, with an outright victory to West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook due in no small part to the batting of Wurth who added 109 to the 405 runs he already had for the season, and 10 wickets to the 51 he already had for the season. I anticipate him getting more than the 1 over he had in A Grade this season and also doing a little better than the 9 runs he went for in that over. We should also note the contribution of D Steptoe for Berowra who fought back with a partnership with Burrell to take the Berowra 1st innings from 5/45 to 6/123 in the 1st innings.

B Grade had two semi-finals with numbers of note. 4th placed St Ives Wahroonga used 9 bowlers as they failed to chase down the SKLPS total, while Berowra had 5 ducks as they similarly failed in chasing ARL. So

29 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2014-15: Continued

the top two separated by a quotient of just 0.14 (SKLPS Minor Premiers) met in the final. It should be noted that the ARL side who were the eventual Premiers had challenged themselves having won B Reserve for the previous two seasons, and were rewarded for their efforts. Those who have played in finals know that runs are hard to come by, and at 1-60 chasing 129 ARL must have thought that it was just a matter of time, however a series of quick wickets by A Pindoria found them 6/71 but they steadied the ship and took a first innings lead as Burfitt and Banks saw them past the SKLPS score. With a bowler of the quality of A Pindoria in your side you always feel you can bowl a team out cheaply, so it was worth a 2nd innings, and after a quick 106 put SKLPS 71 runs ahead and the ARL opener departing without the scorers troubled, it was game on, but ARL dug in and only lost one more wicket as they comfortably passed the SKLPS score.

B Reserve was a 6 team competition and a series of forfeits by Normanhurst - Warrawee turned the final table around with the top 4 separated by just 5 points. An outright win by West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook over Hornsby saw them take the Minor Premiership, but controversially also saw Castle Hill RSL take 10 points from their forfeit pushing Kissing Point into 4th spot. None the less, Kissing Point had a good go and couldn’t quite beat the Minor Premiers despite using 8 bowlers to try and displace J Patterson while in the other semi-final after a close 1st innings Sydney Lions comfortably batted through their 2nd innings. Now West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook had won both A Grade and the Kookaburra Cup with outright victories and in this final they made the hat-trick. Justin Paterson again ripped through the Sydney Lions, and with 43 wickets at an average of 6.4 going into the game, it was no real surprise. In the Lions 2nd innings though, S Gerber showed that there is plenty of bowling in the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook side when Patterson and Grover have a rest, taking 6/24. Baskaran had the highest score of the Sydney Lions across the 2 innings, but managed only a duck in the 2nd.

C Grade – Back to the 8 team competitions and another close battle saw 1st and 8th separated by just 28 points and the eventual top 4 by only 6 points. The semi-final between 2nd placed West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook and 3rd placed Galston Glenorie was a cracker as West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook led by 20 runs (76-56) after the first innings. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook increased their lead to 125 and with GG 5/114 it looked like they would emerge victorious. Enter R Mucherla who took 4 of the last 5 wickets to finish with 6/10 for the innings 8/22 for the match. In the other semi-final Berowra dug in to bat steadily to 7/147 in reply to Sydney Lions 179 and progress courtesy of their position on the ladder. So to another final between Berowra and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, and this time Berowra put on a solid 177, in no small part thanks to #2 Williams (63) and #3 Boyle (49). Despite the efforts of Mucherla, this time with the bat and the 2 Goddards, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook were unable to overcome the Berowra score and Berowra finally had a win and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook a defeat, but as a singer once said, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad. C2 began as a 6 team competition but finished as a relatively tight 8 team competition, when St Ives Wahroonga who had been cut adrift early on put in a few victories in the 2nd half of the season. A quotient of 0.09 separated first place Berowra from 2nd placed Normanhurst Warrawee, with SKLPs and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook 3 and 4 points behind them respectively. This couldn’t be another Berowra v West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook final as they met in the semi-final and Berowra chalked up another win by a mere 11 runs in a low scoring affair, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook using 8 bowlers and sharing the wickets around while Baxter did the damage for Berowra taking 6/39. By coincidence SKLPS lost the other semi-final, sharing the bowling among 8 players while J Reed 6-47 did the damage for Normanhurst Warrawee as they won by 96 runs. Baxter (B) v Reed (NW) in the final then and both bowled 26 overs. Both of them also had 10 maidens but with 1/42 for Reed and 4/37 for Baxter, it was little surprise that Berowra came out the winners, but it was Jamal of Berowra who appeared to be the star of the day with 4/21 and a spirited unbeaten 21 with the bat to match.

