MESSAGE FROM

Congratulations to Clarence and Lindisfarne on progressing through to the CTPL 1st Grade Grand Final. Clarence will be contesting their second consecutive Grand Final following last seasons victory over North , while Lindisfarne return to the showpiece for the first time since 2010-11 in which they defeated the Roos.

CT extends the best of luck to all competing players chasing success this weekend. In an exception feat, Kingborough will feature in the 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade and Boy’s U/17 Grand Finals. In 2nd Grade, they will do battle with Lindisfarne who finished the regular season in fourth position. In 3rd Grade, they will take on Brighton who are in just their first season in the Premier League, and in the Under 17 Boy’s, the Knights will again take on Clarence in a rematch of last seasons final.

Those who walk away as premiers this weekend will be joining those who have already claimed silverware this season. North Hobart claimed both the 1st Grade and Women’s Twenty20 titles with the club also featuring in the inaugural National Twenty20 Championships in . South Hobart Sandy Bay added a fifth Kookaburra Cup premiership to their name defeating Lindisfarne in emphatic fashion at Blundstone Arena.

The Women’s Kookaburra Cup was back for it’s second season, with Kingborough claiming victory defeating University also at Blundstone Arena. The 40 and Over Grand Final was also contested between Kingborough and University with the Knights running out winners. The Knights also tasted success in the Boy’s U/15 One-Day grand Final defeating the Bucks. The future is certainly bright at New Town with the Bucks claiming the Boy’s U/15 Twenty20 title for the second year running as well as securing victory in the Girls U/17 Twenty20 Grand Final.

For the first time since 2011/12, a back-to-back Rodwell Medalist was crowned with Harry Allanby winning the coveted award. Allanby enjoyed success with both bat and ball for Clarence and will again lead his side to another grand final. The Fazackerley Medal was won by University’s exciting young top order batsmen Ashley Day for her flurry of runs with the willow.

Congratulations also to the umpires appointed to the finals round and all those who have stood in finals throughout the season. The ongoing support cricket receives from the TCUSA is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all coaches, club administrators, volunteers, and parents for the contribution they have again made throughout the season, and to the CTPL Principle Partner Detail First and supporting partners Kookaburra Sport and Lion. CTPL WOMENS T20 GRAND FINAL 2018-19

In the CTPL Women’s Twenty20 Grand Final played at the TCA Ground, the Roos won the toss and sent in the home side to bat. The Demons got off to a quick start, however some classy by Emma Thompson kept Clarence in the game. Coming off an impressive win in the semi-finals over University, the Roos would have been confident that their talent could chase down the required runs. Stefanie Daffara looked strong with the bat for the Demons (31) and while her opening partner Taylah Purton fell for 5, the incoming captain Hannah Short steadied the ship with an impressive 45 as Clarence struggled to take a for ten overs. The breakthrough came when Emma Thompson (2/15) stepped up and led by example, bowling Short and triggering a quick succession of . Melodie Armstrong managed a solid 20 before being out by Katie Cole, while Belinda Page, , Ella Marsh and Kirstin Palfrey all to make an impact with the bat as the demons finished their 20 overs 6/121. Set a reasonably solid target to chase, Clarence looked in trouble early on losing opener B Grant (2) at the end of the of the third over. Maddison Brooks (15) joined captain Emma Thompson (40) at the crease to pile on the runs, as Thompson backed up her form with the ball to get her side back in the match and with a fighting chance of achieving the required run rate. Some great keeping by Taylah Purton off the bowling of Kirstin Palfrey (1/21) finally broke the partnership as Brooks was dismissed after facing 26 balls, and Thompson was soon to follow with Jayde Davis taking the big wicket. The run rate slowed from there for the Roos, the partnership of Olivia McDonald (20*) and Natalie Pearce (15) looking promising before Beth Langston (1/16) once again stepped up for the Demons, knocking over Pearce and stopping the run chase in it’s tracks. The middle order couldn’t push through the classy bowling of North Hobart as they fell 14 runs short of the required total for victory, their concluding 5/108. North Hobart captain Hannah Short was awarded Player of the Final for her 45 runs off 47 balls. 4

KOOKABURRA CUP (MEN’S) GRAND FINAL 2018-19

A man of the match performance by guided South Hobart Sandy Bay (SHSB) to a comfortable 105-run win over Lindisfarne in the Kookaburra Cup Final. The Lightning started the day with a win with Matt Wilkie calling the toss and electing to bowl first. The opening bowling attack of and Tom Briscoe were economical early, restricting the Sharks to just 11 runs from the first 4 overs before Ellis got the breakthrough with the key wicket of Trent Keep for 1. This brought the Sharks captain Sean Willis to the crease and the pair looked good from the onset, hitting 27 runs from 7 overs at a run rate of 4 an over before Wilkie produced a gem of a ball to have Nichols caught behind for 17. This brought the ever reliable Simon Milenko to the crease who took the game by the scruff of the neck, dispatching the Lightning bowlers to all parts of Blundstone Arena. With Willis by his side, the pair added a further 65 runs before off-spinning sensation claimed the crucial wicket of captain Willis for 35, caught by Briscoe. On the first ball of the very next over, got another breakthrough and this time it was the soon to be Danny Buckingham medalist Milenko for 45. With the Lightning disrupting the Sharks’ momentum, SHSB needed someone to step up. In entered Hamish Kingston. Kingston then set the temp for the rest of the innings blasting a hard-fought 48 in partnership with fellow middle order batsmen Caleb Oakes. The pair added a further 75 before Briscoe took the wicket of Oakes. This sparked a collapse with the Sharks adding another 33 runs for their last 5 wickets to fall on 213 from their 50 overs. The Lightning knew that the wicket was a 230+ and were confident from the outset with the ever dangerous Wright and Matt Dance looking in good touch before Wright was caught behind for 8. The Lightning needed someone to stand up and take the innings by the horns but just couldn’t find anyone in their lineup to do so until it was too late. A collapse of the Lindisfarne batting lineup was insurmountable and despite Freeman chiming in at number 7 with a cameo of 40 off 51, it just wasn’t the Lightning’s day. Sharks quicks Milenko and Wisniewski worked well in tandem with each other and proved to be the difference between the 2 sides with Wisniewski’s tight line bowling producing him an incredible 2-20 from his 8 overs, however it was Milenko with a solid 4—25 from 7 overs that earned SHSB the trophy and himself the Danny Buckingham Medal for Player of the Final.

