MESSAGE FROM

Congratulations to South Hobart Sandy Bay (SHSB) and North Hobart Cricket Clubs on progressing through to the CTPL 1st Grade Grand Final following Semi-Final victories over Kingborough and Clarence respectively. SHSB will be looking to claim consecutive premierships following their drought breaking victory last season while North Hobart will be looking to secure their first premiership since 2009/10. CT extends the best of luck to all competing players taking the field this weekend which also features the 2nd Grade Grand Final SHSB (1st) v Kingborough (3rd), 3rd Grade Grand Final Kingborough (1st) v Lindisfarne (2nd) and the Under 17’s Grand Final North Hobart (2nd) v Lindisfarne (4th). Premiers from the weekend will be joining those who have already tasted success throughout the season. New Town CC recorded a historic victory, ending one of the longest premiership droughts with a thrilling CTPL win over Clarence and continued through the Statewide Twenty20 competition defeating Burnie in the Grand Final. The Bucks success extended to the Girl’s Under 17’s in a thrilling win over South Hobart Sandy Bay. In the CTPL Women’s competition, North Hobart continued their dominance extending their premiership run to four in a row with victory over top of the table Clarence. Carrying this form through, they defeated South Launceston in the Statewide Premiership the next day, also for the fourth consecutive season. Congratulations also to Clarence on claiming the Kookaburra Cup premiership and the 2016/17 CTPL Club Championship, overcoming Kingborough in both, ending the Knights two-year reign as Club Champions. The Roos finished atop the table in 1st Grade, Women’s and Under 17’s Boys whilst also placing second in 2nd Grade and fourth in Under 15’s. Having added the Girl’s Under 17’s to the CTPL Competition in 2014/15, the addition of the Over 40’s in 2016/17 has been a great success. Many former first class and respected first grade players returned to their CTPL Clubs to take part in the competition with Kingborough claiming the inaugural title after defeating SHSB in the Grand Final. Two outstanding seasons with the bat have been justly rewarded with Harry Evans of Kingborough and Erin Fazackerley of Clarence claiming the Emerson Rodwell and Kim Fazackerley Medals respectively. Evans became only the 15th player in the history of the competition to achieve 1000 runs in a season, finishing with a total 1176 runs @ 69.2 which is the 3rd best, only 31 shy of the record set by Ken Burn in 1899/00. Clarence product Erin Fazackerley, niece of Kim Fazackerley after whom the medal is named, scored 506 runs @ 46 throughout the season. Congratulations also to the umpires appointed to the finals round. The ongoing support cricket receives from the TCUSA is always appreciated. Thanks to Club Administrators, coaches, volunteers and parents for the contribution they have again made of the season, and to CTPL Principle Partner Detail First and supporting partners and Carlton United Breweries. Cricket Tasmania also thanks the Hobart City Council, Clarence City Council, Glenorchy City Council, Kingborough Council, Brighton Council and University of Tasmania for their support through provision of grounds for our competition, and the outstanding curators and ground staff in the preparation of playing venues.

CTPL TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2016-17

On Wednesday 21 December 2016, the New Town Cricket Club lifted their first piece of silverware in 44 years following a exhilarating three run victory over Clarence at Blundstone Arena—Bellerive. The match ebbed and flowed throughout the night and fittingly ended in spectacular fashion when inspirational leader Brad Loveluck sealed the win with a fantastic backhanded run-out. "It's pretty special to break through - but more so, its pretty important for the club as a whole. We have a pretty young group and this is massive for them" Loveluck told The Mercury. The Roos were quickly made to regret their decision to send the Bucks into bat after winning the toss, new recruit D'Arcy Short blasting 52 off 25 balls to lift the team to 75 off just 8 overs before he was sensationally caught on the boundary at deep square-leg. Fellow opener (72no off 51 balls) batted through the to see New Town to 7/165 with (3/36) and Fletcher Seymour (2/20) the multiple takers for the Roos. In reply, (2/33) removed James Seymour (0) with the first ball of the innings, as well as danger man Jon Wells (8) in the first three overs of the match to have Clarence reeling at 2/9. With their backs against the wall, Daniel Salpietro (72) and some explosive hitting from Wade Irvine (28) and (25) got the Roos innings back on track and heading into the final over, nine down with only nine runs required. When Salpietro smacked Luke Shelton for a boundary, just four runs were required with four balls to go. Salpietro advanced down the wicket but lost sight of the ball after a miss-hit. Wicket-keeper Loveluck swooped on the ball flicking it onto the stumps, as Salpietro desperately dived back to his crease to no avail. The win was the Bucks first Premiership since 1970/71 when then Brian Eade lifted the CTPL First Grade trophy following a draw against Clarence. D'Arcy Short was named Player of the Match after dominating the match with his 52 as well as bagging 3/24 off 4 overs.

