PRESIDENTSREPORT We have now reachedthe end of the cricketseason - my first as Presidentand it is MARINE PRODUCTMARKETING timeto reflecton whathas beenachieved throughout the year. PTY.LTD Our main aim is to providea cricketcompetition for boys and girls of the Sutherland Shireand help them developtheir skills. This year we had around't 100 players registeredin the under 8 to under 16 competitions. As with a numberof other Associationsthis is a decreasefrom previousyears and somethingwe are lookingat ,, addressing. One way of doingthis is to lookat our competitionstructure. There is a SLIPPORTING COilIMUNITY committeeof clubvolunteers currently looking at a structurefor nextyear's competition, takinginto consideration input from the ACB, NSW Cricket, Educators and a jointstudy AWAREIVESSFOR YOUTH by NSWCricket and NewcastleUniversity. Their recommendations will form important ACTIVI TY IN SU THERL/IND inputinto the competitionoffered next season. We alsohad around300 childrenlearning basic cricket skills through the Have-a-go SHIRE" programmeand I would like to thank the volunteersat Gymea,Bosco-Engadine, Aquinasand lllawong who make these programmes possible. One of ourchallenges is to bringthese children into the SSJCA competition. PROTjDLYSTJPPORT In developingour players'skills we haverun joint gala days with the GradeClub and thankthem for theirsupport. The GradeClub has alsoprovided opportunities for some SUTHERLANDJUNIOR CRTCKETASSOCL\TION of our 164 cricketersto playa few gamesof gradecricket to helpthem progressto the nextstage of theircricketing careers and once again we thankthem for this initiative. STJTHERLANDCR.;E CRICKET CLUB Cricketersare also helpedin their developmentby havingopportunities to play at a higherlevel through representative cricket. We had teamsin each of the age groups this year and also providedother opportunitiesthrough the President'sCompetition. Nine of our playerswent beyondrepresentative cricket and joined EmergingBlues LOOK FOR OUR QUALITY SEAFOODPRODUCTS Squads.Three players were selected from our WatsonShield team in the CityU17 AT YOTIRLOCAL WOOLWORTHS & FRA.NKLINS squadfor NSW. st.iPERt\tARt(Elts This year the ACB and The AustralianInstitute of Sportchose our Associationto providea numberof olderfast bowlersto be involvedin a "SPOT"study on spinal injuriescaused by an excessivebowling workload. Eachplayer was evaluatedfor actionand medicallyfor injury. They also had to maintainaccurate bowling records throughoutthe seasonso their actualworkloads could be determined.28 of our playerscompleted all the requirementsand will be givenindividual analyses of their bowlingto help them improveperformance and reduceinjury. A full reportwill be availableto the SSJCAlater in theyear. I wouldlike to thankSteve Mulally who did a marvelousjob co-ordinatingthis programmefor the SSJCA- withouthis persistance theprogramme would not have been as valuable. To run any cricketcompetition takes a lot of volunteers.I wouldlike to thankall those peoplewho assistedin clubadministration, coaching, managing, scoring, umpiring andsetting up groundseach week - manywill have put in lotsof hoursthroughout the season.
