MESSAGE FROM

Congratulations to Clarence District Cricket Club and North Hobart Cricket Club on progressing through to the CTPL 1st Grade Grand Final. North Hobart will be contesting their second consecutive Grand Final following last seasons defeat at the hands of SHSB while Clarence return to the showpiece for the first time since 2011/12 in which they defeated Kingborough. CT extends the best of luck to all competing players chasing success this weekend. In an exceptional feat, Clarence and Kingborough will be contesting 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade and Boy’s Under 17’s Grand Finals. The Roos finished first in 3rd Grade and second in 2nd Grade and Under 17’s while Kingborough finished first in 2nd Grade and Under 17’s. Both clubs have been strong across the grades all season reflected by their dominance in the Club Championship which Kingborough claimed back from Clarence this season. Those who walk away as premiers on the weekend will be joining those who have claimed silverware already this season. The 1st Grade Twenty20 and subsequent Statewide Twenty20 titles were claimed by SHSB while University broke a four year drought to claim the Kookaburra Cup which was also their last premiership in 2012/13. For the first time in five seasons, there was a new CTPL Women’s Twenty20 Premier with Kingborough claiming the title which had previously resided with North Hobart. The Demon’s were not without success though, claiming the inaugural Women’s Kookaburra Cup which was introduced this year as a knock out competition. The future is also bright at the TCA ground with North Hobart claiming the Girl’s Under 17’s in emphatic fashion. The Boy’s Under 15 competition also underwent a change this year with the primary competition becoming a One-Day competition, claimed by Kingborough, while a separate Twenty20 competition was introduced and went to New Town. A fitting result with both clubs runner up in the final they did not claim. The 40 and Over Grand Final was also contested by North Hobart and Clarence, the Roos running out winners, while Kingborough claimed the Under 18 vacation competition. For the first time since 2003/04, dual Emerson Rodwell medallists were crowned with Harry Allanby (Clarence) and (North Hobart) unable to be split. Allanby enjoyed success with both bat and ball for Clarence while Jewell had his best ever season with the willow. The Fazackerley Medal came down to the final round with Dutch international Sterre Kalis (University) narrowly edging out Clarence’s Olivia McDonald. Congratulations also the umpires appointed to the finals round and all those who have stood in finals throughout the season. The ongoing support cricket receives from the TCUSA is appreciated. Thanks to club administrations, coaches, volunteers and parents for the contribution they have again made of the season, and to CTPL Principle Partner Detail First and supporting partners Kookaburra Sport and Carlton United Breweries. CT also thanks the Kingborough Council, Hobart City Council, Clarence City Council, Glenorchy City Council, Brighton Council, The Hutchins School & University of Tasmania for their support through provision of grounds for our competition, and the outstanding curators and ground staff in the preparation of playing venues.

CTPL WOMENS T20 GRAND FINAL 2017/18 In the Women's Grand final played at Queenborough Oval, the Sharks were set 129 for victory after the Knights elected to bat first. Boasting the likes of Corinne Hall and Isobel Joyce, the target would have felt within reach and even more so after the Sharks moved to 0/20 from three overs.

Leah Wierenga got the break through for the Knights in the fourth over, with Angela Green (2) behind and sparked a collapse for SHSB. Kristy Coppleman (1/25) claimed the big of Hall (18) the following over before Wierenga (2/12) removed /coach Linsey Da Costa (4) LBW. The Sharks lost 3/5 in three overs bringing Kingborough roaring back into the match. Joyce and Carrie-ann White set about rebuilding the Sharks and at the half way point they were 3/53 and looking solid until a mix up and brilliant piece of fielding by Bonnie Davies caught White (8) short of her crease.

Another mix up resulted in the dismissal of Astell (1) shortly after and the Sharks were on the back foot again. Joyce did her utmost to try and haul the target in but was running out of partners as Johanna Jones (2/15) claimed two in the fourtheenth over. Joyce (50) was only removed with two balls to go registering a defiant half century before the innings concluded 8/102, 17-runs shy of the target.

Earlier, Emily Divin combined with Louise Maddock at the top of the order to help the Knights capitalise on their choice to bat first. The pair worked hard, without boundaries they rotated the strike and ran quick singles to bring up the 50-run partnership in the ninth over but in the same over, Joyce removed Maddock (25) who skied a ball to midwicket. Kristy Coppleman (8) joined Divin at the crease but her stay was shorter than she would have anticipated, adjudged LBW off the of Katie Court (1/23) in the twelfth over.

Divin continued and after Lauren Hepburn (11) was run out, Divin carried her bat to raise what was the match winning half century and close out the innings 3/128 with Jo Jones (5 ). Divin's unbeaten 58 from 56 balls earned her the Player of the Final.

KOOKABURRA CUP GRAND FINAL 2017-18

A man of the match performance by UK import Jack Laraman guided University to a comfortable eight wicket win over Clarence in the Kookaburra Cup Final. The Lions had a winning start to the day with Nick Grubb calling the toss and electing to bowl first. The test calibre opening bowling attack of and James Faulkner were economical early, restricting Clarence to 26 from the first nine overs but were unable to get the breakthrough.

There was little respite for Roos openers Harry Allanby and Jesse Dinnie having seen off the new ball with Gordon Kerr and introduced into the attack. Allanby (21) saw the change of bowling as an opportunity to change the momentum but in attempting to drive Perrin over the infield miscued the ball to mid-off and became the first wicket of the day.

Dinnie took the lead in the new partnership with Wade Irvine and they looked to have Clarence back on track with a steady 50-run partnership but the introduction of Laraman's left-arm orthodox, combining with the leg-spin of Joel Logan at the 20th over turned the game in the Lions favour.

At first the spinners were attacked with 16 runs from their first two overs but then Dinnie (42 from 72 balls) was trapped LBW by Laraman with the score on 83. Laraman claimed a wicket in three consecutive overs with Irvine (19) and Daniel Salpietro (5) following Dinnie back to the changerooms. Among Laraman's wickets, Logan claimed Liam Devlin (0) to bring their collective total to 4/12 from 6 overs and put the Clarence innings into damage control. Michael Jones and Ned Absolom were tasked with rescuing the innings and patiently looked to get Clarence to a defendable total.

