PRESIDENTSREPORT

We have now reachedthe end of the cricketseason - my first as Presidentand it is MARINE PRODUCTMARKETING timeto reflecton whathas beenachieved throughout the year. PTY.LTD Our main aim is to providea cricketcompetition for boys and girls of the Sutherland Shireand help them developtheir skills. This year we had around't 100 players registeredin the under 8 to under 16 competitions. As with a numberof other Associationsthis is a decreasefrom previousyears and somethingwe are lookingat ,, addressing. One way of doingthis is to lookat our competitionstructure. There is a SLIPPORTING COilIMUNITY committeeof clubvolunteers currently looking at a structurefor nextyear's competition, takinginto consideration input from the ACB, NSW Cricket, Educators and a jointstudy AWAREIVESSFOR YOUTH by NSWCricket and NewcastleUniversity. Their recommendations will form important ACTIVI TY IN SU THERL/IND inputinto the competitionoffered next season. We alsohad around300 childrenlearning basic cricket skills through the Have-a-go SHIRE" programmeand I would like to thank the volunteersat Gymea,Bosco-Engadine, Aquinasand lllawong who make these programmes possible. One of ourchallenges is to bringthese children into the SSJCA competition. PROTjDLYSTJPPORT In developingour players'skills we haverun joint gala days with the GradeClub and thankthem for theirsupport. The GradeClub has alsoprovided opportunities for some SUTHERLANDJUNIOR CRTCKETASSOCL\TION of our 164 cricketersto playa few gamesof gradecricket to helpthem progressto the nextstage of theircricketing careers and once again we thankthem for this initiative. STJTHERLANDCR.;E CRICKET CLUB Cricketersare also helpedin their developmentby havingopportunities to play at a higherlevel through representative cricket. We had teamsin each of the age groups this year and also providedother opportunitiesthrough the President'sCompetition. Nine of our playerswent beyondrepresentative cricket and joined EmergingBlues LOOK FOR OUR QUALITY SEAFOODPRODUCTS Squads.Three players were selected from our WatsonShield team in the CityU17 AT YOTIRLOCAL WOOLWORTHS & FRA.NKLINS squadfor NSW. st.iPERt\tARt(Elts This year the ACB and The AustralianInstitute of Sportchose our Associationto providea numberof olderfast bowlersto be involvedin a "SPOT"study on spinal injuriescaused by an excessivebowling workload. Eachplayer was evaluatedfor actionand medicallyfor injury. They also had to maintainaccurate bowling records throughoutthe seasonso their actualworkloads could be determined.28 of our playerscompleted all the requirementsand will be givenindividual analyses of their bowlingto help them improveperformance and reduceinjury. A full reportwill be availableto the SSJCAlater in theyear. I wouldlike to thankSteve Mulally who did a marvelousjob co-ordinatingthis programmefor the SSJCA- withouthis persistance theprogramme would not have been as valuable.

To run any cricketcompetition takes a lot of volunteers.I wouldlike to thankall those peoplewho assistedin clubadministration, coaching, managing, scoring, umpiring andsetting up groundseach week - manywill have put in lotsof hoursthroughout the season. I would also like to thankthe UmpiresAssociation who providedumpires each week andfor the representativematches - yourassistance is muchappreciated. SECRETARY'SREPORT

The committeehas attemptedto addressthis situationduring the seasonand to this end a numberof PeterSmith. reviewcommittees were established to examineany underlyingfactors for thisdecline.

Theirfindings and recommendationshave been presentedto the committee. The AustralianCricket Board released their junior cricket pollcy in November2002 and this documenttogether with the recommendedcompetition guidelines prepared by Cricket NSW will needto be consideredin conjunctionwith the recommendationsof our own reviewsand the needsof cricketin the Shireinto the future.

Jayproduced his best 519olf 12 overs,Brody, Luke each with two & Tim Gosperhis first for the season. We struggledafter a good openingstand from Chris& Stephen, however Jay witha controlled50 saw us homewith 10 oversto spare.

Jay Davis50 & 5/9, LukeMaloney 2/24 BrodyHarurin 2/32 We had beenhearing about the strengthof theirbatting but with tight bowling and some wonderfuloutfield catching we were able to keep sustainedpressure on them to eventuallydismiss them for 94!!

