EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I am pleased to present the 102nd Annual Report for 2013 – 2014 for your consideration.

The major development this season was the merging of our 1st Grade with the 1st Grade of Northern Suburbs Cricket Association (NSCA) in the Northern Cricket Union (NCU) Competition. Our top 3 teams (Rydalmere, West Ryde and North Ryde RSL) played against Kirribilli, West Pymble and Cammeray on turf grounds in the A Grade competition. Rydalmere drew with West Ryde in a rain affected game to claim the Premiership. Carlingford, North Ryde and Rydalmere played against North Shore, Kirribilli and North Sydney Leagues in the A Reserve competition also on turf. Carlingford won that competition after the grand final was washed out. This merged competition was an outstanding success with the main benefit of facing new teams and players which added an extra challenging dimension to the game. The merged competition also allowed North Ryde and Rydalmere to have a team in each grade and not play against each other. This merged competition would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the initial discussions of the previous Executive and the continued hard work of Paul Stapleton and Craig Menzies who worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition. Kel Gray also attended a meeting to thrash out rules and we thank him for his time. We thank Mark Lumley from NSCA for this work in getting this competition off the ground and for its ongoing success.

Another initiative this year was the introduction of the “Spirit of Cricket” award in all grades. These awards were generously sponsored by Vikings (3rd grade), Carlingford (4th grade) and Rydalmere (5th grade). This award exists in the 1st grade competition but was extended to all grades this season. This was done to lift the sportsmanship of the games and to reward those teams that played the game in the right spirit. We are pleased to announce the inaugural winners of the new ‘Spirit of Cricket’ awards were:

3rd Grade Meadowbank

4th Grade Vikings Blue

5th Grade Epping YMCA Green

In Judiciary news there were several “Spirit of Cricket” issues raised through the year with one going all the way to the Appeals Tribunal. A couple of warnings were handed out to various people. By and large the games were conducted in the right spirit and the Executive is committed to NDCA cricket being played within the “spirit of cricket”. It is park cricket and people are playing for fun and to be with their mates so it should be enjoyable.

Homer Paxton did a great job recruiting umpires and with John Crane heading up the Umpires Association we had umpires at more games this season than in previous years. We had 2 umpires at all the Junior Grand Finals and the Senior Semi Finals and Grand Finals. With plenty of umpires officiating during the season the clubs were appreciative as it took the heat out of team mates umpiring. So special thanks to our regular umpires: John Vanderlight, John Crane, Homer Paxton, Ian Sinden, Peter Tate, Nirmal de Silva and Christiaan Kennedy. Thanks also to our regular end of season umpires who help with the finals series: Ajit Madan, Ron Vidler, Pete Honeywood, Jude Fonseka and Craig Menzies.

For the first time there was an enlightening meeting held between the NDCA Executive and many of our umpires to discuss various issues. It was excellent for both groups to raise concerns and what each side wants from each other. I certainly feel both sides walked away with a greater appreciation of what each side brings to the table and what the drivers are for the NDCA and the umpires. We plan to continue keeping in close contact with the Umpires Association so each year the communication and expectations are managed to the benefit of all.

This year we had 6 senior teams competing in the merged NCU comp and 20 teams in the NDCA 3rd-5th grade competitions for a total of 26 senior teams. Total players registered were 457. Last season we had 31 teams and so it was very disappointing to lose so many teams from last year. We hope the success of the Australian Test Team and active recruitment from our clubs will reverse this trend.

3

This year we also fielded a Martin Shield Team in the Open Age Seniors Rep Competition. Rain intervened and only 2 games were played and both games were lost. We thank the players who participated and hopefully next season we can get better organized and field better prepared teams with more players available for selection. I am positive we can be competitive in the representative arena.

69 junior teams registered to compete across the 10 Junior grades from Under 16 to Under 9 which was an increase of 3 teams from last season. We convey our thanks to the Junior Committee in running the junior competitions and the assistance provided from the clubs.

Our Junior Rep teams had mixed success with our under 10s and under 16s going very close to making the semi finals. All teams are improving each year and we thank the coaches and managers for their efforts in organizing winter sessions and activities during the season. A big thank you to the parents for their support, endless transporting of kids and the preparation of afternoon tea. Each year we hope more kids attend the trials so we can field our strongest possible teams.

For the first time we fielded a Presidents Cup Rep team and Michael Mynett did an excellent job in marshalling the boys into a strong unit and achieving results well beyond expectations. The boys played in the under 16s Comp but only 3 were of the correct age. Most of the boys were under 15s and one under 14 yet they gelled into an excellent team and won a couple of games most impressively. These boys will be knocking on the door of Rep Selection next season thanks to their involvement in Presidents Cup. Again a special thank you to Michael Mynett for picking up the ball on this team and running it over the try line. Thank you to the parents and boys for their efforts.

I wish to express my thanks on your behalf to Senior Vice President Paul Stapleton, Administration Officer Craig Menzies, Treasurer Paul Vanderlight and club delegates Mick Barry (Carlingford Waratah), Andrew Tenni (Epping YMCA), Paul Stewart (Meadowbank), Kel Gray and Scott Martin (North Ryde RSL), Matthew Roberts (Rydalmere), Dale Arnott (Vikings), Chanaka Senanayake (Sri Lankan Cricket) and Alan Harrison and Chris Fairbairn (West Ryde Rovers), for their assistance in running the senior cricket competition during the season. Also my thanks to Junior Chairman Greg Berriman, the Junior Executive Committee and club delegates for the running of the junior competition.

We convey our thanks to the Ryde, Hornsby and Parramatta Local Councils for their assistance and allocation of the grounds for the season. We also thank these schools: Epping Boys High School, Epping North Primary and Carlingford Primary for allowing us to play on their grounds.

We thank our main sponsor, the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club (RELC). RELC has been our major sponsor for the last three years and their financial support has allowed us to keep playing fees as low as possible. RELC is a great community club and has much to offer its patrons. I urge you to frequent RELC and use its facilities and consider taking up a membership. Please support the club that supports us.

I apologize in advance if I have missed any other people I should have thanked but have forgotten.

Lastly, I would like to thank my predecessor John Crane for his years of service and the support he has shown me in my first year on the job. I know I have made many mistakes along the way but with plenty of guidance from various people I hope I can do a better job in the future to steer cricket in Northern District in the right direction.

Scott was also awarded the Ryde Sports Foundation Perpetual Trophy for Outstanding Player of the Finals with performances of 43 and 3 / 23 in the semi final against Cammeray and then 23 and 2 /31 in the final against West Ryde Rovers. The umpires had the following to say of Scott’s performances in the finals “In the semi he took two vital wickets in the very first over of the match which basically ended up winning the game for Rydalmere, he also made runs. In the final he again made runs at a vital time and also took some wickets. His influence on the team and support of his brother, the captain, is superb.”

Scott had an outstanding season which resulted in the achieving of the four trophies and we again extend our congratulations.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION A GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere

Season 2013/14 began with the first ever competition of the Northern Cricket Union (NCU). Our NDCA competition joined forces with the Northern Suburbs league and a new era was started. This was an exciting time for all concerned and it was a challenge that everyone was looking forward to. We were divided into an A grade competition featuring the top 3 teams from both districts. Rydalmere, West Ryde and North Ryde were the NDCA representatives and Kirribilli, West Pymble and Cammeray were the Northern Suburbs representatives. It also signalled the closest competition in many years with all 6 teams able to make the semis entering the final round.

Playing on new grounds and pitches saw some very low scores and some very high scores as players were getting used to different pitches every week. The standout batsmen in the competition were Matthew Egan (WRR 420 runs – 1 Century), Clive Cachia (North Ryde 388 runs – 2 centuries), Phil Cook (Cammeray 376 runs), Scott Costain (Cammeray 348 runs) & the ever reliable Kel Gray (North Ryde 342 runs). This showed that runs were hard to come by all year as a change of scenery and pitches, along with some wet weather made runs hard to come by.

In terms of bowling there were also a couple of standouts. In what was very much a bowler dominated season the leading takers were – Scott Palmer (Rydalmere 39 @ 12), Niall Owers (Kirribilli 33 @ 17), Kane Stavans (Cammeray 30 @ 13), John Neville (WRR 25 @ 14 ) & Ned Purcell (Kirribilli 25 @15).

As a measure of how successful the competition was, coming into the last round, all teams could make semi- finals, and two teams were battling it out for the Minor Premiership. As a result of their consistency throughout the year, North Ryde was crowned Minor Premiers ahead of Cammeray. Rydalmere finished third & West Ryde finished 4th. This left a couple of tantalising match ups in the semi-finals - North Ryde battled West Ryde and Cammeray battled Rydalmere. All 4 teams believed they were good enough to not only win their semi- final, but also the Grand Final the week after.