KOOKABURRA CUP GRAND FINAL 2016-17

On Sunday 29 January 2017, Clarence were crowned Kookaburra Cup Premiers following a six wicket victory over Kingborough at Blundstone Arena—Bellerive. Captain Harry Allanby led from the front, scoring a brilliant 104 off 132 balls and shared a defining 170-run partnership with Michael Jones (96no off 103 balls) to help guide the Roos to victory with 10 balls to spare. Earlier in the day, Kingborough won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a beautiful surface. Jason Shelton (34 off 31) set the pace early to help the Knights to 45 before he was adjudged LBW off spinner Daniel Salpietro. Fellow opener Nathan Freitag was joined at the crease by Beau Webster and both combined for a 50 run stand but with runs drying up for Freitag (37 off 74 balls), he tried to increase the run rate and was undone by Allanby’s off-spin with the score on 95. In the form of his short CTPL career, Harry Evans (86 off 84 balls) came to the crease and continued his dominance on the competition, scoring another half-century as well as reaching the 1000 run mark for the season and along with Beau Webster (67 off 86 balls) helped set the Knights up to a competitive 8/261 off 50 overs. Salpietro was best with the ball for the Roos, claiming 4/53 off his 10 overs. The Knights started well with the ball removing Roos danger men Salpietro (18 off 22 balls) and Liam Devlin (5 off 20 balls) early in the innings. The Knights made scoring difficult with first 50 runs taking 72 deliveries. Falling behind the required rate, Jones lifted requiring only 31 balls to hit a further 46 runs finishing not out at the conclusion of the innings. “We probably got to 16 overs left and we did not want the run rate to get above eight an over and it was probably Mike’s (Jones) turn to really step up and he did it perfectly” Allanby said. For his efforts with the bat, Allanby was awarded the Danny Buckingham Medal. The win was the Roos seventh Kookaburra Cup (One-Day) title and their first since 2011/12.

CTPL WOMENS GRAND FINAL 2016-17

On Saturday 25 February, The North Hobart Cricket Club made it four successive premierships following a comprehensive eight wicket victory over Clarence in the Detail First CTPL Women's Grand Final on Saturday. On a beautiful Hobart summer's day at Blundstone Arena, Clarence had no hesitation in electing to bat and immediately threatened to post a large total when Emma Thompson and Erin Fazackerley started the innings strongly posting 32 from the first six overs. In a dismissal in which ultimately changed the nature of the match, Thompson (25 off 31 balls) was unfortunately run out at the bowlers end after Fazackerley punched one back down the pitch and Hannah Short got a fortuitous deflection on the ball. When Fazackerley (15 off 22 balls) was also run out by Short, the Roos struggled to maintain their strong start with Demons captain Belinda Page (3/18 off 4) and Kirsten Allen (2/10 off 4) tightening the screws to restrict the Roos to 7/99 off 20 overs. Chasing 100 runs for victory, Olivia McDonald (2/23 off 4 overs) claimed two wickets in the first over to have North Hobart reeling at 2/2 but an unbeaten 100 run partnership between Veronica Pyke (64no off 48 balls) and Hannah Short (26 off 33 balls) helped the Demons chase the total in just 14 overs to claim their fourth consecutive CTPL Women's premiership "It's a very surreal feeling at the moment to win four premierships in a row and to do it with your closet mates is pretty special" Page said. For her exceptional efforts with the bat, Veronica Pyke was named the Player of the Final for the second time in her CTPL career.

CTPL OVER 40s COMPETITION & GRAND FINAL 2016-17

The inaugural CTPL Over 40’s competition kicked off this season with six of the eight CTPL clubs contesting the competition over four rounds (and a final). Club legends such as Andrew Dykes, Mark Colegrave and Roger Woolley (Clarence), Tom Scott & Gerard Denton (Kingborough), Michael Farrell and Adam Polkinghorne (SHSB), Dan Marsh and (North Hobart) as well as Scott Keeling (New Town) were all welcomed back to clubland to contest in the inaugural season. North Hobart’s leading run scorer Todd Pinnington topped the batting aggregate with 101 runs at an average of 50.50 while Andrew Towns took the most wickets in the competition with 10 dismissals After four rounds, SHSB (16 points) and Kingborough (12) topped the table and qualified for the final, while North Hobart (8), Clarence (8), New Town (4) and Glenorchy (0) rounded out the CTPL Over 40’s ladder. Played at Queenborough Oval on Sunday 19 February, Kingborough were crowned CTPL Over 40’s Premiers following a resounding 41 run victory over minor premiers SHSB. Chasing 149 runs for victory, former Tasmanian Tigers Fast duo Denton and tore through the top order, leaving the Sharks reeling at 3/6. Despite a mini revival from five time Rodwell Medallist Adam Polkinghorne (37no) and Andrew Downton (32) the Sharks were eventually dismissed for 107 in the 16th over. Earlier in the match, the Knights won the toss and elected to bat with Denton (48no), Jarrod Williams (24), Marc Owen (20) and Tim Scott (17) all providing handy contributions with the bat to help post 9/148 off their 20 overs. After winning back-to-back title for the Knights in 1996-97 and 1997-98, Denton said it was great to come back to where it all began. “The Over 40’s competition is a fantastic concept, where you can play with and against all those you had fierce battles with and rekindle great friendships you had in the past” “Without a doubt (the competition) will continue to grow and we (Kingborough) are very much looking forward to competing once again next season and hopefully defending the title” Denton said. 12