KOOKABURRA CUP (WOMEN’S) COMPETITION & GRAND FINAL

This season, the Women’s Kookaburra Cup was back following a successful return in the 2017/18 season. Based on the standings from 2017/18 the eight CTPL clubs were split into two pools of four. In the first round, University dismantled Lindisfarne hitting a staggering 0-400 thanks to some hard hitting from Ashley Day (182*) and Sasha Moloney (145*). Lindisfarne lost early wickets and could never recover, being all out for 61. Kingborough also got off to a winning start defeating SHSB by 44 runs at home. Beth Dodd was the best of the bowlers in a losing side taking 4-20 off her 8 overs. For the victors, it was the bowling of Meg Harrison who produced incredible figures of 3-7 as well as Emily Divin who notched up a hard fought 34. And in the other round 1 match, New Town narrowly defeated Clarence away from home by 3 runs thanks to an all-round performance by Emily Mifsud who produced 71 with the bat and 4-23 with the ball. Emily’s performance was matched by Clarence star Emma Thompson who an incredible un-beaten 105 and 3 crucial wickets. In Round 2, University travelled to Kangaroo Bay Oval to take on Clarence and it was again Emma Thompson who starred with the bat notching up an unbeaten 105, with Clarence posting 7-200 from their 40 overs. In response, University couldn’t get going with Thompson once again running rampant, claiming figures of 4-5. In the end, University came up 128 runs short. New Town played host to Lindisfarne with the visitors winning the toss and electing to bat first. New Town bowled tight with Lawler (3-10) & Sullivan (3-9) both starring with the ball, restricting Lindisfarne to be all out for 67. In reply, New Town only lost 1 wicket, reaching the total in the 13 over with Phillips remaining 34 not out. In Pool B, Kingborough made light work of Glenorchy defeating them by 114 runs. Emily Divin (43) and Brook Hepburn (49) were the stars for Kingborough who batted first and set a total of 194. In reply Glenorchy could only manage 80 before being bowled out, Brooke Hepburn the spear head with 3-18. And in the match of the round, SHSB dispatched North Hobart by 7 wickets thanks to some fine batting by (42) and (84*). Stef Daffara was the best for the Demons notching 67 with the willow. In Round 3, University claimed a convincing 9-wicket win over New Town to finish top of the table and lock in a Grand Final. New Town won the toss and struggled from the outset against a rampant University bowling attack. Emily Mifsud (25) and Frances Sullivan (22) tried to post decent scores for the Bucks but it proved too much with the visitors bowled all out for 149. In reply, it was again Ashley Day (82*) and Sasha Moloney (47*) who reached the target and claimed victory in the 17th over. 9

KOOKABURRA CUP (WOMEN’S) COMPETITION & GRAND FINAL

In Pool B Kingborough continued their unbeaten streak in the Kookaburra Cup, making a powerful statement about their finals intentions at Kingston Twin Ovals. North Hobart won the toss and chose to bat first, getting to a strong start as opener Stefanie Daffara knocked a steadfast 38, with the remainder of the top and middle order posting minor scores. However, a bottom order collapse at the hands of some superb bowling by Nikki Carter (4/23) and Lauren J Hepburn 3/23) saw North Hobart all out for 158, unable to bat out their overs. Kingborough came out of the sheds swinging, Emily Divin smashing an unbeaten 70 from 86 to lead the charge. Strong performances from Brooke Hepburn (29) and Bonnie H Davies (23) allowed the home side to chase down the target with over ten overs to spare, guaranteeing them a Grand Final appearance. At KGV Oval, South Hobart Sandy Bay took down Glenorchy on the back of some sensational batting by Corinne Hall and Beth Dodd, whose unbeaten partnership of 328 proved to be the batting performance of the season thus far. Hall’s 157 from 104 deliveries, and Dodd’s 125 off 99 was a record breaking performance and annihilated any hope of a Glenorchy victory as the Sharks cruised to a massive score of 2/362. Glenorchy faced an uphill battle from the outset, dominant bowling performances by Beth Dodd (3/10) and Linsey Da Costa (3/5) knocking over the home side for 66 off 18 overs. It was the Bonnie Davies show on Saturday as the Kingborough captain produced a man of the match performance to guide her side to a 10-wicket win over University. The Knights day started off in the right fashion, winning the toss and sending the students into bat. The formidable partnership of Ashley Day and Sasha Moloney looked good from on the onset and at 0/28 inside 4 overs were cruising until Leah Wierenga got the breakthrough and upended Moloney stumps for 13. Louise Maddock then joined Ash Day at the crease and the par looked solid adding another 19 before Weirenga again struck taking Day’s wicket for 25. Maddock was then joined by Maddie Blazely and the par looked in phenomenal touch hitting to all parts and adding a further 44 before a collapse of sorts hit with the inclusion of Lauren Hepburn into the attack bringing wickets. Hepburn picked up the prized scalps of both batsmen and from this it was all down hill for University losing their last 7 wickets for 41 runs to finish all out for 150. It was then Bonnie Davies and Brooke Hepburn who starred from the very first ball to put on an unbeaten opening partnership and chase down the 151 run total in amazingly just the 24th over with Davis finishing on 67 and Hepburn on 57. 10