+J 44 Theteam was showinggreat discipline, with good fielding and well controlled bowling a HAROLDMOORE SHIELD feature, thus the boys were able to putcontinuous pressure on theopposition and allow us to defendsmall targets, however could we chasea total? Our next match was againstHornsby, which had been transferredfrom its original groundto anotheroval running along the GalstonGorge escarpment. The wicket was totallyunder prepared however both teams wanted to play. Hornsbywon the toss and elected to baton a wicketthat was both seaming around and takingsome spin. After finallyadjusting to the conditionswe managedto dismiss Hornsbyfor a modest134.An easy game this. No way!We struggledfrom the start and againit was not our batsmenbut our all-rounderswho carriedthe day with Sutho eventuallyfalling across the line to wina nail-biterby 3 runs! lllawarraat PortKembla was our nextmatch and for the firsttime we scoredover 200 thanksto a great97 n.o. by Josh Zywitz.Unfortunately time ran out beforeJosh was ableto getwhat would have been a muchdeserved century. In yet anothertight finish we managedto dismisslllawarra for 197. Littlehas been said of thebowling however Mathew Earley,Mark Giovenco and Nathan Whittinghamall did a terrificjob, all bowling an excellentline and length. Ourfinal match was againstManly at CaringbahOval. Halfcenturies to bothMathew Corkand MitchellKrywulycz allowed us to post a competitive205 whichproved to be toomuch for Manlywho were all out for 165. We had won 5 out of 5 and lookedforward to the semi-finalswith some confidence. Afterdrawing Bankstown at HurstvilleOval unfortunately we allowedtheir batsmen to get on top afterholding them for the first25 overs. The 280 they had scoredproved to be too much althoughwe looked goodafter scoring at 7 an over for the first 50,eventuallybeing all out for 200 BackRow: Peter Smith (Coach),Skipp Richards,Matt Ryder,John Hair, Luke Congratulationsto all the boys who representedin the WeblinShield this year. Daenell,Terry Ryder (Manager). Althoughthere have been several changes to the makeupof thisgroup of boys, they FrontRow: StevenSmith, Elliot Mason, Beau Peterson,Anthony Singleton, Aaron havealways represented the Shirewith distinction both on and off the field.A special Mall,Liam Casey, David Savic. (Absent: Ben Jamieson) thanksto GeoffCork and to TonyTrudgett for theirassistance during the seasonand alsoto the parentswho showed such great support for all the boys. As the seasonbegan we hada sensethat we couldget throughto thefinals and this was reinforcedin the first game. We came up againstCamden who had been KerryRichards. semifinalistslast year and annihilated them. On a veryhot (40 deg +) dayon a treeless "paddock"at Camdenwe bowledfirst and after 30 oversCamden were out for 70. Coach all All bowlersstuck to theirguns in theheat and the fielding was good. Anthony Singleton and SkippRichards opened the bowlingand aftercompleting their spell Camden were 3-12-l wicketeach and a runout. JohnHairand Beau Petersson bowled the next 10 oversalso taking a wicketeach and leaving Camden 5-33. AaronMall (2 wickets)and StevenSmith (3 wickets)completed the job in the next 10 overs. We then batted aggressivelyto scorethe runswithout losing a wicketin 12 overs- LiamCasey ending with35 notout and John Hair 39 notout.

The secondgame was againstCentral Coast - a teamwe haveplayed every year and beaten, but each year the scoreswere gettingcloser. Unfortunatelywe did not bowl welland Central Coast scored 192 in theirinnings. We thenstruggled with the bat and when StevenSmith was out in the 45'nover for 76 we were 5 - 116. Eventuallywe needed50 runsfrom 9 oversand werein troublewhen Aaron Mall and SkippRichards 46 came together. They guidedus closerto victoryand it came down to the last ball wherewe needed1 to tie or 2 to win. A goodwell pitchedup ball saw us squeezea W. S. GEESHIELD quicksingle to shortmidon. The fielderchose the heroicoption and shiedat the stumps, missed and 2 overthrowsgave us a veryhard fought victory.

Round 3 was againstCanterbury West and we were Sharifuled. We bowledand fieldedwell but withoutluck. However, they had shariful lslam, one of the better battersin the competitionand playing3'o Grade for BalmainUTS. He battedvery well andmade a chanceless170 in theirscore of 277. We couldonly manage 6-210 withLuke Daenell (24), Matt Ryder (52) and Ben Jamieson (67 not out) all batting well.

The fou(h gamewas our crunchgame against St George. We win we go throughthey win they go through. We had alreadybeaten St Georgein the trialsand were confident 'for of doingit again. We startedwell, bowlingthem out 134in the 58thover with Aaron Mall and StevenSmith both taking3 wickets. ElliotMason also kept particularlywell taking3 catchesand a stumping.unfortunately we forgotthat we also had to bat and wereall out in the40'n over for 107.

The fifth matchwas againstHornsby. We battedfirst and made224 runs on a stow outfield. The main scorerswere John Hair (50),Steven Smith(59), DavidSavic(38) and Aaron Mall(36). We then bowledwell to have Hornsbyall out for 71 in the 35th over.