They had put on 38 for the sixth wicket seeing Laraman and Logan out of the attack but Laraman's reintroduction for the 37th over again reaped rewards with Jones (21) neatly caught behind by opposing ‘keeper Grubb. The big hitting was Laraman’s fifth wicket, finishing his 10 overs with 5/37. Logan (3/25) and Perrin (2/31) finished off the tail to bring an end to Clarence’s innings in the 45th over with 157 runs on the board.

The Roos needed early wickets if they were to defend the sub-par total and got off to an ideal start with the removal of Noah van de Werken (4) by (1/28) but there was little joy to follow. Laraman was joined by Rhett Lockyear for the second wicket and requiring little more than three runs an over, the pair were rarely troubled.

Laraman played the more patient innings with renowned hitter Lockyear, continuing at almost a run a ball. With just four to win, Lockyear (72 from 80 deliveries) looked to have registered the win in style with slashing cut shot only to be sharply caught by Irvine at point. It was left to James Hortle to finish the job in the 35th over, doing so in the same manner Lockyear had attempted. Laraman capping of an outstanding performance by carrying his bat to be 67 not out from 118 deliveries. 6

KOOKABURRA CUP (WOMEN’S) COMPETITION & GRAND FINAL

This season saw the re-introduction of Women’s One-Day cricket for the first time since 2012/13 through the knock-out Women’s Kookaburra Cup. Based on the standings from 2016/17 the eight CTPL clubs were split into two pools of four. In the first round, North Hobart comfortably accounted for Glenorchy. first, the Demons posted an imposing 7/201 from their 40 overs, Sam Roberts leading the way with 45 before the innings was finished off by Bernadette Doyle’s 38 not out. Kirsten Allen then turned destroyer with the ball, claiming 5/4 to skittle the Magpies for 43. SHSB also recorded a comfortable first round win on the back of a five-wicket haul, Hannah Powe (5/6) the star. Lindisfarne managed only 46 in 20.2 overs which the Sharks chased down in the eighth over without the loss of a wicket. New Town and Clarence also ended the one-day seasons of Kingborough and University respectively. In the Semi-Finals, SHSB took on a previously undefeated Clarence. The match was reduced to 26 overs -a-side and after electing to bat first, Clarence compiled 4/158. The early loss of Erin Fazackerley (0) was no deterrent for Emma Thompson (70) and Olivia McDonald (56) who combined for a 117 run partnership to set up the innings. The Roos would have been confident of defending the total but Corrine Hall had other ideas for SHSB. Hall hammered an unbeaten 99 from just 75 balls with support from Angela Green (15) and Linsey Da Costa (22) to get the Sharks over the line with 8 wickets and 8 balls to spare. In the other Semi-Final, New Town and North Hobart renewed their rivalry. The Bucks elected to bat first but were quickly made to regret their decision. Meg Phillips (29) and Brooke Hepburn (52) were the only Bucks batters to reach double figures as North Hobart dismantled the remaining line up. Belinda Page led the wicket takers with 3/24 as Hannah Short, Ella Mash and Kirsten Allen all claimed two wickets. The Bucks were ultimately dismissed for 121 which after an 85 run opening stand between Taylah Purton (44*) and Stefanie Daffara (33), was never going to be enough. Page (15*) partnered Purton to help secure the winning runs in 22 overs. In the Grand Final, North Hobart were looking to continue their many years of success, albeit in a different format having missed twenty20 finals for the first time in their history while SHSB were simply looking for their first piece of silverware, having finished runners up to Kingborough only weeks earlier. The Demons won the toss and looked to put runs on the board. As they had done in the Semi-Final, Purton (30) and Daffara (58) combined for a strong opening partnership of 81 before Purton was dismissed. It started a steady fall of wickets until Doyle (29*) helped steady the innings and see Daffara to her half century. Daffara’s knock was ended after 51 deliveries but Doyle ensured the innings was batted out to set the Sharks 9/183. Three Sharks bowlers claimed two wickets a piece, Beth Schiwy the best of them with 2/28. The Sharks slipped to 2/21 in reply and without Hall, the crucial partnership of Carrie-ann White and Da Costa began to right the innings. Early wickets and tight bowling slowed the Sharks run rate but White and Da Costa moved passed the 50 run partnership and were beginning to accelerate, until a mix up left White stranded and sent packing for 31. It was the beginning of the end for SHSB. Da Costa (26) was removed a further two runs later and the remaining six wickets fell for just nine runs. Ella Marsh (2/2), Hannah Short (2/7), Grace Pullen (2/9) and Kirsten Allen (2/27) sharing the honours for the Demons. For her half century, Daffara was awarded the player of the final.

CTPL TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2017-18 The 2017/18 Detail First CTPL Twenty20 Grand Final at Blundstone Arena had a familiar feel to it with regular finalists SHSB and Kingborough featuring in what was a replay of the 2014/15 Twenty20 Grand Final. The Sharks were the favourites heading into the encounter courtesy of a host of players returning for the match but were sent in to bat after the Knights elected to bowl given the green tinge on the wicket. Tom Martyn made the most of the early conditions, clean bowling Matt Clark (4) with an outstanding . Sean Willis and Alex Doolan steadied moving the score to 49 before Willis (14) was dismissed by Rhys Ward (1/31). Hurricanes captain George Bailey (2) followed shortly after due to another piece of great bowling, this time from Cameron Wheatley (2/23). One Hurricane replaced by another with the new man in. In tough scoring conditions, Milenko freed his arms for a quick 20 (14) including two sixes and despite his stay being shorter than he would have liked, Milenko’s innings helped kick start the scoring for the Sharks. Contributions from Harry Nichols (14) and (16) supporting Alex Doolan’s knock of 48 (46) helped the Sharks push out to 8/134 from their 20 overs. Wheatley finished the best of the bowlers with 2/23 while was as usual economical with 1/18 from this four. The target wasn’t an imposing one and the Knights started their innings steadily before a change of bowling saw Milenko introduced into the attack. Milenko got the first wicket of Riley Backhouse (9) with the score on 18 and then brother Mitchell for a golden duck. A short time later he struck again removing Freitag (14) to claim the top three wicket and put Kingborough on the back foot. Similarly to the first innings, new batters struggled to get going in the tough scoring conditions and ultimately wickets continued to tumble as batters tried, and failed to keep up with the required run rate. Sam Martyn was the best of the Knights with 19 (16) in the middle order as Kingston (4/18) and Milenko (4/19) did the damage for the Sharks. Milenko was awarded the player of the final medal for his efforts. View the CTPL Twenty20 Grand Final & Kookaburra Cup Final on the CTPL Youtube Channel. Search for “Cricket Tasmania Premier League”