CTPL TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2018-19

A dominant 75 by 2017/18 Emerson Rodwell medalist and Demons Captain, helped guide North Hobart to victory over Lindisfarne in the 2018/19 Detail First Twenty20 Grand Final. With a place in the inaugural Fox Cricket National Premier T20 Championships on the line, both sides gave it their all and put on a fantastic show in what was the first time the two clubs had met in a CTPL 1st Grade Grand FInal across all formats. The Demons won the toss and elected to chase, a decision in which they have enjoyed success throughout the course of their T20 campaign. Openers Charlie Wakim and Mac Wright set a strong pace early and were cruising at 0/89 before a loose shot from skipper Wakim sent him packing for 48 after being caught by Kade Applebee off the bowling of Jack White. The wicket of Wakim slowed the blistering Lightning run-rate right down and it took a few overs for new batsmen Ben McDermott to find his feet with opener Wright. With the inclusion of Demon Robb Macmillan back into the attack, it was go time for the Lindisfarne duo with the pair taking 8 off his over. This then saw back into the attack and with it 11 runs was taken off the over. The Lightning were back on track until Applebee again got the ball in his hands, this time off the bowling of Ben Fraser to take the valuable wicket of McDermott for 29. The Lightning middle order tried to salvage the innings and bat around Wright, who remained unbeaten on 67, but in the end were restricted to 6/155 from their 20 overs. With the Demons needing 156 to win, at run-rate of 7.80, they came out of the blocks firing thanks to some hard- hitting from Hurricanes teammates Caleb Jewell and . The pair put on a 100-run partnership before Doran fell for 61 off the bowling of Lindisfarne quick Tom Briscoe. Sixer (17 not out) then joined Jewell at the crease finishing off the job in the 18th over and guiding his side to an 8 wicket victory. Captain Jewell’s dominant display of 75 with the willow crowned him Player of the Final in what was a fantastic finish to the Twenty20 season.

CTPL GIRLS UNDER 17’s GRAND FINAL

North Hobart faced New Town in the CTPL Girl’s Under 17’s Grand Final at the TCA Ground. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Demons looked in trouble early losing opener Jayde Davis on her third ball. The Demons middle order struggled to make an impact throughout the innings, Maya Armstrong the pick of the incoming batsmen with 17. Some quality bowling on the part of New Town by Kasey Gray (2/39) and Sophie Reid (2/14) ensured that the North Hobart batting lineup couldn't post an unreachable total. However the stalwart of the Demons side Ella Marsh powered through the 20 overs, remaining at the crease throughout the entire innings and smashing an unbeaten 54* off 31 deliveries. North Hobart finished with a respectable total of 7/152 and would have felt confident in their ability to defend the total. New Town came out swinging in their innings, as Cassandra McLoughlin (18) wasted little time in getting the runs on the board. The loss of Hannah Wilson for a duck put the pressure back on the Bucks before Kasey Gray (38*) and Matilda Waddington (31) took to the crease to put on a match winning partnership, smashing 7 and 5 fours respectively off their 34 and 26 balls faced. Kasey Gray retired not out as Jezrelle Gray took the crease, continuing the Bucks mighty form with the bat with an unbeaten 25*. Kendylle Byers was the only bowler to make an impact for the Demons with figures of 2/24, as New Town raced to the target runs with 10 balls to spare. Grand Final Match Summary: North Hobart 4/152(cc) (E Marsh 54*, K Gray 2/39, S Reid 2/14) def by New Town 3/154(cc) (M Waddington 31, K Gray 38*, J Gray 25*, K Byers 2/24)

CTPL UNDER 15 ONE-DAY GRAND FINAL 2018-19 The New Town Bucks face of against the Kingborough Knights in the U/15 Boys One-Day Grand Final

Kingborough made the trip to Clare Street Oval to face a New Town side that were in fine form and looking to make it two from two after claiming the T20 Grand Final earlier in the season. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Knights struggled to put the runs on the board with J Scott the top scorer with 35. The New Town bowling attack looked deadly all throughout the innings, J Willmott (2/17), J Britten (2/18) and A Smith (2/24) all sharing in the spoils as the visiting side put up a total of 8/131 from their overs. All assumed that the Bucks would readily chase down the required runs, however a middle order collapse ended all hopes of victory.

Keegan Ryan stayed strong at the top of the order, knocking 40 and top scoring for the Bucks, however the Knights claimed several wickets in quick succession to sap the confidence out of the home side. New Town seemed in shock as some desperate batting on their behalf and savage bowling by the Knights brought their batsmen unstuck. The Bucks limped to 74 runs as they were torn apart by some superb bowling by Kingborough bowlers J Scott (3/12) and B Lawless (3/17), and surely felt as though a great opportunity had slipped through their fingers. In an upset win, Kingborough managed to pull a victory out of the bag thanks to their prowess with the ball and fighting spirit in not letting the game lie.

CTPL UNDER 15 T20 GRAND FINAL 2018-19

A solid knock from Bailey Jenkins and some fantastic bowling by and Benjamin Strong led New Town to victory over Clarence in the 2018/19 Boys Under 15 Twenty20 Final. With New Town winning the toss and electing to bat, the Bucks looked strong early with openers Keegan Ryan and Bailey Jenkins blasting to all parts. Inside 5 overs, New Town were 0/41 and cruising before Josh Curtis caught Keegan Ryan in front for 25. This bought captain Jesse Wilmott to the crease with the pair adding 28 runs before Wilmott was run out for 8. This brought newly crowned Women’s Tigers debutant Amy Smith to the crease. Bailey Jenkins then took matters into his own hands producing a fine half before being caught by Clarence fielder Rogan Dobie off the bowling of Josh Curtis for 56. Bucks keeper Brayden Butler then took to the Clarence bowlers who blasted 12 runs in the final over to get New Town 3/139 from their allotted 20 overs. Clarence then set out to chase down the total set by New Town and looked strong early with openers Ozzie Warmbrunn and Patrick Kenna going at a consistent pace and run rate. Warmbrunn made it to 16 before being caught off the bowling of Amy Smith. This brought Brodie Gluskie in and with Kenna by his side, the pair added another 12 runs before Amy Smith again struck taking Gluskie’s wicket for 12. This started a Clarence batting collapse. The Clarence middle order attempted to build partnerships to take down the total but in the end, their running between wickets was what let them down losing their last 4 wickets all to run outs with the Roos finishing all out for 108 with 3 balls to spare in the innings. Earlier in the day, both teams contested Semi-Finals with Clarence qualifying for the final by the narrowest of margins over Kingborough, and New Town defeating North Hobart. Semi Final 1 Result— Clarence 5/103(cc) (O Warmbrunn 55, C Rawnsley 2/20) def. CTPL UNDER 18 VACATION COMPETITION 2018-19