At the end of the regular season the A Grade competition table was as follows:

RANK TEAM P W2 W1 D L1 L2 POINTS QUOTIENT

1 North Ryde RSL 10 1 4 3 2 0 42 1.6886

2 Cammeray 10 1 4 2 2 1 40 1.0255

3 Rydalmere 10 2 1 4 2 1 36 0.8964

4 West Ryde Rovers 10 0 4 2 4 0 32 1.1989

5 Kirribilli Crusaders 10 0 3 0 5 2 27 0.8113

6 West Pymble 10 1 2 3 3 1 27 0.7263

Semi Final #1: Cammeray (2nd) vs. Rydalmere (3rd)

With both teams having beaten each other outright this season when not at full strength, this was an intriguing match up. Cammeray won the toss and as on a very green pitch, made the unexpected decision to bat first. After 3 balls they were in disarray as Palmer had 2/0. From there it went downhill for Cammeray as they were bowled out for 74 with Matt Kennedy turning back the clock with taking 6/12 after the early carnage. In return Rydalmere raced the weather and finished at 7/196 with Aman Kashyap top scoring with 51.

Semi Final #2: North Ryde (1st) vs West Ryde (4th)

With both teams having faced each other plenty of times over the last few years there was going to be no surprises as to what both teams plans were going into this game. North Ryde batted first and after a solid start they generally lost wickets at a regular rate and couldn’t get any meaningful partnerships going. Cam Gordon came to the rescue with a quick fire 41 13

THE SENIOR COMPETITION A GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont. in his side’s total of 119. Again for West Ryde it was the combination of J Neville, M Egan and N Fairburn who took all 10 wickets between them.

In reply West Ryde moved to 1/50 overnight with the game seemingly in their grasp. However North Ryde, led by Cam Gordon again with 5/15, had other ideas and with runs on the board North Ryde may have had the lead. However with 9 wickets down and 1 run to get, out strode Andy Thomas to face his old team for a place in the final. As confident as you like he placed the ball through mid-wicket for the winning run. West Ryde went through to the grand final versus Rydalmere.

Grand Final: Rydalmere (3rd) vs West Ryde (4th)

So in a repeat of the 2012/13 NDCA competition, Rydalmere and West Ryde faced off in the final. Unfortunately the weather came down in Rydalmere’s favour, and despite West Ryde’s attempt at drying the pitch, Saturday was rained out. Thanks again to Andy Thomas’s efforts at drying the pitch, play was to begin on time on Sunday and a full 75 overs was able to be played. West Ryde bowled first in their quest to bowl Rydalmere out on a damp pitch. Fortunately for Rydalmere, they scored 145 in 60 overs leaving West Ryde 12 overs to get 145. Josh Raven top scored with 45 and all other batters chipped in with either runs or batting overs out. The old guard of Neville and Egan led the wicket takers.

With nothing to lose West Ryde came out swinging. After getting away a few early blows, it ultimately came to nothing and at the end of the day, umpires called bad light with West Ryde 8/61 off 10 overs. Congratulations to Rydalmere who once again stood up when it mattered and took home the inaugural NCU premiership.

I sincerely thank the other 1st grade teams – North Ryde RSL, West Ryde Rovers, Cammeray, Kirribilli Crusaders and West Pymble for playing competitive cricket all year and within the true Spirit of Cricket.

Given this was the first season of a joint competition, I would like to thank everyone from the committee of the NDCA & NCU. In particular I thank Paul Stapleton, Philip Azize, Paul Vanderlight and Craig Menzies from the NDCA for making the NCU possible on such short notice. This was one of the most enjoyable seasons in recent memory and it is in no small part thanks to these guys. I know all the captains enjoyed facing new opposition on new pitches and with UMPIRES  every week.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable year and I look forward to competing again next year when everyone is coming even harder for Rydalmere. Enjoy the off season and we will see you all in season 2014-15.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION A RESERVE…..Premiers: Carlingford Waratah

The 2013/2014 season saw the first play in the newly created Northern Cricket Union ‘A Reserve’ competition. Six clubs, Carlingford Waratah, North Sydney Leagues, Rydalmere, North Shore, North Ryde RSL and Kirribilli Crusaders joined forces from the Northern Suburbs and Northern Districts associations to fight it out from October through to March.

With a new set of playing conditions containing rules from both associations the start of the season was a learning curve for all involved. As the season wore on all players and teams became accustomed and some great cricket was played. The competition was incredibly tight with five of the six teams still a chance to play semi finals in the last round and only minor premier North Shore assured of remaining in their current position.

There were some magnificent individual performances throughout the season including centuries from nine individual batsmen and top scores of 137 from Daniel West (CWCC) and 123 from Michael Irrgang (NSCC). Pradeep Widana- Pathirana (CWCC) showed his class with 392 runs and Vishwanath Kalpathi (KCCC) peeled off 369. With the ball Raja Saluja (KCCC) led the way with 28 wickets and returned the best bowling figures with a devastating 8/37. Chris Mackay (CWCC) tore through the batting order and took 7/40, while Ijaz Aziz (RCC) again proved his quality with 27 wickets.

The Semi Finals saw both higher ranked teams upset as #3 Carlingford knocked out #2 Kirribilli, while #4 North Sydney Leagues ousted #1 North Shore. This set up a Carlingford versus North Sydney Leagues Grand Final which promised to be a great fixture and a fitting end to the season. Unfortunately for both sides the rain arrived and the Grand Final was abandoned without a ball being bowled meaning the inaugural Northern Cricket Union ‘A’ Reserve Premiers are Carlingford Waratah Cricket Club.

On behalf of all the players and clubs I would personally like to thank all those involved with the administration, organisation and running of the competition this year especially those at the NCU, NDCA and NSCA. I would also like to offer many thanks to all the umpires who gave their time to ensure that the competition was properly officiated. Finally, I would like to thank the other five clubs and all the players for a great season of competitive cricket that was played in the right spirit.

Chris Mackay,

Carlingford Waratah Cricket Club

THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere The 2013/14 3rd grade season was one of the most even competitions we have ever been involved in as a team, during our stint with the Rydalmere Cricket Club. With the formation of the new A-reserves competition this year, our competition from last year was dropped one grade below to 3rds but it still essentially contained the same teams, who seemed better equipped to play each other this time around with last year’s encounters still fresh in the memory. This was exemplified during the regular season where there was no particular stand out team and every side ended up beating each other at some stage in the regular season. In fact, the last 3 semi final positions were up for grabs until the last round before the finals!

Every team posed an equal threat and were all equally competitive and up for the fight. We learnt very quickly the hard way early on in the season that no team in this competition is to be under estimated. From the cunning wiles of Carlingford’s Greg Wark, to the Stodgy defence of West Ryde’s Ranga Ratnalingam and the death stares of Scott Whitehead, every team presented inimitable challenges and some truly special characters to play the game against.

On that note, I would like to quickly mention two players who caught my eye and impressed me with their attitude and skill over the course of the year. R. Gopal, the young 14 year old fast bowler from West Ryde surprised us with his pace and skill especially considering his age. Scott Whitehead is another player, from the Vikings; I would like to single out from the other teams. He always gives a 100% percent on the field, plays tough and doesn’t give an inch, but seemed to be a genuine bloke off the field. This also typified the whole Vikings outfit who were a spirited bunch and a worthy opposition in the grand final.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont.

At the end of the regular season the 3rd grade competition table was as follows:

Semi Final #1: Rydalmere (1st) vs West Ryde Rovers (4th)

Our semi final against the West Ryde Rovers at Upjohn Park was a tense affair. Upon winning the toss we chose to bowl first and got off to a slow start with a bowl, conceding 45 runs for no wickets. But with a talented, all round bowling attack like ours we managed to peg them back, primarily with the help of Lala Wijesekera (3-30), Kanchana Attanayaka (5-43), and backed up brilliantly in the field with some astute catching to restrict them to 133. The real challenge however was the run chase, which had been our Achilles heel all season. After having got off to a bad start, we finished off day 1 at 3- 51 with the help of a fine consolidation effort from Lala and Balaji Ravi.

However, the semi final quickly began to unravel in front of our eyes when we lost 2 wickets in identical fashion during the first over of the 2nd day. R. Gopal, the spritely 14 year old fast bowler, wrecked havoc and really made us really work for the runs from that point onwards. Then stepped up the much maligned, enigmatic Nevin ‘Big Bird’ Ahluwalia (43*), who after a nervy start managed to pull his head in and recreate a match winning partnership with Lala (53*) akin to last year’s semi final in the same ground under similar circumstances. The cool mindset and positivity shown to recover the innings from dire straits would go on to play a significant factor in instilling the belief to pull off a similar heist in the finals.

Semi Final #2: Vikings (2nd) vs North Ryde RSL (3rd)

The other semi-final was also a tense affair with Vikings batting first and scoring a competitive 144. C Donnell was the pick of the North Ryde bowlers with impressive figures of 4 for 27, ably supported by the other bowlers – M Waygood, S Hedger, M Harrison and A Harrison - who all picked up wickets.

In response, North Ryde were evenly placed in the run-chase at 3 for 62 and the game was well and truly in the balance. However, North Ryde stumbled losing 7 for 35 to be bowled out for 97. In a superb feat of bowling, the Vikings relied on just two bowlers – S Whitehead 3 for 48 and J Tompsett 7 for 36 – whose 30 overs between them picked up all 10 wickets. This match-winning bowling partnership put the Vikings in the Grand Final against Rydalmere.

Grand Final

The grand final against our arch rivals, The Vikings at Somerville park, was one of the most memorable games I have ever been involved in all my years of playing this game. Once again after winning the toss we backed our strengths and sent the opposition in. We were brilliant with the ball and an early breakthrough from Anirudh ‘Woody’ Venkat helped calm the nerves and helped us focus better at the task at hand. During the 2nd and 3rd sessions of the day our bowlers, once again spearheaded by Lala (4-17) and Kanchana (3-14), did what they do best and skittled the opposition out for 99 runs. It would still prove to be a tricky target however as the persistent rain leading up to the finals resulted in a really slow outfield and thus runs were harder to come by.

