2015-16 CTPL FIRST GRADE SEASON & GRAND FINAL REPORT The 2015-16 Cricket Tasmania Premier League (CTPL) First Grade competition was contested over 17 rounds, which included Seven Two-Day, Five One-Day and Five Twenty20 Rounds. Heading into the final round Kingborough (1st), Clarence (2nd) and SHSB (3rd) had secured their place in the finals but four of the remaining five clubs were still vying for4th place. North Hobart required an outright victory over Clarence but could only manage a first victory to bring an end to their season. University defeated Glenorchy on first innings to end Glenorchy’s season and move into fourth but were in jeopardy of being overtaken by Lindisfarne. Lindisfarne had secured first innings win over Kingborough and required 145 runs off 20 overs in the last session to secure an outright victory and 4th place. Fortunately for University, Lindisfarne crumbled and were bowled out for 99, handing the outright victory to Kingborough. The final round results meant Kingborough (70 points) claimed back-to-back minor premierships after securing eleven wins during the season including three outright victories. After missing finals in 2014/15 Clarence returned in 2nd place (56 points) ahead of SHSB (52 points) & University (46 points). Lindisfarne narrowly missed finals finishing in 5th (44 points) followed by North Hobart (39.80 points), Glenorchy (34 points) & New Town (20 points). In the first semi-final, a brilliant from Brady Jones led Kingborough to a 42- first innings victory against University at Blundstone Arena – Bellerive. Entering the crease at 5/130, Jones (112 off 175 balls) shared a 79-run with (33 off 188 balls) and a pivotal 69-run last partnership with Cameron Wheatley (5no) to help push Kingborough’s total to 290 at the end of the first day’s play. On Day Two, early wickets reduced University to 3/50 before Dom Michael and Tom Triffitt partnered for the fourth wicket. The pair put on 90 runs to steady the innings but were interrupted by the lunch break. Triffitt (42) was the first dismissed shortly after the interval before Michael (80 off 117 deliveries) followed. The significance of Kingborough’s last wicket partnership realised when University were bowled out for 248. Wheatley (4/46 off 13 overs) the pick of the bowlers to help lead the Knights to their second consecutive CTPL Grand Final. In the second semi-final, a superb spell of spin from on day one and a determined unbeaten half-century from Sean Willis helped steer SHSB to a three wicket victory against Clarence at Kangaroo . Clarence had a steady start after being sent in with Daniel Salpietro and Harry Allanby (26) sharing a 69 run partnership at the top of the order before Doherty was introduced into the attack, a decision which paid immediate dividends for SHSB in the form of Allanby’s wicket. Salpietro brought up his 1000th run for the season on his way to 65 (171) but when he and Evan Gulbis (41) were dismissed in quick succession, Clarence collapsed. The Roos lost their last seven wickets for just 43 runs to finish all out for 197. Doherty was instrumental for the Sharks bowling long, economical spells on his way to figures of 6/64 from 32.3 overs. In reply, an excellent half century to Sean Willis (73no off 130 balls) & a fighting innings from Trent Keep (32 off 92 balls) helped guide the Sharks to victory with three wickets in hand.