Electing to bat first, North Hobart suffered an early blow with Chelsea Thomas (0) trapped LBW by Hannah Powe (2/20) in the second over of the innings. The wicket brought together the Demons co-captains Ella Marsh (36*) and Sam Roberts (38*) who combined for an 86-run partnership to build the North Hobart innings. Upon Roberts retirement, Powe struck again removing Grace Pullen (0).

Marsh continued with Melodie Armstrong and steadied the innings with the pair combining for a further 33-run stand taking the innings total past the 100 run mark before Marsh's retirement. Armstrong's retirement followed 27 runs later after she hammered 37 from 26 before the North Hobart innings drew to a close with an imposing 4/159 on the board.

Chasing the challenging total, the Sharks needed their opening duo to fire but similarly to the first innings the second over reaped rewards for the bowling teaming. Marsh claimed the crucial wicket of Powe (1) and immediately after Georgia McMullen (0).

It was a telling blow for the Sharks, one which they struggled to recover from. Captain Sarah Breckweg (16) was still at the crease but the incoming batters struggled to keep pace with the required target despite continued fighting throughout the innings. Wickets fell periodically and ultimately the target was too great with North Hobart running out 98 run victors. Breckweg top scored for the Sharks with Elise Harrison (2/6) joining Marsh (2/6) as the multiple wicket takers for the Demons.

Match Summary: North Hobart 4/159(cc) (S Roberts 38*, M Armstrong 37*, E Marsh 36*; H Powe 2/20) def South Hobart Sandy Bay 8/62(cc) (E Harrison 2/6, E Marsh 2/6)

CTPL UNDER 15 ONE-DAY GRAND FINAL 2017-18 The Under 15 Boys Premier League competition moved to a solely One-Day format in 2017/18 in line with ’s Junior Formats, with a separate T20 competition integrated into the season which was played in December and January.

After 14 rounds, Kingborough (74 points) finished atop of the ladder, with New Town (62), North Hobart (38) and Clarence (33) rounding out the top four.

In the first Semi-Final, Kingborough defeated Clarence by 5 wickets at Kingston Twin Ovals.

Batting first, Clarence were off to a flying start thanks to a 100-run opening stand between Tomas Pears (41) and Ryan Borsboom (53), but with no other batsmen reaching double figures, Clarence capitulated to finish on 9/136 after 40 overs. In reply, a blistering knock from Jacob Glover (52) and with support from Jack Ross (27) and Sam Lancaster (18) helped Kingborough to a comfortable victory with more than 7 overs to spare.

In the second Semi-Final, a devastating century from Hunter Douglas-Wright (121no off 66 balls) helped New Town to a 145-run victory over North Hobart. Coming in at 2/86, Douglas- Wright was a dominant force throughout his innings, bludgeoning eight 4’s and six 6’s in an 80 minute spell at the crease. In reply, North Hobart were unable to reach the lofty heights of Douglas-Wright and finished on 6/141 from its 40 overs, with Joe Kelly the best of the North Hobart batsman with 64no.

With play reduced to 20 overs a side due to torrential rain and wild storms the night before, Kingborugh lifted its first U/15 Boys title since 2014/15 following a seven wicket win over New Town at Soldiers Memorial Oval.

After winning the toss and batting, New Town were never able to gain any momentum with the bat and were eventually bowled out for 83 in the 20th over, with Will Sartori (40) the only batsmen to provide any resistance. In reply, Kingborough’s Jack Ross (39) was once again influential at the top of the order, steering Kingborough to its sixth U/15 Boys title since 1993/94.

CTPL UNDER 15 T20 GRAND FINAL 2017-18

In grueling conditions at Kangaroo Bay Oval, New Town claimed the inaugural Boy's Under 15's Twenty20 premiership defeating Kingborough in the Grand Final, chasing down the Knights total of 103 with five balls to spare.

In hot conditions, the Knights elected to bat first but struggled early with openers Dane Ayliffe and Sam Voss both dismissed for two with just six runs on the board. Captain Aidan Donovan and Jacob Glover came together and steadily went about resurrecting the innings combining for 46 before Glover (27) was dismissed. Kane Wouters joined Donovan and wasted little time. Wouters (22 from 20 including one six) and Donovan combined for 48 but were both removed in quick success. Losing the two in batsman took the wind out of the Knights sail heading into the final overs and ultimately they finished their 20 overs 6/103. Of the Bucks bowlers, the best and most economical were the opening duo of Jesse Willmott (2/11) and Andrew Smith (2/15).

In a low scoring day, the total still gave the Knights plenty of hope which was only heightened when Bucks opener Joshua Young (6) was removed early. The wicket brought Will Sartori to the crease and in partnership with Sam Wright, they took the game away from the Knights. Without being outlandish, they chipped away at the total continually rotating the strike among important boundaries. They put on 79 before Sartori who had been the quicker of the two (34 from 32) was dismissed. The Knights struck again but it wasn't the key wicket of Wright who carried his bat in a match winning 48 from 53 balls as the Bucks registered the win 3 down in the 19th over.

Earlier in the day, both teams contested Semi-Finals with New Town qualifying for the final by the narrowest of margins over Clarence, and Kingborough defeating South Hobart Sandy Bay

CTPL UNDER 18 VACATION COMPETITION 2017-18

An exceptional innings from guided the Kingborough District Cricket Club to victory in the 2017/18 Under 18 Vacation Competition Final.