C3 No questions in the ladder on this one as the unbeaten West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook stormed away with the Minor Premiership, losing an average of less than 6.5 wickets a match at an average of nearly 30 while their opposition couldn’t even manage an average of 15 in reply. They were a staggering 30 points clear of 2nd place Beecroft who battled it out in what appeared a close competition from 2nd down, with only Mount Colah appearing to struggle. 4th placed Kissing Point faced the challenge to take on West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook in the semi-final, with West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook falling just short of their 30 runs per wicket average putting on 263 while Kissing Point managed just 109 in reply. ARL showed that they can bat too as they put on 259 in their semi-final, Tanner putting on 98. Beecroft could have batted out the draw but went on to score 264 and were brimming with confidence going into the final. The final was not as high scoring

30 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2014-15: Continued and Beecroft must have thought that their 157 was going to be tough to defend. This was a final though and despite being 5-31 at one point, Bourk, who had enjoyed a season that included 104* in C2 steadied the ship and despite being unbeaten on 52, no one stayed with him long enough. A 2nd innings followed and 120 off 15 overs was too much for even the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook side to chase down.

C4 this explosive grade started off with 8 teams but became 6, and it was a St Ives Wahroonga side who made the running, having lost only 2 games all season they went into the finals as solid favourites. The margin of their Minor Premiership was not as large as the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook C3 one, but 19 points was still considerable, although they appeared to struggle against Kissing Point who came in 3rd behind Berowra and ahead of Galston Glenorie in a grade where there were 7 outrights. Galston Glenorie struggled against a St Ives side whose bowling was as explosive as the grade itself, with captain Flaks taking a hat trick on his way to 5-10. It was backs to the wall as GG managed just 42 off 38.5 overs. Warne was the pick of the St Ives batting putting on 93, as his team mates appeared to have similar difficulties on the way to 158, and 120 in GGs 2nd innings simply wasn’t enough. In the other semi-final, Berowra set about batting steadily and reached 189 off 99.1 overs and despite J C Klingberg putting on a spirited 26, Kissing Point couldn’t overcome the target. In the final Berowra chose to bat first and in an innings of 21 maidens, only Robinson and captain Vincent managed double figures and surely 74 wasn’t enough? There was only the slightest of wobbles as St Ives overcame the target 5 down. Stand in captain Grosvenor (5-16) bowled 8.4 overs as Berowra had a go at a 2nd innings, but it wasn’t their game and eventually conceded defeat.

D Grade began as a 7 team competition and after Galston Glenorie withdrew became another 6 team competition and despite St Ives Wahroonga being adrift, there were only 8 points that separated minor premiers Hornsby from 4th placed Kissing Point. 2nd placed Thornleigh who were beaten to the minor premiership on quotient came up against 3rd placed Berowra, who looked evenly matched on paper. Berowra put Thornleigh in to bat, which looked a poor decision when Thornleigh were 2 for 142 then 5-180, but a late collapse meant Berowra had to chase 197, which was still a decent total. At 3-23 the chase looked tough but a solid stand meant it was game on. The match incredibly resulted in a tie, meaning that Thornleigh progressed. In the other semi-final Extras played a starring role, and despite a solid innings from Torpy who starred with the ball in the D2 grand final a few years before, the ducks by the top 4 didn’t help Kissing Point as they were unable to chase down Hornsby’s total. In the final Brahadesh was the difference between the sides, top scoring in Hornsby’s innings and then taking 6-22 as Thronleigh were dismissed for 89 chasing Hornsby’s 174.

D2 was another 6 team competition and the balance swung back and forth between a number of teams. The two youthful teams of Berowra and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook faced off in one semi-final and St Ives Wahroonga and Hornsby promised a feisty encounter in a rematch of the washed out 2010-11 semi. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook overcame Berowra in a low scoring game, the young pace bowlers Carlin, Larkham and Bish doing the damage, while St Ives dug in against a side that they had beaten once and lost to twice in the season, batting into day 2 to post just 157 St Ives dismissed Hornsby for 95. Onto the final and it was 2 old friends up against each other. In the last 5 years St Ives, have been defeated finalists twice and defeated semi-finalists twice, could this be the year? As the captain fell lbw first ball of the match, it wasn’t looking great, but the team rallied and batted through to almost the end of the day, Bloach the hero falling for 84 with the score on 233. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook had to face 3 overs and lost 2 wickets for 1 run. Starting day 2 on 2/1 they were soon 3/3 and wickets fell regularly. Despite a spirited last wicket stand by captain Westerberg and Asquith, they were all out for 51, 200 runs short of the St Ives total, with Rewell 6/26 doing the damage on day 2. The scenes at the end of the game showed how important the D2 grade is and how much it means to players within the grade not just in winning, but also in supporting the opposition and the game of cricket.