2015-16 CTPL FIRST GRADE SEASON & GRAND FINAL REPORT

Played at Blundstone Arena – Bellerive, Kingborough were endeavouring to go back-to-back after defeating University in 2014/15 while South Hobart Sandy Bay were looking for their first premiership as a joint venture. In overcast conditions, Kingborough won the toss and elected to send SHSB to bat. SHSB had an explosive start with Matthew Clark hitting a quick fire 32 off 20 deliveries while Stuart Martin was more patient at the other end scoring 29 from 51. When Semi-Final star Sean Willis (15) joined the pair in the change rooms just prior to lunch, the match was evenly poised at score 3/116 it was however, a different game after the lunch break as (126 off 193 balls) and George Bailey (123 from 189 balls) shared a fourth wicket 204 run partnership to help power the Sharks to 9/368 by stumps. The pair carried the score from 116 to 320 – just seventeen runs short of equalling the final’s record partnership for the fourth wicket. Both lost their wicket within three overs but SHSB had taken control of the final. Cameron Wheatley chimed in to take late wickets as the lower order batsmen struggled against the second new ball to lose 4/29. Brad Lovell and skipper Adam Maher toiled manfully throughout the day with limited success. Day Two was a struggle for Kingborough with in particular striking early to have the Knights 3/33 with all wickets falling LBW within the first thirteen overs of the innings. Thereafter, Harry Evans (24) provided support to Clive Rose, the latter enjoying some fortune having been bowled by Hamish Kingston off a no ball and dropped by wicket- keeper Stuart Martin off Xavier Doherty’s bowling. Rose went on to make 89 – the last man out – as Kingborough limped to 9/214 before declaring shortly before stumps. Bell was the key strike bowler finishing with 4/53 while at the other end Doherty’s (3/34) tight off-spin cleaned up the tail. Having declared 159 behind SHSB could have enforced the follow-on but SHSB Jeremy Smith opted to bat a second time – his openers 0/8 off four overs at stumps. For Kingborough to be any chance of claiming victory, early wickets were required and Brad Lovell stepped up for the Knights. An inspired spell of bowling from Lovell returned the wickets of Clark (35), Doolan (18) and Willis (0) after Wheatley had removed Martin (6). At 4/68 there was a chance but Bailey (59) and Trent Keep (44) buckled down and added an even hundred to steady the innings. Lovell returned to remove both but with SHSB 350 ahead, Kingborough had little hope. SHSB was finally dismissed for 216, 375 runs ahead. As the players prepared to resume after the break, with 33 overs left to play Kingborough conceded defeat. SHSB had broken the drought – thirty years after the amalgamation of South Hobart and Sandy Bay and the fifth CTPL Grand Final. George Bailey was named the Roger Woolley Medallist as Player of the Final.

2015-16 CTPL WOMENS GRAND FINAL

North Hobart continued its dominance of the CTPL Women’s competition after it downed New Town by 9 wickets to win their third consecutive premiership. With persistent drizzle forcing the match to be reduced to 18 overs a-side, New Town were sent into bat and got off to a perfect start, with Erin Lawler and Paris Crowe combining for a 55-run opening stand, before Kirsten Allen claimed the breakthrough removing Lawler for 17. In the very next over, Kirstin Palfrey took the important wicket of Meg Phillips to have the Bucks at 2/61 off 10 overs. When Crowe was dismissed for 44 (off 34 deliveries) with the score on 80, Una Raymond-Hoey (25no off 19) and Jo Blacklow (10 off 20) partnered up to score at a run-a-ball to help New Town reach 4/108 off 18 overs. For North Hobart, Palfrey (2/27) and Allen (2/25) were excellent with the ball while Veronica Pyke was at her economical best, allowing only 11 runs from her four overs. Needing early wickets, New Town got off to a perfect start with Phillips removing Angela Green for just three, but Belinda Page (56 off 39) and Pyke (38 off 29) combined for an unbeaten 105-run stand to steer North Hobart over the line with six overs to spare. Page was named Player of the Final for her innings of 56 not out. It was the second time Page has been named Player of the Final, the first being in the 2010-11 CTPL Women’s Grand Final against University.

2015-16 EMERSON RODWELL & KIM FAZACKERLEY MEDAL AWARD WINNERS

In his first CTPL season, Clarence Coach Daniel Salpietro was tasked to return Clarence to the Finals after they missed finals in 2014-15. Salpietro led by example for the Roos, guiding them to second spot on the ladder and in the process claimed the Emerson Rodwell Medal by 7 votes, polling in 9 matches throughout the season. It was a modest start to the season for Salpietro who had greater impact with the ball picking up multiple wickets in four of the first five matches while making several starts with the bat. In round 6 match v South Hobart Sandy Bay Salpietro found his stride scoring 85 runs and claiming 3/68 in Clarence’s narrow defeat before an extraordinary all round display v Kingborough in the next match where he scored an unbeaten 59 and claimed 6/24 from 9 overs

Salpietro’s form continued to improve through the Christmas period and in the space of 5 games scored 4 centuries with best being 144 v New Town. Ultimately Salpietro finished the regular season as the competitions leading run scorer with 949 runs at an average of 55.80. He then became only the 10th player in 150 years of the competition to score 1000 runs in a season after scoring 62 in the Semi Final. Proving himself a genuine all-rounder, Salpietro also claimed 29 wickets at an average of 16.00. Veronica Pyke capped off an exceptional season by taking out the 2015-16 Kim Fazackerley Medal, which was announced at the Rodwell Medal Dinner. Polling in 10 of a possible 11 matches, the North Hobart all- rounder, scored 487 runs at an average of 121.75 as well as claimed 12 wickets at 8.50 with an economy rate of just 2.41 runs an over through the regular season.