Generallywe playedwell throughoutthe season. In particularwe bowledwell and generallyfielded well. Unfortunately, our battinglet us down in the game againstSt Georgeand we nowlook towards next year.

Joshua Hudson (3-11) being the pickof the earlybowling teaming up 47 with rim smith from the oppositeend. MichaelKelly (5 o 4m 0/1) as first changewas 48 unluckynot to takea wicketbut bowleda verytight spell. Backedby fantasticfielding including 1 run out eachby Joshand MichaelKelly, we wereable to dismisslllawarra for 83.

We neededto win againstHornsby, our arch rivals. We battedfirst and were 1i81 but due to undisciplinedbatting only reached121. HaydenCalvey (16), LukeArmstrong (36)and Sean Mclnnes(19) were the stars.Tim Smithand JoshuaHudson took early wicketsand Joel Leffler (6 o 0/15)bowled well. In the end we did not get enoughruns to applypressure to theirbatting and they passedus threewickets down.

Round four and we needed a team bondingsession so we organiseda trip to Canberra.Canberra batted first and while wicketswere hard to get our fieldingwas superband we restrictedthem to 5/162.We neededa steadystart and LukeArmstrong (23) and HaydenCalvey (30) put on a fifty run openingpartnership. Sean (56x)and Joshua(19x) saw us throughto victory. Thanks to all the parentsand playersfor a greatweekend.

Roundfive againstFairfield and a solidstart by LukeArmstrong (52) helpedus reach 4/96 but we stalledwith a coupleof quickwickets until JoshuaHudson (31) and MichaelOsmond (30) steadiedthe ship helpedby a smart 16x from Matt Morgan,to finishup with 7/163.Fairfield hit throughthe balland lookedin controlat 1181after 22 overs. Our spinnersMichael (3i13) and Joel Leffler(3/13) took 6123in20 overswith Matt contributingbehind the stumps with a good stumpingand catch. This and wonderfulfielding which included2 greal runoutsby Luke and HaydenWatson saw victorygained.

Unfortunatelyour seasonstarted badly and didn'treally recover. lt seemedour batting Manager had it's confidenceknocked out of it earlyand we just couldmake the totalsrequired whichhad almost been the strengthof thisteam in the pastwere we seemedto be able MATCHRESULTS to chasedown any target.Bowling and fieldingwas of it's usualhigh standardand the additionof Adam Honeas wicket Keeperthis year addedanother dimension in the Round't : Sutherland216 defeatedGeorges River St George160 field.

Round 2: Sutherland8/152 defeated lllawarra 83 This year we also WelcomedLachlan Gill who made some usefulcontributions with bothbat and balland fittedin wellwith the old crowd.Rhys Bobyk also returnedto the Round3: Sutherland121 lost to HornsbyKu RingGai31132 fold and seemedto pick up fromwhere he left off in the victoriousFoster Shield ranks. It is saidthat luck plays a certainamount in all sportand it was as thoughall ourshad Round4: Sutherland/165 defeated Canberra 5/162 desertedus. Round5: Sutherland7/163 defeated Fairfield 144 That aside it was still a very enjoyableand rewardingexperience for the boys with some fine personalperformances. The howlingwind at one game saw Vin change 49 50 to openingquick to push into the windwhich yielded DanielSaunders from a leggy an J. H. CREAKSHIELD him a "3 for" and in doing so remainedas openingbowler for the remainderof the season. His openingpartner Daniel Ward had a greatyear as captainand provedmore thana handfulfor everybatsman who hadto face him. EricSchnyder, Andrew Jones & AlecJudd all had successwith bat & balland featured in the top end of the statisticson bothcounts. lf the team had littleluck then Ben Marciantehad none as he just couldn'tconvert his club form into runs on Sundaybut stillenjoyed some successwith the ball. Rhys showedhis new found form in the field takingsome good catchesand his batting certainlycarried his usualflair, Michael Sharkey improved as the seasonwent on and finishedwith a few good digs includinga memorablematch winninginnings at Blacktown, not forgettingthose pies he kept chucking.Seems batsmen don't like pies thesedays?

Tom Aggettlooked the goodsthis year openingthe battingand hittingthe ball harder than ever beforeand althoughthe big scoresdid not fall his way they are certainlynot far away at this level. The samecan be saidfor BryceDaenell who has alwayshit the ballfirmly and seemed only a matterof timebefore he reallyunleashed a biginnings.

I guesssome consistency and some more positive batting and we willagain be backon top of our game and hopefullyon top of the ladder in next years Rep season. We welcomeda numberof new playersinto the CreakShield side this year, and it is testamentto the boy's efforts, how easilythey fittedin and how quicklythis bunchof blokesbecame a team!

