For the next 20 years a regular programme of four matches for an Under Fifteen side was arranged against local counties. In 1978, in response to the greater interest in youth cricket, the Association branched out and selected two additional teams at Under Thirteen and Under Eleven. Over the years the programme has continued to grow and since 1990 the Association has organised teams in all age groups for boys from Under Ten through to Under Seventeen. At the start of the new millennium, the Association launched a Girls cricket initiative and currently there are teams for girls at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17. In 2016 over one hundred and fifty representative matches will be played with “B” team matches at several age groups. The Winter Coaching Programme, organised in conjunction with the Cornwall Association of Cricket Coaches, provides essential training for all squads throughout the year and almost all County matches are played on top Club grounds, with official umpires. The Association also organises many knockout competitions for all schools both indoor and outdoor for girls and boys, at both Primary and Secondary level within Cornwall and these provide cricket for over three thousand pupils! In 2016 there will be a new competition supported and sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Cornwall. In 2012 Cornwall won the Minor Counties Championship for the first time in their 109 year history. The team which defeated Buckinghamshire in the 4-day final, contained no fewer than 10 former CSCA players, along with a professional from Pakistan! To add to this success 2015 brought another “first” with Cornwall winning the Minor Counties knock-out Cup competition, once again with a team made up almost entirely of CSCA “old boys”. Some CSCA “old boys” go on to even higher levels with Charlie Shreck and Liam Norwell regularly playing First Class cricket. More recently Jake Libby has performed with great success for Nottinghamshire and Northants. If he can stay free of injuries this summer should bring him further success. Hopefully some of these recent stars will emulate our own Jack Richards who played for CSCA in 1973 and who scored a memorable century in the Test Match for England in Australia in 1987. Amongst former CSCA opponents who have achieved eminence, are Sir Ian Botham, who scored a typically quick-fire 71 against us in 1970 and Marcus Trescothick who twice scored hundreds against CSCA! Cornwall teams at the Taunton Festivals have “experienced” at first hand the remarkable talents of players such as Alistair Cook, Ian Bell, Matt Prior and Graeme Swann as young players, and more recently our teams have played against Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Joe Root, James Vince and Reece Topley, who are all currently involved in England teams. In 1994 ESCA introduced an Under 15 County Championship and, remarkably, the Cornwall team made it to the finals in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2000 and only Yorkshire achieved similar distinction. In an attempt to continue to sharpen the playing skills of our young players, the Association seeks to find top class opposition every year. In 1994 we embarked on our series of highly successful international tours to South Africa. This year, as another “first” we have arranged our first ever Girls Tour, also to South Africa, which reflects the growing success of the game for Girls in the Duchy! In the coming season we will have fixtures against the best talent in the country, including games against the youth teams of almost all of the First Class counties. Despite such demanding fixtures, the Cornwall Under 17 and Cornwall Under 15 teams both reached National County championship finals in 2012 and clearly there is no shortage of talented players in Cornwall. Every year we also have the pleasure of hosting visits from touring side, especially our friends from the Franklyn Stephenson Academy in Barbados and St. Stithians School (“Saints”) in Johannesburg, South Africa, whom we will be delighted to meet and entertain in Cornwall.