An unbeaten knock by Hamish James and some fantastic bowling by Andrew Smith led New Town to victory over Clarence in the 2018/2019 Under 18 Vacation Competition Final. With New Town winning the toss and sending in Clarence to bat, things looked bad for the Roos early on after losing four wickets in the opening twenty minutes. Andrew Smith starred for the New Town bowling attack and looked to close the Roos innings early, taking 3 wickets for 12 off 8 overs, including 4 maidens. However, some stalwart batting and impressive patience by Samuel Banks, who remained at the crease for nearly two hours to post an unbeaten total of 80 from 103 deliveries kept the hopes of Clarence alive. Partners Thomas Vaughan (17) and Ryan Borsboom (18) stayed in the match long enough for Banks to get to work, hitting five fours in his hard-fought innings before falling to the bowling of Hamish James, who ended his spell with figures of 2/39. Clarence managed to bat out their 40 overs, finishing with a credible 8/142 and putting them in the hunt for a Grand Final victory. While the New Town bowling attack looked dangerous all day, the Bucks batsmen got off to a less than desirable start, Chrisenthus Kahatapitikanamalage for 2 (run out), Jayden Vince for 3 and Jye Menzie for 0 (Ryan Borsboom). Things looked even worse when Sam Wright fell to Lachlan Borsboom for 19, after staying at the crease for 39 balls. Ryan Borsboom starred for Clarence with the ball, ending with figures of 3/11 off 8 overs, including 3 maidens. But it was the Bucks middle order who stood firm, forming several solid partnerships with contributions from many. Hamish James knocked an unbeaten 44 from 78 deliveries, joined at the crease at various stages by William Sartori (11), Jaythan Poulson (31) and Joshua Jones (21), who smashed two sixes off his 14 balls faced to clinch what was a very close match. New Town came away from the match with a final score of 6/143, with 1.4 overs to spare in the innings. Match Summary: New Town 6/143 (H James 44*, J Poulson 31, R Borsboom 3/11) def. Clarence 8/142(cc) (S Banks 80*, A Smith 3/12, H James 2/39) For his all round efforts throughout the competition, was awarded the player of the series on 11 votes, closely followed by Jake Williams and Lachlan Newland both of North Hobart on 10 votes.

CTPL 40s & OVER COMPETITION & GRAND FINAL 2018-19

The Detail First CTPL 40s and Over competition was once again contested this season with five CTPL clubs participating over four rounds and at the end of the regular season, Kingborough (13) finished atop of the ladder, followed closely by University (12), Clarence (4), Glenorchy (4) and South Hobart Sandy Bay (0) With a number of former club stars on display for both teams, Kingborough and University clashed in the Grand Final at Kingston Twin Ovals . Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Knights looked shaky early as they lost multiple wickets early on, T Scott top scoring for the top seven batsmen with 13 runs. Damon Marsh (2/16), Nick Paine (2/19) and Graeme Cunningham starred for University with the ball and looked to have the home side out very cheaply before Paul Vincent and Warwick Ashlin took the crease. Smashing a quick 40* from 21, Vincent was aided by partner Ashlin (27) as they weathered the storm and allowed Kingborough to post a respectable total of 9/138 off their 20 overs. In response, the University batsmen came out swinging, looking to knock over the required total as quickly as possible. (37*), Gus Nandan (25) and Graeme Cunningham (38*) took to the Knights smashing their bowlers all over the park before a middle order collapse allowed Kingborough to take control of the match. The University batsmen were desperate as Josh bean, Shaun Clifford and Benjamin Harrison were all run out trying to get their side across the line, falling 6 runs short of victory in the end as Kingborough ran away with the win. Grand Final Match Summary: Kingborough 9/138 (P Vincent 40no, W Ashlin 27, D Marsh 2/16, N Paine, 2/19) def University of Tasmania 6/134 (G Cunningham 38no, D Wright 37no)

CTPL WOMEN’S TEAM OF THE YEAR 2018-19 Unsurprisingly, 2018-19 Fazackerley Medalist Ashley Day heads the CTPL Women’s Team of the Year after a sensational campaign across both formats. The New South Wales product who was offered a full Tasmanian Tigers contract last May left no stone unturned in pursuit of higher honours and amassed 774 runs @ 110.57 at the top of the order for University. Day, alongside Stefanie Daffara (524 @ 74.86) open the batting for the Team of the Year, with the North Hobart striker’s consistent form leading her side to the T20 Premiership in the 2018/19 season. Corinne Hall and Emma Thompson both to shine with both players averaging over 100 with Hall 455 @ 113.75 and Thompson 535 @ 107.00. This strong start to the middle order is boosted by Thompson’s effectiveness with the ball, taking 11 wickets @ 11.55 throughout the season. Captain Sasha Moloney is an obvious inclusion, having led her side to the minor premiership in the 2019/19 season. With 433 runs @ 113.75, Moloney rounds out the strong . Emily Mifsud continues to star with bat and ball; with 499 runs @ 41.58 and 20 wickets @ 15.95 she is a clear standout all-rounder in any side. Emma Manix-Geeves was the pick of the keepers this year, with 8 dismissals and 195 runs, while all-rounder Brooke Hepburn continues to impress with 349 runs @ 38.78 and 10 wickets @ 16.00. Beth Dodd, Beth Langston and Leah Wierenga make up the bowling attack, Dodd’s versatility with 406 runs and 22 wickets @ 12.77 a testament to her skill and effort throughout the season. Langston, the top Women’s and aggregate for the season had another exceptional year, taking 26 wickets @ 8.73 and cementing her position as the top bowler in the competition. Wierenga rounds out the Team with fantastic figures of 18 wickets @ 13.83. Coach Todd Pinnington gains selection after leading his side to a Premiership victory and maintaining a fantastic record throughout the season.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL 2018-19