16

THE SENIOR COMPETITION THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont.

Our batting again got off to a shaky start with Scott Whitehead running through our top order (with figures of 4-37), leaving it to Lala and Balaji again to begin the rescue mission. The pair managed to put up a brave fight in the closing overs of the first day and we ended up on 3-34 at the end of the 1st day’s play. The second day was a really even struggle between bat and ball but a few quick wickets at the end of the first session left us reeling at 6-55. Step up Adrian Wijenathan. It’s hard to know what to expect from the supremely talented but extremely volatile Adrian at the best of times. But come grand final day with everything on the line, he stepped up and played the innings of his life. The way he got his runs (34*) under such pressure was a real joy to behold and was my favourite passage of play amidst many memorable moments this whole season. To chase the runs down with everyone chipping in and not relying on a big contribution from Lala for once made the victory so much sweeter.

I sincerely thank the other 3rd grade teams – The Vikings, North Ryde RSL, West Ryde Rovers, Carlingford Waratahs, and Meadowbank for playing competitive cricket all year and within the true Spirit of Cricket.

On a more personal level, I would like to thank my Rydalmere boys for the remarkable season we’ve had as a team. This being my first season as captain, the lads certainly made it easy for me and it was a pleasure captaining such a talented bunch of blokes. Winning the semi final/grand final under the immense pressure we found ourselves in at different stages of those games proved to us how much we have developed as a team this last year.

I would also like to thank the NDCA for organising this worthy competition. In particular, I thank Paul Stapleton, Philip Azize, Paul Vanderlight and Craig Menzies for volunteering their time to organise such a well run competition. We feel privileged to play in such good grounds against quality opposition. Finally, I would also like to give a special mention to our club secretary, Matthew Roberts, for putting up with our shenanigans over the last year. It’s been a fantastic season overall and well worth all the sleep deprived Saturday afternoons. Couldn’t ask for anything more than socialising with your best mates while playing the game we all love. I’m definitely looking forward to doing this all over again next season.

Wilfred Paul 3rd Grade Captain, Rydalmere Cricket Club

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL

This year the NDCA launched into an exciting joint venture with the NSCA whereby our top 2 grades were afforded the joy of playing on turf wickets.

The NDCA Executive Committee should be congratulated on these innovations and we look forward to the potential of introducing further new teams to the 2014/15 season.

With these changes came a strong and more dynamic lower grade structure where by 4th Grade produced some very exciting cricket.

Rydalmere, Epping YMCA and the Viking Blue teams where the most consistent of the six teams graded in 4th Grade finishing the competition well ahead of the remaining 4 teams North Ryde RSL, Viking Red and a new club to our district Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lanka Cricket team were a delight to play against as they played this great game of cricket in the spirit it should be played. Unfortunately their players list let them down as at times they struggled to consistently have their best player available to compete on a weekly basis- however welcome to our district and I look forward to meeting you on the playing field next season.

The semi final series was made up of (1st vs. 4th) Rydalmere vs. North Ryde RSL and (3rd vs. 4th) Viking Blue vs. Epping YMCA.

Rydalmere had been the front runners for themajority of the season and were favoured to win this encounter. However Semi- finals have a special way of evening up cricket matches. Rydalmere dearly missed their Captain via injury Darren Falla who had an outstanding season with both Bat and ball and unfortunately left their A game behind and were surprisingly beaten in the semi final.

Similarly in the Viking Blue and Epping YMCA Semi final there was a surprisingly convincing win by the less favoured YMCA side over the dynamic Vikings Blue side.

The final was contested by 3rd placed Epping YMCA vs. 4th place North Ryde RSL. The match proved to be a very worthy grand final with a result only being achieved with 9 over left to complete the match.

The toss was won by YMCA who invited RSL to bat on a very green and slow out field, regular wickets fell through out the day preventing RSL from gaining any great advantage until the lower order wagging its tail and the last 2 wickets collecting 34 runs and being bowled out in the late afternoon shadows for 177 off 74 overs, a competitive total.

The next day provided for bright sunshine and a challenging day of cricket the match followed similar pattern to the previous days play whereby regular wickets continued to fall not allowing the batting team to really get on top. Both teams found themselves at 8-143 & 8-144 respectively in their innings.

The match was there for either team to grasp, and grasped it was. 2 outstanding catches turned the match in favour of the North Ryde RSL enabling them to bowl out a determined and valiant YMCA side just 20 runs short of a challenging grand final run chase.

Congratulation is extended to all teams who competed in the 2013/14 - 4th grade competition.

Scott Martin

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont.

FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere

The 2013/2014 season proved to be an ultra competitive competition that offered young up and comers the opportunity to play with some of the more experienced folk and in the process learn and teach the finer arts of the game (and as to who exactly did the learning and teaching varied from game to game) with a host of sensational performances throughout the competition on both sides of the experience ledger.

Belying the grade, the competition saw performances and consistency that other higher graded teams would be proud of – most notably a total of 14 centuries and 24 bags of 5 wicket hauls and even two bags of 10 to Waqas Khan and Brendon Morris – the form bowlers of the competition.

At the end of the regular season the 5th grade points table was as follows:

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont.

As shown in the table above, the competition was close at the top with the majority of the 8 teams being in a position to make the finals with 3 rounds to play.

Epping YMCA was clearly the dominant team with 1 loss in the first 11 games (9 wins and 1 draw), however a series of draws leading into the semi-finals opened the door to a potential upset by North Ryde RSL.

The other showdown was West Ryde Rovers Blue against the somewhat inconsistent Rydalmere Wrens with both teams registering 9 victories during the season and Rydalmere securing the advantage of a final round victory against their semi final opponents.

Outside the semi-finals there were a host of strong performances from the other teams including Epping YMCA Red’s and Blue’s. Whilst the Carlingford and West Ryde Whites were unlucky on occasions, they had explosive players who struck fear in the opposition through dominant performances. One such performance was Ian Boesel who decided to single handedly set upon the Rydalmere attack hitting an unbelievable 174 to bring his team preciously close to securing one of the finest wins in recent memory. Chasing a formidable total of 274, Bossel went ballistic hitting a series of sixes to all parts of the ground. He fell lbw 18 short of the target and the team fell 15 runs shy of a great chase at Meadowbank.

There were many other talented players throughout the grade as per the below top ten table which shows a series of consistent performances with bat and ball. Brothers Needham, Stuart, Alice all performed with distinction as did Morris from West Ryde Whites and Rollason from Rydalmere. The form batsman of the competition though was Andrew Alice who scored 386 runs from just 5 digs at a Bradmanescq average of 96 with a high score of 190.

There were also some inspiring performances with the ball – Waqas Khan getting the nod as top bowler of the competition with an ultra consistent performance delivering him 43 wickets with a coveted 10 for in a match.

Adam Dwyer bowled his heart out for Carlingford and picked up 31 wickets as did the youngsters from Epping YMCA – Damith and Vinodh who between them picked up 47 wickets with Damith finishing with an unbelievable average of 9 runs per wicket – far and away the best in the competition.

Epping YMCA had the best bowling outfit in the two youngsters supported by opening quick P Needham and the more experienced J Needham spinning his way to 20 wickets to feature in the top 10.

Semi-final No 1: Epping YMCA Green vs North Ryde RSL

And so on to the semi-finals – where fortunately the games were not impacted by wet weather for a change. This saw both semi-finals completed (which is a rare occurrence) and minor premiers Epping YMCA bringing out its big guns to comprehensively beat North Ryde to progress to the finals. Epping recovered from a disastrous start being 3-10 to post 197 after electing to bat first. In response North Ryde endured a series of top order runs outs and could never get into the game courtesy of some fine bowling by P Needham (4-19) to be skittled for 56 and providing the minor premiers with a grand final berth.

Semi-final No 2: Rydalmere vs West Ryde Blue

The other semi-final was played at Pidding Park between West Ryde Blue and Rydalmere. West Ryde sent Rydalmere into bat – and the Wrens got off to a good start to be 1-80. However, the team could not capitalise on the situation and had a middle order collapse courtesy of some fine bowling by K Stuart to be 8-164, before the tail put on a handy 50 runs between the last 2 wickets to finish with 214. Chasing 214, West Ryde got away to a flyer and were 1-70 at end of Day 1. However Day 2 saw a different picture, with Rydalmere bowling and fielding with intent which saw a number of early wickets, with the Wrens putting together an inspired performance with the ball (Ebrahimi, Goradia and Khan picking up 3 wickets a piece) to defeat the fancied West Ryde Rovers team by 32 runs to progress to the Grand Final.

Grand Final – Rydalmere vs Epping YMCA Green

The grand final was played at Meadowbank and Epping YMCA Green won the toss and elected to bat. They got away to a great start – being 0-60 during the opening session and looking to be in complete control. However Rydalmere won the second session courtesy of L Saedi starring with the ball. He picked up 6 wickets to trigger an Epping collapse. Supported by A Goradia (3-36) the pair bowled unchanged for 28 overs, with the bowling partnership picking up 9 wickets to dislodge Epping for a small but competitive total of 142.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont.