CTPL UNDER 15 GRAND FINAL 2016-17

A clinical bowling display from North Hobart's pace attack helped the Demons to a second consecutive CTPL U/15 Boys title following a convincing first innings victory over Lindisfarne at the TCA Ground. After finishing the season on top of the ladder with a win/loss ratio of 11/1, the Demons were ruthless with the ball, bowling Lindisfarne out for just 52 after the Lightning won the toss and elected to bat. Only Ben Thomson was able to defy the Demons bowlers as the sole batsman to reach double figures undefeated on 20 from 67 deliveries when the innings was closed. Izach Collins (4/9), Joe Powell (2/6) and Hayden Nuss (2/8) all equally impressive with ball in hand. In reply, the Demons passed the total three wickets down as top four made starts before number 5, Luke Kreune top scored with 36 from 70 deliveries. The Demon's tail was wrapped up with relative ease thanks largely to Lewis Pyke who collected 4/18 from 8 overs but the Demons had secured a 60 run lead when their innings was concluded at the end of day one. With the match resuming the following week for day two, Lindisfarne needed quick runs but rain threatened to spoil the match. Both teams and their volunteers worked tirelessly to keep the delay to play at just one hour, still providing enough time for Lindisfarne to set a target. Unlike the first innings, they wasted no time scoring freely with openers Jack Gregson (27) and Will Splann (58) wiping away the deficit. Requiring an outright victory, Lindisfarne declared 4/124 from 28 overs, a lead of 64. North Hobart had a minimum 21 overs or 74 minutes to either secure an outright victory or hang on for a first innings victory. An intent to secure the outright was on display early with some appealing stroke play before Jayden Vince (11) was the first wicket to fall with the score on 18. Joseph Kelly (16) and Hayden Nuss (1) followed shortly after to provide a glimmer of hope for Lindisfarne but co-captains Nicholas Davis (19*) and Luke Kreune (5*) saw North Hobart through to the end of day’s play at 3/52 Score Summary: North Hobart 112 (L Krune 36, L Pyke 4/18) & 3/52 (L Pyke 2/21) defeated Lindisfarne 52 (I Collins 4/9, J Powell 2/6) & 4/124 (W Splann 58, J Gregson 27, H Nuss 2/40)

CTPL UNDER 18 VACATION COMPETITION 2016-17

The CTPL Under 18 Vacation Competition was once again contested in January in two pools of four teams over the course of three rounds, with the first and second place team in each pool headed to the Semi-Finals. In the Semi-Finals, University proved to be too strong for Lindisfarne while Clarence edged out North Hobart by three wickets. On Grand Final day, Clarence won their third consecutive CTPL U/18 Vacation Competition Premiership following a convincing 40-run win over University of Tasmania at Kangaroo Bay Oval. After winning the toss and batting first, Clarence were on the back foot early, losing opener Jack Fagan for no score but a match defining partnership of 76 between captain Liam Devlin and Caiden Workman (33 off 49 balls) steadied the ship and helped the score to 84 before Devlin departed for 58 off just 50 deliveries. Following the wicket of Devlin, the Roos lost 8/48 to eventually be all out for 132 in the 37th over, with Lachie Clifford (2/9), Nathan Duggan (2/16) and Jack Cornish (2/33) all claiming multiple wickets for the Lions. The Lions got off to a great start and were on top early in the run chase at 2/66 but Clarence fought their way back into the game through Devlin (2/21) and Workman (2/29) who combined with the ball to remove the top four Lions batters. Adrian Butterworth then put the Lions to the sword claiming 3/15 off 7.1 overs. The tail was wrapped up in quick succession securing the 40 run win for the Roos inside 31 overs. Clarence Captain Liam Devlin was adjudged the Player of the Final for the second consecutive season following his impressive all-round effort. CT STATEWIDE TWENTY20 MENS GRAND FINAL 2016-17