Sunday competition – We had just 5 teams enter the Sunday competition this year. Berowra were unfortunate to be the team to miss out on the semi-final. 4th placed St Ives Wahroonga were put into bat by West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Red and posted a competitive 7-176. This game went to the wire as West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Red scored the winning runs with a 4 off the 2nd last ball. Meanwhile West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Blue after being 3-13 chased down Hornsby’s total with relative ease in the other semi-final. So it was West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Red v Blue in the final which was shortened to 26 overs due to the weather and Blue’s 114 was not enough as Red chased it down with 2.2 overs to spare.

31 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT 2014-15: Continued

The John Hayne Cup this season attracted 8 teams and it needed bonus points to separate Hornsby B from St Ives Wahroonga C3 both of whom were undefeated in a tournament that still proves to be great fun, friendly and competitive for those who don’t quite make the finals.

In the overall club competition, congratulations go to Asquith Rugby League, who take out the Club Championship.

Credit goes as always to the clubs and their players for playing the game in great spirit throughout the season. I would like to thank the clubs and registrars for their efforts in complying with the rules this season; we did have to issue a number of fines and a few points penalties but the majority of clubs did well to avoid any serious breaches of the rules.

There was a lot of discussion about ratings before the start of the season, and I would point out to each club that it is as much their responsibility as it is the SCC to ensure that players are competing in the correct grade. In an ideal world we wouldn’t need ratings and I have spent a lot of time this season talking to players and the resounding theme coming from the vast majority of them is that they want to compete on an even playing field. As a player myself, I can tell you that it is no fun playing in matches where individuals are playing well below their ability. It was great to see some clubs who haven’t featured as Premiers recently, Beecroft and St Ives Wahroonga (who managed to take out both C4 and D2), while Sydney Lions did well to win all 3 T20s that they entered. 3 Premierships for WPHC is no mean feat, and Berowra were highly competitive but just couldn’t take out the grand finals that their overall season might have deserved on paper.

Running the competition is very much a team effort and I would like to extend my thanks to the SCC members, Geoff Findlay, Roger Friend (who had a hip replacement but still only missed one meeting), Brad Rayner, John Klingberg and Glenn Gittins (who had to drop off half way through the season after his wife gave birth). The committee have given up countless hours throughout the season to ensure that the competition runs as smoothly and fairly as possible. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, and John Klingberg in particular deserves credit for the amount of time and effort he puts in as the association registrar and also match auditor.

I would also like to thank Craig Menzies, our executive officer for his support and co-ordination of the covers.

We should also thank the recreational staff of the three Councils who have prepared some fantastic wickets for us this season and continue to work (often against the weather) to improve them.

Our thanks is also extended to the Umpires’ Association and HK&HDCA Executive who have given us support and helped to make 2014-15 a successful season.

We are already well into the planning of the coming season which I hope will bring another fine and even closer competition next season. 38 A GRADE FINAL

Venue: Asquith Oval Umpires: Geoff Hasler and Simon Moore

Great weather greeted the players at a superbly presented Asquith Oval for the A Grade Final, with Minor Premiers, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, seeking their fourth premiership in succession.

James Makin and Scott Griffin captained their respective teams, with Scott winning the toss and deciding to bat, a decision not unexpected given the appearance of the pitch. Opening bowler, Matt Spalding took the new ball and started the final in spectacular fashion by removing the off stump with the first ball of the match, sending the reliable Grant Reid back to the sheds to contemplate his decision to shoulder arms to the first ball of the day.

The Berowra batsmen were facing a well directed spell from Spalding and opening partner, Matt Jobson, and wickets continued to fall on a wicket that gave the new ball bowlers encouragement whilst coming through to the bat on a consistent basis.

The drinks break, after 15 overs, saw Berowra 3-26, but by the lunch break, they had been unable to keep the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook attack at bay and were in deep trouble at 9-48.

Brody Collier and Andrew Cook withstood the attack after lunch to put a further 19 runs to the Berowra total, the highest partnership of the innings, to get the Berowra total to 67 when the final wicket fell.

The West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook bowlers shared the spoils, with Scott Henderson leading with 3-10 (7.4) and Riley Miedler taking 3-13 (10).

West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Captain, James Makin opened with the reliable Sol Tomlinson, with the Berowra side anxious to get a bunch of early wickets.