CLARENCE CLUB REPORT

This off season has been spent working with key stakeholders as we prepare ourselves for the opening of our new clubrooms. At this point, the clubrooms will be completed and officially opened in the early part of the season, which is an exciting development for all concerned. Our Board remains largely unchanged, with the only addition being Gavin Horne (IT Communications) who has re-joined bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge in this area. We would also like to thank Susie Dart and Linda Boucher for their services last season, with both stepping down from the board this season. At the operational level, roles continue to be filled as we gear up for the new season. We are extremely thankful to those who have volunteered their services for another season and welcome the opportunity to have many more helpers as we transition into our new clubrooms. We have been fortunate to have established a strong working relationship with the Rosny Bowls Club and will continue to utilise this location and facility until our new clubrooms are opened. The club has been fortunate in being able to secure the services of the following coaches, resulting in a stable base from which to launch our season:

Senior Club Coach Daniel Salpietro Youth High Performance Nigel Horsley Senior Mens Ass Coach Wade Irvine U/17 Male Coach Martin Devlin Senior Mens Dev Coach Harry Allanby U/15 Male Coach Matt Tansey Specialist Skills Coach Scott Kremerskothen U/17 Female Coach Darren Burke Senior Womens Coach Leesa Walker Chairman of Selectors Roger Woolley

Daniel Salpietro has recently agreed to a further three (3) year stint as Senior Coach of our club, having also come off an outstanding first season, culminating in his runaway Emerson Rodwell Medal victory. Harry Allanby, who also enjoyed a breakout season in 2015/16 will continue for a third season as our 1st Grade captain, leading a strong group that comprises a balance of experience and talented young players. We welcome the additions of Tasmanian Tigers contracted player , and the talented James Seymour to our club for the 2015/16 season. Both players will add to our squad’s depth, as will having State Under 19 Captain, Fletcher Seymour who will join the squad full time from the Mowbray Cricket Club Experienced performers, including Allanby, Salpietro, Meredith, Gulbis, Wells, Rainbird, Irvine, Jones and Hickey will continue to provide strong leadership to our talented youth, comprising Salter, Devlin, Workman, Absolom and Harris as they look to build long term careers with our club. The club has been fortunate to maintain stability within our Female cricket program, securing the services of Leesa Walker (Senior Womens) and Darren Burke (Under 17 female) for another season. The Womens team having been semi finalists for the past two (2) seasons, whilst our Under 17 team start their campaign as defending premiers. Supporting Leesa and Darren will be ’s recently appointed Captain, Heather Knight who will join the club during the Women’s big Bash period as a player with the Hobart Hurricanes. The continued development of young guns Erin Fazackerley, Olivia McDonald and Maddison Mills combined with experienced campaigners in Emma Thompson and Katie Cole augers well for our Womens program as they enter the new season. Nigel Horsley will again champion our Male Youth program as our High Performance Coach with this program. Nigel will once again be supported by Marty Devlin (Under 17 Coach) and Matt Tansey (Under 15 Coach), with the boys in this program being developed to hopefully be long term First Grade players of the future with our club.