Rydalmere were well placed at 3-60 when stumps were called on Day 1, however Epping knew they had a big chance given they had removed Wren’s danger man Rollason and Mr Consistency Jash Rajeshwaran. Day 2 produced the most thrilling cricket seen – Epping bowled with great purpose and discipline. The young quicks pitched up and made full use of swing. Rydalmere struggled for runs and the first 10 overs saw Rydalmere collapse from 3-66 to 6-78 – with the target of 142 looking increasingly daunting. Vinod, Dhamit and the Needham brothers were at the top of their game as they stepped up their attack – Rydalmere lost wickets consistently and hopes seemed dashed when they lost opener Matt Tauro for 39 to be 7-92.

Rydalmere stalwart Glen Vance announced his intent with a huge six, however was brilliantly caught shortly thereafter leaving Rydalmere at 9-108, Sniffing victory, Epping continued to toil, however initial resistance and then enterprising stroke-play from Rydalmere duo Waqas Khan and Jay Krishnamurthy brought the Wrens closer and closer to the target. The countdown at the sheds had commenced and once down to single figures, player movement in the sheds was prohibited. With 4 runs to get, Epping missed a golden opportunity, squandering a run-out chance and shortly thereafter the Wrens duo brought up the remarkable win with a 38 run, 10th wicket partnership with Waqas on 31 and Jai unbeaten on 10.

Epping tried in vain to secure an unlikely outright, however Rydamere held firm to deny them and in the process securing a well deserved victory – one that was characterised by a strong team display with everyone having a part to play in a classic game of cricket.

We had a great time playing this year – the roster was strong and captainship and management duties were shared by Leigh Rollason, Archit Goradia and Sri Kolla all captaining the club with distinction. Thanks to all the teams for a good season – we hope to play you again next summer.

Finally, I would also like to thank the NDCA for organising the competition each week and in particular Paul Stapleton, Philip Azize, Paul Vanderlight and Craig Menzies. Thanks also to Matt Roberts our Club Secretary and also to the Club Secretaries at each of our Clubs – this is largely a thankless job and you guys all do so well in making sure Cricket happens!

Archit Goradia, Leigh Rollason (3rd Grade co-Captains, Rydalmere Cricket Club) & Sri Kolla

THE JUNIOR COMPETITION ANNUAL REPORT

Another season has come and gone it all seems to go by so fast, but as I look back I feel that overall we had a good year. We can’t do anything about the weather however at least we had blue skies for the finals which I hope everyone enjoyed. When you look at the results it is good to see that the premierships were shared around with only one club, Carlingford, winning multiple premierships (2).

The next few seasons could see changes made to the structure of our competition with many suggestions being looked at as to how we can improve and grow our completion. The incoming committee will be looking for input from all clubs, parents and players.

The Rep season was a little disappointing we had high hopes of building on last season’s results but with poor weather and some very close losses we just failed to have any teams make the finals. It was the first time for a couple of seasons that we entered an Under 10 Foster Shield team and they performed very well with two wins two losses plus a washout to see them just miss the finals. On behalf of the NDJCA I would like to congratulate all the players who gave their all this season along with all the coaches, managers and parents, well done to all.

The ongoing support of the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club through their generous sponsorship is very much appreciated and we very much look forward to continuing and growing this in the future. As a committee we encourage everyone to support the club in any way possible.

This will be my final year as president with my youngest son now finished his junior cricket and is looking forward to playing seniors with his brother and father on Saturday afternoons. I would like to thank everyone for your help over the years with a special thanks to Craig Menzies and Phillip Azize who have both the drive and commitment to grow this association for the betterment of all concerned well into the future.

Game 1 vs Canterbury/Wests at ELS Hall

Canterbury was a quality side and this match was a real test for us. After some solid early order batting from Canterbury, the NDCA boys did well to persist and take important wickets at important times. Tom (2/28) and Cameron (0/19 off 12) were the pick of the bowlers and despite a couple of dangerous partnerships we were able to restrict Canterbury to a gettable 198.

Our chase started well with a 46 run opening stand between Adam and Cameron, but a middle order collapse where we lost 6/30 in 45 minutes to a good spell of spin bowling saw us in real trouble at tea. Julian and Jack (30) returned from tea with renewed composure and put on another 50 run stand, but the earlier middle order problems proved to be fatal when we were bowled out for 130.

Game 2 vs Manly at Weldon Oval

In game 2 NDCA again bowled first and bowled steadily. Matt (2/14) and Cameron (2/36) led the bowling honours in keeping Manly to 217. Michael again kept superbly and for the second match running snaring possibly the most dangerous batsman with a terrific leg side catch.

Cameron led the batting with a tremendous 72 runs and Jack again shone in the middle order with 63 . Jack found valuable middle order support from Matt and Julian to see us home to a 3 wicket victory.

Game 3 vs Hawkesbury at ELS Hall

Hawkesbury had won their first two matches against the sides without wins. A win here would have us back on track for a possible quarter final position. But ELS Hall (and the rest of northern districts) was under water with no play possible. Every other side in our division played.

Game 4 vs Newcastle at ELS Hall, Meadowbank 10

Our only real chance now was a win against Newcastle who was yet to win a game and have the rest of the comp washed out. The rest of the comp was washed out and after a ground move, pre game warm up, more rain, a ground clean up and yet more rain – we too were washed out.

Game 5 vs Parramatta at Pearce Reserve

Parramatta were the undefeated leaders of our pool, we lost the toss yet again and for the first 90 minutes we fielded with 10 players. Doesn’t sound good, but the boys bowled a disciplined line outside off stump drying up Parramatta’s runs and requiring that they flirt with danger to score. As a result Michael snared 4 catches behind the stumps and Wil one in slips. Cameron took 3/41 and Julian 2/30 and Parramatta were restricted to 8/188.

The chase was controlled and solid, until Axel came to the crease. He basically went ballistic smashing 74 with 7 fours and 4 sixes and putting us in such a good position that there was very little tension in the chase, NDCA winning by 4 wickets and more than 5 overs to spare.

We played the top two sides and the bottom one. We missed playing teams 4 and 5 and finished 3rd ourselves, 2 points behind first place. I have absolutely no doubt that without rain we would have continued in the competition to the quarter finals and on a good day gone even further. The pick of our batsmen was Jack Clinton finishing with an average of 53. Cameron, Axel and Julian also finished with averages over 20. The bowling honours went with Cameron Court and Julian Greig who took 5 wickets each (in 3 games). I believe Michael Roberts was the best keeper we saw in the competition and his 8 catches and 3 run out assists in 3 games bears that out statistically. (1 other keeper in another pool took 9 catches – but he played 5 games.) Thank you to NDCA for the opportunity to participate in the Watson Shield in 2013/14. Thanks to the parents who brought the boys on time, scored, made the best afternoon tea in Sydney, brought eskies, tables, helped set up etc and thanks to Adam and the way he led a great bunch of boys who have completed their junior rep experiences at NDCA, received praise each week from both umpires on the way they have conducted themselves and overall been fine ambassadors for the Association. Thanks to the weather for nothing. Greg Wark Coach 34

UNDER 15 – PRESIDENTS CUP

Anshul Baruah (Carlingford Waratah) Patrick Rice (Holy Cross)

Ben DeCaria (Holy Cross) Muneeb Shirazi (Holy Cross)

Nathan Maher (Dundas United) Nikhil Sud (Dundas United)

Andrew Murphy (Oakhill College) Justin Sunderland (Gladesville RSL)

Chris Murphy (Oakhill College) Tushar Verma (Epping District)

Jack Mynett (St Patrick’s College) Hayden Winton (West Ryde Rovers)

Jagath Rajendran (Carlingford Waratah)

For the first NDCA entered a team into the President’s Cup. The team was made up of a mixture of U15 and U16 boys who missed out on making the normal Representative teams plus with a couple of late additions to ensure we had enough players each week as 12 players can bat. While they came together as a bit of a ‘rag tag’ bunch of shy young men, they certainly came out of their shell over the season and ultimately improved their skills and played some good cricket.

While we started very slowly losing our first couple of games, we fought very hard to beat Manly before the Christmas break, then first game back we lost a game we had in the bag….a tough lesson learnt. We then had a washout before finishing the season on a high with a good win against Sutherland. We finished equal 4th but could have finished higher with some more determined batting throughout the season. Here are the game summaries:

Round 1 v Penrith:

We won the toss and elected to bat, and while we lost our first wicket early, Nathan Maher (22), Anshul Baruah (17) and Tushar Verma (19) all got starts and into partnerships but we couldn’t hang in there long enough. Small cameo’s came from Jack Mynett (9), Jagath Rajendran (8) and Nikhil Sud (5), however with 4 x run outs in the innings we could only muster 104.

We started well with Hayden Winton, our left arm quick, getting a wicket in his first over, followed up quickly by another to Jack Mynett to have Penrith reeling at 2 for 8 after 5 overs. However, the Penrith boys batted well and we couldn’t get another wicket before they passed our score in the 34th over. Pick of the bowlers were Mynett finishing with 1 for 20 off 9 overs, Winton with 1 for 21 off 8 and Andrew Murphy 0 for 14 off 4.