Both openers were dismissed with 26 runs on the board, before Gavin Taylor and Stuart Newman came together to take the score to 105, with Newman making a solid 43.

When time was called on Saturday, West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook had compiled a score of 4-130, with Gavin Taylor and Lachlan Vile at the crease.

The Berowra bowlers toiled on a very good strip to regularly take wickets, but were frustrated by Taylor who went on to compile a very patient 74 runs before being bowled by the leader of the Berowra attack, Murray Watts, one of Murray’s seven wicket haul in a marathon effort of 7-49 from 27.2 overs, a tremendous contribution.

West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook totalled 181 in their innings, leading by 114 runs, with some 60 overs left in the second day’s play. Berowra, to their credit, took up the challenge to try to score quick runs and set a target for their opponents, with Scott Griffin and Jack Smallhorn opening with the expected aggression.

The first wicket fell at 27, the second at 41, and then it was a task beyond the remaining Berowra batsmen to score quickly, with the team reaching a total of 85 in the second innings, giving the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook team a victory by an innings and 29 runs. Matt Jobson bowled unchanged from the southern end to take 5-37 from his 13 overs and Scott Henderson chimed in with 3-6 to total 6 wickets for the match.

Congratulations to James Makin and his team, and special mention for Gavin Taylor and Stuart Newman for their 79 run partnership, by far the largest partnership of the match.

Commiserations to the Berowra team, and a special mention of the exceptional effort of Murray Watts for his commitment to his 27.2 overs, taking 7-49 for the runners up.

Finally, sincere thanks to Hornsby Council and to groundsman, Darron Green, for the opportunity to play our major final on an excellent pitch, matched by a superb outfield.

71 51st LIFE MEMBER OF HK&HDCA INDUCTED IN 2014

HK&HDCA held its Annual General Meeting on 29th July 2014 and one of the highlights was the induction of Geoff Findlay (pictured below) as the Association’s 51st Life Member.

Geoff has served at the association level in four different decades over a variety of positions. This story started some 36 years ago when he was first elected to the Association executive. By 1981 he held the position of Honorary Representative Secretary and finished his first stint on the executive as Senior Vice President.

At Beecroft CC the story is even longer. Geoff played a few seasons of junior cricket for the club prior to starting his senior career in 1974 / 75. Whilst the club holds no formal records of office bearers, Geoff was heavily involved in the club’s administration during the 1980s. Since the turn of the century, Geoff has held almost every position on the club’s committee

Geoff was central in the reformation of the junior cricket club, including creating a healthy working relationship with Beecroft Public School and the establishment of Kanga cricket for the first time in the club’s history. Without his hard work in establishing the juniors, it is believed the club would have folded, with the seniors reliant on many dads returning to the cricket field.

A strong Association is reliant on a significant number of well organised clubs. Geoff has contributed to this by assisting the rebuilding of Beecroft CC juniors that has helped sustain the senior club. This has also assisted the Association in securing the use of Cheltenham oval, a very good senior ground

Geoff has served in seven different roles at the Association level and has been an integral part of the committee at Beecroft CC over four decades.

He currently approaches his roles on the Disputes and Disciplinary and the Senior Competition Committee with integrity. Bringing some 40 years of playing experience across almost every grade, his aim is to ensure competitions are played fairly by players of a similar standard.

Over the past three to four seasons Geoff has stepped back from a full time player but he is still a committed member of the Hornsby cricket community, volunteering his time and energy to the betterment of cricket.

Geoffrey Hamilton Findlay is first mentioned in the Association’s Annual Reports in 1975 / 76 when he took 30 wickets in D Grade. From 1976 / 77 to 1978 / 79 he was a delegate from Beecroft (attending 52 meetings). In 1979 / 80 he became a member of the Executive Committee and in 1980 / 81 he was Minutes Secretary. In 1981 / 82 and 1982 / 83 he was Representative Secretary and in 1983 / 84 he was again a member of the Executive Committee. He became Vice-President in 1984 / 85 and was Senior Vice-President from 1985 / 86 to 1987 / 88. At this point he ceased cricket administration in order to concentrate on his duties as an alderman on Hornsby Shire Council.

He re-appeared in the Annual Reports as a part-time delegate from Beecroft in the seasons 2003 / 04 to 2008 / 09. In 2009 / 10 he also became a member of the D & D Committee of which he has been Chairman since 2010 / 11. He has also been a member of the Executive Committee since 2012 / 13.

In my view, Geoff has been as effective as any person I can recall at meetings of the Association. He is always well-prepared with his arguments and consistency provides high quality advice whilst ensuring that any discussion does not stray outside the confines of the Rule Book.
