Robin Walsh was President from the foundation of the organisation at Stormont in 2007 until he stepped down early in 2013 to take up the Presidency of Cricket Ireland. The CWI are immensely proud that one of our number should be recognised thus and doubly so that Robin filled the role with such dignity and commitment. It turned out to be both a tremendously successful year on the pitch and a historic one off it, and we are fortunate that a man with a trained eye and stylish pen was there to witness it all — and share it with us. Throughout his presidency Robin wrote a regular diary which appeared on the Cricket Ireland website but it clearly deserves a larger audience and a permanent place on the growing shelf of Irish cricketing literature.     Inspiring cricketers to enjoy a lifelong love of cricket 2020 YEARBOOK TROUBLING TIMES t would be irresponsible of us not to say something about the present circumstances in which we all find ourselves. In the cricket world, we have only a minority part to play: there are far more serious I issues in the wider world. With sporting events being dropped like flies it was only a matter of time before cricket joined the list of those suspended by the spread of the Coronavirus. When sports all across the world suspend their playing schedules, you know that sport is not the prime consideration. This pandemic has been spreading at an alarming rate. It’s a very contagious virus. It’s a clear case of being safe, not sorry. The cancelling of major cricket matches is a rare occurrence and casts the sport back to the dark days of the two world wars. Test matches were suspended in early 1914 and didn’t resume until late 1920 because of the First World War. The gap in competition was slightly longer during the Second World War, stretching from August 1939 until March 1946. In the early stages of this pandemic, plans were being made to cancel everything for two weeks and then see if resumption would be possible. Now, as you know, all social cricket is suspended until further notice. In addition all schools were told to close with effect from the weekend of 20 March. Our first priority is the health and safety of our members and our colleagues. Perhaps this situation will clear itself up before the end of the season: perhaps it will last into next year.

    MATCH REPORTS MATCH REPORTS – ROUND 8 Season 2020/21 MATCH REPORTS Stats by Smeads Games Milestone After starting his Senior career in 1985/86, Anthony Crowe played his 350th Senior game in this round. Over his career, Crowey has amassed 734 wickets (2nd overall) @ 15.23. This includes 29 5 wicket innings, 1 10 wicket match and best bowling figures of 9-32. He now classes himself as a batsman, with 3597 runs @ 19.87 including 4 centuries, 3 of which have been scored in the last 2 seasons. Fittingly Crowey is a Life Member (inducted 2011/12) and also a Hall of Fame member (inducted 2013/14). Michelle Ben White has become the 6th player to take a Michelle with his figures of 5/44 in the 1st XI on the weekend. This takes Ben's wicket tally to 17 for the season, and 5 ahead of his brother Josh who missed this match. Bowling Masterclass The 8th XI kids put on a bowling masterclass on Saturday with all 4 bowlers taking at least 1 wicket as they dismissed Croydon North for 9. This is the lowest ever opposition total on record surpassing the 18 scored by Montrose's 1st XI in 1926. No debuts this week, however, one of our earlier debutantes, Lachie Dines, scored his maiden half century with 51 not out for the 8ths.     CL 2021 REPORT_Layout 1 08/02/2021 12:42 Page 1 ANNUAL REPORT Spring 2021 CL 2021 REPORT_Layout 1 08/02/2021 12:42 Page 2 Welcome from Cricket Leinster PHILIP SMITH General Manager HILST the Covid-19 pandemic re- sulted in a heavily curtailed 2020 club cricket season, it was hearten- Wing to experience the strong sense of community which prevailed throughout as clubs embraced shorter form competitions, increased oversight and new safety protocols for training and playing the game. In that context, we were delighted to get competi- tions completed across all categories and age groups – men, women and youths – with a huge emphasis on participation and camaraderie. It has already proven to be a long winter however we have some- thing solid to build on for 2021. Some highlights of 2020 included: • Your Club/Your Province Draw which raised over €55,000 for the benefit of clubs • Women’s & Girls programme under Isobel Joyce’s oversight and guidance • Open Competition Finals which saw seven Finals played over two days (four live-streamed with com- mentary) • Completion of all Youth Competitions with al- most 1,000 youth players registered for the first time • Continued expansion of our Development team with strong club engagement and support • Lightning winning both the IP50 and IP20 tro- phies (again) whilst remaining unbeaten CRICKET IS Club & school cricket is the life-blood of our game and our focus over the winter period is to ensure that our clubs can sustain themselves into 2021. KEEP EACH X In that context, we have been providing our clubs with information, training and guidance in areas such as coach education, child safeguarding, fundraising Covid-19, it was hugely important that club cricket and the purchase of essential playing and grounds took place in 2020 albeit on a curtailed basis and equipment for next season.