GLENORCHY CLUB REPORT

Glenorchy is excited to have back on board as senior coach. With our senior teams in a development phase we have gone to Brett as the most decorated and best player development coach in the state. Along with our new 2nd grade coach Damien Minehan, Women’s Coach, Southern Stars & Roar representative Julie Hunter, Game Development Manager Andrew Moore and High Performance Manager Michael Knight we have a quality coaching setup for the advancement of our

young list. Along with key junior coaching appointments we have a renewed committee with new members and new role with Marketing Manager Ella Beechey, with these appointments the club is very optimistic about this year on and off the field. We also welcome new major sponsor Kumon Education to KGV along with our other valued sponsors. We say goodbye to Luke Butterworth this season who has moved into a full time coaching position in ACT cricket, we are privileged to have had Luke as a long term player, coach and life member of our club. Last season also marked the passing of club legend Ian “Jesse” James his impact on the club and local cricket is immense and he will be missed by his family and the cricket community. 2016 brings the opening of the new KGV Precinct building providing some great new facilities for us to use and the new Anfield St home change room development will open during the season providing high quality players and umpires spaces. These upgrades also support our goal of servicing the best cricket talent in the region and reaching out to new cricketers through our game development programs. KINGBOROUGH CLUB REPORT

Season 2015/16 was a very busy one for the Kingborough Knights both on and off the field. Winning back to back Club Championship trophies (a first in the Club’s history)was a major achievement) and came on the back of some great results by all teams playing in the Premier League Competitions. Premiership medals were won by our U/17 Boys Team and 3rd Grade after very consistent performances throughout the season. Our 1st Grade team finished runners up in the CTPL Twenty20 Competition, Kookaburra Cup (One-Day Competition) and CTPL First Grade and whilst disappointing not to win one, the fact that the team played in all finals was a great achievement. With 2nd Grade losing their semi-final and both our woman’s teams just missing out on finals berths and the U/15’s boys just missing out on winning three grand finals in row, it was a very successful on field season for the Club. The coaching panel was lead once again by Tim Scott with great support from Jarrod Williams, , Adam Maher, Bryce Turnbull, Nathan Freitag, Mark Owen, Stuart Clark and Adam Smith and all are all to be commended on the results achieved during the season. To all involved in our junior program especially Junior Development Officer Jackie Vincent who coordinated all our junior teams and received great assistance from team coaches and managers. The club is grateful for their time and effort provided to all our junior players. Tom Martyn and his team at HPCT are also commended for managing our T20 and Milo Programs. The ADAPT Junior Academy now 4 years old, again provided an opportunity for 16 junior players’ both boys and girls to receive 10 weeks of coaching from HPCT Staff Mark Divin, Nathan Freitag, Kyle Wisniewski and in the final weeks Clive Rose. The Club is indebted to ADAPT for the sponsorship which enabled the Club to provide its up and coming players with the opportunity to advance their cricket skills. To all our volunteers who give so much time to the running of the Club throughout the season, the Board expresses its thanks for your much appreciated contribution. Without the time given by so many people the Club would not survive and to each of you a big Thank You. Anyone willing to give sometime to assisting in Club operations should drop into the Clubrooms any weekend during the season and have a chat about the options available for volunteers. It would be remiss if the Club did not mention the enormous support that it receives from the Kingborough Council and its staff who provide us with the best facilities available in the State for Premier Cricket. The work of the Turf Crew in producing such outstanding match and practice facilities for us to use is exceptional. To Cricket Tasmania and its hard working staff we also express our thanks for the sometimes thankless task of dealing with Clubs –your efforts are appreciated. The Club looks forward to another great season on and off the field in season 2016/17.

The significance of the amount of time and energy by volunteers can never be underestimated. The viability of clubs can only continue with dedicated volunteers and by finding resources to keep the clubs operational.

Club coach The Bucks have the great pleasure in having Brad Loveluck continue as coach for 2016/17. Brad has developed a strong coaching staff. Brad brings ongoing improvement to the club having coached the club for a number of years. His enthusiasm has continued to strengthen the positive attitude around the club and strong player numbers.