Winning the toss and electing the bat, Owen and opening partner Connor O'Brien were watchful early, starting steadily before Owen started to target the short square boundary. In no time at all Owen had registered his 50 from 45 deliveries. Connor complimented Owen well, rotating the strike to ensure the big right-hander was able to continue attacking the North Hobart bowlers and the pair brought up the 100 run partnership in the 18th over.

Owen's strike rate only continued to climb as he pushed towards a second century for the competition. On 98 in the 23rd over, he braved the deep mid-on off the bowling of Will Collins (1/36), clearing the boundary to register his century, which also included 13 boundaries, off just 82 deliveries. In the same over, Collins managed to get the breakthrough removing O'Brien (35) with a great catch off his own bowling. Three overs later, Owen was bowled Isaac Manson (1/42) to bring an end to his exceptional innings on 108 (89).

Jack McCulloch and Will Poland (24) were able to build on the foundation, partnering for a 81-run 3rd wicket stand to push the score beyond 200. McCulloch was devastating hitting 56 from 42 deliveries including 4 boundaries and 2 sixes. The Knights attacked the bowling to the very end, posting an imposing 7/250 from 40 overs. The wickets were shared among five North Hobart bowlers, Jarrod van der Steege managing the best return (2/34) from 7 overs.

Needing a run-a-ball from the outset, it was always going to be tough for North Hobart, made even tougher with the run out of Luke Williams (4) in the fourth over. Wickets continued to fall for the Demons, Joshua Henley taking the key scalp of Jake Williams (12) who was coming off a century in the semi-finals.

At 5/77 the writing was on the wall for North Hobart and van der Steege endeavoured to haul the Demons back into the contest with a fighting 57 from 56 deliveries including involvement in a 54 run 6th wicket partnership. After van der Steege was run out in the 28th over, the required run-rate continued to climb to the point where for the final 10 overs the Demons were requiring 11 an over.

Both Will (25) and Sam Collins (23) tried but could not keep up and eventually North Hobart succumbed, all out for 198 in the 38th over. Six Knights players finished with wickets, Cam Walter the only multiple wicket taker with 2/45 from 8 overs.

Match Summary: Kingborough 7/250(cc) (M Owen 108, J McCulloch 56, C O'brien 35) def North Hobart 198 (J Van der steege 57).

For his all round efforts throughout the competition, Mitchell Owen was awarded the player of the series on 11 votes, closely followed by Jake Williams and Lachlan Newland both of North Hobart on 10 votes.

CT STATEWIDE TWENTY20 GRAND FINALS 2017-18

On Sunday 11 March at the NTCA No. 2 Ground in Launceston, South Launceston (Cricket North) and the South Hobart Sandy Bay (CTPL) both claimed Statewide T20 Premierships following victories over Kingborough and Longford respectively.

In the first match of the day, South Launceston clinched their maiden State Premiership following a 24-run victory over CTPL's Twenty20 Premiers, Kingborough. Batting first, South Launceston posted a competitive 6/117, with captain Belinda Wegman top scoring with 38 off 24 balls while Caitlin Webster provided good support with 24 off 26 deliveries. Eloise Dick was the pick of the bowlers for Kingborough, claiming 3/27.

In reply, player of the final Amy Duggan (2/12) and Lisa Battle (2/12) were excellent with the ball, and helped to restrict Kingborough to 5/93 in their run chase. An unbeaten half-century from Lauren Hepburn (54 off 54 balls) was the best of the batters in what was a match dominated by South Launceston. Following consecutive State Final losses to North Hobart in 2015/16 and 2016/17, it was a well-deserved victory from the Knights of the North.

In the Men's Statewide T20 Grand Final, the South Hobart Sandy Bay Sharks claimed their second Statewide T20 Premiership following a 70-run victory over a gallant Longford Tigers from the Tasmanian Cricket League (TCL).

After winning the toss and batting, the Sharks posted a huge total of 3/209, with opening batsman top scoring with a blistering 68 off 34 balls while young gun and Sharks skipper Sean Willis provided strong support, blasting 59 from 38 deliveries.

In reply, Longford slumped to 9/92 but a 47-run last wicket stand between Jesse Arnol (38 off 26 balls) and Brett Martin (13 off 15 balls) pushed Longford's total to 139 from its20 overs.

For his efforts with both bat and ball, Dunk (68 and 2/31) was awarded the Dene Hills Medal, with Dunk full of praise for Longford's efforts on the day and throughout the season at the presentation ceremony.

“I think today shows why it’s really important to acknowledge the role that a club like Longford plays in the strength of Tasmanian cricket as a whole,” Dunk said.

It was a fantastic campaign from Longford, who defeated the East Coast Cricket Association, Westbury and Forest Stanley en-route to their maiden Statewide T20 Grand Final appearance. 18

CTPL OVER 40s COMPETITION & GRAND FINAL 2017-18

The second edition of the CTPL 40’s & Over competition kicked off in November this season with seven of the eight CTPL Clubs participating in a five round roster.

Following the completion of the roster rounds, North Hobart and Clarence (13 points) finished a top of the ladder and qualified for the Grand Final, followed by Kingborough (10), SHSB (5), University (5), Glenorchy (1) and New Town (1).

Arguably the strongest and most hostile rivalry in the 90s and 00’s, North Hobart and Clarence once again clashed for bragging rights for another premiership.

Played at Soldiers Memorial Oval at the Domain, Clarence took home their first piece of silverware of 2017/18 following a 14-run victory over the Demons .

Clarence were reeling at 6/43 but a serious injury to Demon Paul Collins hamstrung the hosts to just 10 men on the field. The Roos then taking full advantage with Trent Whitelaw (36no) and Michael Granger (16) helping push the total to 106 before being all out in the 20th over. Cameron Greenhill was excellent with the ball, claiming 4/30, while Dan Marsh wrapped up the tail, chiming in with 3/2.

In reply, the Demons looked out of it at 7/50 but a quick-fire 32 from David 'Didge' Collins got them to within reach, but with only 10 batsmen, the Demons fell 14 runs short of victory.