Coming off the back of a Grand Final victory in the 2017/18 CTPL season, Clarence continued their dominance of the competition in 2018/19 finishing at the top of the ladder. The side is looking to establish a new ear of dominance and is poised in the box seat to do so. Claiming maximum points twice throughout the season, Clarence was dominant with both bat and ball in many of their matches. Kangaroo Bay Oval continues to be one of the best wickets in Tasmania, while the first-class facilities are a credit to the support team. The side barely missed the Kookaburra Cup Grand Final, finishing in third position and only two points behind Lindisfarne, while they finished on equal points with Lindisfarne in the T20 competition but fell short of the Final on percentage. Their back and forth and fierce rivalry with Lindisfarne promises a fantastic match at Blundstone Arena in the Final. Captain Harrison Allanby led from the front once again after claiming the Emerson Rodwell in the previous season, claiming it once again 2018/19. His 561 runs @ 33.00 and 28 wickets @ 17.79 also place him in the Men’s Team of the Year once again, alongside team mate Michael Jones (398 runs @ 28.43 & 31 dismissals). The Clarence bowling attack has been one of the most ferocious throughout the season, Daniel Salpietro, Daniel Meredith and all showing their class and taking multiple wickets in most games, keeping their oppositions totals well within reach. Jesse Dinnie was a standout performer with the bat as the Roos dropped only four games throughout the season.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL 2018-19

Led by Macalister Wright and Nathan Ellis, a young Lindisfarne side started to build as a CTPL powerhouse in 2018/19 after finishing second on the CTPL First Grade ladder. After qualifying for both the Twenty20 and Kookaburra Cup Grand Finals, the Lightning are looking to go one better in the Two-Day final and add a third First Grade title to their name. it is credit to the leaders of the club, the board and its supporters/volunteers for their tireless work over the past few seasons. Macalister Wright (921 runs @ 65.79) has had an outstanding season for the club, showcasing his prestigious talent by taking home both the 1st Grade batting aggregate and averages awards at CTPL’s night of nights. Nathan Ellis (44 wickets @ 14.91) also followed suit taking home the bowling aggregates award, and along the way terrorised batting line-ups with his express pace and presence at the crease. Perhaps missing star batsman Charlie Wakim (739 runs @ 52.79) at the back-end of the season due to Tigers duties, he will be a dynamic inclusion in the side as the Lightning take on a Clarence side that are looking for back to back premierships and a return to their glory days of the early 2000’s. Having not faced the Roos in the longer form of the game this season, the Final will be a clash of epic proportions as three Team of the Year players (Wakim, Wright, Ellis), in addition to Team of the Year coach Matt Wilkie take on the top ranked side of the season. CTPL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2018-19

The CTPL Club Championship is a reflection of a clubs overall on-field health. The award takes into account results in all grades from 1st Grade to Under 15's in the men's competitions and also includes the results of the Women's and Girl’s Under 17’s competitions. Kingborough and Clarence again duelled it out for the Club Championship in 2018-19 with the Knights finishing on top when it mattered to claim their seventh Club Championship and fourth in five seasons. Kingborough (409 points) had an incredibly consistent season across the board, finishing a top of the U/17 and U/15 Boys (T20) competitions, while also qualifying for finals in the clubs CTPL Women’s (T20 and Kookaburra Cup), 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade as well as the U/15 Boys One-Day competitions. Clarence (397) once again had an excellent season, finishing in second place for the successive season while Lindisfarne (307) and North Hobart (298) rounded out the top four. Fifth place University (288), SHSB (250), New Town (224), Glenorchy (184), Brighton (129) and Greater Northern (23) all complete the CTPL Club Championship ladder for 2018-19.

LORD’S TAVERNERS SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact it is expected to be played not only within the Laws, but also within the Spirit of Game. Any action which is seen to abuse the Spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the Spirit of fair play rests with the captains. After each match in all Grades, the umpires award points reflecting each team’s performance against a pre-determined set of criteria that look to reward positive behaviour in accordance with the Spirit of Cricket. At the end of the season the club with the highest points tally received the Lord’s Taverners Spirit of Cricket Award. Greater Northern claimed the 2018-19 Spirit of Cricket in the club’s inaugural season in the CTPL competition. The side stood out as the clear victors in First Grade cricket, finishing with an average score of 6.61 points from a total of 119 points across 18 matches.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 2008-09