NORTH HOBART CLUB REPORT

With improved performances across all grades over the past few seasons, 2016/17 promises to be a big season for the North Hobart Cricket Club. In the lead up to the season, the club made several off-field changes which we believe will put the club in good stead for not only this season, but for seasons to come. Paul ‘Whimmo’ Collins has been appointed as our new Director of Cricket while John Dakin has been appointed as our bowling coach joining club coach Wade Townsend and Robb McMillan as the coaches of the senior men’s group. North Hobart has made a conscious decision this preseason to not make the recruiting of players in order to achieve success a focus, but instead invest in the talent we already have. We are a young club, however as our players mature and develop together, we believe we will become one of the most competitive clubs in the CTPL. We have welcomed two new faces to the club in Cameron Boyce (Queensland Bulls) and Chris Hobson (Wellington Warriors), both of who will bring an enormous amount of experience, talent and knowledge to North Hobart. With the addition of Boyce, the North Hobart men’s team now has five players on Cricket Tasmania contacts including Jordan Silk, Caleb Jewell, Corey Murfet and Jake Doran. This give our young players a great opportunity learn from those players who have taken their cricket to the next level. Our all-concurring women’s side looks set to again be a force to be reckoned with under the leadership of Belinda Page. For a team to win the CTPL title and state title three seasons in a row is a truly amazing feet and something all members of those teams should be very proud of, as everyone is at North Hobart. The women side has secured a fantastic recruit in Wynyard batsman Taylah Purton. Purton will add to the Demons’ fire power on the field while also nurturing the next crop of female cricket stars as coach of our U17 side. Behind the scenes our board have been working hard to in the lead up to the 2016/17 season to ensure North Hobart is the best performing club off the field. The board has secured a raft of new sponsors for the club, negotiated a new clothing deal and put measures in place to increase the numbers of junior and women’s player at the club, just to name a few initiatives. All in all, it is a very exciting time to be at the North Hobart Cricket Club and we look forward to seeing what the 2016/17 season brings.

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA CLUB REPORT

The senior men’s squad commenced pre-season training in mid-July and have worked hard to be prepared for what will be another big season of Premier League cricket. Our junior winter academy has continued again this year with great success. The extra sessions have enabled our junior players more time to iron out any technical issues well before the season starts, where more game-sense orientated skills will be incorporated. We hope they will be raring to go for the upcoming season, and look forward to seeing some positive results in our junior teams. University continue to be well represented in state and national colours with James Faulkner making an impact in the recent tour of , starring with the ball and adapting well to the conditions over there. Andrew Perrin is a new face to the club, moving over from Victoria when offered a contract with the Tigers. Tim Paine and Dom Michael are training hard and we hope they make a big impact on the domestic scene and make their way into the “Green and Gold”. We will welcome back with open arms Kumar Sangakarra throughout the Big Bash and look forward to seeing him in University colours again this year. Tom Triffitt and Ben Hilfenhaus will again turn out for the Melbourne Stars in BBL06. Katelyn Fryett and Sasha Moloney continue to represent the club at state level, in the Roar and Hurricanes squads, and will be hoping for another successful season. The Lions’ Committee has been actively promoting our ‘partner’ programs and developing additional club sponsorship. We appreciated the continued support of Davey Street Discount Pharmacy, Centrepoint Pharmacy Hobart, University of Tasmania, Sports Council & TUU, Subway and Vermey's Quality Meats. University has some amazing volunteers who help out each week but most of the heavy lifting comes from our junior coaches who work tirelessly with the next generation up to four nights a week and then supporting the teams on the weekend. University of Tasmania Cricket's team of coaching staff are led by Tim Paine, who is well supported by Jayde Herrick who continues in his role as General Manager of Coaching and Development. Significant work has gone into establishing a whole club program to ensure a consistent message is being delivered across all grades. We have been thrilled to have input from Ben Hilfenhaus and Dom Michael into our program this year as bowling and batting specialist coaches respectively. Their experience and knowledge of the game is world class and we look forward to them developing their coaching skills over the coming season. This year we welcome Andrew Kealy to our coaching panel as an assistant coach, and club favourite Enrico Di Venuto will again continue as an assistant coach. Sasha Moloney will take on the role of Under 17 Boys coach this season. Sasha has shown over the past two years her competitiveness and knowledge of the game both as a player and coach, playing and captaining in senior men’s 2nd and 3rd grade. Sasha will also share the role of Women’s coach again this year with Maddie Blazely who have both done a wonderful job in reinvigorating our women’s program. In addition to our Senior and Under 17 teams, there will be an Under 15 girls team as well this year. Season 2016/17 will see University of Tasmania Cricket ‘up skilling’ many more parents and team managers to ensure that all juniors get a great cricket experience. Get your costumes ready as there are also many events on the agenda for our social calendar this year, so be sure to keep an eye out on our Facebook page for further updates. 45