Round 2 v Newcastle:

At home for the first time, we again won the toss and batted. We again started slowly, Pat Rice (10), Nathan Maher (24) and Ben DeCaria (16) all looked promising, but shot selection was hurting us. We lost our way after some aggressive cricket from the Newcastle team, losing the last 7 wickets for 25 runs to be all out for 93.

We again needed quick wickets, and Hayden Winton again came through claiming 2 for 11 off his first 5 over spell, with Pat Rice taking 1 for 16 off 5, while Chris Murphy also bowled well but was unlucky not to get a wicket with figures of 0 for 9. However, it wasn’t to be, with the eventual 2nd place Newcastle passing us 4 down after just 22 overs.

Round 3 v Manly:

After winning the toss again, we asked the Manly team to bat first as clearly it wasn’t working for us. A great first ball from Jack Mynett (0 for 10 off 5) unfortunately resulted in a dropped catch at first slip, but it wasn’t long before that man Winton was in the game with a direct hit run out and then taking a wicket with the ball to have them 2 for 4. Pat Rice came on first change and took 3 wickets in his first 3 overs to have Manly reeling at 5 for 40 after 15 overs. Manly then consolidated with a partnership of 86 but the ND boys dug deep and with some good, tight bowling and taking our catches, we 35

eventually bowled them out for 142 runs in the 46th over. Rice was superb, hitting the top of off stump on no less than 4 occasions to finish with 5 for 28 off 10 overs, while Winton took 4 for 30 off 9. Our first year leggie, Muneeb Shirazi, also contributed well bowling a great line and length for 9 straight overs costing just 17 runs. Our other first year player, Justin Sunderland, also took some confidence out of the game and had his best spell finishing with 0 for 15 off 5 overs. A great team bowling and fielding effort across the 50 overs.

It was evident the boys were determined to dig in and stay longer at the crease today. A good start from our openers, Baruah (19) and Tushar Verma (13) got us to 28 in the 8th over, before Maher (51no) and Rice (52no) came together for what would be a game winning partnership. At no stage did they look in danger of getting out, both hitting some lovely strokes to both bring up unbeaten 50’s and passing Manly’s score with a few overs to go. The team was coming together….

Round 4 v Central Coast:

Central Coast were sent in and our quicks were a little wayward, however the spinners came into their own today with Jagath Rajendran taking a lethal 4 for 15 off 10 overs while Muneeb Shirazi took 2 for 38 off 10. At one stage we had CC at 7 for 112 off 35 but couldn’t finish them off allowing them to finish on 8 for 185, about 25 runs more than they should have got.

The top order started patiently again, but as in all forms of cricket, we need to ensure we stick around if we’re going to eat up overs early on. As a result we got ourselves into a bit of a hole early on and it wasn’t until Ben De Caria (57) and Pat Rice (52) came together for the 4th wicket before we were able to get back on an even keel, and at drinks we were 3 for 131 after 37. Needing 55 runs off 13 and with 7 wickets in hand, we seemed to be in the box seat….but as is cricket, we got ahead of ourselves and were all out for 169. Those extra 25 runs or so we gifted to the opposition certainly came home to roost….this was one that certainly got away.

Round 5 v Hornsby – wash out

Round 6 v Sutherland:

We produced our best team performance for the last game at the picturesque Sutherland Oval. We took wickets consistently, didn’t drop a catch taking 5 in total, and fielded extremely well. All bowlers performed very well - Jagath Rajendran 3 for 29, Hayden Winton 3 for 19, Nathan Maher 1 for 8, Pat Rice 1 for 13 and Muneeb Shirazi 1 for 19 – bowling Sutherland out for 113 in the 44th.

The top order batted well with Anshul Baruah (22), Ben DeCaria (30), Pat Rice (20no) and Nathan Maher (37no) all getting amongst the runs. We passed Sutherland in the 36th over having lost just 3 wickets.

Conclusion:

I would like to thank all the parents for making my job easier, getting the boys to training and the grounds each week, and providing afternoon tea. I’d specifically like to thank Craig Murphy for scoring the first few games and Nasir Shirazi and Andrew Maher for umpiring. Thanks also go to Jack Mynett for scoring the last few games after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back in December.

Finally, thanks also to the boys, you all improved your skills, learnt some important cricket lessons the hard way, got to play some serious cricket on turf and worked hard together after our first couple of losses to end up with 2 wins and 3 losses. You all have the ability to play higher levels of cricket if you continue with the same attitude and commitment you brought to President’s Cup. Good luck and thanks.

UNDER 15 – WEBLIN SHIELD

Anthony Adlam (C) (Dundas United) Anthony Melnyk (Concord Briars) Hugh Kermond (VC) (Dundas United) Vikrant Nehru (Carlingford Waratah) Jack Brewer (Oakhill College) Josh Palin (Oakhill College) Lachlan Carfax (Dundas United) James Robertson (Dundas United) Nick Ford (Ryde Hunters Hill) Doug Rogers (Dundas United) Tim De La Hoyde (Oakhill College) Darian Tomasiello (Concord Briars)

Game 1. V. Canterbury-Wests at Canterbury

Our first game was at Blick Oval against Canterbury-Wests who we had played the year before and lost narrowly. We lost the toss and bowled but were in trouble with our over rate. Canterbury – Wests scored 7-218 in 60 overs. The umpires reduced our overs to 52. We accepted the decision and got on with it. Anthony Adlam scored a brilliant 85 and combined with Hugh Kermond (47 not out) to win the game in 50 overs. A great win first up.

Game 2. V. Hornsby-Ku-Ring-Gai and Hills at ELS Hall

We won the toss and batted. James Robertson scored a solid 97 and Anthony Adlam scored his second reps century 103 to get us to 5-280. HKRG also failed to bowl their overs on time, thus they would only be allowed 56 overs. However in a stunning backflip the umpires ignored the competition rules and gave HKRG the full 60 overs ensuring that the game would finish in the dark. HKRG got home by a miracle. A protest was lodged and predictably ignored. Darian Tomasiello bowled brilliantly to finish with 4-20 off 10 overs.

Game 3. V. Blacktown at Whalan Reserve

A rain affected game which we lost after reduction in overs during our innings. James Robertson made a solid 44 and Anthony Melnyk scored 49. Blacktown chased our score down in the rain and mud. A great lesson.

Game 4. V. Fairfield at Fairfield

The wicket was a belter, hard and ready to go. Rain was forecast for later in the day. The umpires did not wish to start.

Game 5. V. Parramatta at Meadowbank

We won the toss and batted. Anthony Adlam was rested down the order to allow others to bat. The move backfired. Only James Robertson made runs and we were all out for 133. Parramatta passed our score 7 down in the 55th over. Doug Rogers bowled two great spells and finished with 2 for 13 off 10 overs. He should have had 6 wickets and would have won the game for us had it not been for some embarrassing catching efforts. In the end a disappointing loss against a team who we had thrashed in the trials.

As a result we finished the season with the lowest ladder position since under 11s. Anthony Adlam was leading run scorer with 212 at an average of 53 and James Robertson scored with 196 at 49. Darian Tomasiello was our leading wicket taker with 9 wickets at an average of 14.3.

I would like to thank Rick Palin for all his work as Manager of this side and Trevor Robertson for his work as assistant coach. It is always a challenge having your son in a rep team and fulfilling managerial and coaching roles as well, and both Rick and Trevor are to be congratulated for their efforts. I would also like to thank the majority of the parents for their positive input throughout the season.