Grand Final Match Summary: Clarence 106 (T Whitelaw 36no, C Greenhill 4/30, D Marsh 3/2) def North Hobart 9/92 (D Collins 32, M Moore 2/2, B Brownless 2/7, A Dykes 2/14)

EMERSON RODWELL MEDAL 2017-18

For the first time since 2003/04, the honours as the competitions best have been shared. Clarence skipper Harry Allanby and North Hobart opening batter Caleb Jewell both finished on 16 votes ahead of a four man chasing pack. Allanby performed with both bat and ball for the Roos accruing 612 runs at 34.00 including centuries against University (102) and SHSB (142). With the ball in hand, Allanby claimed wicket sin 15 of 20 matches a total 33 wickets at 19.9. Jewell, in his sixth season of First Grade, had his best on record including the registering of his maiden century in round 15 against New Town. While it took seasons to register a first century, it took only 7 days to register a second, scoring 111 against South Hobart Sandy Bay. Jewell ultimately finished as the competitions leading run scorer with 724 runs at 42.59. Jewell started the season well with votes in both Twenty20 matches before a stretch of six matches in which he scored no votes. In the same period Allanby picked up two of his four man of the match performances and a further two votes. In the lead in to Christmas, Allanby produced his remaining two man of the match performances. The first against Jewell’s North Hobart in their T20 encounter and the second for his 142 against SHSB in their one-day thriller. A clear leader at Christmas, Allanby received only a solitary vote for the remainder of the season in round 15. Jewell on the other hand, accelerated claiming 10 votes in five rounds including maximum votes for the matches in which he scored his centuries. Both had the opportunity in the final round to take the outright lead but neither was able to capitalise, becoming the first to share the honours since Graham Cunningham (University) & Mark Colegrave in 2003/04. Heading in to the final round, Alex Pyecroft (North Hobart), Clive Rose (Kingborough) and Hamish Kingston (SHSB) could have joined Allanby and Jewell but Pyecroft and Rose didn’t feature in the votes and Kingston didn’t take to the field in SHSB’s win over Clarence.

KIM FAZACKERLEY MEDAL 2017-18

University of Tasmania CC’s Sterre Kalis claimed the Kim Fazackerley medal for 2017-18. The 18 year old all-rounder hails from the Netherlands and has represented her native Netherlands on the international stage. Her talent was obvious from the outset of the competition as she recorded back to back best on ground performances with statistics of 47 & 2/19 and 63 & 1/18. Across the duration of the competition, Kalis managed five such performances including the final round where she smashed an unbeaten 132 from just 72 deliveries to jump to the top of the leader board over Clarence’s Olivia McDonald. Kalis’ batting was a standout to take home the competitions aggregate award with 456 runs at an average of 76 but her bowling proved more than useful for the Lions claiming 11 wickets at 15. McDonald had another exceptional season for Clarence, polling votes in seven matches having only played nine for the season. CTPL WOMEN’S TEAM OF THE YEAR 2017-18 The 2017-18 CTPL Women’s Team of the Year is dominated by three of the four finalists with SHSB, remarkably not represented. Clarence and Kingborough, who finished the regular season in 1st and 2nd respectably each have three playing representatives with Kingborough coach Mark Divin also selected to coach the team in which his wife, Emily, is captain. For the Roos, all-round trio Erin Fazackerley, Olivia McDonald and Emma Thompson are all selected in the team. Fazackerley, who was adjudged the competitions best player last season, scored 330 runs @ 41.25 to be selected at the top of the order alongside 2017-18 Fazackerley Medallist Sterre Kalis, who is the Lions sole representative. The Bucks have two representatives with journey woman Anita Silva selected at first drop after claiming the batting averages award with 339 runs @ 84.75 and Emma Manix-Geeves selected in the team as wicket-keeper for a second consecutive season. 2015-16 Fazackerley Medalist Paris Crowe returns to the team in the middle order after a strong season with the developing Lightning. In addition to the Divins, the Knights have spinner Lauren Hepburn and medium pacer Johanna Jones as representatives in the team. Joining the pair in the bowling attack is North Hobart young gun and the Demon’s sole representative, Grace Pullen. Only 15 years old, Pullen makes her debut in the team of the year but can be expected to feature again in future after an outstanding season.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL 2017-18

Season 2017-18 has been another successful year for the Clarence District Cricket Club with all teams except the Under 17 girls making finals and our 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade and Under 17s all making grand finals. We had a total of 330 registered players in 26 teams across junior and senior competitions, as well as 87 MILO In2Cricket and MILO T20 Blast participants. Our function centre at Kangaroo Bay continues to grow thanks to the tireless work of our bar manager, Marty Green. We’ve also seen a marked improvement in our on-field facilities due to the dedication and effort of our ground’s curator, Steve. The club would like to thank all coaches and captains for the work they have put in, getting us into good positions in all grades. None of this would be possible without the strong support of our club partners Co-op Toyota, Hobart Financial Planning, Havinadip Bus repairs, Lyden Builders, Telegraph Hotel, Typeface, M & J Butchers on Clarence, Rogerson and Birch Surveyors, Justin McMullen Lawyers, Petrusma Lindisfarne, Millington’s Funeral home, Leap Health, Coca-Cola, McMurray Insurance Brokers, K & R Purdon General Engineers, Ilec, Cripps Bakehouse, Cugini and Oceana Health & Fitness.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL 2017-18

Led by and Alex Pyecroft, a young North Hobart brigade continued it’s resurgence as a CTPL powerhouse after finishing second on the CTPL First Grade ladder. It is a credit to the leaders of the club, the board and it’s supporters/volunteers for their tireless work over the past few seasons following a significant rebuild of the playing list after the club’s most successful period between 2000 and 2010 where the club won a combined eight First Grade titles. 2017/18 Rodwell Medallist Caleb Jewell (801 runs @ 44.50) has had an outstanding season for his boyhood club and along the way, has showcased his prestigious talent. Decimated by injuries and state players being unavailable due to the JLT One Day Cup, North Hobart’s best win came in Round 1 of the season, where they toppled reigning premiers and hot favourites South Hobart Sandy Bay by 5 runs at Kingston Twin Ovals, which was led by Jewell (50), Luke Williams (23) and skipper Alex Pyecroft (3/23). 2017/18 has also seen the club blood a number of First Grade debutants, player Nick Davis (15 years of age), Lewis Drury (16), Sam Lewis-Johnson (17), Ryan Graham-Daft (17), Dominic Rawlings (18) and James Beattie (18).

