The Association was formed in 1955 and played its first inter-county match, against the old enemy Devon, on 4th July 1956 at Liskeard Cricket Club. For the next 20 years a regular programme of four matches for an Under Fifteen side was arranged against local counties. In 1978, in response to the greater interest in youth cricket, the Association branched out and selected two additional teams at Under Thirteen and Under Eleven. Over the years the programme has continued to grow and since 1990 the Association has organised teams in all age groups for boys from Under Ten through to Under Seventeen. At the start of the new millennium, the Association launched a Girls cricket initiative and currently there are teams for girls at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17. In 2016 over one hundred and fifty representative matches will be played with “B” team matches at several age groups. The Winter Coaching Programme, organised in conjunction with the Cornwall Association of Cricket Coaches, provides essential training for all squads throughout the year and almost all County matches are played on top Club grounds, with official umpires.

The Association also organises many knockout competitions for all schools both indoor and outdoor for girls and boys, at both Primary and Secondary level within Cornwall and these provide cricket for over three thousand pupils! In 2016 there will be a new competition supported and sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Cornwall.

In 2012 Cornwall won the Minor Counties Championship for the first time in their 109 year history. The team which defeated Buckinghamshire in the 4-day final, contained no fewer than 10 former CSCA players, along with a professional from Pakistan! To add to this success 2015 brought another “first” with Cornwall winning the Minor Counties knock-out Cup competition, once again with a team made up almost entirely of CSCA “old boys”. Some CSCA “old boys” go on to even higher levels with Charlie Shreck and Liam Norwell regularly playing First Class cricket. More recently Jake Libby has performed with great success for Nottinghamshire and Northants. If he can stay free of injuries this summer should bring him further success. Hopefully some of these recent stars will emulate our own Jack Richards who played for CSCA in 1973 and who scored a memorable in the Test Match for England in Australia in 1987. Amongst former CSCA opponents who have achieved eminence, are Sir , who scored a typically quick-fire 71 against us in 1970 and who twice scored hundreds against CSCA! Cornwall teams at the Festivals have “experienced” at first hand the remarkable talents of players such as Alistair Cook, , and as young players, and more recently our teams have played against , , , , and Reece Topley, who are all currently involved in England teams.

In 1994 ESCA introduced an Under 15 and, remarkably, the Cornwall team made it to the finals in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2000 and only achieved similar distinction. In an attempt to continue to sharpen the playing skills of our young players, the Association seeks to find top class opposition every year. In 1994 we embarked on our series of highly successful international tours to South Africa. This year, as another “first” we have arranged our first ever Girls Tour, also to South Africa, which reflects the growing success of the game for Girls in the Duchy! In the coming season we will have fixtures against the best talent in the country, including games against the youth teams of almost all of the First Class counties. Despite such demanding fixtures, the Cornwall Under 17 and Cornwall Under 15 teams both reached National County championship finals in 2012 and clearly there is no shortage of talented players in Cornwall. Every year we also have the pleasure of hosting visits from touring side, especially our friends from the Franklyn Stephenson Academy in and St. Stithians School (“Saints”) in Johannesburg, South Africa, whom we will be delighted to meet and entertain in Cornwall.

A message from the England Assistant Coach

Congratulations to the players from both Cornwall and Devon Schools Under 15s teams, firstly on being selected and secondly on maintaining the fantastic tradition of county schools cricket.

Both teams are continuing not only a great tradition but also continually setting the standards for so many other aspiring young cricketers to follow.

County schools cricket is such an important part of not only producing players to play county or international cricket, but also maintaining string across the country.

To everybody involved in Cornwall Schools Cricket Association, many congratulations, not only on your continual hard work, but for continuing to allow so many boys and girls across your county to enjoy such a well organised cricketing structure. Sixty years is a tremendous effort.

At the moment we are enjoying some reasonable success with the England team. We are basing that on hard work, playing how you want to play, back your game and just as importantly, have a lot of fun doing it.

If I was lucky enough to be there in Truro with you when you play the game, that is exactly what I would be telling you.

You have been selected because you have a talent, there can be no better place than a two day game against your local rivals, to showcase your talent.

Good luck to both teams,

Thank you to the team managers and coaches.

Have fun,

Paul

A message from Notts County Cricketer Jake Libby I was introduced to cricket through my dad who played for the local club side called Looe. I used to travel with him to games and play on the side of the pitch while the match was going on. My first taste was at Under 10s where I played pairs cricket for Looe and remember walking out in big pads and a bat I could barely pick up.

When I broke into the CSCA sides at under 10s the big highlight was always playing against Devon and all the way through the ages we were very even sides and had some very good battles. One of my favourite times of the year was the Kings College Taunton festival which was always a week long trip and that was great to play cricket every day with a great bunch of lads.

I managed to progress through to playing premier league cricket with Callington and then being selected for the Cornwall Minor Counties side, it took me a while to adjust to the standard before I started to have consistent success. Meanwhile I started my degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University, as well as taking part in the MCCU universities side.

I loved my time at the centre in Cardiff and this helped me to progress onto a professional stage. Sean Hooper helped through his links with Notts and I managed to get a summer trial and gained a contract at the end of the 2014 Summer, topped off with a hundred on my championship debut v Sussex.

I have a lot to thank CSCA for and certainly my development as a player has been massively down to this as well as many people in Cornwall. It's been a long route to first class cricket with the ups and downs which come with this but all the hard work along the way makes it worthwhile. Since my time as a professional at Nottingham, there have already been some amazing highs, but I have only started my career and there's a lot of hard work to go before it will be successful. Some of my best memories are times spent with CSCA and in particular the tours I was lucky enough to go on. Touring South Africa with is something which always stays in my mind and the amazing experiences we had as a team both on and off the pitch.

Jake
