That competition was played under the auspices of the NSW Public Service Cricket Association, of which the Sydney Morning C.A is its successor, having changed its name in the 1994/95 season. This occurred to more accurately reflect the nature of the association, as the number of public service connected teams had been steadily declining and the amount of independently formed teams was on the increase and was by then the vast majority of the teams. This season we welcome 3 new teams: Steady Stream CC, Wood Duck County and the Rockwall Rebels. We hope their initial season is an enjoyable one and the first of many. Here is a preview of the season, division by division. 1ST DIVISION The last three seasons has provided three different premiers and these three teams ended up 1,2 and 3 at the end of last season. Allstars finally made the breakthrough for their first ever top division title and look to be the team to beat this season again, having finally got the monkey off their back. Led now by Mr Mix Quick Fix (free plug there) and the Allstars have also been re-inforced over the past couple of years with a few of the other hard-heads from the now defunct multi 1st grade premiership winning team Bat & Ball XI. After being adjudged the grand final man of the match last season, veteran Allstar, Martin Contempree could use this as a springboard to bigger and better things, as long as his recent elevation to Sydney’s glitterati A-List does not take his focus away from what he does best. Runners-up to the Allstars, 3 time champion Easts, will be looking to go one better, and will be relying on last season’s revelation Sam Hastwell to spearhead their quest for a 4th top grade title. Along with former Surry Hills stalwarts Bram Tulloch and Vasi Cheriachan, Easts will be looking to the old warhorse Ben White and the mind games of Shahan Ahmed (if he plays) to go one better this season. MPK took out the first division title 2 years ago and will look back on last season as a trail of missed opportunities, unable to chase down a low total against the eventual premiers in the preliminary final. They’ll need to get a little more out of all their top line players as no MPK players ended up in the top ten batting ot bowling aggregates for the season. The X factor for the Dragons could be Paul Argyros, if he can limit the time he spends on the SMCA message board and is able to overcome the mental hurdles he has when he has to play a bit far from home. The 2nd division premiers, East Sydney have been promoted to this grade and kudos to them for openly coming out (in the cricketing sense) and saying they want to compete at this level, and not pedalling out the usual excuses that appear when a team wins a grade and claims they should not be promoted the next season ! Look to Sam Wardlaw and Lucas “The Duke” Frederick to build on their good seasons with the bat last season, and with Espie Watt & Hayden “The House of” Windsor leading the way with the ball, I think East Sydney can make the semis. Fourth and Fifth in last season’s premier division, Cricketers Arms Gold (now Shire Wanderers) & Red Sun did not illustrate a lot of confidence as they both requested a demotion to 2nd division for this year. So it seems they fear mixing it with the big boys again, which may have already put both teams behind the eight-ball before the season even starts. I would love to be proven wrong though. Semi Final predictions: Allstars, Easts, MPK Dragons and East Sydney 2ND DIVISION This season will see this division crown a first time winner of the 2nd Division premiership. The Troopers went agonizingly close last season, falling just 10 runs short of their conquerors East Sydney in the Grand Final, and will be hoping that the old adage that you have to lose four grand finals to win your first will come true. They have perhaps picked up the coup of the whole association, tempting SMCA stalwart Neil McNamara over to the dark side after Neil took a year off after his beloved Mullets CC folded. He joins a few ex-team-mates in the shape of Anthony “Bowling by the Bald Man” Campey and Sid Cavallaro who were not as devastated as Neil, and quickly jumped ship to the Troopers after the Mullets demise in 2009/10. Not to mention, , which I won’t, that Neil will also be renewing acquaintances with former Glebe team-mate, the quiet man of the SMCA, Jay Patel. They will be locking horns with their sister team GSNDS again after GSNDS fell into 1st Division in the second half of last season, because, in the words of the secretary “Somebody had to !” Neither of these 2 teams have won a full summer title and this season could be their year. I have been told by a reliable source that apparently Clinton Perren have built on their mid season raid of the dead Fumblers A carcass by recruiting more players from their rotting remains so the Perrens should be able to improve on last season where they went out in straight sets, losing both finals matches after making the top 2. Seaweed had the top run scorer in 2nd Division last season, Steve Mitchell whose 565 runs in the regular season broke a long standing association record. But they will have to not just rely on Steve if they wish to be serious contenders for the title. St.George Lions, the 3rd division premiers, have been promoted after winning three finals games in a row to take out the 3rd grade title, so they have showed that when the big end of season matches come around they are there when the whips are cracking. Finally, one of the new teams, Steady Stream CC, make up the last team in the grade. Although an unknown quantity at this stage their pedigree seems to suggest that they will be a handful for the other teams and should not be taken lightly. Look out for Simon Cowell and Mick “The Raging” Bullen to have big seasons. Semi Final Predictions: GSNDS, Steady Stream, St.George Lions & Clinton Perren 3 3RD DIVISION What can I say about PSJ F&C’s. During the regular season they set the world on fire but come finals time they leave it all at home. Having made the top 2 in each of their 4 seasons, they have actually improved the last 2 years by making the grand final but have not been able to crack the big one yet. Come that one day in April, they will need to lay siege to that fortress of solitude they have found themselves in, to once and for all cast aside their growing reputations that they get stage fright when the stakes are the highest ! The Glenhaven Gunners, in their 2 seasons in the SMCA, are a bit like this too, flying high only to fall apart during the semis as some of their players actually want to go and play another sport, how daft is that ! Cricketers Arms Blue, (the only club that has a pornographic sounding team name in the SMCA), with a plethora of entertainment types in the side should also be very competitive again in this grade, especially if Steve “I haven’t really been typecast” Le Marquand and Greg “There’s a fine line between the truth and defamation” Duffy, manage to play a few games. Look out also for the two Aaron’s (Beach and Burton) to shine. The 4th Division premiers, Fumblers B get a chance to build on their 2nd SMCA title, which they won last season and will be looking to show they can mix it with the big boys in 3rds.