Fresh off their first, First Grade premiership in 44 years in the CTPL T20 competition, New Town added another trophy from the 2016/17 season following a 23-run victory over the Burnie Hurricanes. Batting first against Burnie, New Town lost the dangerous Jon Tattersall and Tawanda Mupariwa early, however a brilliant innings from young gun Joe Randall (38no off 39 balls) helped steer the Bucks to a competitive total of 5/139 off their 20 overs. Chasing 140 runs for victory, the Burnie Hurricanes looked in total control at 0/65 but off-spinner Matthew Dyson claimed the important wickets of opening pair Nick Revell (27 off 25 balls) and Aydan Costelloe (41 off 33 balls) to help swing the momentum back in the Bucks favour. As the required run rate steadily increased, Burnie continued to lose wickets at important stages of their chase and eventually fell 23 runs shy of victory. New Town coach Brad Loveluck strongly believes that the club is on the cusp of a special era and becoming a regular finals contender in all format. "After our loss against North Hobart on Saturday, we had a chat internally and we believe that we are a good enough group to win and be in the top 4. Today was a great victory and a good reward for effort. The support that we have had all season has been incredible, the supporters have all come out of the woodwork which has been great." Loveluck said. For his exceptional efforts with the bat, Randall was named the Dene Hills Medallist as player of the Final.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL 2016-17—SOUTH HOBART SANDY BAY

Following their drought breaking premiership in 2015-16, the South Hobart Sandy Bay Sharks qualified for their fourth CTPL First Grade Grand Final in six seasons after downing Kingborough by two wickets in a nail-biting contest at the Kingston Twin Ovals. After finishing the season in third place, the Sharks needed to win to ensure qualification. Thanks to a coming of age bowling display from youngster Shark Kyle Wisniewski (5/62 off 32 Overs) and explosive batting performance from (125 off 132 balls) secured victory. Bowling first, the Sharks bowling cartel gave nothing away, restricting Kingborough to 6/204 from 96 overs on day one. The Sharks returned on Day Two and eventually bowled Kingborough out on the stroke of lunch for 256. The required target for the Sharks was 257 runs off 61 overs A sensational catch from helped removed Matt Clark (12 off 13 balls), however, Stuart Martin joined Dunk at the crease and combined for a quick-fire 108 run partnership before Martin (32 off 44 balls) was dismissed by Alex Vincent. Dunk continued to bludgeon the attack and eventually reached triple figures for the first time in Sharks colours, however, the match tightened with the Knights removing Sean Willis (24), Harry Nichols (15), Lachie Fraser (3) and Dunk to have the Sharks at 5/241 with 16 runs still to chase. The Knights kept on fighting and took quick wickets , however a composed knock from (22no) and Wills Thompson steered the Sharks over the line with more than four overs remaining.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL 2016-17—NORTH HOBART

North Hobart returned to finals after a four year layoff after finishing in fourth position at the end of the home and away fixture. Led by and Alex Pyecroft, the Demons finished with nine wins, seven losses and an exhilarating tie in their Kookaburra Cup (One Day) match against South Hobart Sandy Bay in Round 14. Losing Silk and Caleb Jewell to state duties, the Demons travelled to Clarence in what was a match that was dominated with the ball. After winning the toss and batting, the Demons were able to ground out 166 off 80 overs on a bowler friendly wicket at Kangaroo Bay Oval with Corey Murfet (39), (30) and youngster Luke Williams (23) all providing handy contributions with the ball. With only a handful of overs remaining on day one, the Demons were able to claim the important wickets of Harry Allanby (6) and Jesse Dinnie (3) to have the Roos at 2/26 before stumps was called. Returning on day two, the Demons removed dangerman Daniel Salpietro (16) and the onslaught continued to have the Roos fell 9/96, with the Roos still requiring a further 60 runs for victory. There was a glimmer of hope with Liam Rice (18no) and Daniel Meredith (22) combining for a 41-run partnership but Murfet claimed the important wicket of Meredith to send North Hobart to their first Grand Final since 2009-10.

LORD’S TAVERNERS SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact it is expected to be played not only within the Laws, but also within the Spirit of Game. Any action which is seen to abuse the Spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the Spirit of fair play rests with the captains. After each match in all Grades, the umpires award points reflecting each team’s performance against apre-determined set of criteria that look to reward positive behaviour in accordance with the Spirit of Cricket. At the end of the season the club with the highest points tally received the Lord’s Taverners Spirit of Cricket Award. In 2016-17, the New Town Cricket Club won its third consecutive Lord’s Taverners Spirit of Cricket Award, with an average of score of 6.14 across all grades. New Town’s average score was the highest in U/15 Boys and consistently strong across all Premier League grades. North Hobart (6.11), Clarence (6.10) and University (6.00) rounded out the top four with strong performances across most grades. New Town has now won the Spirit of Cricket Award for the fourth time and since it’s inception in 2003-04, the award has been won by seven of the eight club in the CTPL competition.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK CTPL 2006-07 GRAND FINAL