The first competitiongame saw our team playingSouth Easternat Booralee. South Easternwere lastyears runners up, and we knewit was not goingto be easy. We lost the toss and were invitedto field,on a hot, still morning. SouthEastern were 3-89at morningtea, and were lookingstrong. An excellentfightback saw them8-161 after the 50 overs. At 3-5 after5 overswe werein needof someconsolidation. Unfortunatelv it wasn'tto be,and we were rolledfor just 45 runsin 29 overs.

Round2 Vs HornsbyKuringai. After losing the toss,we wereinvited to bat. NiallWoan top scoredwith 41. We battedout the finalovers aggressively to give us a competitive totalof4l130. An outstandingeffort in the field, and some tight bowling saw HornsbyKuringai struggle for runs - 3/49 at afternoontea. Our bowlinocontinued to be miserlvafter the

A,I 52 adjournment, and a well takencatch in the finalover saw HornsbyKuringai bowled out W. G. FOSTERSHIELD for 104.

Round3 was at home, against Camden. A goodwin for the blokesthis week. Firstuse of the ball in wet windyovercast conditions, made it a littledifficult for our bowlers, and the sundrycount was way too high. Whenwe weren'tbowling wides, we keptthe runs down, and our fieldingwas againof a very highstandard. Camden finished their overs at 6-119.The goodguys turn to batand our opening partnership put on 28,with good runningbetween the wickets. Niall Woan went on to top scorewith 37. We passed Camden'sscore in the 38tnover, and neverlooked too troubled. Specialthanks to Matt Burgfor fillingin for our injuredleggie Tom in this match. Matt bowled4 good overs of leg spin to finishwith 0-9, and performedto his usual high standardin the field.

Round4 A hot and smokySmith Parkwas the venuefor our clashwith Bankstown. Havinglost the toss,we were invitedto bat. After losingan earlywicket, we batted consistently, but failedto put awaythe looseballs. Avishwas the startoday scoring an impressive49.. Theteam couldn't have asked for a betterstart, having Bankstown 2-28 after15 overs. We werein with a sniff, but ladyluck deserted us, and a few edges, and a coupleof uppishmishits that landedsafely cost us the game. They passedus 4 downin the 35thover. The blokesgave 11Q% on the day,and luckcertainly didn't go our way, but we wereproud of the way the blokesstuck at it, and wentdown fighting.

Round5 Vs Parramatta- A greatway to finishoff the year. Parrawon the toss and sent us in. A slow start and a steadystream of wicketssaw us 4-52 after25' Matt Beattieentered the fray, and took control. 3 excellentpartnerships with Nick,Mark and Connorsaw us posta respectablescore ot71143 The four openingbowlers bowled superb line and length,to keepthe pressureon. The 'lSth firstwicket fell in the over, and by the tea breakParra were on the backfoot at 1- 4'l. We bowledour oversand restrictedthe Parramattabatsmen to 6-'105. I am positivethat the boysalso learned a lot throughthe disciplineand skillwork, as we saw a greatimprovement in notonly results, like runs and wickets, but in theirapproach KenNewman. and attitudesto the gamein general,as we progressedthrough the season. Manager The boysshowed a tremendouskeenness and willingnessto try and improve, with their MATCHRESULTS effortsat practice, and whatthey lackedin generalskills was compensatedfor by their greatenthusiasm. Round1 : Sutherland(1 0/45) lost to SouthEastern (8 for 161) Round2: Sutherland(4 folt30) defeatedHornsby Kuringai(10 for 104) We triedto work very hardon improvingthese basic skills and thereis stilla longway Round3: Sutherland(4tor 121)defeated Camden(6for 119) to go,but at thisage surelythe main goal is to learnand improve through participation Round4: Sutherland(6 for 125)lost to Bankstown(5 for 126) andenjoyment, and I am surewe achievedthis. Round5: Sutherland(7 for 143)defeated Parramatta (6 for 105)

42 Whilewe had a coupleof boys that stoodout individuallyon the field and they know PRESIDENTSUI6 who they are, it is importantthat we recognisethat we were a teamand thatall 12 had to participatefor us, as a team, or any individualto succeed. This was the message thatwe triedto promotethroughout the season.

This team messagewas carried through extremelywell by the experienceand dedicationof our managerHarry Peters, who had the off field team, the parents(and some grandparents),drilled to a finelytuned unit of great supportto the boys,Schoie and myself.

In thankingall the parentsand particularlyHarry for his supportas Manager,I must also personallythank Peter Schofield, whose vast knowledgeand experience, was greatly appreciatedby the. boys and myself and helped to make our season so enjoyable.

We mustalso thank Mike Mooney for the excellentjob he did with Harryin lookingafter the team in our trialgames that Peterand I wereunable to attend.