CTPL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2017-18

The CTPL Club Championship is a reflection of a clubs overall on-field health. The award takes into account results in all grades from 1st Grade to Under 15's in the men's competitions and also includes the results of the Women's and Girl’s Under 17’s competitions. Kingborough and Clarence again duked it out for the Club Championship in 2017-18 with the Knights finishing on top when it mattered to claim their 6th Club Championship and 3rd in four years. Kingborough finished in 1st place in 2nd Grade, Under 17’s Boy’s and Under 15’s. Combined with 2nd place finishes in Women’s, 3rd Grade and effectively Girl’s Under 17’s (finished 5th but tied with 2nd on points) the Knights collected 390 points to finish just 12.25 points clear of Clarence. A massive final round for North Hobart (295 points) where they claimed a perfect 40 points over Glenorchy saw them jump over an improving New Town (265 points) to finish 3rd and 4th respectively. University (237 points) staved off Lindisfarne (221 points) in the final round to keep above them in fifth and sixth with SHSB (179 points) and Glenorchy (86 points). LORD’S TAVERNERS SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact it is expected to be played not only within the Laws, but also within the Spirit of Game. Any action which is seen to abuse the Spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the Spirit of fair play rests with the captains. After each match in all Grades, the umpires award points reflecting each team’s performance against a pre-determined set of criteria that look to reward positive behaviour in accordance with the Spirit of Cricket. At the end of the season the club with the highest points tally received the Lord’s Taverners Spirit of Cricket Award. North Hobart CC claimed the 2017-18 Spirit of Cricket by the narrowest of margins from University of Tasmania CC, Kingborough DCC and New Town CC. It’s the Demons first Spirit of Cricket award since 2009-10. Only 0.1 separated each of 1st through to fourth in a remarkable finish. The Demon’s didn’t have a stand out grade, rather strong performances across all grades. The averages of 7/8 teams are greater than 6 which indicates a match played in good spirits. Such a number of clubs above this mark is a great reflection on the competition.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 2007/08 As the mercury hovered in the mid-30s all day, the Clarence batting order melted in the heat. Kingborough had all the momentum after running through an in-form batting line-up for just 188 before cruising to 78/1 at stumps on the first day. Skipper Adam French won the toss and surprisingly elected to field in the sweltering conditions. His decision paid off early as the Roos slumped to 14/3 in the sixth over. Jonathan Wells ran himself out attempting a suicide second run before Mark Divin had Grant Costelloe well caught at third slip by Brady Jones from a defensive prod. But the big wicket was that of captain Ben Harris who slashed at a wide short delivery from Brad Lovell but succeeded in edging behind.

Clarence’s Shannon Tubb together with then started a rescue mission before the Knight’s slow men clamped the game down. Leg-spinner Bryce Turnbull bowled 26 overs on the trot – separated only by the lunch and tea breaks – while Jason Shelton sent down 17 consecutive overs from the other end as they strangled the life out of the scoring. Wright was looking good and brought up his 50 from 98 balls but fifteen runs later he attempted to put Turnbull onto the Hill – only to sky a catch to Jones at mid wicket. Wade Irvine found some of the form he showed at the start of the season but when he was bowled by Turnbull for a patient 36 in 144 minutes on the last ball before tea, only the tail remained. The two spinners finished things off quickly, with Turnbull’s remarkable figures of 3/44 also contain- ing ten maidens. Shelton (3/42) claimed three of the last five wickets to wrap up the innings and give Kingborough nineteen overs to negotiate at the end of the day.

Openers Stuart Clark and Adam French moved effortlessly to 46/0, with French (34*) domi- nating the stand, being particularly savage on anything short or wide. Tubb struck alate blow by having Clark caught behind just before stumps and then had a confident lbw appeal against David Dawson turned down three balls later. But Dawson (25* from 24 balls) refused to retreat into his shell and planted the Roo’s left-arm chinaman over the fence. At stumps the Knights were comfortably placed at 73/1. Fortunes changed dramatically in Nathan Wegman’s opening over of day two. With his fifth ball he found the outside edge of French’s blade, with keeper Nathan Muir taking a sharp chance low to his right and the next delivery trapped the dangerous Mark Divin in front for a first ball duck – Kingborough 73/3.

When Damien Wright, who bowled unchanged throughout the first session despite a pecto- ral injury, had Brady Jones lbw and Tim Scott brilliantly caught by Ben Harris at second slip, the Knights had slipped to 101/5, and it could have been worse had Rob Davey not survived a shout for leg before from Wright shortly after. Through all the carnage Dawson stood firm, combining with Davey for a 51-run stand for the sixth wicket and a 58-run partnership with Jake Steele for the seventh to push his team to the brink of victory. The Knights eventually took a first innings’ lead during the middle session when Dawson took a single to deep square and a couple of overs later reach his century with a flick off his pads for four to fine leg. It was Dawson’s second century in the Grand Final in two seasons. He didn’t play a false stroke in his 259-minute stay at the crease; his 107 included 13 fours and a six.

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 2007/08 The scalps of Steele and Shelton to teenager – not used until the 81st over – after tea gave Clarence renewed hope they were still in the game, but a crucial 44-run last wicket stand from tailenders Brad Lovell (19) and Bryce Turnbull (24*) allowed Kingborough to reach 267 and lead by 79 runs.

By stumps, Clarence had wiped 39 off the deficit, losing Wells (3) in the process. Clarence would need to put the pedal to the floor the next morning to set up a big enough lead to give themselves time to run through Kingborough a second time to take the flag.

Captain Ben Harris made 50 and solid contributions came from Costelloe (33), Tubb (20) and a retiring Jason Harris (31), but the steady loss of wickets made things difficult. Divin (4/86) and Brad Lovell (5/86) bowled unchanged throughout the morning session, often to a 7-2 off -field and keeping the ball wide of the off-stump to reduce the run-rate. Clarence was dismissed for 175 on the stroke of lunch leaving the Knights to score 94 runs to seal an outright victory.

