Introduction Season 2014-15 was a success with quality performances on-field from all levels of grade cricket through to Kookaburra Greater Northern Cup and representative games. The year was significant as it saw the Devonport Orions win their first A-Grade Premiership since 2003-04, bringing its overall tally to 13 wins. It frustrated Ulverstone, bidding for its fifth successive premiership, prevailing in a hard fought contest. Congratulations to Devonport Cricket Club, it’s year was one of great achievement as it also won the 1st Grade T20 Grand Final and the Second Grade T20 and Two-Day premierships. Season Launch Our season was launched on October 10 at The Point Function Centre in Burnie. Three new coaches were introduced on the night, with Andy Harris (Burnie Hurricanes), Steven Adkins (Latrobe) and Andrew Davidson (Wynyard) stepping into these key roles for 2014-15. Three clubs also benefited from English imports, with James Hendrickson and Jake Libby at Latrobe, Chris Firth at Sheffield, Alex McChristie at Devonport and Andy Harris at the Burnie Hurricanes. All five delivered positive results for their clubs on and off the field. The guest speaker was former first-class umpire Darren Close, who recounted some entertaining stories from his time standing in Sheffield Shield matches, including giving Dennis Lillee his first wicket playing for Tasmania. A Hall of Fame Induction was made to worthy recipient Kevin Pearce (Devonport, Latrobe), while his former team-mate David Squibb (East Devonport, Devonport, Latrobe) was added as a Nominee. It was pleasing to bestow the Lance Cox Merit Award on Darcy Leno (Wynyard) to recognise his outstanding services as Club President, Sponsorship Kevin Pearce – Hall of Fame Inductee Director and Volunteer over many years. We welcomed Kevin Matthews as a new CNW Board Member, and also announced the awarding of Association Life Membership to former President Chris Mitchell. Cricket North West Annual Report 2014/15 – Page 7 It was opportune to also inform clubs that the CNW Strategic Plan for the next 5 years was finalised. Its purpose is to pursue standards that will increase development of cricket so that it continues to be the number one sporting pursuit during the summer months. Local Grade Competition Highlights We congratulate this season’s premiership teams, as follows: CNW 1st Grade – Devonport defeated Ulverstone Goodstone Group 2nd Grade – Devonport defeated Ulverstone Crowe Horwath Female T20 – Wynyard defeated Burnie Hurricanes Commonwealth Bank Under-17s – Circular Head defeated Burnie Hurricanes Commonwealth Bank Under-15s – Burnie Hurricanes defeated Latrobe We also congratulate our T20 competition premiers, with Devonport claiming the Sportspower Burnie 1st and 2nd Grade titles, defeating Latrobe and Ulverstone respectively. Congratulations are also in order for Circular Head, who claimed the premiership double in the Under-17s, defeating Ulverstone to claim the Commonwealth Bank Under-17 T20 title. A new four-team Female T20 competition was staged involving the Burnie Hurricanes, Latrobe, Ulverstone and Wynyard after Cricket North established their own four-team competition. The Crowe Horwath Female T20 Grand Final was held at West Park in front of a good crowd. Likewise good crowds attended all other Grand Finals. A highlight was Wynyard defeating Cricket North Premiers Riverside in the first-ever Female Greater Northern T20 Grand Final. Wynyard – Crowe Horwath Female T20 Premiers The interest in midweek T20 games for 1st Grade and junior competitions is increasingly strong, with good crowds at venues through November, December and January. High standards of play were achieved in 1st Grade Two-Day matches. The introduction of extra bonus points for batting 80 overs in the first innings saw teams batting longer and set up some tense second day run chases. There were 47 five-wicket hauls and 16 centuries across all grades, with the most formidable being Gregg Sharman’s 135 not out to get Wynyard within 10 runs of an incredible outright victory against the Burnie Hurricanes. Dale Baker reached 10,000 1st Grade runs for Burnie Yeoman (now trading as the Burnie Hurricanes), and has amassed over 13,000 runs when including his matches for Burnie prior to the merger with Yeoman in 1989. It could be many years before the competition’s leading 1st Grade run-scorer’s record is overhauled. Cricket North West Annual Report 2014/15 – Page 8 Grand Final & Association Highlights The Grand Final Luncheon held at The Point Function Centre, West Park on Day 1 of the CNW 1st Grade Grand Final attracted 70 attendees. Guest speaker was Cricket Tasmania’s Game & Market Development Manager Ben Smith. He talked about the benefits and advantages of young players remaining in multiple sports for as long as possible, and current trends in cricket participation. The Grand Final contest was even for a significant part of the match, but Devonport’s first innings advantage was too much for Ulverstone to overcome. Bruce Will of Devonport was a fitting Trevor Docking Medal winner, recognised as Player of the Match for his two crucial innings with the bat. Ben Smith First Grade Player of the Year Award The CNW Player of the Year Award went to irrepressible Ulverstone batsman Josh Walmsley, who claimed his third award win after producing another outstanding season. Ben Hilfenhaus Medal Josh Walmsley The Ben Hilfenhaus Medal for the competition’s best Under-21 player, voted on by 1st Grade Captains, went to Corey Murfet of Ulverstone, whose successful year took him to the National Training Centre as part of an Australian Under-18 Talent Camp. First Grade Batting and Bowling Awards As part of Cricket North West’s commitment to honouring past greats, naming status to major awards are rotated on a regular basis. After more than 10 years of honouring former Devonport and Latrobe fast bowler Harold Allen, it was decided that former Ulverstone spinner Don Pearce should be recognised. The Don Pearce 1st Grade Bowling Award was won by Chris Lindsay of Devonport. Likewise after honouring former South Burnie and Burnie batsman Ray Stokes it was decided that Wynyard and Burnie batsman Les Allen should be recognised. The Les Allen 1st Grade Batting Award was won by Josh Walmsley of Ulverstone. Chris Lindsay Kookaburra Greater Northern Cup We were indebted to Kookaburra for its continuing role as naming rights sponsor for the annual One-Day competition played between CNW and Cricket North clubs.