Robin Walsh was President from the foundation of the organisation at Stormont in 2007 until he stepped down early in 2013 to take up the Presidency of Cricket Ireland. The CWI are immensely proud that one of our number should be recognised thus and doubly so that Robin filled the role with such dignity and commitment. It turned out to be both a tremendously successful year on the pitch and a historic one off it, and we are fortunate that a man with a trained eye and stylish pen was there to witness it all — and share it with us. Throughout his presidency Robin wrote a regular diary which appeared on the Cricket Ireland website but it clearly deserves a larger audience and a permanent place on the growing shelf of Irish cricketing literature. • 2020 Yearbook Troubling Times
Inspiring cricketers to enjoy a lifelong love of cricket 2020 YEARBOOK TROUBLING TIMES t would be irresponsible of us not to say something about the present circumstances in which we all find ourselves. In the cricket world, we have only a minority part to play: there are far more serious I issues in the wider world. With sporting events being dropped like flies it was only a matter of time before cricket joined the list of those suspended by the spread of the Coronavirus. When sports all across the world suspend their playing schedules, you know that sport is not the prime consideration. This pandemic has been spreading at an alarming rate. It’s a very contagious virus. It’s a clear case of being safe, not sorry. The cancelling of major cricket matches is a rare occurrence and casts the sport back to the dark days of the two world wars. Test matches were suspended in early 1914 and didn’t resume until late 1920 because of the First World War. The gap in competition was slightly longer during the Second World War, stretching from August 1939 until March 1946. In the early stages of this pandemic, plans were being made to cancel everything for two weeks and then see if resumption would be possible. Now, as you know, all social cricket is suspended until further notice. In addition all schools were told to close with effect from the weekend of 20 March. Our first priority is the health and safety of our members and our colleagues. Perhaps this situation will clear itself up before the end of the season: perhaps it will last into next year.

MATCH REPORTS MATCH REPORTS – ROUND 8 Season 2020/21 MATCH REPORTS Stats by Smeads Games Milestone After starting his Senior career in 1985/86, Anthony Crowe played his 350th Senior game in this round. Over his career, Crowey has amassed 734 wickets (2nd overall) @ 15.23. This includes 29 5 wicket innings, 1 10 wicket match and best bowling figures of 9-32. He now classes himself as a batsman, with 3597 runs @ 19.87 including 4 centuries, 3 of which have been scored in the last 2 seasons. Fittingly Crowey is a Life Member (inducted 2011/12) and also a Hall of Fame member (inducted 2013/14). Michelle Ben White has become the 6th player to take a Michelle with his figures of 5/44 in the 1st XI on the weekend. This takes Ben's wicket tally to 17 for the season, and 5 ahead of his brother Josh who missed this match. Bowling Masterclass The 8th XI kids put on a bowling masterclass on Saturday with all 4 bowlers taking at least 1 wicket as they dismissed Croydon North for 9. This is the lowest ever opposition total on record surpassing the 18 scored by Montrose's 1st XI in 1926. No debuts this week, however, one of our earlier debutantes, Lachie Dines, scored his maiden half century with 51 not out for the 8ths. • Statistics Booklet 2015-16
Statistics Booklet 2015-16 Premier League Statistician Report prepared by Bob Cotgrove Cricket Tasmania Premier League (CTPL) First Grade Activity. [see Table 1] Despite generally fine weather throughout the summer this season’s First Grade activity, measured by the total balls bowled, 41175, was the lowest for 5 seasons when wet weather restricted the 2010- 11 season to just 38739 balls. Last season 42724 balls were bowled and three summers ago, in the 2012-13 season, 47794 balls were bowled, an extra 1103 overs. Partly this reduction in activity may be due to a decrease in the number of scheduled matches, from 21 matches (complete round-robin matches in each of the three formats, Twenty20, One-Day and Two-Day) in 2012-13 to just 17 matches this season (5 matches in each of the Twenty20 and One-Day formats and 7 matches in the Two-Day format). A total of 25738 runs were scored, the lowest since the 2010-11 season, for the loss of 1139 wickets, the lowest since the 2009-10 season. The number of runs scored per wicket lost, 22.60, was slightly higher than the previous 3 seasons but continues the trend of consistency in the low 20s range. The scoring rate of 62.51 runs per 100 balls was comparable with recent seasons in the low 60s range, considerably higher than the trend for scoring rates to be below 50 runs per 100 balls that prevailed prior to the mid-1990s. Given the consistency of runs per wicket, the generally higher scoring rate is mirrored by the generally lower loss rate of 36.15 balls per wicket this season.