UNDER 14 – MOORE SHIELD

This season’s U14s Moore Shield team was represented by Baxter Holt (c), Jamie McLeod, Harrison Kilby, Jayden Brown, Elliot Carwardine, Brayden Dilley, Cullen Hathurusinghe, Yash Mankad, Shannon Condon, Matthew Bryson, Justin Porter, Sharan Rajendran and Ben Smith. The coach was Phil McLeod and the manager was Paul Kilby. After a season of major improvement the year before, this was an opportunity to consolidate that progress and start competing with the stronger teams. The 6 week pre-season training program and practice games against Parramatta and Hawkesbury, showed we were capable of bowling teams out - particularly with our spin quartet – and there was plenty of depth in the batting. As luck would have it, we drew 3 very strong teams in the competition and the challenge was there to show we could maintain our status. Game 1 v Manly The first game, being away against the reigning champions was always going to be a mammoth task. Manly won the toss and batted first. After an hour they were 0-100 and showing why they were the top team. However during the next 30 overs we pegged them back and held them to 7/208 with Matthew (2-23 off 7) and Baxter (1-16 off 7) the stars. The run chase began disastrously with a run-out off the first ball and we never recovered against a high quality bowling attack. All out for 48 (Shannon 14) meant we were a long way behind. Manly sensed an opportunity for an outright and sent us straight back in and despite another early run-out we managed to get to 1-52 with Jamie (36no) and Cullen (13no) putting on an unbeaten 50 partnership to restore confidence. Nevertheless it was a heavy defeat and showed us the level required to compete with the strongest teams. Game 2 v Blacktown This was a must win game to keep the season afloat. We won the toss and sent them in hoping to hold them to a manageable target. They began slowly but without losing wickets and after 20 overs they were 0-60. We needed a spark. Elliot provided a stunning runout and then Yash took control with his cunning legspin. His return of 5-28 off 10 overs was a fantastic spell of bowling with Jamie providing stumping support – demolishing the stumps 3 times as the batsmen were beaten by flight, turn and bounce. Baxter (2-6 off 7) again showed his all-round talents (after keeping for the first 25 overs) and Elliot polished things off (2-21 off 6.3). A target of 136 looked very gettable and so it proved. All the batsmen got starts with Jayden (23no) and Matthew (33) providing another 50 run partnership after Shannon (18) had held it steady as opener. Victory meant we stayed alive in the competition and headed to Penrith confident of again defeating our bunnies. Game 3 v Penrith After beating them in last year’s competition as well as in the final of the Orange tournament we expected victory in this game and were ready for anything the opposition or the weather gods could throw at us. With heavy cloud cover and light drizzle, Penrith won the toss and sent us in to bat. In gloomy and wet conditions we struggled – 3-26 off the first 15 overs. However we knew that if we could get to 130 then that would probably be enough. Jayden joined Brayden and the partnership slowly built with Brayden scampering singles and Jayden punching the ball through the infield in a fantastic partnership of 53. Matthew then joined Brayden and they carried on the momentum in a brilliant partnership of 59. Brayden was by now chopping anything within reach over cover and point and finished not out on 78 – a match-winning contribution. Harrison finished off with a few flashy boundaries and we had a total of 6/158 off 47 overs (reduced by rain delays). In response Penrith started aggressively and at 0-50 looked well and truly on target. Again we needed a spark. Again we turned to spin. This time Sharan was the man and with 2-20 off 8 overs, he not only dismissed both openers but also put on the breaks and restored proper order. Further rain delays reduced the target to 137 off 40 overs and Penrith needed 20 off the last 6 overs. That they couldn’t do it speaks volumes for our team. There was incredible pressure as the game reached its climax and Baxter, as captain and death-bowler, (2-19 off 8) steered us home combining with Shannon (1-22 off 7) to strangle the Penrith run chase – leaving them 6 runs short. This was a great victory and kept us in the chase for a finals spot but with two very tough games remaining. Game 4 v South Eastern Rain all over Sydney meant this game was washed out. A pity as we were ready for the challenge against a team that would go on to make the semi-finals. Game 5 v Newcastle Our last game came down to the winner making the finals. This was the level we had aspired to reach and now we had destiny in our own hands. The game was played on a very slow field and runs were going to be a premium. We won the toss and sent Newcastle in to bat hoping to keep them to a score around 130. Again the opposition got off to a very solid but slow start and at 1-100 they were starting to get away from us. Baxter showed his value in the field by running out both their main batsmen and then taking 1-11 off 6 overs to drag us back into the game. Jayden finally showed some venom and took 1-25 off 10 overs and Elliot chipped in with 2-19 off 7 to restrict them to 9/135.That meant we needed 136 to make the finals. That we didn’t showed the strength of the Newcastle bowling attack. Jayden

38

(33) and Baxter (22) combined to give us a chance at 3-60 after 25 overs however Newcastle then tightened the noose and we finished at 9/103 – beaten by a very well organised and experienced team. Conclusion This was another great season for the team. With 2 victories and losses only to teams that made the finals, this team is gaining a self-belief that will carry them in great stead as they move into the u15s on turf. We took lots of wickets and held on to many great catches. With more 50+ batting partnerships we can start winning more consistently. There is much potential and next season on turf is a very exciting prospect. I would also like to thank Paul for his untiring efforts as manager in organising all off-field matters. He makes my role very easy. Phil McLeod Coach

UNDER 13 – WS GEE SHIELD

The 2013 -2014 Under 13 Gee shield team was selected from 16 players that trained throughout the off session once a month. The selected team of 12 players and a sub had a good mix of new players and players from previous years. With the usual enthusiasm of a team hoping to better their previous years performance we took on two teams in trial games prior to the season kick off. Firstly we played Parramatta, a team we knew would be hard to beat but not impossible. They batted first and we were fortunate to take the first wicket in the 3rd over. Unfortunately their 2 and 3 batsman settled in and put on 92 runs before the next wicket fell in the 26th over. Finishing 6/217 after 50 with a good bowling performance from Albert 2-25 off 8. We were unfortunately beaten 4-136 but showed potential with a strong 50 from Harry and 22 from Tom. We would meet them again round 2 so we knew we had work to do. We performed a lot better in our second trial against Hawkesbury where we batted first with a strong innings from Tom 26 rtno, Harry 54 rtno and Robert 27 achieving 8/174 . Giving us a strong score to bowl to. Albert brought the magic with 5/11, Robert 3/29 with our wicket keeper Tom responsible for a couple of run outs and catches. The win gave us the boost we needed to kick off the season. Round 1 against Newcastle, fortunately a home game -Phew we dodged that bullet! Newcastle kicked off the batting with a strong 190, as usual we started the bowling strongly keeping the runs down but the score got away as the inning progressed with 7 wickets falling as a result of good bowling from Albert, Alex, Lliam and Henry. Harry and Henry kicked off a good innings with a score of 35 to Henry and then a magnificent and very memorable 106 to Harry. With such an incredibly strong batting performance by Harry you would wonder how we lost. Unfortunately the 190 required was just slightly out of reach scoring 9/180 in the 50 overs. Round 2 vs Parramatta. Winning the toss we elected to bat, after a collapse of wickets Brendan tried to steady the ship at no 8 with a commendable 31 but we were bowled out for 107 in the 30th over. Parramatta reached our score after 34 overs and, as expected, put us back into bat before afternoon tea. Harry and Henry were able to block the tough bowling out scoring 1/80 avoiding the outright. Clearly Parramatta on a good day were better than expected. Parramatta finished top of the ladder in our division. Round 3 vs North Shore, rain rain and more rain. So much so that the manager from North Shore arrived at Sommerville with sand, shovel, mop & blower. They were very determined to beat us and improve their stats! The report about this game could be pages long but the summary is reduced to 35 over’s played during bouts of heavy rain. Tom 30, Henry 25 after facing tough bowling from a strong north shore team. 2/77 after 35. North Shore winning after 24 with a big wicket taken by Naba 1/14 after 6. Round 4 vs Manly rain, rain and more rain AGAIN! With the venue moved due to the extremely wet conditions the team arrived at the second field to wade across puddles to get to the clubhouse. The game commenced in the rain which set the tone for the day! 9/101 to ND’s after 34. Game shortened to 25 overs at some unknown point but was finally abandoned after Manly ‘s 21st over when a bat slid out of a players hand, bowlers had to shorten or restart their run ups each ball and the umpires finally got sick of squeegee’ing the pitch at the end of each over. Some may say we had them worried for a while with a couple of quick wickets by a determined Harry. A very wet rep season- Manly round 4. Round 5 Final game. Home game against Blacktown. Hoping for a win, we were disappointed to lose the toss. Exceptional bowling from Naba 2/5 including 6 out of 10 maiden overs and a couple of handy wickets to Henry saw Blacktown score only 6/127. But unfortunately Blacktown matched our bowling and we were all out in the 47th over falling short by 22. Mention should be made of Brendan and Ethan who helped out Tom wicket keeping throughout the season. Albert had a very strong start with his bowling but was unlucky often through no fault of his own. Lliam often opened the bowling slowing down the opposition run rate. Alex, one of our two spinners who took some handy wickets. Cameron and Jordan could be relied on to score a few runs when the opportunity came, and Surya who substituted for the team whenever required and always made a positive impact. Having selected a winter squad in preparation for the 2014 session it will not be long until we find ourselves starting the next season hoping to better the previous years performance.

UNDER 12 – CAWSEY SHIELD

The 2013/14 season for the U12’s saw much improvement in our squad from our opening season. The regular training over the winter break brought a lot more unity to the team, and gave the captains a lot more experience in setting fields and bowling attacks. We managed to keep our losses to first innings this season, and were unlucky not to win on a few occasions. Last season we experienced some outright losses, so it was good to see the team maintain the bat for the majority of their overs this season, to avoid being sent in for a second innings, batting out the full 50 in most innings; falling short of only a few overs on the occasions we were unable to bat the full 50. With some good additions to our pace bowling attack this season, there is ample opportunity during the winter training to develop their skills and take more wickets, keeping our opposition to lower scores. Kulwant Dhillon has been of great help with bowling training, especially this past season, and has used his experience to help our bowlers develop their individual action and has been integral in the development of our players. We have also seen smarter batting this season, learning the defensive shots as well as picking the right ball to send to the boundary. We have focussed on finding single run opportunities as well, and the team has taken more chances with those than in our opening season, not getting bogged down as much and communicating better in pinching singles. Our fielding has also improved a great deal, and the importance of backing up our throws and fielding in general is being communicated better on the field. There were a few brilliant run outs and some close calls, so developing everyone’s accuracy further will ensure we have a dangerous fielding side. Looking to the future, we hope to combine the recent abilities to stick out the batting overs with more power and shot placement with the bat, so that we can set some unattainable run targets for our opposition. Our team has a lot of passion for the game, and they always enjoy themselves, and encourage each other on their not-so-good days. I have seen their hard work and passion paying off in the level of improvement between opening and second season. I can definitely see them winning some games in the coming season – they deserve it! We thank you for your support in the development of these young athletes and are looking forward to the upcoming season.