A few hearts would have missed a beat when Kingborough slipped to 39/3, but an unbeaten 31 from the Roger Woolley medalist David Dawson, also the man of the match last year, and Brady Jones’ 40* steered the team home – a late flurry of boundaries ended the contest with Jones lofting Wade Irvine for four to start the Knight’s celebrations.

“When we lost opening bowler Luke Swards at the end of last year I don’t think many people gave us much of a show without him,: said skipper Adam French. “He was such a big player, having taken 40 wickets in the season and was a big hole to fill. Also losing Michael Di Venuto, an integral member of the team, to state duties was hard to cover – but the young blokes stepped and we kept finding a way to win the close ones. Last year was a lot more emotionally charged, it was harder work for us to do it all again.”

Harris praised his team’s attitude, but admitted that after slumping to 14/3 inside the first 20 minutes on the first day the task was always going to be a hard one. “We lost those wickets and played catch -up from then on. We definitely showed the club spirit of hanging in and fighting to the end – all the boys did that.”

47

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1997/98 The last round of the roster season again provided surprises. North Hobart ensured its place in the finals with an outright result over Lindisfarne who slipped to third, and Kingborough claimed second spot after defeating Glenorchy outright. Clarence held on to top place de- spite losing its first game of the season to New Town. Final standings were – Clarence 136.75, Kingborough 127.39, North Hobart 122.97 and Lindisfarne 123.16, then daylight.

The semi-final at Bellerive between Clarence and North Hobart was an outstanding match. North’s opener Todd Pinnington carried his bat to score a magnificent 211* out of his team’s 313, yet this was not enough to contain the minor premiers, Clarence (348/8), with captain Andrew Dykes, enthralling those who watched, hitting a brilliant 189.

In the other semi Lindisfarne was contained to 244 by Kingborough, who convincingly stormed into the final when it posted 246/4.

Kingborough made a dream start to the final after sending Clarence in; Gerard Denton trapped Grant Costelloe in front with the first ball of the match. His dismissal brought the dangerous Andrew Dykes to the wicket but after scoring a cautious 14 he too was trapped lbw, this time by the other paceman, Robert Hodgson, before a rain squawl sent the players off for a short break in play. Apart from delaying the action, the rain did nothing to stop the fall of wickets with opener Rod Marsland, fending at the first ball of Denton’s sixth over, picked up by Jarrad Williams at short fine leg for two with no addition to the score and Clar- ence was struggling at 17/3.

Ben Harris and Duncan Hurd brought up Clarence’s fifty in the twentieth over as Denton was replaced by Hodgson at the northern end, the first spell earning him 2/20 from 10 overs. The change brought immediate success for Hodgson when Harris, on 8, tried to pull the fourth ball but only succeeded in hitting it high on the splice and providing Tim Scott with an easy catch at short leg – 50/4.

48

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1997/98 The situation became desperate for Clarence when Hurd, who’d just dispatched Peter Di Venuto the boundary to take his score to 25, guided the next ball into the safe hands of Wil- liams in the gully.

That dismissal brought Roger Woolley and Matthew Clingeleffer together and they saw their team to lunch at 57/5. This pair was to become Clarence’s saviours for they battled through the middle session and combined for a 116-run 6th wicket partnership before Woolley was dismissed for 70, made from 126 balls in 160 minutes, including seven fours and a six.

Clingeleffer continued his defiant innings and found a willing partner in Mark Colegrave – the duo adding 63 in a run-a-ball 7th wicket stand before Clingeleffer was also out with his score on 70. He was at the crease for 229 minutes, faced 189 balls and hit six fours. Vital runs were added by the tail and there was some relief in the Clarence rooms with a score of 257 to defend.

The Kingborough attack was led by Denton who troubled all batsmen with his pace and short deliveries, four of which resulted in wickets, in an excellent haul of 6/69 off 25.2 overs. Hodgson (2/56 from 23 overs) and Peter Di Venuto (2/39 off 18 overs) were the other suc- cessful bowlers.

On the second day, the Knights got away to a poor start when Stuart Clark was caught by Dale Wickham for four off the last ball of Colegrave’s first over. That brought Michael Di Ve- nuto to the wicket and he immediately set about the bowling. With Daniel Elliott almost a spectator at the other end, he raised his fifty off only 57 balls. The dashing left-hander was out ten minutes before lunch with the score at 97 when he cut Darren Smith to backward point where Grant Costelloe took a good diving catch. He‘d made 59 from 72 balls in 102 minutes, with six fours and a six. Kingborough went to lunch at 106/2 but lost two quick wickets after the break – Elliott pushed a catch to Costelloe at short cover off the bowling of Smith to be dismissed for 20, followed soon after by Tim Scott (17), brilliantly by Clingeleffer off leg-spinner Wickham.

Peter Di Venuto and Jarrod Williams came together with the game in the balance and the score on 124/4; and Kingborough could have been in more trouble had Wickham held a hot chance off his own bowling when Peter Di Venuto was on six and the score 140. Slowly but surely, he and Williams not only steadied the innings but began to accumulate runs, helped by some uncharacteristic fielding errors late in the afternoon.

At tea Kingborough was 199/4 with Williams on 40 and Di Venuto 34; Williams was first to reach his half-century, his push through covers also bringing up the 100-run partnership. Di Venuto brought up his fifty shortly afterwards, his effort taking 117 balls with seven bounda- ries. The Clarence captain changed his bowlers regularly in an effort to find a breakthrough but to no avail.

49

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1987/88 Perennial finalist Clarence slipped to third place after six successive seasons as minor prem- iers but, strengthened by the return of state players, had the overall depth to overcome SHSB in their semi-final at the TCA Ground despite, at one stage, being 74/5 chasing 215. Roger Woolley (60) and Duncan Hurd (76) steered the Roos’s recovery to 245/9 when play was halted. In the other semi, Glenorchy struggled to recover after losing the toss at Bel- lerive Oval – its 168 proved a cakewalk for New Town with skipper Keith Bradshaw leading the way with 104*. It would be New Town’s first grand-final appearance since 1971. Clar- ence was slightly favoured for the final despite an indifferent season. With the experience of Brian Davison and Roger Woolley back in the team, Clarence was a far better balanced elev- en than when the teams met earlier at New Town when Geoff Rowlands had them in a spin.