The final at was an outstanding three-day affair with several final records bro- ken by the two teams; the wicket, another batting paradise, produced the highest aggregate team-score and the winning team, Kingborough, chased and surpassed the highest ever tar- get score – with the loss of just two wickets. It was an amazing final. Adam French won the toss and looking to get first chance to extract any moisture and pace from the track, opted to send SHSB to bat. It looked like being a poor decision when the opening batsmen, Stuart Martin and Jon Sales established a new first wicket partnership in the final – when Sales was dismissed the pair had added 142, with Sales scoring only 16 in 2 1/2 hours at the crease. Martin, who’d never scored a century in his life, was relentless and thrashed the Knight’s attack to all parts of the oval. When he was dismissed after 256 minutes for 180, the third highest individual score ina final, with the score at 251/5 he’d scored 72% of the team score. His innings off 195 balls included 28 fours and three sixes. Tasmanian vice-captain George Bailey had obviously celebrated the Tasmanian Tigers victory too well and stayed at the wicket for just one ball – snicking a good one from Luke Swards to the keeper. However, Adam Polkinghorne (62) demonstrated his all-round skills to push the score at a run-a-ball and in the last hour, Travis Little (37) and Chris Duval (42) punished a tiring attack to put the Sharks in a very comfortable position at stumps with 390/8 on the board. The wicket was batter friendly so there was some confidence to push the total well past 400 on the second day. Kingborough’s game plan was to knock over the remaining wickets and then set about the run chase, and the plan worked perfectly when Luke Swards cleaned up the tail for the addi- tion of twelve runs with the pace bowler returning the best figures of 4/102 off28 overs. With two days available to them there would be no time pressure – their success chasing down Clarence’s score in the semi-final was a confidence builder for the Knights. By lunch the Kingborough openers Adam French and Rodwell Medalist Stuart Clark had es- tablished a firm base with a smart start of 67 but immediately after the break, Polkinghorne trapped Clark (30) in front. It was 67/1 – enter David Dawson, one of the forgotten Tasmani- an Tigers; the pair were resolute – French combining a strong defence with occasional ag- gression while Dawson put his head down. accrued – mid afternoon Marshall enticed French (60) to flash at a wide only to touch it to the keeper Martin. Fellow former ACT recruit Mark Divin joined Dawson and the pair patiently carried the Knights to 207/2 at stumps with Dawson 69* after 251 minutes and his mate 38* in 162 minutes.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK CTPL 2006-07 GRAND FINAL

In stark contrast to the first day only 219 runs were scored. “We knew we had a lot of time in the game so there was no urgency in our batting”, said Dawson. “SHSB bowled very tight- ly, you can’t take anything away from their bowlers and I think the game is pretty even at the moment. The wicket is quite hard to drive on, it is quite a slow wicket – we knew we had to be patient and wait for the right ball to hit.” The final day was an extraordinary day and the batting feat of Dawson and Divin climaxed a perfect summer for Tasmanian cricket – after the jubilation on the ground seven days earli- er, the outcome of the 53rd final was a fitting conclusion to the cricket season. The partner- ship somewhat laboured for runs through the morning session. By lunch the score had slow- ly progressed to 270/2 but the new ball had been blunted and it was clear the Sharks attack was on the back foot – eight different bowlers used with Targett and Polkinghorne turning their talents to spin for additional variation without a hint of a chance from the batsmen. They each raised their centuries to the applaud of a large and vocal crowd. Following lunch the scoring rate increased and with fielding gaps opening up the pair completed the run- chase before the tea-break. Kingborough’s 405/2 was the fifth highest team score in a final and certainly would have become the highest had the innings continued. There was no need. Dawson and Divin had added 288 in an undefeated third wicket stand – the biggest ever partnership in a final. Dawson’s score of 162* came from 352 balls in 494 minutes at the wicket, and included 24 boundaries. It is the equal fourth highest individual score in a final. His happy partner Mark Divin’s innings of 128* included 15 fours, off 329 balls in 398 minutes. Dawson was awarded the Roger Woolley Medal as the Man of the Match

