SHSB will be looking to claim consecutive premierships following their drought breaking victory last season while North Hobart will be looking to secure their first premiership since 2009/10. CT extends the best of luck to all competing players taking the field this weekend which also features the 2nd Grade Grand Final SHSB (1st) v Kingborough (3rd), 3rd Grade Grand Final Kingborough (1st) v Lindisfarne (2nd) and the Under 17’s Grand Final North Hobart (2nd) v Lindisfarne (4th). Premiers from the weekend will be joining those who have already tasted success throughout the season. New Town CC recorded a historic victory, ending one of the longest premiership droughts with a thrilling CTPL Twenty20 win over Clarence and continued through the Statewide Twenty20 competition defeating Burnie in the Grand Final. The Bucks success extended to the Girl’s Under 17’s in a thrilling win over South Hobart Sandy Bay. In the CTPL Women’s competition, North Hobart continued their dominance extending their premiership run to four in a row with victory over top of the table Clarence. Carrying this form through, they defeated South Launceston in the Statewide Premiership the next day, also for the fourth consecutive season. Congratulations also to Clarence on claiming the Kookaburra Cup premiership and the 2016/17 CTPL Club Championship, overcoming Kingborough in both, ending the Knights two-year reign as Club Champions. The Roos finished atop the table in 1st Grade, Women’s and Under 17’s Boys whilst also placing second in 2nd Grade and fourth in Under 15’s. Having added the Girl’s Under 17’s to the CTPL Competition in 2014/15, the addition of the Over 40’s in 2016/17 has been a great success. Many former first class and respected first grade players returned to their CTPL Clubs to take part in the competition with Kingborough claiming the inaugural title after defeating SHSB in the Grand Final. Two outstanding seasons with the bat have been justly rewarded with Harry Evans of Kingborough and Erin Fazackerley of Clarence claiming the Emerson Rodwell and Kim Fazackerley Medals respectively. Evans became only the 15th player in the history of the competition to achieve 1000 runs in a season, finishing with a total 1176 runs @ 69.2 which is the 3rd best, only 31 shy of the record set by Ken Burn in 1899/00. Clarence product Erin Fazackerley, niece of Kim Fazackerley after whom the medal is named, scored 506 runs @ 46 throughout the season. Congratulations also to the umpires appointed to the finals round. The ongoing support cricket receives from the TCUSA is always appreciated. Thanks to Club Administrators, coaches, volunteers and parents for the contribution they have again made of the season, and to CTPL Principle Partner Detail First and supporting partners Kookaburra Sport and Carlton United Breweries. Cricket Tasmania also thanks the Hobart City Council, Clarence City Council, Glenorchy City Council, Kingborough Council, Brighton Council and University of Tasmania for their support through provision of grounds for our competition, and the outstanding curators and ground staff in the preparation of playing venues. Belinda Jefferies – Premier League Chairman Tom Barwick – Premier League Manager 3 CTPL TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2016-17 On Wednesday 21 December 2016, the New Town Cricket Club lifted their first piece of silverware in 44 years following a exhilarating three run victory over Clarence at Blundstone Arena—Bellerive. The match ebbed and flowed throughout the night and fittingly ended in spectacular fashion when inspirational leader Brad Loveluck sealed the win with a fantastic backhanded run-out. "It's pretty special to break through - but more so, its pretty important for the club as a whole. We have a pretty young group and this is massive for them" Loveluck told The Mercury. The Roos were quickly made to regret their decision to send the Bucks into bat after winning the toss, new Hobart Hurricanes recruit D'Arcy Short blasting 52 off 25 balls to lift the team to 75 off just 8 overs before he was sensationally caught on the boundary at deep square-leg. Fellow opener Jake Hancock (72no off 51 balls) batted through the innings to see New Town to 7/165 with Sam Rainbird (3/36) and Fletcher Seymour (2/20) the multiple wicket takers for the Roos. In reply, Dan Christian (2/33) removed James Seymour (0) with the first ball of the innings, as well as danger man Jon Wells (8) in the first three overs of the match to have Clarence reeling at 2/9. With their backs against the wall, Daniel Salpietro (72) and some explosive hitting from Wade Irvine (28) and Cameron Stevenson (25) got the Roos innings back on track and heading into the final over, nine down with only nine runs required. When Salpietro smacked Luke Shelton for a boundary, just four runs were required with four balls to go. Salpietro advanced down the wicket but lost sight of the ball after a miss-hit. Wicket-keeper Loveluck swooped on the ball flicking it onto the stumps, as Salpietro desperately dived back to his crease to no avail. The win was the Bucks first Premiership since 1970/71 when then captain Brian Eade lifted the CTPL First Grade trophy following a draw against Clarence. D'Arcy Short was named Player of the Match after dominating the match with his 52 as well as bagging 3/24 off 4 overs. 4 CTPL TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2016-17 New Town Innings Clarence Innings D Short c W Irvine b S Rainbird 52 (25) J Seymour b D Christian 0 (1) J Hancock not out 72 (51) J Wells lbw b D Christian 8 (9) D Christian c D Salpietro b F Seymour 10 (14) D Salpietro run out (B Loveluck) 72 (51) J Tattersall* c D Meredith b D Salpietro 9 (11) H Allanby* b N Wegman 9 (14) L Shelton b F Seymour 3 (6) M Jones b N Wegman 9 (9) J Ferguson run our (D Salpietro) 2 (4) W Irvine c R Lees b D Short 28 (18) N Wegman c M Jones b S Rainbird 0 (2) C Stevenson c B Loveluck b D Short 25 (9) B Loveluck+ c & b S Rainbird 3 (6) S Rainbird lbw b D Short 0 (1) R Lees not out 3 (5) F Seymour lbw b N Wegman 0 (1) J Dunning dnb D Meredith b L Shelton 3 (6) M Dyson dnb R Meredith not out 0 0) Extras (b 0, lb 3, w 5, nb 3) 11 Extras (b 0, lb 2, w 4, nb 2) 8 Total 20.0 Overs 7/165 Total 19.3 Overs 162 FOW: 75, 92, 116, 127, 134, 136, 146 FOW: 0, 9, 22, 49, 90, 127, 127, 132, 138, 162 Bowlers O M W Runs Bowlers O M W Runs R Meredith 2.0 0 0 33 D Christian 4.0 0 2 33 H Allanby 2.0 0 0 12 R Lees 4.0 0 0 27 C Stevenson 4.0 0 0 32 N Wegman 4.0 0 3 24 S Rainbird 4.0 0 3 36 D Short 4.0 0 3 24 D Salpietro 4.0 0 1 29 J Dunning 1.0 0 0 20 F Seymour 4.0 0 2 20 L Shelton 2.3 0 1 32 Match Result: New Town defeated Clarence by 3 runs.
