Belinda Jefferies - Premier League Chair Tom Barwick - Premier League Manager 3 2015-16 CTPL FIRST GRADE SEASON & GRAND FINAL REPORT The 2015-16 Cricket Tasmania Premier League (CTPL) First Grade competition was contested over 17 rounds, which included Seven Two-Day, Five One-Day and Five Twenty20 Rounds. Heading into the final round Kingborough (1st), Clarence (2nd) and SHSB (3rd) had secured their place in the finals but four of the remaining five clubs were still vying for 4th place. North Hobart required an outright victory over Clarence but could only manage a first innings victory to bring an end to their season. University defeated Glenorchy on first innings to end Glenorchy’s season and move into fourth but were in jeopardy of being overtaken by Lindisfarne. Lindisfarne had secured first innings win over Kingborough and required 145 runs off 20 overs in the last session to secure an outright victory and 4th place. Fortunately for University, Lindisfarne crumbled and were bowled out for 99, handing the outright victory to Kingborough. The final round results meant Kingborough (70 points) claimed back-to-back minor premierships after securing eleven wins during the season including three outright victories. After missing finals in 2014/15 Clarence returned in 2nd place (56 points) ahead of SHSB (52 points) & University (46 points). Lindisfarne narrowly missed finals finishing in 5th (44 points) followed by North Hobart (39.80 points), Glenorchy (34 points) & New Town (20 points). In the first semi-final, a brilliant century from Brady Jones led Kingborough to a 42-run first innings victory against University at Blundstone Arena – Bellerive. Entering the crease at 5/130, Jones (112 off 175 balls) shared a 79-run partnership with Clive Rose (33 off 188 balls) and a pivotal 69-run last wicket partnership with Cameron Wheatley (5no) to help push Kingborough’s total to 290 at the end of the first day’s play. On Day Two, early wickets reduced University to 3/50 before Dom Michael and Tom Triffitt partnered for the fourth wicket. The pair put on 90 runs to steady the innings but were interrupted by the lunch break. Triffitt (42) was the first dismissed shortly after the interval before Michael (80 off 117 deliveries) followed. The significance of Kingborough’s last wicket partnership realised when University were bowled out for 248. Wheatley (4/46 off 13 overs) the pick of the bowlers to help lead the Knights to their second consecutive CTPL Grand Final. In the second semi-final, a superb spell of spin bowling from Xavier Doherty on day one and a determined unbeaten half-century from Sean Willis helped steer SHSB to a three wicket victory against Clarence at Kangaroo Bay Oval. Clarence had a steady start after being sent in with Daniel Salpietro and Harry Allanby (26) sharing a 69 run partnership at the top of the order before Doherty was introduced into the attack, a decision which paid immediate dividends for SHSB in the form of Allanby’s wicket. Salpietro brought up his 1000th run for the season on his way to 65 (171) but when he and Evan Gulbis (41) were dismissed in quick succession, Clarence collapsed. The Roos lost their last seven wickets for just 43 runs to finish all out for 197. Doherty was instrumental for the Sharks bowling long, economical spells on his way to figures of 6/64 from 32.3 overs. In reply, an excellent half century to Sean Willis (73no off 130 balls) & a fighting innings from Trent Keep (32 off 92 balls) helped guide the Sharks to victory with three wickets in hand. 4 2015-16 CTPL FIRST GRADE SEASON & GRAND FINAL REPORT Played at Blundstone Arena – Bellerive, Kingborough were endeavouring to go back-to-back after defeating University in 2014/15 while South Hobart Sandy Bay were looking for their first premiership as a joint venture. In overcast conditions, Kingborough won the toss and elected to send SHSB to bat. SHSB had an explosive start with Matthew Clark hitting a quick fire 32 off 20 deliveries while Stuart Martin was more patient at the other end scoring 29 from 51. When Semi-Final star Sean Willis (15) joined the pair in the change rooms just prior to lunch, the match was evenly poised at score 3/116 it was however, a different game after the lunch break as Alex Doolan (126 off 193 balls) and George Bailey (123 from 189 balls) shared a fourth wicket 204 run partnership to help power the Sharks to 9/368 by stumps. The pair carried the score from 116 to 320 – just seventeen runs short of equalling the final’s record partnership for the fourth wicket. Both lost their wicket within three overs but SHSB had taken control of the final. Cameron Wheatley chimed in to take late wickets as the lower order batsmen struggled against the second new ball to lose 4/29. Brad Lovell and skipper Adam Maher toiled manfully throughout the day with limited success. Day Two was a struggle for Kingborough with Gabe Bell in particular striking early to have the Knights 3/33 with all wickets falling LBW within the first thirteen overs of the innings. Thereafter, Harry Evans (24) provided support to Clive Rose, the latter enjoying some fortune having been bowled by Hamish Kingston off a no ball and dropped by wicket- keeper Stuart Martin off Xavier Doherty’s bowling. Rose went on to make 89 – the last man out – as Kingborough limped to 9/214 before declaring shortly before stumps. Bell was the key strike bowler finishing with 4/53 while at the other end Doherty’s (3/34) tight off-spin cleaned up the tail. Having declared 159 behind SHSB could have enforced the follow-on but SHSB Captain Jeremy Smith opted to bat a second time – his openers 0/8 off four overs at stumps.