New Town won the toss and elected to bat on a favourable strip. The Townies lost openers Malcolm Wilson (1) and John Smeaton (12) in the first session, which left captain Keith Brad- shaw and Kevin Treweek to set the foundations of a good score. The duo shared a partner- ship of 80 before Bradshaw was trapped lbw by Michael Tame. He’d scored 55 off 167 balls, including two boundaries, and his stay lasted 168 minutes. From there the scoring rate slowed. Treweek was joined by David Woolley, who spent an hour in the middle for twelve before falling to Tame with the score on 161/4; when Stuart Chilcott was caught and bowled by Colegrave for seven off the first ball of the second new ball in the 90th over, New Town were 171/5.

Peter Cole looked to liven up proceedings when he came to the wicket but he was bowled for ten by Colegrave’s second delivery after the drinks break. Representing the last of the recognized batsmen Darren Bacon contributed only five before he was blasted out by Greg Campbell after facing a pace blitz from Clarence, and Treweek was run out at an inopportune time when Colegrave’s quick return from backward square saw him caught short attempting a suicidal second run and New Town slumped to 197/8. New Town’s sixteen-year-old keeper Brett Williams and opening bowler Bruce Harriss succeeded in lifting the score and when Harriss, who played an enterprising knock of 15*, lofted the final ball of the day to the boundary the stumps score of 218/8 gave their team some hope of defending the following day.

Colegrave was the most successful Clarence bowler with 3/73 off 31 overs; his pace col- league Campbell picked up 2/66 and the economical Tame returned 2/26 from 21 overs. The pacemen found enough movement in the wicket to make life difficult for New Town all day and, backing them up, spinner Ian Bevan, who had taken 46 wickets in the roster series, again proved difficult to get away with 0/36 off 27 overs.Clarence required two runs per over for victory but sailed to 244/6 off just 70 overs when Davison closed the innings on tea, about two hours before the scheduled end of play. Davison said Clarence had worked out a plan. “We didn’t want to go out there and take our time getting the runs; you lose wickets that way. The wicket was seaming about so we had to go for our shots.”

WINDING BACK THE CLOCK 1987/88 New Town got the start it hoped for when potential match-winner Bevan was caught at first slip by Bradshaw off the fifth ball of the morning sent down by Harriss. Davison promoted himself in the order – a move designed to put quick runs on the board – and hit up 29 runs in 67 minutes before he was caught by Wilson off Harriss. When opener Scott Clark (15) de- parted eighteen runs late, at 58/3, Woolley and Ian Huck were left with a battle on their hands.

Woolley went for almost everything he could lay his bat on, and his 82 came from 99 balls. With Huck (42) in support, they formed the partnership New Town didn’t want – it was worth 115 and took Clarence out of the danger zone. It was left to the two batsmen who had carried Clarence out of trouble on several occasions during the season; Dale Kemp and Michael Granger moved the score beyond the New Town target and when play was halted Kemp was unbeaten on 40 and Granger 21*.

New Town skipper Keith Bradshaw was the best bowler with 4/85 troubling most batsmen with his movement off the pitch.

CLUB CORNER The Knights have enjoyed a successful season on and off the field in season 2017/18 with many highlights including hosting games for the National U/19 Men’s Championships in December, two games of the WNCL and a Toyota Futures League game in March. The Club is indebted to its volunteer base for the work involved in preparing for these games, including the catering which has been well received by all teams and officials alike. Under first year Coach, Clive Rose, the Club has continued to foster the development of our Junior players and congratulations go to those that represented the State in various teams throughout the season. The coaching team are to be congratulated on all the achievements for this season including, winning The Club Championship which came about as a result of fine performances from all teams participating in Premier League Roster games from U/15 upwards. The Club has also increased its playing numbers in junior teams during the past year which created a lot more work for our coaches, team managers and the Junior Coaching Coordinator Jeff Ross and his team. Thank you to all involved, your work has been very much appreciated. The Club was successful in winning its first U/18 Vacation Title in season 2017/18 and the Woman’s premier league team also won their premiership and all associated with both teams are to be congratulated on their performances. A big thank you must go to our new major sponsor, LJ Hooker – Kingborough, and the continued support from Adapt which has enabled us to conduct junior academies in the preseason for up and coming players. Our first participants are now regular players in 1st grade. The Knights would like to wish all teams participating in Grand Finals this weekend the very best.

Season 17/18 saw a changing of the guard, with a revitalised board and coaching group, led by Ben Hilfenhaus (Men’s Coach) and Ben Harrison (High Performance Manager), who were ably supported by Jesse Greenwood (Women’s Coach), Enrico di Venuto, Graeme Cunningham and Darren McNees. We saw development across the whole club, and particularly in our women’s program where our U17 Girls made the Semi-Final and our Women’s side had a solid season, finishing 5th, and were one win away from finals. Our Men’s First Grade side brought home some silverware winning the Kookaburra Cup Final, and we were represented by our Second Grade side who made the Semi- Final. We had over 10 state junior and senior representatives this season, and were very proud of Tim Paine who has cemented his place in the Australian Test side. We have a growing volunteer base, who have worked tirelessly over the season, particularly around our junior cricket program. We thank our sponsors Davey Street Discount Pharmacy, Tasmanian University Union, Customs House Hotel, Commonwealth Bank, The Veggie Patch Guy, Knight Frank, Vermey’s Butcher, Edge Living and the Decor-Raters. We continue to strengthen our partnership with the University, who have assisted in our Video Scoreboard project which is expected to be completed in April 2018. We are also assisting the University in entering a side in the Australian Uni Games T20 tournament in December this year, where the winning University has the opportunity to play at the World Games, this year held in Columbo (this is open to all UTAS students). We look forward to further developments in the coming years, and we are very excited for what season 18/19 has in store for the Lions! 63