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK CTPL 1996/97 GRAND FINAL

Andrew Dykes won the toss in the final and sent Kingborough in to bat on a hard pitch sur- rounded by a quick outfield, and the Knights enjoyed a solid start by Tim Scott and Stuart Clark, who were untroubled reaching 29 before Scott slipped going for a quick single and was run out for 21. Michael Di Venuto joined Clark and his aggressive running between the wick- ets quickened the tempo of the match, with 72 runs coming in the first hour; the 100 came up in the twenty-fifth over and Di Venuto’s half-century came up off 46 balls, including five fours and three sixes. Their 100-run partnership was posted in 88 minutes and Kingborough went to lunch well-placed at 133/1. A further 21 runs were added before Clark was caught by Stuart Oliver trying to force Jason Harris off the back foot for 45, including five fours, with the 2nd wicket partnership worth 125 runs. Geoff Valentine made only six before falling lbw to Harris, but that dismissal brought the two Di Venuto brothers together. Their fifty-run partnership took 38 minutes with Peter the aggressor. Michael raised his century with a lovely on-drive from Oliver, his ton taking 191 minutes off 141 balls. Kingborough went to tea at 245/3 and looked capable of scoring close to 400 before the loss of Peter Di Venuto for 52, with seven fours, sparked a collapse. Harris followed up with the wicket of Peter Di Venuto by claiming Hatton for one, well caught by Roger Woolley diving at short backward square leg. Rod Tucker chipped in by bowling Adam French for one before claiming the key wicket of Michael Di Venuto who was well held at deep fine leg by Harris. His fine knock of 138 took 220 minutes, came off 184 balls and included 14 fours. Clarence’s young off-spinner Harris had bowled his team back into contention and took his tally of victims to six with the scalps of Gerard Denton and Chris Gulline to complete a su- perb haul of 6/86 off 30 overs. Clarence received three overs before stumps with the match in the balance but Kingborough should have been in the box seat after at one stage being 272/3 with the Di Venuto brothers seemingly in full control. Veteran Roger Woolley aside, Clarence’s batsmen never seriously threatened on the second day and Kingborough celebrated its first TCA 1st grade premiership for 25 years with a 151- run-first-innings victory. Beginning the day at 2/0, Clarence’s openers Ben Bannister and Grant Costelloe both fell to the pace of Denton within the first ten overs. Bannister was well caught low down by Gulline at second slip while Costelloe was out for six when the ball came off his pad and dislodged a bail. Gulline came on from the river and in his second over cap- tured the prize wicket of Dykes, lbw for 21. Further success followed in Gulline’s next over when Tucker, trying to hook, was adjudged to have gloved the ball to Eric Monaghan and was given out for just four runs to have Clarence reeling at 40/4 following the drinks break.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK CTPL 1996/97 GRAND FINAL

Kingborough missed a golden opportunity to run Woolley out for six, when he and Duncan Hurd were stranded together at the bowling end but the throw went mid-pitch. The pair steadied the innings as Clarence went to lunch at 87/4, but three overs later Hurd was out lbw to Denton for 23, ending a 55-run stand with Woolley. Gavin Cooney and Matthew Clingeleffer quickly followed, both caught by Monaghan off Pe- ter Di Venuto for ducks to leave Clarence teetering on the brink at 104/7.Woolley brought up his fifty and then set about the bowling, being particularly severe on spinner Mark Hatton. With Mark Colegrave he added 55 runs for the 8th wicket, the latter contributing eight, before Woolley’s fine innings ended when Hatton took a good running catch at mid- wicket off Gulline. His 86 took 144 minutes and included nine fours. Stuart Oliver fell in the following over, bowled by Denton and Gulline clinched the game when he had Harris well caught one-handed by Monaghan diving low to his right. Colegrave was unbeaten on nine as the crowd of Kingborough supporters invaded the ground and be- gan to celebrate the victory. Kingborough’s three-pronged pace attack caused the damage with speedster Gerard Denton taking 4/40 off 20 overs, the experienced Chris Gulline taking 4/14 from 9.5 overs and captain-coach Peter Di Venuto wrapping up with 2/46 from 20 overs. Di Venuto praised the efforts of his bowlers. “Chasing 300 in any game is difficult and all I wanted us to do was bowl a good line and length which is what we did. Two years ago Woolley scored 162 and led Clarence to victory chasing 350 plus and all he needed today was some support. Fortunately he didn’t get a lot.”

49

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK CTPL 1986/87 GRAND FINAL

Winning the toss in the final, University made good use of its fortune; it sent Clarence in to bat and by stumps was 77/2 in response to Clarence’s 150. University skipper Michael Street had no hesitation inviting the Roos to bat first on a wicket with a bit of life early in the day. “We knew there would be movement before lunch but I was more worried about the weather closing us down than anything else,” he said. Street could not have asked for more from his team in the field, especially West Indian im- port Eldine Baptiste who took 6/55 in an outstanding display. Clarence had its back to the wall from the start losing openers Mark Powell and Andrew Rog- ers before a run was scored. Powell was caught by Street off the bowling of Baptiste, while Martin Delahunty caught the other opener off Ray Brown. Rob Gartrell was next to go after occupying the crease for 53 minutes for his seven runs. All- rounder Ian Beven knocked up 25 in 97 minutes but the loss of Roger Woolley for one se- verely dented the Roos’ prospects. Captain Roly Hyatt provided some stability with the top score of 43 – he batted for 132 minutes and his innings included eight fours. Michael Granger (30*) and Michael Tame (33) again added respectability to the scorecard but any hope the total would be anywhere near competitive enough was dashed when Bap- tiste dismissed Kemp and Colegrave with successive deliveries. Street took a great catch behind to dismiss Kemp while Colegrave made the long walk back to the pavilion when his stumps were shattered by a yorker. The University openers Michael O’Byrne and Mal Brown ensured the team was given a good start with a 61-run stand, broken when Brown was dismissed for 32. Graeme Farrell added nine before he was caught behind off Gartrell. Hyatt used seven bowlers in the 35 overs sent down in the period to stumps, without further success. The students continued to defy Clarence when play resumed the following day, although there was a slight hiccup when wickets fell at 95, 125 and 127 – all to Gartrell’s medium pace – and University moved into the lead before lunch with four wickets in hand. Before then, Baptiste knocked up a quick 24 while paceman Nick Hansen joined in with 11. Martin De- lahunty (4*) scored the winning runs. Opener O’Byrne, undefeated at stumps overnight with 33, batted through the morning session to finish with 59*. When lunch was taken Uni was 158/6 and play was called off. Rob Gartrell, the sixth Clarence bowler to be used, was the best of the trundlers, taking 4/37 from 16 overs. The spin duo of Hyatt and Beven, so often match winners in the past, had no effect in the final. Beven bowled 26 overs to take 1/53 and Hyatt didn’t bowl beyond the first day.

