Congratulations to Darren and Brendan and the U11’s Premiers back to back after their success last season in the U10’s. Well done to all the players. We also had grand finalist in the U13’s but unfortunately they went down in the final but did their club, coach and parents proud. Of the other teams we had semi-finalists in the U16s and 2nd grade who both bowed out a short of the big one. All these results can only be achieved by the hard work of the coaches and managers who give their time to their teams to ensure all the players have fun and develop as cricketers. A big thank you goes to all our coaches, managers and parents for supporting their teams in the right spirit that makes us the best Club. I would also like to thank our Captains a number of who were new to the role and found out that it is a tough job not just on the field but off the field as well. Off the field the committee has and continues to work hard to ensure the success of the club. Without singling out everyone I would like to make special mention of a few Belinda taking on the role of Club Secretary doing both the junior and senior parts, Marlene for her role as Treasurer keeping a tight rein of our finances, Alex for his work and support which is hugely valuable to me. It was great to see a few new faces join the committee as well this year in Tracey (Webmaster), Brendan (Sponsorship), Jake and Aayush (Committee). Well done to those players who represented PJCA this year. Congratulations to Ashley Day for representing NSW, Kobe Carroll - Green Shield, Metro Cup, and graded with Sydney Uni, Brandon Speechley - Green Shield and Metro Cup with Penrith, Justin Felsch - Green Shield, Tim Creer Cup and graded with Sydney, he also played U14 State Challenge Cup, Dylan Ferguson Metro Cup Sydney Uni and Blake Wicks U14 State Challenge Cup. It’s great to see players from our club playing at higher levels. District Awards I would like to congratulate the following players for winning District awards this season. NDCA Michael George – 6th Grade Batting Aggregate PJCA Bailey Bedford – Under 11 Bowling Aggregate Sponsors Once again the St Marys RSL and Ex Servicemens Club was our major sponsor this year and we thank them for their continued support. As I mentioned Brendan came on the committee this year and went out and was able to secure the club new sponsors in 2014/15 which we hope will become ongoing sponsors for the coming years, welcome on board your support is greatly appreciated: Penrith Lock Up Framin Good Photography St Marys Indoor Recreation Centre AirTag Pioneer Pest Control B Smart Fencing Colyton Hotel We thank these organisations for their involvement with our club and encourage you to support these businesses. If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a club sponsor please come and speak to us. We always need more sponsors to help build our club so if there are any club members, parents, family or friends that are interested in becoming a club sponsor for next season jump on board now we are a club going places. See you all next season. The competition was definitely ours to lose and confidence was never an issue. We started the year great, however our team batting efforts throughout the year lacked consistency which ultimately saw our side knocked out prematurely in the semi-finals. Again our bowlers performed fantastically throughout the year, and as a captain it is nice to have so many top fast bowlers to choose from. We remain determined to win the second grade competition in the upcoming season however everyone will have to work on consistency in their batting. Notable mentions from last season include Grant Bradley’s first century for the club against Cranebrook who went on to play in the final, David Dunn’s 7 wickets against our rivals St Clair Hawks, followed by a 6 wicket haul against Glenmore Park Black. While we were competitive in most of our games this season, we did struggle to finish on the right side after our bright start. We have come to the realisation we are getting old. We having been together now for the last 10 years and the majority of the players are approaching or already a few years past 40. It was great having the few young guys in Brandon G, Jack, Nick and Brandon S playing fulltime this year especially having Jack & Brandon S return to the club after a couple years off. We will be back next year hopefully dropping down a grade or two cause while we may be getting older we still enjoy our game of cricket, the banter on the field and the laughs and beers after it. Thanks to the players who helped out in 3rd game this year it was greatly appreciated. • A HISTORY of CLUB CRICKET in COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One
A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 7th December 2016 Newsletter #151 Pasifika Talent Targeted as Former Star Vanishes and the NRL Goes to War Over Money By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan T BARELY created a ripple, let alone a storm, but the news the Vodafone Warriors have announced the Iintroduction of a Pasifika Youth Cup, should be celebrated. The competition will add a layer to our development programme, and an important one. The tournament will feature under-16 and 18 teams and will be played in Auckland from January 25-28. Ex- pect there to be any number of eagle-eyed talent spotters there to watch, particularly as the Aussies continue to feast on a pool of talent they regularly raid. Lining up will be New Zealand Maori, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji NZ, Cook Islands and Auckland Niue, with all the teams being hosted by the New Zealand Maori Rugby League, in association with the Warriors. Warriors recruitment and development manager Tony Iro said the cup, and the club's other initiatives, give a valuable pathway. We all know the dominance of Pasifika players on the league front, with top players making their way into the NRL, and there is zero reason to believe that is going to be any different any time soon. “If young players are serious about their goals then they need to think about off-season training and the Pasi- fika Youth Cup provides a carrot for them to push hard during the preseason,” Iro said.