A season dampened by weather before Christmas which produced 13 no-results or wash outs saw North Hobart with a clear lead at the end of the roster with Clarence an equal fa- vourite for the premiership cup. The final standings were South Hobart Sandy Bay 68, Clar- ence 52, North Hobart 42, University (Q1.1012) and Lindisfarne (Q0.9707) 30, Kingborough 22, New Town 20 and Glenorchy 16. Nature played a hand in shaping the final four when play was abandoned on the second day of the final round although University was well placed in its match against Lindisfarne, the big improvers. The Lightning fell off the pace in the second half after leading the table with several impressive wins. Reigning premiers Kingborough lost several senior players after its premiership and struggled all season but success may not be far off as the club’s junior grades reached all three finals. The northern suburbs clubs New Town and Glenorchy had just five wins between them. SHSB won its third Kookaburra Cup in a row and Clarence was successful winning the T20 Cup. A new Statewide T20 KO series involving grade, suburban and country clubs and associ- ations across the state proved a great initiative – the final saw Launceston win a thriller over Clarence. SHSB had depth across the grades to take the TCA Club Championship for the third successive season. Kingborough won 2nd grade, SHSB the 3rds and Clarence took out the U17 grade final. SHSB, minor premier for the third successive season, fell out of the finals’ race again after a poor performance against the eventual premiers, University in the main semi-final at Bel- lerive Oval. State tyros Tim Paine (63) and James Faulkner (80) provided the backbone for the Students’ innings of 277/9; Chris Duval’s 6/73 was a fine effort. In reply SHSB could only reach 230 to give credence to the Combine’s finals hoodoo; five-times Emerson Rodwell Medalist Adam Polkinghorne was a stand out with 115 to finish his TCA career but sadly none of his highly credited team-mates provided any support. In the other semi-final at the TCA ground Clarence struggled against North Hobart’s pace attack to make 221 with English import Tom Flowers unbeaten on 72 and it was no surprise to see Michael Di Venuto (115) and state skipper Dan Marsh (64) lead the Demons to the target for the loss of only five wickets. Favourable weather greeted the teams for the final at Bellerive – it was the first time since season 1977-78 that the third and fourth placed teams at the end of the home and away roster had met in the final. North and University played each other only once during the season – a two-day fixture in round 13 – and the match was a run-fest with North chasing down University’s 315 (Tim Paine 172 retired) with four wickets in hand. The final promised another high scoring affair with respective strong batting lineups up against suspect bowling attacks. Michael Dighton (NH) won the toss and elected to bat but by lunch the final had practically been decide with North in disarray at 89/6.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 2008-09

Hero of the first session was Brad Thomas who was recalled to the team after retiring a couple of years before; he was one of two (Josh Bean the other) to play in the Lion’s last premiership cup in 1999-2000. Thomas was well supported at the other end by Gordon Kerr on a wicket which provided some sideways movement and swing. Two seasons earlier Thomas and Kerr were squaring off against one another in the Huon Cricket Association for Slab Road and Blackmans Bay respectively. Together they teamed to rip the heart form the Demon’s batting. Michael Di Venuto (34) started brightly and looked in ominous form before the introduction of Kerr changed the complexion of the match. With his first ball, Kerr had the former state dasher caught down the leg-side by stand-in keeper, the leaping Rhett Lockyear. Then a few overs later he claimed the key wicket of Dighton who top edged a cut to first slip after thrashing Kerr for three successive boundaries. At the Northern end, Thomas (4/15 from 13 overs) suffocated the life out of the innings with tight lines and length. The 37-year old grabbed two big wickets before lunch when John Rogers dragged a drive onto his stumps and then took Jon Dakin’s scalp when the acclaimed stroke-player slashed at a rising well outside the off stump for Josh Bean to take a juggling catch at second slip in the next over. After the break, Thomas removed retired Tasmanian Tiger skipper Dan Marsh (30) and Ben McIntyre for a duck to have North slump to 114/8. The wicket of McIntyre also had Thomas create more personal achievements, giving him his 300th first grade scalp. Batting at eight, regular opener Russell De Groot (57) recovered from a blow to the helmet from James Faulkner to mount a mini-fightback with a 52-run stand with Rhys Owen for the 9th wicket but when Owen was snapped up by a diving Lockyear off Tim Paine (unable to keep due to a finger injury) who reveled in the opportunity to send down a few medium- pace overs, the writing was on the wall. Rhett Lockyear (69), batting in his usual cavalier style, then drove the nail into the Demon coffin with a run-a-ball knock and although Dighton induced Paine (27) to chop the final delivery of the day onto his stumps, the Lions were in a dominating position with 130/3 at stumps on the first day. Day Two belonged to James Faulkner; resuming his innings at 10*, the talented teenager pummeled the North Hobart attack to score his maiden first grade century to seal the Lion’s premiership. The eighteen-year old all-rounder, who made his first class debut earlier in the season before being forced to the sidelines with stress fractures to his shins, cracked a sublime 153 as University piled on 427 – the club’s highest-ever first grade team score surpassing 415/9 v Glenorchy during the current season. It was also the second highest final’s score in 55 years.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 2008-09

Faulkner was a model of concentration while unleashing his raw talent, playing a near- faultless innings as he hammered the bowling to all parts of the oval. He faced 249 balls in a knock which lasted just under 4 1/2 hours; his innings peppered with 16 boundaries. The highlight of the day was his driving down the ground with anything slightly over-pitched dispatched with ease. He shared a 109-run stand with Scott Nichols (41) for the 4th wicket; 48 with his captain Graeme Cunningham for the 5th wicket; then 59 with Brad Thomas (26) and 64 with Gordon Kerr (22) for the 7th wicket. By the time Rhys Owen (3/80) wrapped up the innings shortly after tea, the Lions had built a 259-run lead and the possibility of the match being called off a day early looked a possibility, but Demon’s skipper Dighton refused to concede and instead took on the near impossible challenge of dragging his team from the canvass. Dighton clubbed a 29-ball half-century, opening partner Jon Dakin smashed four sixes off Tom Briscoe’s first over before being dismissed – caught on the boundary – off the last ball while Di Venuto and Marsh added quick contributions to reach 147/5 at stumps. The formalities were nigh – Faulkner had overnight striker De Groot caught behind in the first over of the third day andsoon after the Man of the Match threw down Clingeleffer’s wicket when the former state keeper had a mid-wicket mix-up with Pat Doherty, before claiming his second wicket when Doherty skied a catch to mid-on next over. Josh Bean then wrapped up the innings as the Demons limped to an innings defeat within sight of lunch. Both captains gave glowing endorsement of the young sensation, James Faulkner. “He is the most sensible 18-year old with a cricket bat in his hand I have ever met.” Lions skipper Graeme Cunningham said. “Even with the ball he runs in and hits back a length. He was probably the quickest bowler in the final getting them into the mid-130 kms plus and hitting good areas. He’s a natural but we won’t have him too often next season with state commitments having priority.” Rival skipper Michael Dighton admitted he’d misjudged the wicket on the first day but also paid tribute to Faulkner’s innings which effectively batted the Demons out the game. “It was outstanding, the way he went about it showed maturity beyond his years.”