50

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK CTPL 1986/87 GRAND FINAL

The biggest difference between the sides was Baptiste. Uni skipper Michael Street was full of praise for him suggesting the TCC should look to secure his services as the Tasmanian im- port next season. The final had the feel of déjà vu about it with University defeating Clar- ence in very similar circumstances the previous year. “Last season we were the under-dogs with nothing to lose; this time around we had something to prove as the top team in the competition,” said Street as he claimed bragging rights.

CTPL CLUB CORNER

Season 2016/17 has seen the continued upward development of the Kingborough Knights Cricket Club program under the leadership of our Director of Coaching, Tim Scott. In his 4th season at the helm, Scott has guided the Club to premiership wins in all grades and 2 Club Championships and an increased number of players representing the Club at State level from U/12’s through to the Shield Team. The Club is indebted to all coaches / team managers through all the grades for the time and effort devoted to the betterment of our players and congratulate all involved with the success achieved by our U/13, U/16 and Over40 teams in winning premiership glory this season. To all involved off field, the contribution is acknowledged for the work you have done during a very busy season raising funds to ensure the club survives financially. To our Bar manager Phil Scott for his tireless work throughout the season in making sure all stock was ordered and the hours spent manning the kiosk/bar each week, a big thank you. To a great team of ladies who make up the roll patrol and produce the best salad rolls in the competition. Thank you, your work each week is greatly appreciated. A huge vote of thanks goes out to all our Club Sponsors for their ongoing support, which you have provided to the Club throughout the season. Without your continued support the club would not have been able to offer the opportunities it has to our players to reach their ultimate goals. Most importantly the Club acknowledges the Kingborough Council and its staff for providing us with the magnificent facilities we have both on and off the field- we are truly grateful. To the staff at CT thank you for ensuring that our competition continues to progress and we look forward to the further advancement of our game next season. The Club wishes all teams playing in the Grand Finals all the best.

CTPL CLUB CORNER

The 2016/17 season has seen the New Town Cricket Club achieve success on the field, winning the Statewide and Premier League Twenty20 competitions, and the Under 17 Girls CTPL Grand Final. Director of Cricket Brad Loveluck has continued his drive and excellent work on developing the coaching structures of the club, while Ron Davey, Nathan Wegman, Brooke Hepburn and Fran Sullivan contributed significantly in their coaching and leadership roles. The Men’s playing group has been strengthened by a number of recruits including Twanda Mupariwa, a Zimbabwean national representative player, all whom have fitted in well and given depth as well as complementing the young playing group. They have been ably led by Captain Johnny Tattersall who returned to us this season from Yorkshire, England. Our national and state representatives were Ryan Lees - XI and Tasmanian Second XI, Andrew Fekete and Jake Hancock (Tasmanian Tigers), and D'Arcy Short, Dan Christian (Hurricanes). Our Women's program continues to strengthen under the leadership of Brooke Hepburn and Fran Sullivan. Congratulations to our women who have achieved State selection this season: Brooke Hepburn (Tasmanian ROAR), Brooke and Meg Phillips (Hobart Hurricanes), Emily Molnar and Emma Mannix-Geeves (VC) Tasmanian U18's. Emma was also named in the Cricket Australia Under 18 Female Talent Squad following the Under 18 National Championships. Tasmanian Under 15's representatives were Grace Molnar, Abbie Pou and Hannah Wilson. Fran Sullivan (Assistant Coach) of the team as well. The Bucks junior program is strong and bodes well for the future. Our Milo and IN2Cricket numbers swelled this year, with Captain Hurricane making a couple of visits to our home ground to celebrate our success. Our Boys State representatives were Jesse Willmott and Will Satori (Under 15) and Sam Wright in the U/15 School Sport National Championships Our Over 40’s Inaugural Men’s team includes life members and past players and they have contributed to the inclusiveness of the Club. The positive culture continues to develop in what has been an exciting time both on and off the field. We held a successful Pink Stumps Day in support of the McGrath Foundation, and we continue to focus on our wider community and the benefits that cricket brings to it. We would like to thank the many volunteers whom have contributed to the club in any capacity as coaches, bar assistants, BBQ helpers, social support and the Just Cut Bucks are looking forward to being even stronger both on and off the field next season. Many thanks go out to our major sponsor Just Cuts whose continued support is invaluable for the Club.