UNDER 11 – CREAK SHIELD

For I believe all of the players in the U/11's NDJCA side this was their first your of representative cricket. They were also joined by two new coaches as this was the first that both Matthew and I have coached representative cricket. The goal for Matt and I this year was to develop these boys as cricketers and I think this is the goal for any coach of any player. I believe Matt and I had a lot of fun coaching all the boys and I'm sure the boys all had a great time playing with each other and playing at a higher level. This year we started off by playing three trial games. One against the NDCA U/10's and one against the Parramatta U/11's side and the other against the Hawkesbury U/11's side. In all three of these games the boys I don't think played to their full potential. However there were some single stars. In the game against the U/10's Oscar Kirk stared with the ball taking 3 wickets and striking fear in to the opposition. In the game against Parramatta Jack Wiggins batted very well score 39 runs in very quick time to increase our score. Against Hawkesbury Jackson Hodgetts played very well for his 25. We lost against Parramatta and had a very close game against the U/10's and lost against Hawkesbury. We then started the proper season against Parramatta. We lost the toss and got sent into bat. Only our captain Oscar Kirk could hold his head high after that innings as he batted a very long time and battled for his 15 as we were reduced to a score of 59. The boys all new that we needed to fire up and bowl really well from the start if we were going to win. Oscar Kirk then bowled very well only going for 8 runs of his 4 overs. Then Jack Wiggins and Jack Bakker came in and took a wicket each. Unfortunately they were able to get the runs. They declared immediately putting us back in to bat. This time round was much better for all the boys as they batted much better. The goal was to bat time and all the boys who batted did very well. A special mention to Oscar Kirk who scored 30 runs and batted a very long time. We then played Fairfield-Liverpool in our next game. Unfortunately I was not able to attend this game as I had a HSC game next day but from my coaching partners reports the team improved a lot. We won the toss and elected to bowl. The were a couple of stars with the ball and in the field. Jack Bakker taking 2 wickets and Rogan Await who took two catches as our wicket keeper. They made 193. With the bat we had 3 stars Marley Besgrove(25) Jack Wiggins(20) and Aidan Thomas(20). Unfortunately we were unable to make the runs as we fell short only making 149. However we saw that all the boys were making strides and improving their games. Our next game was against Manly-Warringah away from home. They won the toss and elected to bat. All boys bowled and fielded very well. They dominated in field saving runs and taking their catches. They took 4 wickets for 56 runs with Oscar, Jack W, Marley and Nick all taking wickets and Rohan taking 2 catches at wicket keeper. Unfortunately the rain came pouring down leaving the field unfit for play and the match was abandoned. Again the boys made huge leaps forward this game playing very well against the team at the top of the competition. This got Matt and I very excited about the potential of this team. The next game unfortunately did not even start due to rain. I think all the boys were very disappointed about this and were keen to improve on their games from the last game. Our next and final game was against Hawkesbury away. They won the toss and elected to bat. We started off well dismissing their openers for ducks with Oscar and Alex taking one each. All the boys bowled well and we reduced them to a goal of 9/145. Oscar starred with 3 wickets and was backed up by Alex and Jack B who took 2 each. Unfortunately our batting let us down as we were only able to muster 55 runs. This was a disappointing way to end the season as we felt we had a good chance of winning after that bowling performance. However we were very happy that all the boys tried their best to get the team the win. This season was very up and down for all of the boys. Unfortunately we were never able to put a consistent game to get a win. In spite of all this Matt and I felt very good about all the improvements the boys had made in every game and training session. We think all the boys enjoyed themselves and Matt and I were very impressed and felt very honoured to coach these boys and help them improve their cricket. We urge all the boys to come back next season and hope we can improve on this season next year. We would also like to thank all of the parents who came and watched the boys play. I know they all appreciate the afternoon tea as well as the parents who did the scoring and the ones who provided cover from the rain with their shelter. So thank you to all the parents who drove their boys to Manly in very heavy rain and also who drove them to the middle of nowhere in Hawkesbury. I know all the boys appreciate it. Matthew Rogers and Matthew Goodenough (co-coaches)

UNDER 10 – FOSTER SHIELD

When I first received word that there would be an attempt to field an under 10s representative side, for the first time in the associations history, I jumped at the chance to coach. I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences coaching at club level, and was keen to be part of what is, in truth, a very talented age bracket for northern districts.

Any lingering doubts I had over how many cricketers would show for the trials were quickly swept away, when over 20 boys (and girl!) attended, and allowed us to select a winter development squad, which was a resounding success. I had mentioned to my father many times throughout the year just how much talent some of the boys had, and I don’t think he ever completely agreed with me. That was until he pulled me aside after the first training session and echoed my sentiments – that we did indeed have a talented bunch of kids for the squad.

Of the 24 who trialed, we selected a squad of 14 players, consisting of 5 from West Ryde, 4 from Dundas United, 3 from Epping District and 2 from Carlingford. The side was made up with a mixture of players from the under 9s the previous season, and some players who play up an age in under 11s. The extra experience of playing at a higher level that these players had was instrumental in helping the side grow and improve after each training session and match.

At the NDCA cap presentation night, I stated my belief that the boys would not only be competitive, but would win at least 1 game, which was a big goal to achieve. The laughter it received from many in attendance further echoed the general consensus, that this was a ‘learning year’ for the boys, and that we would get beaten convincingly in every game. I was determined to not let that happen, and along with the help of team manager Marc Reicher, trained the boys harder than ever.

After what seemed a lifetime over the off-season training and playing a few trial games (of contrasting success), the first game finally arrived. Inner West Harbour at our home ground, Cox Park. Inner West Harbour is a significantly larger area for players than ourselves, so the odds of running into a phenomenal side were far greater. The 4 to 5 hours that followed were some of the most enthralling and captivating cricket I’ve been a part of, player and coach. We batted first, and scored 5/184 off our 40 overs, with Tom Reicher (83) and Sam Green (40*) putting on 123 for the 5th wicket.

Defending that large total made Marc and I, along with all the parents and supporters, confident that we would get the job done. We still however, had to bowl and field well, which is exactly how we started, having with 2-8 after 6 overs (T Reicher 2 wickets). The next hour involved much nail-biting, shouting, helping the boys set the field, and just pure shock and awe, as we were treated to an amazing display of power and precision hitting from the opposition captain. He raced past 50 (with 3 of the biggest sixes you could ever see hit by a 9 year old) and didn’t look like slowing down, until Ethan Macdonald produced a match-turning catch to dismiss him, and ultimately swing things back our way. There were more twists and turns along the way, and they eventually ended 2 runs short, 9 wickets down. It was a fantastic bowling and fielding performance, led superbly by Jono Hughes (3-10 off 6).

Fresh off the excitement of winning our first game and going a long way to prove doubters wrong, we went into our following 2 games against South Eastern (eventual premiers) and other heavyweights Blacktown full of confidence. Whilst being beaten in these games, the boys were very competitive and played the game in the right spirit, showing they were indeed a force to be reckoned with. After game 4 was washed out, we came into the final round knowing a win over Georges River St George would probably be enough to secure a coveted finals position.

After sending the opposition into bat, we restricted them to 6/80 off their 40 overs, a fantastic achievement. The boys displayed their considerable talents as a fielding side, and were superbly marshaled by captain Spencer White, who grew more and more into the role as the weeks rolled on. Special mention also goes out to Sam Green, who produced the best individual fielding effort I’ve seen from a boy his age (and a few ages above). Sam also led by example with the bat, scoring 45* in a 80 run stand with Oliver Sheekey (18), who was unlucky to be dismissed as we were on level scores. To win any game at rep level is a great achievement, but to do it only 1 wicket down is fantastic, and is a testament to how hard the boys worked at training and on game days to hone their skills.

43

Unfortunately, as luck would have it, North Shore also won, and they ended up ahead of us (taking the last finals spot) due to a slightly higher quotient. Whilst it was disappointing to miss out on the finals, to finish with a resounding win was a great way to finish what was a terrific season. The boys are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves at training and game days, as they always played cricket in the right spirit and had fun, which is the way it should be. A big thanks goes out to Marc Reicher for helping me with training and games, and most importantly sending out all the messages and emails, which I definitely could not have done without your immense help. Thanks also goes to Dan Green for being the team scorer (everyone loves a volunteer!) and to all the parents for bringing the kids along and being a constant support to myself and the team. I sincerely thank each and every one of you, as seasons such as these don’t happen without the generous help and support I received each and every week. Hope everyone had fun, and I look forward to potentially coaching this age group for years to come.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION JUNIORS

UNDER 14 REPRESENTATIVE TOURING TEAM

NEWCASTLE CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 2014

In January we took the U14’s rep team to Newcastle to compete in the Graeme Malcolm Shield. The squad for the tournament was as follows:-