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1998-99

The ladder positions after the final roster matches saw North Hobart with 114.61 lead Uni- versity 110.93, Clarence 109.22 and Kingborough 98.52. Minor premiers North Hobart and University confirmed their places in the TCA final after contrasting semi-final results. University defeated Clarence outright by an innings and seven runs while rain washed away any chance Kingborough had of winning its match and defend- ing the title it had won the previous two seasons. But the Knights were up against it. Chas- ing North’s 465/6 declared, they did well to get to 109/1 before the rains came mid- afternoon forcing the abandonment of play. North Hobart’s mammoth innings was domi- nated by state all-rounder Shaun Young who racked up the highest score in TCA cricket for almost a century. His innings of 278 took 315 minutes and included 20 fours and 11 sixes. While the runs flowed at , at New Town it was a different story all togeth- er. After Clarence was dismissed for 82, University achieved a first innings lead (100/4) by stumps on the first day of play. The pitch dominated the second day; University managed to extend its score to 120 with Clarence taking the last six wickets for only 20 runs, then, batting a second time, the Roos were routed for 31, with the University skipper, Brad Thom- as, adding to his impressive first-innings figures of 6/33 with an amazing 7/7 off ten overs. A patient 105 by University opener Tony Daly helped his team to 214/8 at the close of play of the final played at Bellerive Oval. Daly brought up his century with a classic off-drive from the first ball of the 89th over, but added only another five runs before being dismissed; he received 285 balls during his innings, which lasted 319 minutes and included ten fours. Daly received excellent support from Graeme Blundstone who contributed 37 (five fours) in a vital 5th wicket stand worth 109 runs scored in 153 minutes. They rescued the Lions from 54/4 just after lunch and batted through the rest of the session, Daly bringing up his fifty along the way. Mike Smith also provided a useful 20 towards the end of the innings and shared a 31-run partnership with Daly for the 6th wicket. North Hobart spinners Tony Judd and along with accurate medium-pacer Shaun Young shouldered most of the bowling responsibility and maintained a tight line all day. Judd was the most successful capturing 3/67 from 29 overs, including six maidens, while Marsh ended up with 2/51 from his 29 overs, including ten maidens, and Young, 2/24 from 17 overs with six maidens. Myles Harry, who opened the bowling with Young, conced- ed only twelve runs from his nine overs. Sent in to bat, University had the perfect start with Dene Hills scoring a boundary off Young’s first ball; however, the all-rounder took revenge on his Tasmanian team-mate in the fifth over when he trapped Hills in front for eight after the left-hander failed to offer a shot, the wicket falling with the score on 15. Eight more runs were added in the next eight overs be- fore Young enticed James Kingston (2) to edge a ball into the safe hands of Harry in the slips.

48

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1998-99 University skipper Brad Thomas then joined Daly and they carried the score past 50 in the 31st over but, just when lunch was beckoning, Marsh had Thomas lbw for 14 attempting a sweep shot. The Lions went to lunch at 54/3 off 35 overs with Daly looking very secure on 28. Straight after the break George Campbell was caught behind off Marsh for a duck with the score at a tenuous 54/4. However, Daly and Blundstone forged their partnership which pro- vided the University bowlers with a reasonable target to defend on day two. A superb 95 from stand-in opener Ben Donaldson helped North Hobart to victory. Promoted after regular opener Stuart Cobern broke a bone in his right hand while fielding on the first day, Donaldson was never troubled and grew in confidence as his innings progressed. He figured in a match-winning 3rd wicket partnership of 144 with captain Dan Marsh who hit a solid 78. Donaldson’s fifty came up off 100 balls but he missed his maiden 1st grade century when caught in the covers by Hills for 95 with North Hobart within 13 runs of victory. He occupied the crease for 263 minutes, faced 172 balls and hit eleven fours. University played without luck and had a number of close decisions go against it while infrequent showers made it tough for the bowlers. How- ever the Students didn’t help their cause by dropping sharp chances off Marsh and Donaldson. Rowell made the early breakthrough for University, bowling the dangerous Todd Pinnington for three in the third over. The in-form Shaun Young sur- vived two confident appeals off con- secutive balls from Thomas’s sixth over but added only two more runs before being brilliant- ly caught low down by Hills at mid-wicket to have North 34/2 in the 18th over. This brought Marsh to join Donaldson and the pair took North to lunch at 71/2. A heavy shower meant 25 minutes and six overs were lost but it mattered little to Donaldson and Marsh as they batted through the shortened session to reach 158/2 at tea. Marsh survived a close caught-behind appeal when on 39 and Donaldson was missed on 55. Eighteen runs were added after tea before Marsh mistimed a pull shot off Mulcahy and was caught at mid- wicket for 78. When Rowell bowled Myles Harry for a golden duck next over there was a glimmer of hope for the Lions, but Donaldson took to the attack and carried the score to 202 before he was dismissed. Paceman Greg Rowell bowled well to finish with 3/84 off 23 overs and Kieron Mulcahy took 2/38 from 16 overs. 49