LCC values junior development and has provided a pathway for our junior cricketers to advance in their cricket journey. Participation in the ; Milo In2cricket program; and all junior competitions has again been well patronised this season and it is a great sight to see the many children adorn the grounds having fun playing cricket. Unfortunately, we did not have sufficient numbers to offer an U17 and U14 girls teams this season. The Club wishes to fill girl’s junior sides next season and would like to speak to any girls interested in playing cricket. Contact details are on the club’s website (http:// lindisfarnecc.tas.cricket.com.au) under coaching contact tab. This season the Club has hosted a Futures League four-day match between Tasmania and South Australia, and Cricket Australia Female U/18 National Championship games. The Club would like to take the opportunity to thank its many dedicated and tireless volunteers without which the Club would not exist. The Club would also like to thank the following sponsors for their support this season. Lexus/Co-Op Toyota, Spot on Fishing Connection, D&W Electrical & Data Supplies, Central Roofing Supplies, Evan Riseley—Petrusma Property, Beltana Hotel, Apmersand Signs, Brighton Bakery, Scott Devine Welding & Fabrication, The Barber Shop (Lindisfarne) Kookaburra Sports and Commonwealth Bank. Without the valued support of our volunteers and sponsors it would be difficult for the Club to offer cricketing opportunities for the community. The Club will finish the year with our end season dinner to be held on Saturday 4 April 2017 at the Elwick Race Course.

Season 2016/17 saw the re -appointment of Wade Townsend and Belinda Page as Senior Coaches, which has enabled them both to build on the “on-field” strategic plan developed 3 Seasons ago, creating a culture of hard work; commitment; teamwork and development Season 16/17 has seen some great highlights. 5 out of 6 Premier League teams reach semi finals and 4 of those through to Grand Finals; the addition ofthe Under 14 Girls team and the U17 girls reaching the semi final; State Representatives and 1st Grade debuts in both our Men’s and Women’s teams; and the continuous development from many of our coaching staff, who are enhancing their coaching skills through Level 1, 2 and 3 Coaching courses. Our Women’s team has again excelled winning both CTPL and State titles stretching their winning steak to four on the trot. The Under 15 boys also made it back to back capturing the Under 15 title. At the time of writing 1st Grade and the Under 17s are about to embark on their Grand Final journey. Good luck to both teams. We cant go through any Season without the support of the fantastic Volunteers. The hours you give to the Club are priceless and appreciated by all. Finally to our Sponsors: Hope and Anchor Tavern; Honda Central; Gowans Auctions; Banjos Sandy Bay Icon Clothing; Greg Chapple Cricket Centre and The Jack Greene Group – a huge thankyou. Your support is vital to the ongoing viability of the Club and I would encourage every Club member to get out there and support those who support us 64

CTPL CLUB CORNER

Season 2016/17 has seen the sharks continue on from our success in the 2015/16 season. New Club Coach Matt Clark has continued on where Jeremy Smith left off after our maiden first grade premiership last year. The Sharks young playing group has continued to grow and thrive on the leadership and environment that Jeremy has created within the Club. Special mention must also be made to Matt’s assistants - Glenn Hughes (Assistant Coach) and our two ACA coaches, Stuart Saunders and Ali DeWinter. Their continual support and technical coaching has led to both first and second grade making the grand final. Season 2016/17 has been highlighted by grand final appearances by our 1st grade, 2nd grade and Girl’s U/17s teams. The Women’s squad under the leadership of Captain/Coach Linsey Da Costa also made their 3rd finals appearance in a row. Our Girl’s U/17s team also showed that our junior stocks are in good shape with their grand final appearance. Special thanks to Charlotte Taylor and Carrie-Ann White for their coaching efforts. This season has been a development year within our junior ranks as we fielded very young sides. Strong team efforts and some solid individual performances towards the end of the season have highlighted the talent within our junior ranks. We’d like to acknowledge the long hours and hard work by our junior coaches - Glenn Hughes, Chris Gulline, George Seward and Elliot Jemison. We’d also like to thank Kyle Wisniewski, Harry Nichols, Kayden Hine, Perry Mannering and Lachie Bannon for their efforts assisting with junior development. We look forward to continued development of this young group over the coming seasons, hopefully feeding more Tasmanian and Australian representatives in years to come. A huge thank you to everyone involved with the Sharks this season, including our amazing Club sponsors: Ant Manton at Ray White Southern Tasmania, Gordon, Richard, Steven, Aaron and the team at T42, Stuart and the team at Zambrero, B & D Willis Painting, Shannon and the team at Banjos Sandy Bay and Angela at Da Angelo Ristorante. It would be impossible for our Club to survive without the ongoing support provided by each and every one of these people and businesses. Finally thanks to the Board for their continued efforts throughout season 2016/17.