Jamie McLeod (C) Dundas United Brayden Dilley Epping Bulls Cullen Hathurusinghe Dundas United Elliot Carwardine Epping Bulls Harrison Kilby Dundas United Matthew Bryson St Patricks College Jayden Brown Dundas United Sharan Rajendran Carlingford James Hirsch Dundas United Luke Kayani Concord Briars Ashton Whitting Concord Briars Osman Kayani Concord Briars Phil McLeod Coach Paul Kilby Manager The tournament was played over 5 consecutive days and was meant to be played all on turf wickets. Unfortunately due to the weather we played 2 games on turf and the other 3 games on synthetic. 12 teams competed in what was a strong competition. There were local teams from Newcastle, Far North Coast, Highlands, Newcastle Presidents, Hunter Valley and Central Coast as well as Sydney teams from Hornsby, Parramatta, Penrith, Manly, Hawkesbury and Northern District. Game 1 V Manly at Connolly Park (turf) Our first game was a hot day against a very strong Manly team on Turf. Manly had recently won the rep season final and would also go on to win this tournament as well. Manly won the toss and batted first. Elliott picked up an early wicket and when Matthew picked up the other opener we had them 2/43. Their no. 3 & 4 then put on 80 runs and we were looking down chasing a big score. The boys did make a spirited fight back as they went from 2/123 to be 6/149 , however Manly kicked away again in the heat to take their total to 209. Elliot, Cullen, Matthew and Sharan all took 2 wickets each. Our run chase started badly and we soon found ourselves in real trouble at 5/30. James (43) and Jamie (25) put on a 50 run partnership to help restore order , however in the end we were all out for 112. Game 2 V Central Coast at Kahiba Oval (turf) Central Coast won the toss and decided to bat first. The opposition batting was not as strong as our previous opponents and with some tight bowling and fielding we rolled them for 110. It also gave us an opportunity to give all 12 players a bowl. Osman took 3/7 off 5 overs, James and Elliott took 2 each and Harrison and Ashton finished with 1 each. Chasing a small target can often be tricky and at 4/22 we were in early trouble again. Cullen (14) started the resistance and he was out in the middle for 20 overs. Matthew (23) batted well in the middle order, however at 7/84 and needing 27 runs to win the game was still in the balance. Luke (28 no) and James (13 no) eventually saw us home with sensible batting and their running between wickets was also a key feature. Game 3 V Hunter Valley at Waratah Oval No. 3 Our next match against Hunter Valley was rain reduced to 43 overs each and ended up being a thriller with the momentum changing a number of times. Jamie won the toss and sent Hunter Valley in. His decision paid early dividends with Elliot picking up the 1st wicket LBW and we soon had Hunter Valley in early trouble at 4/34. A handy partnership for their 5th wicket saw them get back into the match and finish with 152 runs on the board. Jayden finished with 4/10, Elliot and Cullen picked up 2 wickets each and Matthew and Ashton picked up 1 each.

45

An early wicket was not what we wanted, however a solid knock from Brayden (29) got us back on track. Jayden (50 no) and Ashton (25) continued on with a fantastic partnership of 72 to have our noses in front again. The loss of quick wickets changed the game again and we found ourselves 8 wickets down and needing 11 runs off the last 2 overs, however Elliot (11 no) who seems to thrive in pressure situations got us home with with 2 balls to spare and only 1 wicket in hand. Game 4 V Far North Coast at Smith Park Far North Coast won the toss and batted first and were soon in early trouble at 3/10 with Cullen taking the first 2 wickets and Elliot taking the other. They did manage to get their total to 119. Cullen finished with impressive figures of 3/14 off 8 overs. Elliot, Jayden, Sharan, Osman and James all took 1 wicket each. Our Openers Brayden (11) and Ashton (18) got us off to a solid start. Luke (24 no) and Jamie (41 no) then took control of the match and saw us home comfortably in the end with an impressive unbroken partnership of 83 with 7 wickets in hand and 11 overs still to go. Game 5 V Parramatta at Darling St Our final game was against Parramatta which was reduced to 40 overs each due to the weather. Jamie won the toss and decided to bat first. Conditions were not great for either team with rain, a wet ground and also long grass. Our openers Brayen (18) and Ashton (13) again got us off to a solid start. Jayden (21) and Matthew (16) continued on in the middle order for us. The real excitement of our innings came at the end from Osman (26 no) which included a couple of big sixes and even a ramp shot off their big fast bowler !. Osman’s power hitting at the end helped the boys get the total to 129 in tough batting conditions. Parramatta got off to a good start in their run chase, however a bowling change saw Jayden take 2 wickets in his first over. Some tight bowling and fielding in the conditions we were playing in had them 7/102. Parramatta’s tail then started to wag and with the equation for them now needing only 2 runs to win with 2 wickets in hand it seemed like the game would get away from us. Osman then showed nerves of steel to run out their number 10 batsman. With the scores tied, the rain coming down again and the ball resembling a piece of soap Cullen stepped up and bowled a perfect Yorker to bowl their last batsmen. The game ended in tie ! All in all the boys enjoyed a successful tournament winning 3 matches, 1 tie and 1 loss against rep standard teams. This was the boys 2nd trip away and they again did Northern Districts proud. The tournament was very well organized by Newcastle Junior District Cricket and would encourage future Northern District teams to participate. Paul Kilby Manager U14’s

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION JUNIORS

UNDER 13 REPRESENTATIVE TOURING TEAM

WESTERN NSW CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 2014

In early January eight families travelled to orange to play in the under 13’s Orange cricket carnival. The team was made up of 6 players from the under 13’s representative team, three talented younger brothers and three dedicated NDJCA cricketers keen to join the group and have a game on a turf wicket. The excitement of the trip and the opportunity to play four straight days of cricket were evident in the boys the first morning of the competition. We headed to a part of town where organizers warned us not to leave anything unattended and if the locals wandered onto the pitch leave them be and call the police if necessary. We were expecting the worst but the field and pitch was remarkably good. On Monday we played Lachlan. After the first day’s play the carnival looked promising for the team as we started with a win. Standout performances by Lliam Ferrier 48 with the bat and exceptional bowling from Brendan Ford 4/5 and Naba Haider. Tuesday vs Penrith. With some families from our team sharing a hotel with the Penrith team we secretly hped that the car park party they held to the wee hours would affect their performance. Sadly this was not the case. We opened the batting but unfortunately wickets were quick to fall. Notable performances by Ethan (29) and Ammar who stuck it out and steadied the ship eventually falling for 73. Liam Doherty showed his keeping talents behind the stumps whilst Naba’s bowling was again impressive. Unfortunately this strong team got the better of us and pasted our score in the middle of the overs. At Tuesday night’s invitational 20/20 our team was represented by Henry Kirk and Brendan Ford. Henry opened the batting scoring 32 and only getting out in the 14th over. Brendan’s wicket keeping was excellent in the second innings. Team alliances were put aside with the spirit of the night, Brendan chirping behind Henry at every opportunity. A fantastic, if somewhat arctic, night was had by all starting at the popular Pizza Hut and finishing on the hill at Wade park. Special mention should be made of parents Clare, Angela , Ian and Mat who participated in the on-field events. Wednesday vs Shoalhaven. Shoalhaven looked like the team to beat, this looked achievable with some excellent bowling from Harry Brooks but unfortunately in the last 20 overs the tally grew and we ended our bowling with 141 to chase. Our inning started with a quick fall of wickets but we eventually got to 122 with some strong seady performances by Brendan, Mitchell and finally Oscar who went out with instructions not get out which he didn’t. We were bowled out in the 45th over for 122. The carnival finished on a disappointing note with our Thursday game against Dubbo being rained out. We headed to the local indoor bowling centre for a final get together before heading home. Thank you to Ian who did an exceptional job coaching the team ensuring all the kids had a great time and that the trip out to Orange was a worthwhile one for all. Special mention has to be made to Oscar Kirk, Harry Brooks and Fraser Garrett who demonstrated that age is no barrier held as they held their own against older and physically bigger players.

On behalf of my other regular umpiring members I present the Annual Report for the Season 2013 - 2014.

This season we had thirteen umpires making themselves available to umpire the Senior and Junior games during the season, including Junior Semis and Finals and the Senior Semis and Finals. A number of these Umpires had passed their ticket last season and were gaining their on-field experience.

We convey our thanks to Peter Tate, John Crane, John Vanderlight, Greg Berriman, Nirmal De Silva, Ian Sinden, Ron Vidler, Christiaan Kennedy, Craig Menzies, Jude Fonseka, Ajit Madan, Homer Paxton, Peter Honeywood and Steve McAppion.

Twelve umpires made themselves available for the Junior Inter District Representative matches which were held on Sundays in October and November. The matches were the Junior games in the Foster Under 10, Creak Under 11, Cawsey Under 12, Gee Under 13, Moore Under 14, Weblin Under 15 and Watson Under 16 shields. We convey our thanks to John Crane, Kieran Gray, Greg Berriman, John Craig, Homer Paxton, Ron Vidler, Nirmal De Silva, John Vanderlight, Craig Hoskin, Christiaan Kennedy, Ian Sinden and Peter Honeywood. We convey our thanks to these umpires for carrying out their duties.

Umpires Greg Berriman, John Vanderlight and Nirmal De Silva umpired the Under 16 Presidents Cup and John Crane and John Vanderlight umpired the Under 13 and Under 15 NSWDCA Girls Carnival. John Vanderlight and John Crane together umpired the Qualifying Final for the Under 13 Gee Shield and John Crane umpired the Under 12 Cawsey Final. Well done fellas on your appointments.

Congratulations to all those who enjoyed the success and experience during the season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2014 – 2015 with a few more qualified umpires.

CRICKET ASSOCIATION

These are the teams who have, according to the Association’s records, played in the competitions during the NDCA’s 101 years of existence. Many of these clubs have vanished into the mists of time, some merged with other clubs, old ones went, new ones joined and many who were there at the beginning are still there and they helped form the nucleus of what very quickly became a strong and successful Association