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1988-89

The value of completing the roster series on stop can never be overstated. After the previ- ous season’s glitch Clarence was back on top with 64 points, ahead of Glenorchy 54, SHSB 46 and New Town 36. Winter weather greeted the semi-finalists and the memory of the 81-82 and 83-84 finals would have haunted all but minor premiers Clarence. This was to become the first finals series played at the revamped Bellerive Oval. New Town skipper Keith Bradshaw scored his fifth century of the season (110) in the semi- final match against Clarence at Bellerive Oval to give his team a fighting chance of upsetting the reigning premiers, but the effort was in vain. Rain defeated their hopes on the second day after only fifteen overs in 55 minutes were possible: Clarence 27/0 drew with New Town 232. In the other semi-final at New Town oval Glenorchy, with skipper Michael Taylor (71*) in full flight, chased down SHSB’s 124 losing just three wickets along the way. Play on both days was hampered by the wind and rain. Wicket preparation for the final had been restricted so the toss became a critical determina- tion before play in the final at Bellerive began. The coin fell in favour of Clarence and in the space of five overs the match was virtually decided. The news of Greg Campbell’s selection in the Australian cricket team to tour England during the week would have been a wonderful stimulation for the Tasmanian fast-medium pace bowler and he celebrated – not by sinking ales, but by sinking Glenorchy! In those five overs he blasted out four Glenorchy batsmen for only five runs. Campbell finished with 5/34 from an 18-over spell broken only by lunch as Glenorchy capitulated for 92. With the game only 52 minutes old, Glenorchy’s innings was in shambles at 11/5, after Campbell cut a swath through Brendan Wilson (0), Mick Taylor (3), Chris Broadby (1) and Tony Wade (3). In between, his new-ball partner Peter McPhee chipped in with the wicket of Martin Bowerman (3). If there had been any doubts about Campbell’s ability to bowl well under English conditions, then the balls he dismissed Wilson and Taylor with would have silenced them. The one that claimed Wilson pitched on middle and leg and hit off. Unplayable! His other prize was Tay- lor who’d scored 602 club runs and was the man who stood between Clarence and victory. The Glenorchy captain aimed to hit the ball through mid-on but it swung late and took the outside edge and Roger Woolley gobbled it up at third slip.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1988-89

Thank goodness for Martin Kelly – had it not been for his fighting 41, Glenorchy would have been acutely embarrassed. He hung on by pure adhesiveness for 189 minutes and with Tim Bower, whose 20 was the only other -figure score, put on 31 for the 8th wicket. On a wicket milked of its early life by the afternoon sun, Clarence passed its modest target for the loss of openers Bruce Patterson (12) and Peter Schofield (26). By stumps Clarence had a mortgage on the flag by replying with 132/2, with state batsman leading the way with an unbeaten 79. Clarence batted on for only an hour on the following day before the game was called off by mutual agreement of the captains. The hour allowed Shipperd to register his century – he batted for 189 minutes compiling his 103* and hit nine fours. Clarence captain Michael Tame said he didn’t believe winning the toss had been that im- portant. “It was nice to win, but I doubt it was a major factor in the game. We’ve easily the best attack in the competition with guys the like of Campbell, McPhee, Colegrave and Bevan who are capable of putting tremendous pressure on opposing batting sides.” His counterpart Michael Taylor said “Glenorchy lost what little chance it had of getting back into the match by bowling wide of the stumps and not making the Clarence batsmen play enough.’ Clarence won the second, third and fourth grade premierships to take a clean sweep of TCA grades – the first time since Glenorchy had achieved the feat of all three premierships in 1956-57. South Hobart won all three grade titles in 1931-32 and Glenorchy previously per- formed the feat in 1951-52, 1952-53 and 1954-55.

CLUB CORNER The 2018/19 season has seen the rebuild commence for the New Town Cricket Club following the loss of a number of senior experienced male players. Our Men’s program was led by Zimbabwean International Tawanda Mupariwa, with the assistance of club legends Nathan Wegman and Ryan Lees. This year has been about rebuilding and we are proud to focus on our home grown talent. We will be working hard to build on our gains this year and we are looking to achieve the on field success we deserve next year. We strengthened our women and youth ranks and have achieved significant on-field success in these talented teams! Our U15 Boys won the T20 competition and we were successful in the U18 Boys Vacation Competition. Our CTPL U17 girls, U17 boys and U15 boys are all playing finals at the time of writing. The future is bright at New Town! Our Women's program continues to strengthen under the leadership of Fran Sullivan. Fran has represented the club proudly by coaching at the U15 Female State Championships during February this year. Fran is working hard at the club to build a strong female program and provide appropriate pathways for players. We are very proud of all our players and their achievements as teams and individuals. However, a special congratulations go to our players who have gone on to represent the state – Tasmanian Tigers Women’s team – Amy Smith – youngest player to debut at 14 years of age – congratulations Amy! U19 Male State Team: Fletcher Keeling U18 Female State Team: Emma Manix-Geeves, Amy Smith, Grace Molnar, Cassie McLoughlin U17 Male State Team: Sam Wright, Chris Kahatapitikankanamalage U15 Male State Team: Will Sartori U15 Female State Team: Amy Smith, Cassie McLoughlin, Jezrelle Gray, Matilda Waddington The Bucks junior program is strong and bodes well for our future. Our Woolworths Junior and Master Blasters swelled in numbers this year, and all our Junior Hurricanes teams have thoroughly enjoyed their seasons and are looking to further develop next year. A special mention and thanks to our Junior Development Officer, Emily Mifsud for her efforts in the Junior program space. We would like to thank all our volunteers who have contributed to the club as coaches, bar assistants, BBQ helpers, social support or in any other way. Without you, our club would simply not function the way it does. The Bucks are looking forward to being even stronger both on and off the field next season. We welcome hearing from anyone looking to contribute and be involved next year and for players or coaches seeking greater opportunities to grow their cricketing careers.
